    You said "arrange themselves" which is good language, because the lines are CREATED by the mass. The field is a smooth gradient, but the mass intensifies the field through itself developing poles, and the other masses follow suit like a conga line. If you used nickel or cobalt filings, I would bet the circles would be larger or smaller than iron.

    I realize that the filings are too heavy to move around the wire but if the wire had a large enough current would the filings move? If so, how fast?
