THANK YOU so much for posting this video.....I stopped it at 2:29 into it and went to the family search page. Within less that five minutes I discovered two other individuals buried in my local cemetery (this is a population of less than 10,000 for 2024). I didn't have either in my Ancestry tree; however, when I backtracked on the family search tree, I did have several generations back so I've been able to work forward and source this with obituaries, death certificates, census, etc!! WOW--game changer for sure!!!!!!!
Okay, I'm gonna admit that I thought calling a new feature "mind blowing" was just click bait. But I am so glad I clicked! This is legitimately mind blowing. What a cool new feature!!
It's been so fun to connect with you at RootsTech! This is new cemetery feature is one I plan on using as I travel and visit cemeteries. I went to England years ago and wanted so much to find graves of relatives but found it frustrating to wander the whole churchyard aimlessly searching. This is brilliant and I cant wait to use it!
All our cemeteries in the UK will have a plan of where the different burial plots are. The problem is that unless they are the big council run ones it maybe hard to find the plans for the small older sites. From what I can see this is of little use to us in the UK unless a lot of records are digitised .
Aimee my daughter started to laugh when Tim said his grandparents "live" in the cemetery in Idaho. Even that was interesting and fun information. Can't wait to start playing with this new tool in Family Search. Hope it works on my phone app too. Thanks for all you do to keep us all up dated on Genealogy information.
8:58 when editing the location of the grave (dragging the marker), how did that effect what future searchers see? Did it also change the info at the other sites (BG & FG)?
That’s a good question! Dragging the marker will change it on FamilySearch, but it won’t change it on other sides, like Find a Grave. FamilySearch users will then have a better idea of where the gravesite is.
I'm ecstatic about the world wide cemetary map! All four sets of great grandparents came from UK. It has been very frustrating to look for information on them. Thank you for sharing this wonderful update!
At the meeting today, they talked about the fact that outside of the US is not as robust as they would like it to be and that they will be adding more there.
@debbenzenberg3575 - just know that if the burial/cemetery information is not already documented & attached to that family member at FamilySearch, they will not show up in the cemetery search.
How did you get to where you can see your grandmother's relations? (about 12:38min into the video) I've gone back over and over and can't see how you got there. I'm on my computer on another screen, I logged into my FS account and can't figure out how you did that with your grandmother.
Good question! It really depends on whether or not they were included on Find A Grave or BillionGraves. In my experience I have seen them included sometimes.
I'm looking at this now and I know my parents are in a certain cemetery. I have them in my tree on Family Search. It shows they are no matches. My grandparents are in this cemetery as are uncles and aunts. Nothing. Just an FYI for your BIL. Could be something I'm not understanding. BUT, this is super interesting.
I tried to mitigate that as much as a could. You don’t have a choice with a zoom recording. I see what I can do. If you have your computer up and watch it slowly hopefully you can figure it out! Thanks for letting me know!
Just a thought. Don't know if this is appropriate or not for this tool. I went in just as recommended and WOW, I can see relatives and distant relatives in cemeteries near me. So there might be some living distant relatives near me that are interested in family history. It would be fun to connect with them and work on genealogy together. So, using the cemetery to find local living cousins.
This is really great! I seem to be encountering a lot of issues though :/ Maybe it's because I'm in a smaller country (New Zealand) but the tutorial never popped up for me, the largest cemetery in the country shows up with five different entries in list view (one is also has a slightly different name) - in the map view, it flicks between showing a different number of pins for the same cemetery (the one that has seemingly five different entries). I also can't find any of my direct descendants despite some very definitely being on Findagrave (I know because I manage several of them) and Findagrave coming up on the left for some of my other relations that do appear (cousins and the like). I also can't work out what "Add person" does as it doesn't seem to make any difference after I've added someone by ID :/
The Cemetery were my grandmother is does not come up. I am linked to her in my tree and she is in findagrave. I guess they still have some bugs to work out
That’s a great question. You can but because it’s a community effort tree it can cause issues with people already in it. Check out this for more info. www.familysearch.org/en/help/helpcenter/how-do-i-upload-a-gedcom-file-to-familysearch
Great question. If they aren’t in FindAGrave or BillionGraves the information has to be separately obtained. FamilySearch wants to bring together as much information as possible. If you know of locations reach out to FS about it.
That’s a good question! Sometimes that happens the record is in cemetery records but unknown location. You can reach out to the cemetery though and ask them. Sometimes it’s on the death certificate that they are buried in a particular graveyard. Although I would caution you there. Occasionally they didn’t end up getting buried in that cemetery.

