My mom still has hers. Red, bone stock, garage kept and only 70k miles on it. Sits next to her 2013 Boxster with a manual transmission. She's a cool 70 something lady.
Vtec doesn’t necessarily mean it allows you to rev higher than a “regular” engine. It means you can maintain characteristics of two different types of engines within one motor. You can have lower rpm fuel economy, then when desired you can have high rpm peak power. Think of it like having an old school turbo which kicks in late. This is because the cam profile can change on the fly aka variable.
I absolutely loved this car.. I wish i could buy a new one now.. They were REALLY light weight, got great MPG, and were a lot of fun to drive. This car was so good to drive, you left the phone home..
I'm the proud owner of a 89 Dx CRX with a b16 swap, the 99Si is a gem because of the motor. If only Honda gave us the CRX, or EF and EG's with the b16'a in the states.. I've owned over a dozen Honda's in the last 20 years. I've done lots of swaps and modded many, many old 90's Honda's and Acura's. I won't ever claim my b16 crx to be "fast" But I will scream at the top of a hill to say "its a blast to drive." 1,900lb car, Cable clutch, Manual Steering rack. No ABS, No Traction Control. Just a LSD Diff, short gears and a 8,200rpm red line, 175hp out of a 1.6L NA fwd 4cyl. H.O.N.D.A.= "Hold On, Not Done Accelerating" ... V.T.E.C. = "Virtually Torque less Engine Compartment"
I still own a 2000 EBP Si that I bought new from Honda. While it isn't my daily driver anymore, oh what a ride it was/is. It has tasteful modifications, including red SPARCO Torino seats, 17" Enkei RF-1's, RS*R cat-back exhaust, and Neuspeed lowering springs. Oh yeah, it has a Jackson Racing Supercharger too. Fun fact: the 145mph speedometer (vs. the 120mph found in the lower trims) isn't for gimmick. Near red-line in 5th gear, the speed tops out at 145mph in real life. Unfortunately my Honda doesn't run at the moment, but one day it will cruise again.... or i'll use it as my coffin. Either way, it's unlikely to be sold/traded.
Funny you should mention the difference in the speedos. I noticed that the first time I looked inside one of these and said "Hey! How come this one goes up to 140?? Mine (a '98 EX) only goes to 120!!" Which is to say...I knew absolutely nothing about what I was looking at. What I DID know was......I wanted one and wished I had waited 1 more year to get a Civic
It was amazing at 5300rpm+ and the cam lobe shift of the VTEC was so much fun. I had this car a long time ago. Fantastically fun at the time. Theft magnet though.
@@2hotFL Take care of it man! I know you will but I'm just saying because I have a good feeling that the value might skyrocket on these things one day! Especially for those under 100k miles.
I need to figure out how to get Honda to let me drive this, they've been loaning it out for multiple events over the past few years and it just ain't right
They started appreciating around 10 years ago. I daily drove an electron blue pearl ‘00 model for nearly 10 years starting in 2008 and added 100k problem-free miles onto the 110k it had to begin with, then sold it for a grand more than I paid. People were flocking to the car when I put it up for sale and someone bought it very quickly. Absolutely loved it and wish I still had it. Only reason I sold it was because I got back into motocross and needed something to haul my dirtbike.
@@cbh148 Thanks for the answer. I have a 1998 1.6 105HP A/T Civic Coupe. Bought it for 1000 euros, very cheap to own, fun to drive but pretty noisy and too 'metallic' for my tastes. I think I *might* get 3k for it if I market to the right audience - people who really like hondas from this gen.
I honestly prefer NA cars over forced-induction but as a daily driver it really sucks not having torque and the newer turbo SI Civics really shine in daily driving as well as MPG.
@@bruteboy123 You are probably right but in today's market it is hard to find an NA engine that is reliable with good performance. I prefer older Honda vehicles with b and k series engines and manual transmissions.
THANK YOU for saying that about the hair 😂 I never wear a hat but I have to when driving this car. My hair is rubbing the headliner constantly and I've only just gotten used to it.
7.4 seconds. Integra gsr and gti 1.8t were clearly stronger and faster. Even the prelude had stronger acceleration. Lexus IS was 7.1. I used to smoke other Si's and gsrs. I think I launched around 6.7k rpm.

V-Tech allows you to rev higher is a lot shorter explanation
surely they planned on the vtec being activated lol
I've had this car since 2007, and still driving it every day. Only 127k miles; bought it with 83k. It's showing its age, but I still get compliments.

Mine too! Sadly where I live it is hard to get a well maintained one, the civics that are around are true shitboxes
The Vtec system wasnt new, what was new is that this motor used DOHC WITH Vtec. USDM Civics had vtec systems for years prior
Exactly. Since 1992
Well said Ed !

I remember wanting the civic si blue back in 99
If I go back to North America I would consider getting back this exact same Si
Personal my favorite civic, and in my opinion 2000 were the last civics made.
Even in this day and age this car was ahead of its time.
What i loved most about this car was the sound. Paid 2k in 2009. Great on gas or quick when you want it to be and an almost endless path for mods.
Car came out just before I turned 16 and i still want one bad, over any of the new ones

Must fun car I’ve owned! For prospective the Chevy Silverado v8 had 170hp at the time. The car truly had a split personality
Is that really true? My 97 gmc yukon has the 5.7 v8 (350cui) and it makes a little over 200hp stock.

Saving up for one, or at least a nice and clean EX.
I like how they were named SIR in Canada.
I saw one on the streets of Toronto and my eyes widen. Coincidentally a Type R was also driving next to me and I didnt really care about it

"1.6L thats what Hondas came with"
Yes and no. All non performance Hondas came with the 1.6L SOHC. The performance Hondas went with DOHC.
Yea, 1.6 like he said
The Lxi version is only 1.5.
