I'm old enough to have watched all the Colombo episodes on TV when they were first aired. Many years ago , I purchased the entire series on DVD. I have watched them countless times. I just recently discovered your channel and absolutely love it! You bring fresh insight to a series that I know and love so well. Thank you for your hard work and research and for bringing a fresh perspective to this series.
The scene also works because the Nimoy character got rattled only for us to realize it was intentional. Him & Columbo purposely acted Rattled for a purpose. Columbo did it better though.
"... And Columbo makes her walk into the tree branches, but she acts like she _always_ does that when going home." -- It's priceless observations like that one that make me drop everything to watch your videos. 😂
In the 60’s and 70’s, for some bizarre reason, brown, green and orange were THE most popular colors in home decor. BTW, you would make a spectacular detective. You forensically dissect these episodes like a surgeon to find the most obscure minutiae. Excellent!
Yes those colos were king in the polyester world of upolstery . The green was called avicado and the orang rust. In those days Dupont owned those color. If you wanted somthing in those colors they made the polyester fabrics and the paint color that is why . When some one say's those colors you know exactly what those look like. Unlike today you can say taupe. or tara- cotta. You will get several different shades.
Actually the reason why Spock died in star trek 2 was because Nimoy got tired of playing the character and said he would only play him if he died. During filming he was surprised how sad he felt about never playing Spock again. Because the producers never really wanted Spock to die they created a scene in which he could possibly come back hoping he would change his mind. Nimoy said the smartest thing he ever did was not tell the producers he was having second thoughts about Spock dying because when they asked him to come back for part 3. He had already decided & knew he wanted to come back but never told them this. So he used the leverage by saying he would only come back if he could direct part 3 which they let him do. From then on he relish playing the Spock character the rest of his life.
Spock dying in Wrath of Khan was so moving I felt cheated by bringing him back (Don't get me wrong; I didn't want Spock to die in the firs place). But maybe it's just classic Trek; how many episodes of TOS had one of the main pantheon 'die' only to be miraculously back, sometimes with thin explanation (Checkov in 'Spectre of the Gun' for instance)?
@@BernardBetelgeuse Honestly, I agree. “Wrath of Khan” would’ve been a great ending for Spock, and just never bring him back. “I have been... and always shall be... your friend… Live long... and prosper.”
Nimoy was all over the place concerning Spock. First, he writes the book “I am not Spock” When casting directors didn’t get the message, he then wrote, “I am Spock” embracing the character, well, he embraced the $$$$ he received from ST Conventions. It was always about the money. Being stereotyped from playing such an iconic character known worldwide isn’t exactly a terrible thing. Look at Takei, he’s been throwing around the Vulcan hand salute for over 50 years and he wasn’t a Vulcan.
I seriously can't think of how much research and time it takes to produce these episodes. I've seen these episodes close to 100 times and the amount that I just overlooked is wild. At this point I would pay for a Columbo LA tour haha.
I think the blowup was entirely warranted. The suture was dissolving as they spoke. This was his rare chance to save a victim’s life, and the clock was ticking.
Columbo slamming of the carafe may be my favorite scene in the entire series; it's certainly one of them. Peter Falk improvising it was a stroke of genius, because it was so unexpected. This added to the surprised reaction Dr. Mayfield (Leonard Nimoy), and his character having the smirk wiped off of his face seeming so real, as though Nimoy didn't see the outburst coming. While Richard Levinson, along with William Link, may have created Columbo, it was Peter Falk who brought him to life, which is why, as shocking as the scene plays out, it still feels 100% believable. Who among us, after all, hasn't known someone with a normally calm demeanor find some situation that sets her or him off? Besides taking serious offense at being laughed to scorn by another murderer who thinks he's cleverer than Columbo, I believe our detective's taken a liking to Dr. Heideman (Will Geer'), as the two bond over little things like the doctor telling the nurse it was okay for Columbo to smoke a cigar in his sickroom, since it was the "first human thing I've smelled in two days".

