- Which compact 35mm film cameras should Ricoh Pentax bring back?
On 20 December 2022 Ricoh Imaging - the owners of the Ricoh and Pentax line of cameras - announced that they are looking at making film cameras again.
In this video I’ve shortlisted 5 cameras I would love to see them seriously consider as starting points for future compact film camera projects. As well as some classic point and shoot film cameras, there is also one or two surprises in the list.

Shooting a roll through my Pentax UC-1 aka Espio Mini right now
Very excited for this! Hopefully it’ll all come to fruition very nicely.
Yes let’s hope so! Thanks for watching 😊
I am so excited to see what they come up with! I loved hearing your thoughts on this, I know very very little about point and shoots!! I’ll be getting one if that’s what they produce!!!
Me too! Thanks for watching Suzanne 😊
I’m so glad Pentax/Ricoh is thinking about this. I was hoping a major camera company would figure it out! Looking forward to what’s next! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks so much Kary! Was fun thinking about this shortlist 😊
so glad youtube kept recommending this video, so cool to see and hope they go through with the project
Thanks so much for watching! Yes will be very exciting to see what they come up with 😄
I totally agree with you and think the R1 would be a phenomenal re-entry into film. Thunders into the space occupied by way-too-expensive cameras like the T4 and Contax T series, but could possibly fall between the Yashica and Contax prices, but for a new camera with better materials and actual factory backing. Simple enough to entice the celebrity P&S crowd, but high enough quality to woo advanced T4/T5 junkies.
Yes absolutely, the Ricoh lens on the R1 is pretty good and it would totally fill the niche you’ve described Jamie!
Thank you for the shout-out!! Love your channel!
Thanks so much Garon, loved your zine 😁🙏
Would the R1 be your choice as the initial "budget" p&s, or the second "premium" model?
I'm currently intrigued by the Pentax zoom 90 WR - a nice-side-of-typical mid 90s zoom p&s with an *integrated* infrared remote.
Hi Peter, thanks for watching! Yes I didn’t really say that but it would be my choice for the first compact model. Mh choice for the premium would be the GR1V! The Zoom 90WR has a special place in my heart ❤️ it was the first camera i ever bought in 1996! I’ve bought a couple since but unfortunately the remotes didn’t work on either, even with fresh batteries!
Still have my old spotmatic &??? I think I still have my ME around. The ME was small & easy to use.
I have the Ricoh GR1
Absolutely love it, amazing results from it.
Oh fantastic! I’ve been so close to buying a GR1/GR1V so many times 😅 one day!
Sold on an R1 remake or equivalent. Only reason I’ve never owned one is because the LCD is supposedly dodgy on most of them.
It’s interesting they list the point and shoots first. I would have thought a mechanical SLR would be the easiest thing to make.
Matt, All these are great. Love the half frame camera!
Thanks Matt! I’d be so excited for a new Ricoh half frame camera!
I love half-frame cameras. I had a Superheadz Golden Half with a plastic fantastic lens. If you are looking for that lomo look in your film photos then this is the camera. Loved it.
So glad to hear you have a Golden Half - I have one too! Fun camera, I must shoot with it again!

Hi! Which videos?
I do like your list. The one I'd love to get is a new R1s.
Yes! I’d buy 2 if they released that 😂
Totally agree with this list! I would even take a modern version of an Espio zoom lens camera! My Espio 115m is a fantastic point-and-shoot and was part of my Emulsive Secret Santa Gift and was well received by the recipient! As for the half-frame, I keep eyeing a Ricoh Auto-Half but have yet to pull the trigger (yet)! And 21mm is often not wide enough for me! I love my Nikon 14-24mm lens ;).
Ha ha well wide isn’t so bad when you can switch lenses 😂 and I’m also thinking of the auto half if I can get a good one! The Espio is a very generous secret Santa gift too!
you can get a solid slr film camera for 10-30gbp is that not affordable enough?
New film cameras is a good thing in my book
Shooting a roll through my Pentax UC-1 aka Espio Mini
Awesome, such lovely little cameras!
@@MattLovesCameras shooting the first roll through it feels nice in hand nice and compact
I completely agree the half frame camera would sell like hot cakes! I’d buy one!
Me too!
Category 4 a New K1000 or for lux a Spotmatic
yes! It will be interesting to see which mount they go for, I'd guess some kind of K mount?
Have you heard if it is going to come out soon?
Hi! They’ve only just announced the start of the project. I have no idea but if I had to guess I’d say 2024 at the earliest
@@MattLovesCameras I better subscribe to you, so that I cajn watch your video when they release it.
@@deadlycreature3359 thank you! I appreciate it! Plenty more film camera videos coming up soon!
I know pentax has never really done rangefinders, but i wish they would do a simple and reliable rf film camera that didn't cost as much as a voigtlander or leica
That would be very cool Kevin! thanks for watching!
That half frame option would be a smart move, it’s certainly worked for Kodak. It might not be what I would want, but it’s important that they make something popular and successful. I think Ricoh probably knows that they could sell new GR film cameras to the same people who buy GR digitals, and a $900-1100 brand new premium film point and shoot is honestly very appealing. Here’s hoping they can make that happen.
Yes how good would a new half frame camera be if it was tiny with auto exposure and auto focus! It would sell by the truck load lol. I didn't really touch upon the premium compact at the end of this video, but yes, I would shell out around the 1000USD mark for a new GR1V or similar!
@@MattLovesCameras totally! It’s going to be wonderful seeing whatever they end up making, they do have a great back catalog to look at, and for me as long as I can afford it I really want to support them by buying one.
With all those pixel-peepers out there, a small negative would be a looser from the start.
@@devroombagchus7460 yeah, but a lot of people who shoot film actually want to see the grain, so smaller negative = more grain. Half frame is natively vertical, so looks better on mobile devices and Instagram, and you get twice as many shots per roll, so it’s cheaper to shoot than regular 35mm. Plus it’s not like anybody is choosing between a Sony A7RV or a half frame camera. But yeah I’d agree with you that it’s not for everybody
