1. The Senior-most Infantry Regiment of the Indian Army
It was formed as the 103rd Mahrattas in 1768, making it the most senior light infantry regiment of the Army. It battalion was given the duty of protecting British possessions on the island of “Bombay”. Hence, they were also called “2nd Bombay Sepoys”
2. The 126 Gurathas - Joint Battalion of Marathas and Gurkhas
In 1901, in East Africa, the 4 Battalion of the MLI and a battalion of Gurkha Regiment were joined to make a new battalion. It was called the “126 Gurathas”. Combining two of the most deadliest warrior races on the face of the earth proved to be a nightmare for enemies. The 126 Gurathas logged in quite a few victories over their adversaries.
3. How the Marathas got their War Cry
While fighting Italian forces in World War II in Gallabat, Sudan the Marathas conceived their famous war cry. It was on 11 January 1941 while attacking an Italian fortification, things started to go out of hand and the Marathas were on the verge of losing the battle. It was then that Capt. Boomgart, the officer in charge was advised to inspire the Marathas by reminding them of Chhatrapati Shivaji. Thus, the famous war-cry “Bol Shivaji Maharaj ki Jay! Har Har Mahadev!!” came to be associated with the regiment. On hearing this war cry, the Marathas leaped forward with great aggression and defeated the Italian garrison!
4. One of the most decorated Regiments
The regiment received 2 Victoria Crosses for their bravery in World War II. During the war, Naik Yeshwant Ghadge and Sepoy Namdeo Jadhav were decorated with the Victoria Cross in the Italian campaign, while 130 other decorations were awarded to the MLI.
5. Goa Liberation
The Maratha Light Infantry played a pivotal role in execution of operations to liberate the territories of Daman, Diu and Goa from the clutches of the Portuguese. Next time when you visit Goa for a vacation, for a moment remember the brave soldiers of the MLI who fought so that you enjoy those pristine beaches in Goa!
6. Special Praise in Battle of Keren
In the Italian Campaign in World War II, Marathas received special praise for their bravery. A British Officer wrote, “These soldiers from Deccan province of India are very peaceful and generally do not meddle with other’s business. But if you provoke them and they get angry, then the whole picture changes and they can fight in the coldest cold and the hottest of summers with a courage and ferocity unmatched by any of the other Indian soldiers!”
7 .Honours after Siege of Kahun (Balochistan, Pakistan)
A force of 140 men from the 2nd Battalion (called Kali Panchwins) held off the ferocious Marri tribe troops for 6 months in 1841 in the Fort of Kahun in present day Pakistan. This was done while battling hostile enemy raids coupled with food and water shortage and epidemics of diseases.As a recognition of their bravery, the name “Kahun” is embroidered on the flag of the 2nd Battalion. Moreover, a road in Pune is named as Kahun Road in the memory of the brave defenders.
8. Wide Theater of Operations
The Marathas have fought in both pre-independence and post-independence era in various unforgiving terrains of the world. Their battlefield include Africa, Europe, Northeast Frontiers, Gulf countries, Iraq, Gaza Strip, Burma (Myanmar), Ladakh, Jammu & Kashmir and many other regions.
9. Marathas in Special Forces - The Waghnakhs
The 21 Maratha Light Infantry was converted into a Special Forces unit in 1996 and renamed 21 Para. Nicknamed “The Waghnakhs” (Tiger Claws) after Chattrapati Shivaji’s brave act of killing AfzalKhan by using the Waghnakh, the 21 Para has been a decorated force. Recently, 21 Paras conducted the cross-border raid on terrorist camps in Myanmar and destroyed them as it specializes in such missions.
10. Marathas in Paris - Bastille Day Celebrations
On July 14, 2009, the Indian Army Contingent was invited for Bastille Day Celebrations in France. The country’s best marching regiment, the Maratha Light Infantry led the parade to the tune of “Kadam Kadam Badhaye Ja”. The then PM Dr. Manmohan Singh was also present at the occasion.
11. Affiliations of the Regiment
The Indian Navy’s Missile Destroyer INS Mumbai and the 20th Squadron of the Indian Air Force are affiliated to the Maratha Light Infantry Regiment.
Maratha Light Infantry is the oldest & most experienced Regiment. It is these battle-hardened soldiers who keep a watch so that we can sleep peacefully at night.