Aside from the more technical (boring) aspects of production (cinematography/shot composition/editing/method etc) which you don't delve into quite so heavily; your attention to detail is amazing. Regarding Colombo putting aside his discomfort at seeing surgery: This is a recurring theme in the show, since he also forgets his fear of heights at the end of Short Fuse, season 1. It appears that he becomes focused on his imminent victory at the exclusion of everything else.
@@WatchitforDays Maybe this is reading too much into it, but it's possible some of his phobias might just be more of his disarming act, pretending he can't deal with it while actually having no issue and being able to observe every detail, so people underestimate him.
Getting seasick is another of his disarming weaknesses. Agree we have to wonder if these are feigned or not, since he's so got so many dissembling tricks.
Its really great the recognition you give to everyone involved in the making of these Columbo episodes. Between Stitch in Crime and Suitable for Framing, Mr. Averback directed arguably the best episode of each of the first 2 seasons and deserves recognition for that. edit: I cant believe you forgot Mr. Nimoy’s most important credit, the Bilbo Baggins song

One of my top five Columbos. The whole episode is good (and tragic). Like most, one of my favorite Columbo scenes of all time is when he gets mad at Dr. Mayfield. Just so good! Your deep dives are the greatest. Always a good day when I get the notification. Thanks again for all of your hard work!

Another excellent review! I agree that Columbo showing a rare display of anger wasn't a bad thing. He didn't always have to be portrayed as a bumbling cop but showing a full range of emotions did make him even more interesting 👏
A Stitch in Crime is a standout episode. Like many of the best episodes, this one shines due to Peter Falk having an exceptional actor to play off of, as the murderer. Leonard Nimoy is perfect casting. Its also a well written, interesting case. The kind of situation you would only see on Columbo....and only works because we know the "murderer" & their motive. Speaking of standout episode -- You're work on these Columbo reviews is top tier. As a Columbo fan, it lets me enjoy every episode like its brand new again, and learn about them in ways i never even imagined. I love when you go to locations and show how they look today. I couldn't figure out how old the lady who makes these excellent videos, but now I know she is not a gen-x or baby boomer, since anyone who lived in the seventies remembers more "in Search of..." than anything else Nimoy did in the 70's. This show was constantly on in syndication. ... Apart from this She does an amazing job. There are certain things you can't know just from research.
Great Columbo episode and a great Watch It For Days episode. Terrific job, your energy and enthusiasm are contagious. We bought some tacos and made this a date night. It's become a tradition for me and the wife. Leonard Nimoy is a top 5 all time Columbo murderer, and I agree with you, the Columbo anger outburst was well timed and highly effective. Nimoys character is just that unlikable. Thank you again for doing this. Hopefully you have as much fun making these as we do watching.

I feel like the rage from Columbo comes because he thinks someone is gonna be murdered once its done he knows there's nothing he can do but get justice but he probably feels more when he thinks he can stop one before it happens.

Another great video! Thanks for all the hard work you put in for our entertainment. I don't know if anyone has mentioned this yet, but I think the thing on the counter in the bathroom scene was a make-up mirror. The mirror would rotate between normal and magnification sides. The rectangles on the left and right of the mirror are lights. They had different colors you could cycle through. Night, daylight, etc. That was so that you could apply your make-up for the correct lighting that you would be heading out into.
That moment of Columbo’s rage is easily one of the best moments for Columbo imo and while he doesnt mention Harry Alexander, that combined with this moment is what shows how human Columbo is. In his mind Columbo failed, Harry Alexander died because he couldnt catch Dr. Mayfield in time or anticipate Mayfield’s next move. Now this cold blooded monster is laughing at him and Columbo cant take it anymore, he drops his facade and lets Mayfield know point blank what he thinks is going on. And then he seamlessly weaves it into his final trap for Dr. Mayfield, getting Mayfield to go get the dissolving sutures that Columbo would otherwise never be able to access.
I also think Columbo showing anger was part of his manipulation of Dr. Mayfield. He knew he needed to push Dr. Mayfield into making a mistake. I think Columbo is often angry but only shows it when he needs to, or feels like it is necessary. Columbo is just that good at the psychology of criminals...
Your eye for details like the plant being moved into the hallway, reused sets/music, and blurry George Holmes make your deep dives the best. I also appreciate Mayfield’s dainty ransacking of Ms. Martin’s apartment 😂

Had me chuckling hard at the rattling off of Nimoy’s starmaker classics, truly what keeps him alive and relevant in today’s culture haha. Also; I enjoy the more tangential discussions of history and such that you get into! It doesn’t detract from the episode much as I believe the analysis is just as much a part of your format as just the show itself. Keep up the great content please!

