A sword that's TOO light? - The North Star Cutlass by Privateer Armoury

  • ** Specifications **
    Overall length: 70.3 cm / 27.7 in
    Blade length: 57.6 cm / 22.7 in
    Blade width: 5 cm / 2 in
    Blade thickness: 1.6 mm / 1/16 in
    Weight: 454 g / 1 lb
    Blade material: 15N20 steel (similar to 1075)
    This review is long overdue, I bought the cutlass back in 2011 or 2012. It has held up quite well to my tests, the guard is fitted remarkably well and the construction overall is very solid. The only issue is the steel that used for the guard, which is too soft in my opinion.
    The extremely thin blade makes it very nimble in the hand and performs like a machete, good for cutting branches. It's fun to use for cutting water bottles and such but does not cut tatami mats properly, mainly due to the flexibility and light weight.
    Great weapon for skinny pirates, I suppose. :)

      +Lazhward Kirmist That sounded more like his wrist. Everyone gets that at some point, well, everyone who is able bodied anyways. His shoulder was most likely fused back together originally, and then left to do the rest of the healing on its own, so I doubt it would "pop". The socket might, but that would just be air being forced out of the socket, kind of like popping your knuckles.

    Honestly, I was quite disappointed when I heard that the sword comes with a normal D guard instead of the shape in the video. I think the dented one looks a lot nicer, aesthetically.
    Also, at 7:30 I think I can just about see the outline of where the peen goes through, but it's just really well polished so it's completely flush with the rest of the guard.

    • @jimvader2197

    • @biohazard724
      @biohazard724 8 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      I think people are losing sight of what click bait really is. It's not as though the title was along the lines of A SWORD SO INSANELY LIGHT IT MIGHT JUST FLOAT AWAY OMG WTF!? As Skall says, his title points out the most notable aspect of the review. An aspect that is worth questioning. I feel like click bait should be reserved for titles that aren't forthcoming with the content produced, any Cracked.com article for example. This title is pretty literal to what's discussed in the video.

    • @ShinoSarna

  • @chrisv4496

    From the description you give of the blade, it sounds like it would work especially well for pirates. The extra heft you desire could be problematic if one were fighting on the deck of a ship at sea, whereas having such a light blade wouldn't affect your balance as much. Couple that with the fact that wearing heavier clothing/armor on a ship is suicide if the ship goes down and so most seafarers wore very little, and you've got yourself one hell of a pirate sword.

    15n20 is a bandsaw steel commonly used in Europe. Among knifemakers it's usually used as the nickel bearing component of a composite Damascus blade (the other alloy being something like 1080). I made a small (4 inch) fixed blade out of it. It isn't bad for a small blade but it's probably better suited for something bigger. The thing holding the steel back for mono steel blades is that it's mostly available in thinner stock. The blade you're handling there is flexing way too much. Something's off with the heat treatment they probably ran the thing too soft for the thickness.

    Pirates actually favoured cutlasses because of the ability to cut and shave trees/flora in the Caribbean and African regions. As well, Pirates and their adversaries didn't really wear armour so using a light blade wasn't a problem for cutting performance in combat.

    Hey, Skallagrim, theres a particular sword from a film that really interests me. The Green Destiny from Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. The way it's depicted is a supremely strong sword and it can't be broken. The blade flops around a lot yet it's durability is unmatched. It also has little problem with slicing other swords. I know that theres a large degree of non-realism in the film but I think I've seen floppy swords like that before somewhere in Chinese culture and it just interests me in how a floppy sword could work or be so effective. Is that even possible?

    The lightness of the sword allows the user to swim with the sword underwater to take another ship by surprise, unlike taking a claymore, shortsword, etc. Also it is a multifunctional tool like if you needed a beard trim. In a bind, it is not likely to bind with the techniques used as it would be quicker to parry and not hard block. If it did bind, the the good technique would be to let the guy with the heavier sword take the sword, as most privateers would have a dagger. The weight is good for its context, since you will need all the weight allowance on an old ship for goods and if you need to bail water.

    • @ender_scythe2879
      @ender_scythe2879 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yes, because pirates would jump ship to swim to another ship, and somehow hack their way through the bottom of the ship, so that they could be killed upon entering the ship.

  • @kenibnanak5554

    Interesting. Yes, 1/16" is waaay too thin for a cutlass. It should be about 0.22" at the ricasso with a distal thinning towards the tip, until about 0.11" at the tip. Also, IMO 1075 is too much carbon content. 1050 - 1060 is more practical. Regarding the handguard, that is correct for a true pirate sword as the basket to protect the hand didn't appear on Naval cutlasses until 1805. By then the era of the pirate was long over. Actually real world 17th and 18th century pirates used an evolutionary product called a hanger, a cutlass blade with the handle of the one you have. Clearly this one needs a stronger handguard as the purpose was too keep the other guys sword from cutting your fingers off. A handguard collapsing at a blow is not good. Nonetheless, this was apparently a common problem as some surviving original hanger swords possess the exact same dent in the bow of the hand guard, although I doubt it happened while fooling around. :)

    At least in the movies Prince Valiant's "Singing Sword" is not thin at all. It's hugely thick.
    You might want to take this opportunity to become left handed. I used to be left handed until Sister Fidelis in the fourth grade. Lots of people lose the use of one hand and then develop the other. I don't know how long it takes to cross over with training. But if you got good at it you could always pull a Princess Bride ploy and switch hands halfway through a match.

  • @pauljs75
    @pauljs75 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Probably intended for showmanship. Solid enough to be used and smacked around, but not really intended to be historically accurate. Leave it blunted, and since it's lighter and less likely to cause harm would be better for entertainers that engage in swordplay. The fact that it rings easily and isn't unwieldy while very easily drawn from the scabbard probably reinforces that idea. An actor can look good with fancy quick swashbuckling moves without having to be all that good.

    You talk about ideal weight being when you can move the sword approximately as fast as you can move just your arm. I remember that you criticized super heavy fantasy swords and said that even if the character has super strength it's still stupid to make swords so heavy. Well, but if a person is so strong that he/she can wield it as fast as without a sword then surely a heavy sword is better. Hence, one can argue that super massive swords are ideal for super strong characters.

    • @thefracturedbutwhole5475
      @thefracturedbutwhole5475 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Probus Excogitatoris but making the sword lighter would let them move the sword even faster you don't need to apply massive amounts of force with a sword for it to cut or pierce (in fact you need very little) having an extremely strong character with a weapon so heavy it is tiring for even them to use is not as good as having the same character have a lighter more nimbler sword and be able to apply his strength to other aspects of combat besides just using their strength to hold the sword
      when it comes to swords speed is better than strength (not weight but speed)
