      Need sleeping position recommend or help for those that are fluffy, my shoulder hurt from sleeping on side because extra weight, so I find myself tossing and turning a lot. And if I prop my shoulders to much then my neck hurts. Help

    For the past ten years or so, whenever I sleep on my side or back, I have constant vertigo throughout the day when I'm awake. Only when I sleep on my stomach do I not get any vertigo, but I wake up suffocating constantly throughout the night. Since the vertigo is a real hindrance to me and prevents me from having enough energy, feeling fresh and being able to think straight, I'd take suffocating and waking up any time instead.

      Go to neurologist and or sleep doctor. Could be apnea or something. Either way don't wait. Life is too short to spend it suffering when there could be a solution.

    I trained myself to sleep on my back and perfectly flat/hands to sides, etc.. I only did it specifically for anti-aging benefits, reduced wrinkle formation, creasing, etc. I’ve actually been totally satisfied and happy with it except sometimes it does cause me a great deal of back or neck pain for some reason. So I do mix it up and lie on my side sometimes. And it seems to overall be better than sleeping on my stomach like I used to.

    I am a side sleeper and I've been noticing my shoulders are not happy with me. And I cant sleep on my back. I'm trying different positions but either my neck or shoulders hurt. I use only one pillow for my neck and one I either curl up to it I put my upper leg on. I'd love any tips! Thanks!

      Maybe your bed is the one at fault there me too I had the same problem once à switch bed for on a bit more fluffier it stopped

      I have same issue tried extending shoulders but they felt more uncomfortable so i just switch from left to right every couple nights

      @@bksd1775 I have now found if I put one shoulder fully back, where I am almost on my stomach, my shoulder is better. Or I move it more forward, but then I am almost on my back and it doesn't work as well for me. but my hand doesn't fall asleep when I move my arm back now.

      Yeah, I would definetly have that. I sleep on my tummy if im sick and I cant stop coughing at night. That helps, at least for me

    I tend to sleep on my belly or my side. I only ever sleep on my back if I'm having back problems and I just really don't want to mess anything up too bad. Though the most comfortable position for me, is on my belly.

      @AskDoctorJo had to change my lifestyle don't smoke and I've stopped alcohol I do calisthenics 4 times a week started a year ago really has helped and also eat whole foods no takeaways etc its hard but working once again many rhanks

      Not on your back, other positions may help, but being on the back tends to promote the closure of the airway. Being on your side may help, or you'll need actual medical treatment for the apnea.

      I've heard that. that's the worst sleeping position. is used to be a side sleeper but nowadays if i sleep on my side my shoulders hurt like a motherfucker. So i forced myself to become a back sleeper and i feel much better now.

    why?
    Sleeping on the right side does not let the weight of stomach & intestine to suppress heart, hence blood circulation is not affected.
    By sleeping on the right side, the heart remains in the topside, one will not have a deep sleep.

    Very good explanation Dr. But in which side the better way to sleep? Like on Right later side or left lateral recumbency or dorsal recumbency?

      After quite a few research, you may go with your left-side down position. This position has way many benefits than the right-side down position.

    Doctor, today I woke up with Vertigo symptoms. I felt like I was drunk, I don't remember what position I was sleeping in but there was no Bone Pain. I need an answer to this, cause that was a horrific experience.

      You should really go to the doctor. Vertigo symptoms can be the sign of many things. It could be an easy fix or something more serious. Unfortunately, I don't know what it could be without getting to evaluate you. Good luck.

    Hi Dr. Jo. I have a question. Isn't side sleeping bad for the shoulder that is in contact with the matress? I feel like it's to much weight supported just by the shoulder. Also, Doesn't that position tend to accentuate the rounded shoulder issues? Thank you so much.

      Not as long as you get your body/spine in a neutral position. The shoulder wouldn't be the only point of weight on it. If you are sleeping on a floor or hard surface, it would be different, but if you have a proper bed, it should not affect your shoulders. Good luck.

    Hi Dr. Jo! I am a side sleeper who has two problems: shoulder pain and hands going numb. I injured my anterior deltoid playing volleyball last year, and I have had tendonitis in my elbow off and on because I am a carpenter. (I'm super active and healthy otherwise.) My side sleeping seems to exacerbate both of these issues, and sometimes I wake up with my hands clenched, or numb because I've unknowingly put them between my knees and they fall asleep. The main problem is that I feel like the side sleeping is messing with my shoulders and elbow. I keep trying to fall asleep on my back but it's near impossible. Suggestions?

      Sometimes having a pillow to "hug" helps keep your arm(s) up in a more natural/neutral position. I have another sleeping video that shows this. You can find it on my channel: th-cam.com/users/askdoctorjo

    I have an muscle imbalance in my waist now because of my wrong sleeping positions, so i want to say you'll sleep in correct position 😌

    On my Stomach with a pillow under the shoulder so the neck isn't twisted too much... works for me...

    My neck is always cranked when I wake up! And it sucks even more because I love to sleep on my stomach but I also like side sleeping