I'm glad Peter Falk didn't go over the top with Columbo too often, but this moment where he's being laughed at and a man's life is at stake was the perfect, perfect moment for Columbo to come out from cover and bring the hammer down like that. Makes it unforgettable. When I was a kid, we had a kindly geography teacher in grades 7 and 8. Funny, smart, unflappable. One day when we were down the hall in English class we heard him blow up at some kid, and the whole room went dead silent, and you better believe we were all on our best behaviour the next time we walked into _his_ class. Yeah, you never ever forget moments like that; they stay with you forever!
@@WatchitforDays I think another life being at stake is pivotal here. Columbo changed his tone with Dr. Mayfield and let him know how much he knew as a gambit to ensure the survival of Dr. Heideman by putting the fear of God into Mayfield about attempting murder during the operation. Letting a clever murderer know just how bright you are and how much you know risks them being able to cover their tracks and derailing the investigation. No matter how angry he actually was, the only thing Columbo would prioritize over bringing a killer to justice is saving the life of another potential victim (in this case, the primary target).
54:11 - even better was Nimoy’s improv when he looked annoyed at Columbo thinking ‘fool’ for nearly walking into the door instead of smirking at the mistake.
I thought there was something vaguely familiar about this Nimoy guy but couldn't remember where I'd seen him before. 🤔 But seriously, he must have been one of the most widely recognized actors of that era. Especially if he was in costume with ears... certainly justified in calling Spock an "iconic" character.
Another entertaining review! Nita Talbot might be best known for her appearances on Hogan’s Heroes for which she received an Emmy Award nomination as best supporting actress. She played the Russian spy Marya in seven episodes of the series. It is interesting how Columbo is squeamish with medical procedures, but doesn’t think twice about cracking an egg on tire iron that bashed in a person’s skull.

This is one of my favorite episodes of Columbo. Columbo losing his cool and finding the evidence to convict Mr. Spock of murder is a gem. I love your deep dives and keen eye for the uncredited actors and figuring places out. I also love how much you dragged your feet on introducing Nimoy, I kept thinking when is she going to talk about Star Trek!

At 24:59, that is a make up mirror with side lights that could change colour depending on if you were going into daylight or out on the town in the evening. My mom and sister each had one. When I saw this episode way back in the day as a kid, I was shocked to see Mr Spock as a murderer. Do not change your style of narration; it's excellent and very real.
@huskerjpg Agreed, this YT "Columbo" related Channel's narrations are really great; but, I am entirely disagreed that the actor: Mr. Leonard Nimoy, should be interchangably referred to as: "Spock". He was an actor; and, Mr. Nimoy; although, he had, most famously; portrayed his character of: "Spock; and, it did probably, become: what was, his most well known role, it was very far from all that he did, in a highly prolific career, in acting; &, in teaching acting; and, in related entertainment industry work; &, even in work unrelated to the entertainment industry. It was, in fact; certainly NOT his only role; &, his lifetime workography includes a huge number of acting related jobs that he had performed in. Most importantly, not forcing actors to be the same as the roles they've played, is crucial to the freedom that creatives like Nimoy, require, to be able to create, in the first place. Don't strip them of their dignity by dehumanizing them; in that manner, of calling the person; behind a role, by the name of a part, that the person played.
The thing behind the bathroom door was an electric makeup mirror. You would plug it . there was a switch to simulate lighting for daylight, nightlight, or office lighting.

Your eye for detail is uncanny. The whole narrative flows flawlessly. The equipment in the OR was a heart-lung bypass machine used in open heart surgery. Nowadays many heart surgeries are less invasive, using stents or laparoscope. Thanks for another stellar review

Thanks again for a fabulous review. This is one of the finest Columbo episodes ever made. Leonard Nimoy was perfectly cast and succeeded brilliantly. Columbo didn't often display anger, but the viciousness and tragedy of the crime in this story justify Columbo's flash of anger and rage. And you, as usual, earn TEN columbo cigars for your dry wit and humor as you point out so many intriguing facts and trivia related to the episode. There was great acting the whole way through this episode. The scene when Columbo got angry was a great moment in all of the Columbo series. Leonard Nimoy also hosted/narrated a show called In Search Of, which was like an Unsolved Mysteries type of show from 1977 and ran for 6 seasons. Once again, you did a great job with this episode. You are very thorough, informative, and you have a pleasant voice. I will be looking forward to your next video.