Haha! 🤣 Glad these are helping! Thank you!!
This looks very interesting. I look forward to trying it out.
Hope it helps you!
Thanks for sharing!
You bet!
Very cool! Can't wait to play around with this some more and to see how it can help me with my research.❤
Good luck!
Great feature - thanks for the tutorial
You're welcome!

How do you get to it? Is this rolling out? I don't see it on my search menu...
You should see it under search. If you’re not yet… I would send a help to FS

@@AncestryAimee At least it's a start. I will be happy with whatever they provide for now. 😀
@debbenzenberg3575 - just know that if the burial/cemetery information is not already documented & attached to that family member at FamilySearch, they will not show up in the cemetery search.
@bfigueroa419 that’s true. Thanks.
This is so Awesome! thank you for sharing.
You are so welcome!
That is really cool! I tried to do something in Google Earth awhile back and it was too much work. And of course, I didn't know the plot info.
That’s amazing! Glad this will help you!

If you go to the main cemetery site - now under "search" and then "cemeteries" you can search by a person's name. Give that a try!
Damn that's so cool, I wish we had more photographed graves in Germany
Maybe you could encourage more local genealogical and historical societies to do it? I’ve coordinated it for activities before and it’s a lot of fun.
Thats awesome .... sometime iI want to go to Roots tech
It really is amazing! Fun and so informative. So much to learn!
Does this include those of our ancestors in mausoleums?
Good question! It really depends on whether or not they were included on Find A Grave or BillionGraves. In my experience I have seen them included sometimes.
Wow.
😄

Let FamilySearch know so they can look into it. They want feedback.
love this video but could you do more indept on this cause with the pics in corner I could not tell what he was doing

This is really cool however, I have noticed that some churchyards/cemeteries are missing. Is there a way to add them?
Yes. They are trying to work with different databases to incorporate them.
If you have additional cemeteries you would like added, please provide this information via Feedback.
Hi how do I go to maps from family search I am trying to do it. I can't seem to do it like you have it login or logoff the account
I just found it
Not sure why that’s happening. You might want to reach out to help and ask for assistance.

Love that!!! FamilySearch did you hear this one???
Hi, Does it work for church cemetery as well? Thank you.
There a great question! They are taking information from whomever will share it. Not just FindAGrave or BillionGraves.
How to access the cemetery tool, please???
They ended up putting it under “Search” at the top of the screen. 😀
Could you please explain how it identifies relatives. Is it generated by death place?
It uses the information from the family search tree.

Thanks for adding that. Please copy this and send it to FS as feedback. Sometimes with new features and larger use the bugs rear their ugly heads.
@@AncestryAimeeWill do! :)
❤it!
Me too! 😉
The Cemetery were my grandmother is does not come up. I am linked to her in my tree and she is in findagrave. I guess they still have some bugs to work out
Good to know - use their feedback button on the left and tell them. I know they want to hear from people and correct errors.
Can I upload my GEDCOM file to Family Search so that my tree is there?
That’s a great question. You can but because it’s a community effort tree it can cause issues with people already in it. Check out this for more info. www.familysearch.org/en/help/helpcenter/how-do-i-upload-a-gedcom-file-to-familysearch
Does this work world wide
Yes. They said they have some international sites but are working to greatly expand in the next months.
It has very few NYC Jewish Cemeteries. Is there a reason for this?
Great question. If they aren’t in FindAGrave or BillionGraves the information has to be separately obtained. FamilySearch wants to bring together as much information as possible. If you know of locations reach out to FS about it.
My 4 great grandmother died after having her last child in Virginia. Days after she was born
Such a common and sad thing.
My great grandmother and her infant died from TB and were buried in the same casket. My grandma survived, thank goodness.
@ColorJoyLynnH wow.
Does this work for Native Americans and African Americans?
If they were buried in a cemetery with a marker.
Is Aimee LDS?
I am 😀
What if you been told there's. No grave location.
That’s a good question! Sometimes that happens the record is in cemetery records but unknown location. You can reach out to the cemetery though and ask them.
Sometimes it’s on the death certificate that they are buried in a particular graveyard. Although I would caution you there. Occasionally they didn’t end up getting buried in that cemetery.
looks like your NOT at Roots Tech
I filmed this a month ago under a quiet order. I could say anything until FS announced it.
This is really big Aimee! I am really looking forward to using this tool! Thank you Family Search and thank you Aimee for bringing this news to us!!
You're so welcome!
