Criminally underrated film, unfortunately eclipsed by films like Star Wars, Annie Hall, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, etc. in 1977. Ironically in 2023, the only film out of this bunch that I continue to revisit regularly is Altman’s 3 Women. No matter how many times I see it, the film seems to morph its self into some mysteriously surreal banana colored dream world. Magical.

I really enjoy how Pinky views Millie as a perfect person because she seems accomplished. Millie is stylish, neat, clean, orderly and organized. She tries new recipes constantly, attempts to hold well-planned dinner parties, knows what to say, decorates her apartment and makes every stab at socializing and infinitum. To Pinky, she's an It Girl. To the cool people, Millie is a social dud and out of sync. I like Millie and would want her for a friend. Pinky, too.

Caught it late one night on Channel 4 (UK tv) back in the 1990s. Its dreamy weirdness stayed with me a long time. I've just recently rewatched it on Blu-ray for the first time since that late night screening all those years ago, and I found it just as mesmerising, unsettling and compelling as ever.

I think it's because Millie didn't look like the cookie cutter pretty girls of the era. No one paid any attention to her. If she looked like a Breck Girl or model of that era (California Girl), the guys would have been falling all over themselves. The movie is conveying this to us and it makes the audience feel protective of her. I find Shelly Duvall to be beautiful and quirky. I love her uniqueness and mannerisms. Her character seems like perfect wife material, except we're shown that the men she attempts to entice don't go for her... They want long blonde, shapely, small nose and laid back cool girls.

I think this movie is an under minded masterpiece. I think Robert Altman really did some of his best work here. I like movies that take you out of your comfort zone and make you feel uncomfortable, Robert Altman does exactly that but in a good way. You never know witch direction the Director is going to take and it leaves you wondering what will happen next! It's one of those movies i never get tried of watching, much can be the same with the movie Straw Dogs with Dustin Hoffman and Susan George.