I'm glad you noticed the weird audio loops in this episode (of course you did), it's particularly jarring during the replacement valve surgery scene at the end. No wonder Spock lost his cool, with Columbo looking over his shoulder & that racket going on in the background I know Jared Martin from The Fantastic Journey being a 70s kid but for a lot of women (my mum included) it was his role as lusty Dusty in Dallas that he will be remembered fondly for! And a lovely yellow ash-tray for the bathroom - classy!
Colombo going nuts at 0:56:07 works on 2 levels… it shows Colombo is human, but also shows that the doctor isn’t even slightly unsettled by it… showing his nerves of steel.
TH-cam notified me your video was up., finally. Great episode once again. Very thorough as always. It's amazing how you find out who some of the actors are. A lot of them don't even have lines. I'm a huge Hogan's Heroes fan and Nita Talbot had a recurring role. Her ex-husband even appears in a future Columbo episode. But best of all at 92, she is still with us.

Your videos are superb! You have the perfect voice for these, it's clear, warm, positive and your humour is often both subtle and direct, which leads to some genuinely laugh out loud great jokes and observations. I'm so glad I discovered your channel, I've been a huge Columbo fan for a very long time, so it's great to enjoy these deep dives into each episode. I really appreciate the huge amount of research and detail you put into each one. The time and effort you put into every episode is really appreciated and makes each episode even more interesting and entertaining! One thing I was wondering is if you've mentioned Columbo referencing having children in one or two episodes, but then seemingly forgetting all about them. I'm sure I remember him mentioning a baby sitter for his kids in at least one episode. But then he never talks about having children ever again. Perhaps he made them up, like so many of his fictional relatives 🤔🤷♂

24:58 - That looks like an electric makeup/vanity unit. My mom had something like that back in the late 60s/early 70s. The mirror in the center could be angled up or down (here, it's angled slightly up), and was flanked by narrow panels that were angled slightly inward that could light up when plugged-in & turned on.
Excellent yet again. This episode is one of my favorites too. My main gripe is the vagueness over Harry Alexander’s fate. Unlike most, I had assumed he survived-mainly because a man of his age likely wouldn’t be killed by that fall down the stairs (his head wasn’t shown to have hit anything), and because Columbo and Mayfield never say he died. You added another reason-Columbo should have mentioned Harry when he said he thought Mayfield killed Sharon Martin. As you note, Mayfield didn’t make sure Harry would die-but he probably didn’t have to, because he did attack Harry from behind and ensured Harry couldn’t identify him. If Harry had seen him, Mayfield probably would’ve given him a fatal morphine OD. By the way, I had a Criminal Law final exam questions in which a kidnapping victim was accidentally given a fatal dose of chloroform, so that was another option for Mayfield if he’d needed it. As I was typing this, I thought of one other reason Harry might’ve survived; if the fall had killed him, the police might not have known about the morphine injection (despite seeing the bottles) until toxicology results, which take weeks now and presumably took longer 50 years ago. But if Harry were alive, he’d have said he was drugged. This mystery-within-a-mystery hardly spoils the episode, and maybe is the result of editing, but it’s a needless point of confusion.
If Harry did die, he and Sharon would easily be the two most innocent and sympathetic murder victims among all 69 episodes, and it would cement Dr. Mayfield’s status as most evil murderer. Poor Harry didn’t even know too much-he really didn’t know *anything* relevant-so his killing would have been particularly pointless and tragic.
Another fantastic WIFD. I agree with your take on Colombo’s outburst. Real emotion there. And his and Nimoy’s interaction throughout was superb. One of my faves.

