[ F R I N G E ] INFINITE POSSIBILITES

  • I was recently commissioned to make a fifty minute, improvised audio/visual piece for Studio Renn's fine jewelry show - [The Fringe] Infinite Possibilities.
    They reached out to me to create an audio/visual installation for their exhibit, where people could walk through the created environment and at the end reveal the process video of my hands physically crafting the musical experience. The physicality of my art and their exhibit was a perfect pairing of wonder, awe, and tangible discovery. With this central theme I decided on an arrangement that would give me the most versatility and range of motion, performance wise.
    I didn't know exactly where I would end up by the end of the live improvised performance, but I knew it was going to be something familiar, strange, and unique - which is was the ultimate goal of our partnership. It was an interesting challenge to create uninterrupted video for that long and I give special thanks to Studio Renn for reaching out and commissioning me to create this piece.

      My guess is the following :
      On one side, you got the little Yam' keyboard, going in the MXR looper than into MS70.
      On the other side, the left K7 player going thru the RP50 sample player, fed by OP-1 too, and going in the other in of MS-70.
      MS-70 is going in the fx return of the 414, which plays 4 tracks per K7, and two outs are fed into delay and reverb (on top).
      There might be something I'm missing, but it looks like a working and useable wiring.

    Makes me feel like I’m experiencing what it’s like for an old house to think back on its memories. There are some many people now who are “experimenting” with tape loops, which is great, but sadly, much of it is dreck or at best subpar. You have definitely honed your craft,however, and this is a fine example of what can be done when an artist understands his tools and demonstrates his mastery. Thanks so much for sharing with us all.

      Actually, have you heard “The Ballad of Bill Hubbard”? One of Roger Waters' ambient tracks from “Amused to Death”. Reminiscent, the general mood.

    Fucking Genius. I have been working with music synthesis since the 1970's and have designed, built, owned, played, and recorded on many different synth's. And this setup takes me back to my first mono tape deck, and old Ampex portable deck, and never dreamed of looping the tape back then. Excellent work and creativity being displayed here. BRAVO!!

      A little mixer (you can get the 4 input w/ echo for about $30 online), delay pedal, looper or tape machine, and a keyboard. The old ones like he is using sound really good for this application... and they tend to have better output options than the toy keyboards of today. If you’re going to incorporate a computer, there is a good chance it will infringe on the aesthetic, but the rules are up to the maker. I know you weren’t asking me, but I put together a similar rig. Oh and those old 4 track tape machines are the shit.

    • @gruforevs
      @gruforevs 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@mendedarrows9394 no need to apologize! thats really helpful advice! I mostly use computer stuff right now but I was thinking of making my own synth, maybe that would mesh well with the aesthetic. thanks again for the help!

    • @natethegreatva
      @natethegreatva 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Or do it all in a DAW, but thats not the point is it? While we speed ever towards an autonomous future, sometimes you gotta look back and remember how to take the wheel

    • @tonybucks5709
      @tonybucks5709 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@natethegreatva that is why i was talking about Sequential Prophet 6, which is a fantastic hardware synth, nothing to do with DAW. This is not about the future, google it.

    • @natethegreatva
      @natethegreatva 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Your right, all im saying is, the creating is far more exciting when you start your sound creation using an avant garde method. Considering that most EDM can be simplified down to a "single button press" if your using the right tech, it can be fun to conplicate it, using the wrong. Wasn't meaning to argue with your statement, nor was i trying to imply that the prophet was the same as running it in a computer.

    • @tonybucks5709
      @tonybucks5709 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@natethegreatva what i mean is that, the Prophet 6 is a legendary machine, not that with 1 button you can do the same thing, but you can do so much more. The prophet 6 alone, costs 10 times the gear used in the video. This is not about EDM (which i personally hate), nor about simplfying, just about a much better quality hardware. No worries, no one is arguing here, just trying to explain myself better.
