    I am from Poland and this is amazing. I am a long-life fan - I was born 1991 but RUSH is my favorite band - and it will always be - it shaped me as a human being... My alcoholic father introduced me to them. It is amazing that Geddy talk about Poland. I am a nurse and is living some shitty life out of my low salary, but whatever - when I drive my 1997 Citroen Saxo and listening to Red Barchetta I feel like a king :3 Greeting from Poland to all the listeners! All the health for you !

    My parents were from Lodz and Lublin but studied in Warszawa, and eventually came to Australia where i was born.....Such a sorry life story from Poland. Im so glad Geddys parents survived and we were blessed to have Rush...... The band of my life. My parents were lucky to survive, although not Jewish as far as i know, they fled ahead of the nazzi lines and evaded being captured. Many stories of death and struggles. My memories still abound with their miraculous escapes.

    My Grandfather was part of the British 11th Armoured Brigade that helped liberate Bergen-Belsen. What he experienced haunted him and he rarely spoke about the war, certainly not about the camps. I didn’t find out that he was there until after he passed away so I find it amazing that Geddy Lee’s mother had the strength of character to tell her children her story. We must never forget.

      My Friend Ed was a shot down RCAF gunner. He was arrested called a spy. They were sent to Bergin Belson to be executed. Goering saved them from being executed. Bergin Belson was not classified as a death camp even though people were executed or starved to death. The Canadian Gov did not recognise that he was a survivor of the holocaust but France gave him the legion of honour havi g helped with the resistance when the were shot down. Ed passed last year but when he described the camp and what he saw he said that the people were like walking dead he said they were so thin all you could see was skin and bones.

    Another little aspect of his story with his Mom. His given first name was Gary, but she couldn't pronounce it correctly, coming out with "Geddy", instead. Then somewhere along the line he decided to join her in it and went to court and had his first name officially and legally changed from Gary to Geddy. Cool thing to do for his Mom.......... ;-)

    • @sarahwentforalemonwedgeand8991
      @sarahwentforalemonwedgeand8991 4 ปีที่แล้ว +40

      Not exactly. It wasn't a MiSPRONOUNCEMENT per se, she was saying GARY but her thick accent made it SOUND like Geddy - and for the record, it was a friend of Geddy's who was the first one who started calling Gary "Geddy" - because the FRIEND mishead Geddy's Mom and THOUGHT she was saying "Geddy".

    My grandfather was a WWII disabled veteran. He saw a lot, North Africa, Sicily, Italy and after he was wounded returned to be a witness at a death camp. He never spoke about it until near his death. He said you could smell death from miles away and that once they arrived he said it was the most horrible thing he ever saw. After his passing I received a copy of his Army records and it is documented that he went there and I can't help but feel so angry when I hear people deny the Holocaust or see Nazis marching south of the border. Keep Rocking Geddy!

    When I was a kid back in the mid 80's I discovered Rush. The song Freewill is what got me hooked. In fact, Permanent Waves, Moving Pictures and Signals were my first Rush albums. My parents, however, started going through my music and reading the lyrics in the album covers. They came across Witch Hunt and decided that Rush was Satanic and destroyed the albums. This was during the Satanic panic in the US. If you grew up in the 80's in an evangelical home you know what I'm talking about. The irony being they were doing what the song Witch Hunt was describing. But, my love for Rush never diminished. I own all of their music, in one form or another. I learned more about humanity, humanism and love through Rush than I ever did in church. Thanks Rush. Thanks Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson and Neil Peart (RIP).

      I fortunately had the opposite experience. Outside the church on the sidewalk I was showing a kid from my church my Rush song book (sheet music and lyrics from their 1st album through to Signals. I'd learn it all on piano). The other kid was showing me his Motley Crue song book. The pastor walked up to us, "What ya got there?" The pastor skimmed through some Rush lyrics and said, "I see nothing wrong with that." He handed it back to me and then looked through the Motley Crue book. He was appalled and called the kid's parents. Lol That experience made realize Rush is one the few bands you can introduce to your kids (not that I have kids) without worry. I've been to 5 Rush concerts, the last being R40. It was beautiful to see grandpas, fathers, and sons all at the same concert.

      Thanks for sharing, Laura. Most people know about the Jewish victims in the concentration camps, but the Nazis killed many others as well. I think the sad reason most people don't know about the Romani victims from the former Czechoslovakia (around 800,000) is because the Nazis pretty much finished the job in that country. There were simply no survivors left in their particular case (or certainly no where near as many). The Nazis also killed about 1.5 million Polish Catholics.