I have a theory that the reason Columbo isn’t more famous in universe even though he’s solved soooo many major crimes is because he’s contaminated the crime scenes of every suspect and none of them have ever been convicted.
nah. the reason is that they didnt have internet and true crime shows streaming 24 hours a day. outside of LA, i doubt anyone would have known about a cop simply doing his job. lots of murder in california back then. People would more likely have heard of the killers but not the cops catching them. Think about it...we could probably all name several killers, but very few of us could name many of the cops that caught them. And thats now, in an age where any info is readily available
I always liked the moment that Columbo let's his act drop, particularly because Nimoy is playing Mayfield as arguably one of the smarmiest, coldest, and most ruthless murderers the series would ever see, and doubly so because Mayfield is *actively* plotting to kill as many more people as it takes for him to get away with his end-goal. Columbo often finds a way to sympathize with his prey- and I love that he can't bring himself to even pretend anymore, Mayfield is such a menace and a cad.
Wow. My friend turned me onto you channel and said you do a 'deep dive'. I was like, how deep a dive can you get in Columbo of all things? 😂 And the first thing you do "The ambulance drives past this restaurant that you see for three milliseconds, let me tell you it's entire history." Which I find both absolutely hilarious as well as entertaining. I love your observations and history side quests. I will be watching more of your videos. And an aside, this is one of my favorite episodes. And one reason I had thought about Columbo losing his temper in this particular episode as opposed to others is this isn't just about solving the mystery of a dead person. If he can solve this he still has a chance to save this old guy, which makes the situation more urgent and frustrating than usual.
I haven't even watched your video of this yet as I just saw it while taking a quick work break. And I was beyond ridiculously excited. I might need to get out more, but I hope that is more a reflection of what an awesome job you do and how much your hard work is appreciated.

I've been a fan of Columbo since watching the original broadcasts (yes, I'm that old!). I love all the details you include, including the year and make of the cars, and the identities of the more obscure actors. Oddly enough, I had just watched this episode the day before your review came out, (I have every episode on DVD) and I remember thinking, "The music playing at Dr. Mayfield's party sure sounds familiar!" Actually, I recognized it right away, and thought it was an odd choice for party music! Anyway, great job!

In the 60’s and 70’s, for some bizarre reason, brown, green and orange were THE most popular colors in home decor. BTW, you would make a spectacular detective. You forensically dissect these episodes like a surgeon to find the most obscure minutiae. Excellent!

In those days Dupont owned those color. If you wanted somthing in those colors they made

Actually the reason why Spock died in star trek 2 was because Nimoy got tired of playing the character and said he would only play him if he died. During filming he was surprised how sad he felt about never playing Spock again. Because the producers never really wanted Spock to die they created a scene in which he could possibly come back hoping he would change his mind. Nimoy said the smartest thing he ever did was not tell the producers he was having second thoughts about Spock dying because when they asked him to come back for part 3. He had already decided & knew he wanted to come back but never told them this. So he used the leverage by saying he would only come back if he could direct part 3 which they let him do. From then on he relish playing the Spock character the rest of his life.

Spock dying in Wrath of Khan was so moving I felt cheated by bringing him back (Don't get me wrong; I didn't want Spock to die in the firs place). But maybe it's just classic Trek; how many episodes of TOS had one of the main pantheon 'die' only to be miraculously back, sometimes with thin explanation (Checkov in 'Spectre of the Gun' for instance)?
I remember going to see Star Treks, " The Wrath of Khan" in 1982..I tell you what everyone had tears in their eyes in the end , when Spock died... 🥺

Nimoy was all over the place concerning Spock. First, he writes the book “I am not Spock” When casting directors didn’t get the message, he then wrote, “I am Spock” embracing the character, well, he embraced the $$$$ he received from ST Conventions. It was always about the money. Being stereotyped from playing such an iconic character known worldwide isn’t exactly a terrible thing. Look at Takei, he’s been throwing around the Vulcan hand salute for over 50 years and he wasn’t a Vulcan.
I seriously can't think of how much research and time it takes to produce these episodes. I've seen these episodes close to 100 times and the amount that I just overlooked is wild. At this point I would pay for a Columbo LA tour haha.

Columbo slamming of the carafe may be my favorite scene in the entire series; it's certainly one of them. Peter Falk improvising it was a stroke of genius, because it was so unexpected. This added to the surprised reaction Dr. Mayfield (Leonard Nimoy), and his character having the smirk wiped off of his face seeming so real, as though Nimoy didn't see the outburst coming.
While Richard Levinson, along with William Link, may have created Columbo, it was Peter Falk who brought him to life, which is why, as shocking as the scene plays out, it still feels 100% believable. Who among us, after all, hasn't known someone with a normally calm demeanor find some situation that sets her or him off?
Besides taking serious offense at being laughed to scorn by another murderer who thinks he's cleverer than Columbo, I believe our detective's taken a liking to Dr. Heideman (Will Geer'), as the two bond over little things like the doctor telling the nurse it was okay for Columbo to smoke a cigar in his sickroom, since it was the "first human thing I've smelled in two days".

