We were so lucky to have him. If ever I put on a black polo neck and white cardigan, I remember Maestro Giulini - it's what he always wore for rehearsals. A wonderful musician and man.

Really? I love Giulini but I think he was too old here and he didn't say anything interesting. I might be wrong

@@andreaguarino8207 people say he became too abstracted wirh age, tempi too slow etc... but those if us fortunate enough to have been in works he conducted never forget such wonderful experiences.

@@andreaguarino8207 It's interesting when he says "it's not Debussy", and funny too.

@@ritawing1064 I read you have sung many times with him. Do you have any special memory, something you particularly remember about this great humble man? He always wore that cardigan, I read somewhere that her beloved mother made it.

@@marcooneto5985 yes he always wore a black polo neck snd white cardigan at rehearsals and recordings. Of course with his height and elegance, he always looked immaculate. It would be hard to pick out moments from what was always a magical experience, singing in his concerts, but I do remember the tenderness with which he treated one young soloist having difficulty with the Verdi Requiem in Orange: seeing videos of other conductors being impatient, sarcastic or downright rude with singers has reminded me of how impeccably Giulini always treated his casts - and those with less clout, too. I was so lucky to have been able to take part in those wonderful concerts. When you read in novels that someone's eyes flashed, you think it's poetic licence - but Giulini's eyes flashed in a Dies Irae, and you realised it was not a figure of speech!

Giulini’s good German - of course his early years were spent in far N.Italy which was then
South Tyrol, where the basic language was ‘Austrian - German’.

29:17 I genuinely thought Julia Fischer was playing the bass! Which wouldn't be surprising anyway 😂😂

Grazie mille. Would you like me to say more? This must be a counterpoint to Walter's Columbia recording. Electricity traded in for pure singing of the heart.