      As both a Christian and a Rush fan (they are actually my favorite band), his words toward the end were heart-breaking to me as well although, not surprising. How else could he sing Neil's lyrics with such conviction. Unfortunately, Geddy takes the evil that men do in a fallen world as proof there is no God, yet doesn't see his very existence as the child of not just one, but two holocaust survivors as a miracle of God. He has sang of "Freewill", perhaps without completely connecting the dots to the consequences of people having a free will. It's not always lollipops and rainbows. Free will allows some people to make bad choices that hurt other people. But, it also allows people to sincerely show love to God as well as other people. God didn't intend to create a bunch of robots. And with all due respect to Neil Peart as a musician, his lyrics to "Freewill" get it wrong in this respect: Free will gives us the ability to make a choice, it is not the choice itself. That said, he did get this part right: "If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice". All of that said, I applaud Geddy for telling his family's story. It is important that it not be forgotten the evil men our capable of and the enabling circumstances that allow it to take place.

    • @Ridgerunner-qi1xz
      @Ridgerunner-qi1xz 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Shallex Sadly for some, the level of "proof" they require will only be met after this life is over and then it will be too late. That is a choice.

    • @Ridgerunner-qi1xz
      @Ridgerunner-qi1xz 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Shallex Really? According to me? That's how you comprehended my last statement? Or are you simply attempting to twist it to suit your argument? Yes I do know what happens when this life is over and it is not according to me, it is according to the Holy Bible that I believe is the inspired word of God. Not simply by blind faith, but by a faith reinforced by fulfilled prophecy and the evidence I have seen around me in my life. By the way, the mere existence of modern day Israel, despite having been surrounded by enemies on all sides, is an absolute miracle of God. You have the free will to either choose to believe or not. And by the way in the end, "If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice".

    Dear Geddy Lee,
    I love Rush and the music you guys have made for Decades. Your story here is very inspirational. However... I must point out one very important thing. The fact that BOTH of your parents and other relatives survived a death camp... found each other afterwards and gave birth to a man that turned out to be as talented and successful as yourself, PROVES there is a God. Beyond any reasonable doubt.
    I hope, you will see that for yourself some day. I am not posting this as hate, but, as a person who not only appreciates what you have done but, what God has done to bring you into the world.

    I actually cried at a couple of places in this interview. I survived a war myself, and I can tell you that it's such a life changing experience, nothing is ever the same, it's like your life is suddenly on a different timeline. It never heals.

    • @susanivy3619
      @susanivy3619 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can't imagine what being in a war would be like, as an innocent civilian or a soldier. I do know trauma and I am so sorry you still suffer from what you've been through. I know it's easier said than done but TRY to see yourself as a survivor, a warrior for making it through alive. I truly hope in time you are stronger from all you suffered through (I hope I worded that correctly..... I should of been asleep a while ago and was about to shut my laptop down but felt compelled to respond to your very moving comment). Do you mind if I ask...did you have to relocate to a unfamiliar place after the war? I would imagine that can make things more difficult, but then again, living in an area that was subjected to war might difficult as well. I know I sound naive and ignorant, but for the life of me, I don't understand how moral and intelligent human beings could resort to war, truly I don't...we should be able to come up with compromises...it's like were no different than tree dwelling primates who resort to fighting as they don't have the cognitive ability to see a different option. If there is a God I pray he heals your suffering and I beg we are saved from ourselves...truly, God help us all.

Lee's parents survived the holocaust and ended up halfway across the world and had later gave birth to one of the most talented influential musicians of our time who played in one of the biggest rock bands in history! That's one single surviving families legacy that ultimately changed the world in their own special way and the contribution geddy lee has made to the history of rock and roll and humanity is epic,timeless and classic! Just think how many people didn't make it and the world was robbed of how they too given a chance would have provided their own special contributions to the world and the impact it could of had on our culture and the history of our lives and times is unimaginable!Thank you for sharing your story and God bless you and your family sir!

She asked great questions at a great pace and got a very good story from Geddy Lee. ....Oh, yeah.. the major media companies no longer seek truth, nor interesting stories unless it fits their narrative. I don't know who this interviewer is, I don't know the format of the station (was this an anomaly?). Geddy is on a book tour and yet the book isn't mentioned.