Regarding Colombo putting aside his discomfort at seeing surgery: This is a recurring theme in the show, since he also forgets his fear of heights at the end of Short Fuse, season 1. It appears that he becomes focused on his imminent victory at the exclusion of everything else.

@@WatchitforDays Maybe this is reading too much into it, but it's possible some of his phobias might just be more of his disarming act, pretending he can't deal with it while actually having no issue and being able to observe every detail, so people underestimate him.
Getting seasick is another of his disarming weaknesses. Agree we have to wonder if these are feigned or not, since he's so got so many dissembling tricks.
Its really great the recognition you give to everyone involved in the making of these Columbo episodes. Between Stitch in Crime and Suitable for Framing, Mr. Averback directed arguably the best episode of each of the first 2 seasons and deserves recognition for that.

A Stitch in Crime is a standout episode. Like many of the best episodes, this one shines due to Peter Falk having an exceptional actor to play off of, as the murderer. Leonard Nimoy is perfect casting. Its also a well written, interesting case. The kind of situation you would only see on Columbo....and only works because we know the "murderer" & their motive.
Speaking of standout episode -- You're work on these Columbo reviews is top tier. As a Columbo fan, it lets me enjoy every episode like its brand new again, and learn about them in ways i never even imagined. I love when you go to locations and show how they look today. Your research is spectacular. I cant tell you how much joy your videos bring me.

I recently saw an episode. It stands the test of time. Just remembered. His voice was also in 'The Big Bang.'
I couldn't figure out how old the lady who makes these excellent videos, but now I know she is not a gen-x or baby boomer, since anyone who lived in the seventies remembers more "in Search of..." than anything else Nimoy did in the 70's. This show was constantly on in syndication. ... Apart from this She does an amazing job. There are certain things you can't know just from research.
Great Columbo episode and a great Watch It For Days episode. Terrific job, your energy and enthusiasm are contagious. We bought some tacos and made this a date night. It's become a tradition for me and the wife. Leonard Nimoy is a top 5 all time Columbo murderer, and I agree with you, the Columbo anger outburst was well timed and highly effective. Nimoys character is just that unlikable. Thank you again for doing this. Hopefully you have as much fun making these as we do watching.

I feel like the rage from Columbo comes because he thinks someone is gonna be murdered once its done he knows there's nothing he can do but get justice but he probably feels more when he thinks he can stop one before it happens.

Another great video! Thanks for all the hard work you put in for our entertainment. I don't know if anyone has mentioned this yet, but I think the thing on the counter in the bathroom scene was a make-up mirror. The mirror would rotate between normal and magnification sides. The rectangles on the left and right of the mirror are lights. They had different colors you could cycle through. Night, daylight, etc. That was so that you could apply your make-up for the correct lighting that you would be heading out into.

That moment of Columbo’s rage is easily one of the best moments for Columbo imo and while he doesnt mention Harry Alexander, that combined with this moment is what shows how human Columbo is. In his mind Columbo failed, Harry Alexander died because he couldnt catch Dr. Mayfield in time or anticipate Mayfield’s next move. Now this cold blooded monster is laughing at him and Columbo cant take it anymore, he drops his facade and lets Mayfield know point blank what he thinks is going on. And then he seamlessly weaves it into his final trap for Dr. Mayfield, getting Mayfield to go get the dissolving sutures that Columbo would otherwise never be able to access.
I also think Columbo showing anger was part of his manipulation of Dr. Mayfield. He knew he needed to push Dr. Mayfield into making a mistake. I think Columbo is often angry but only shows it when he needs to, or feels like it is necessary. Columbo is just that good at the psychology of criminals...

I'm glad Peter Falk didn't go over the top with Columbo too often, but this moment where he's being laughed at and a man's life is at stake was the perfect, perfect moment for Columbo to come out from cover and bring the hammer down like that. Makes it unforgettable. When I was a kid, we had a kindly geography teacher in grades 7 and 8. Funny, smart, unflappable. One day when we were down the hall in English class we heard him blow up at some kid, and the whole room went dead silent, and you better believe we were all on our best behaviour the next time we walked into _his_ class. Yeah, you never ever forget moments like that; they stay with you forever!

Columbo changed his tone with Dr. Mayfield and let him know how much he knew as a gambit to ensure the survival of Dr. Heideman by putting the fear of God into Mayfield about attempting murder during the operation. Letting a clever murderer know just how bright you are and how much you know risks them being able to cover their tracks and derailing the investigation. No matter how angry he actually was, the only thing Columbo would prioritize over bringing a killer to justice is saving the life of another potential victim (in this case, the primary target).
54:11 - even better was Nimoy’s improv when he looked annoyed at Columbo thinking ‘fool’ for nearly walking into the door instead of smirking at the mistake.

Another entertaining review! Nita Talbot might be best known for her appearances on Hogan’s Heroes for which she received an Emmy Award nomination as best supporting actress. She played the Russian spy Marya in seven episodes of the series.
It is interesting how Columbo is squeamish with medical procedures, but doesn’t think twice about cracking an egg on tire iron that bashed in a person’s skull.

When I saw this episode way back in the day as a kid, I was shocked to see Mr Spock as a murderer. Do not change your style of narration; it's excellent and very real.

Agreed, this YT "Columbo" related Channel's narrations are really great; but, I am entirely disagreed that the actor: Mr. Leonard Nimoy, should be interchangably referred to as: "Spock".
He was an actor; and, Mr. Nimoy; although, he had, most famously; portrayed his character of: "Spock; and, it did probably, become: what was, his most well known role, it was very far from all that he did, in a highly prolific career, in acting; &, in teaching acting; and, in related entertainment industry work; &, even in work unrelated to the entertainment industry.
It was, in fact; certainly NOT his only role; &, his lifetime workography includes a huge number of acting related jobs that he had performed in.
Most importantly, not forcing actors to be the same as the roles they've played, is crucial to the freedom that creatives like Nimoy, require, to be able to create, in the first place.
Don't strip them of their dignity by dehumanizing them; in that manner, of calling the person; behind a role, by the name of a part, that the person played.

The thing behind the bathroom door was an electric makeup mirror. You would plug it . there was a switch to simulate lighting for daylight, nightlight, or office lighting.

Thanks for another great review! I have to say the murders in this episode are some of the most dark in the series. Sharon's death is like something out of a horror film and Harry's is depressing, because he really was just an innocent guy caught up in the doctor's hideous plot.

Your eye for detail is uncanny. The whole narrative flows flawlessly. The equipment in the OR was a heart-lung bypass machine used in open heart surgery. Nowadays many heart surgeries are less invasive, using stents or laparoscope. Thanks for another stellar review

Columbo didn't often display anger, but the viciousness and tragedy of the crime in this story justify Columbo's flash of anger and rage. And you, as usual, earn TEN columbo cigars for your dry wit and humor as you point out so many intriguing facts and trivia related to the episode. For me, your best zinger was the remark about what a bummer it would be for Harry to lose that petting zoo job.

Indeed. Dr.Mayfield was a true psychopath.
There was great acting the whole way through this episode. The scene when Columbo got angry was a great moment in all of the Columbo series.
Leonard Nimoy also hosted/narrated a show called In Search Of, which was like an Unsolved Mysteries type of show from 1977 and ran for 6 seasons.
Once again, you did a great job with this episode. You are very thorough, informative, and you have a pleasant voice.

I'm glad you noticed the weird audio loops in this episode (of course you did), it's particularly jarring during the replacement valve surgery scene at the end. No wonder Spock lost his cool, with Columbo looking over his shoulder & that racket going on in the background I know Jared Martin from The Fantastic Journey being a 70s kid but for a lot of women (my mum included) it was his role as lusty Dusty in Dallas that he will be remembered fondly for! And a lovely yellow ash-tray for the bathroom - classy!

Colombo going nuts at 0:56:07 works on 2 levels… it shows Colombo is human, but also shows that the doctor isn’t even slightly unsettled by it… showing his nerves of steel.

TH-cam notified me your video was up., finally. Great episode once again. Very thorough as always. It's amazing how you find out who some of the actors are. A lot of them don't even have lines. I'm a huge Hogan's Heroes fan and Nita Talbot had a recurring role. Her ex-husband even appears in a future Columbo episode. But best of all at 92, she is still with us.

One thing I was wondering is if you've mentioned Columbo referencing having children in one or two episodes, but then seemingly forgetting all about them. I'm sure I remember him mentioning a baby sitter for his kids in at least one episode. But then he never talks about having children ever again.

We haven't reached the episodes that make us wonder if he has kids. The topic is mostly a matter of opinion because he never blatantly says he has kids. My theory is when he mentions a babysitter it's for Dog.

24:58 - That looks like an electric makeup/vanity unit. My mom had something like that back in the late 60s/early 70s. The mirror in the center could be angled up or down (here, it's angled slightly up), and was flanked by narrow panels that were angled slightly inward that could light up when plugged-in & turned on.
Excellent yet again. This episode is one of my favorites too. My main gripe is the vagueness over Harry Alexander’s fate. Unlike most, I had assumed he survived-mainly because a man of his age likely wouldn’t be killed by that fall down the stairs (his head wasn’t shown to have hit anything), and because Columbo and Mayfield never say he died. You added another reason-Columbo should have mentioned Harry when he said he thought Mayfield killed Sharon Martin. As you note, Mayfield didn’t make sure Harry would die-but he probably didn’t have to, because he did attack Harry from behind and ensured Harry couldn’t identify him. If Harry had seen him, Mayfield probably would’ve given him a fatal morphine OD. By the way, I had a Criminal Law final exam questions in which a kidnapping victim was accidentally given a fatal dose of chloroform, so that was another option for Mayfield if he’d needed it. As I was typing this, I thought of one other reason Harry might’ve survived; if the fall had killed him, the police might not have known about the morphine injection (despite seeing the bottles) until toxicology results, which take weeks now and presumably took longer 50 years ago. But if Harry were alive, he’d have said he was drugged. This mystery-within-a-mystery hardly spoils the episode, and maybe is the result of editing, but it’s a needless point of confusion.
I agree with all your thoughts here about dear innocent Harry.
If Harry did die, he and Sharon would easily be the two most innocent and sympathetic murder victims among all 69 episodes, and it would cement Dr. Mayfield’s status as most evil murderer. Poor Harry didn’t even know too much-he really didn’t know *anything* relevant-so his killing would have been particularly pointless and tragic.
Another fantastic WIFD. I agree with your take on Colombo’s outburst. Real emotion there. And his and Nimoy’s interaction throughout was superb. One of my faves.

I have a theory that the reason Columbo isn’t more famous in universe even though he’s solved soooo many major crimes is because he’s contaminated the crime scenes of every suspect and none of them have ever been convicted.
Or he IS famous and that's why he's a Lieutenant, gets to drive a busted French car, let his firearm training lapse, and carry his dog everywhere. 😂

outside of LA, i doubt anyone would have known about a cop simply doing his job. lots of murder in california back then. People would more likely have heard of the killers but not the cops catching them.
Think about it...we could probably all name several killers, but very few of us could name many of the cops that caught them. And thats now, in an age where any info is readily available

I always liked the moment that Columbo let's his act drop, particularly because Nimoy is playing Mayfield as arguably one of the smarmiest, coldest, and most ruthless murderers the series would ever see, and doubly so because Mayfield is *actively* plotting to kill as many more people as it takes for him to get away with his end-goal. Columbo often finds a way to sympathize with his prey- and I love that he can't bring himself to even pretend anymore, Mayfield is such a menace and a cad.

Wow. My friend turned me onto you channel and said you do a 'deep dive'. I was like, how deep a dive can you get in Columbo of all things? 😂 And the first thing you do "The ambulance drives past this restaurant that you see for three milliseconds, let me tell you it's entire history." Which I find both absolutely hilarious as well as entertaining. I love your observations and history side quests. I will be watching more of your videos. And an aside, this is one of my favorite episodes. And one reason I had thought about Columbo losing his temper in this particular episode as opposed to others is this isn't just about solving the mystery of a dead person. If he can solve this he still has a chance to save this old guy, which makes the situation more urgent and frustrating than usual.

I've been a fan of Columbo since watching the original broadcasts (yes, I'm that old!). I love all the details you include, including the year and make of the cars, and the identities of the more obscure actors. Oddly enough, I had just watched this episode the day before your review came out, (I have every episode on DVD) and I remember thinking, "The music playing at Dr. Mayfield's party sure sounds familiar!" Actually, I recognized it right away, and thought it was an odd choice for party music! Anyway, great job!
