I started running at a waaaaay lower weight (134-140) and now I'm 180 and re-launched my running and I can FEEL my muscles and body re-learning how to run at a heavier weight. I'm much slower and I can feel pain in my ankles I didn't experience before. Buuuut I've been trying to be patient with myself and my body. Your channel has actually made me re-learn how to run so even though I'm heavier and slower, I feel my form and training is stronger! So thank you!
I also ran that same race and had a chance to meet Jess 😃 . The course is very fast, overall downhill but not by much, with only a few corners. Much better than in previous years. Also it was mostly cloudy throughout the race which is a plus. I ran with a friend and got a massive PB 43:13 which I wasn’t expecting because the training didn’t go as well as I wanted. It was a blast and meeting Jess was the icing oh the top 🤩 . Congratulations running 10 Km in 38 minutes is mind blowing!
Massive congratulations, Jess on your PB. Also, fair play to how calm and relaxed doing the pod Jess was. I agree with Jess, i prefer longer runs. I love being able to settle into a race, maintaining a good, consistent pace and just enjoying it. A Throughly enjoyable episode 👌
@runningchannel I only started running again at the beginning of the year due to injury and other health issues. Was out for 2 years. However, my current plan is Newcastle 10k in July, Cheshire half marathon 8th Sept and Humber Bridge half on 29th Sept. Can't wait 😁😁
PB weekend! I got mine this Saturday too! 10k in 40:51, shaved over 1.5min off of my last PB. It's been 2 days and I can't stop smiling because of it 😁 next stop is sub 40!
Andy at 19:15 hits the nail on the head. I ran my first marathon last year. I got sick 8 weeks out, covid 5 weeks out, and ended up with a 4h13 time, far beyond the sub 4 I desperately wanted. I've realised I need to do another one as I'm just not happy with a race where I fell apart and had to walk/run the last 17km.
Congrats to the PB! Got some good news of my own. Did my marathon on the treadmill the other day. After all these years, it is done!! Heart rate got lower the faster I ran last 90 minutes. Cried my eyes out at 28km when I knew I would make it. Tried Gels for the first time. They can¨'t be legal! What effect! Thank you for all the inspiration during the past years. I owe so much of it to you guys. I hurt like mad right now, lol. Now, just how the heck will I get back to form and run in Stockholm in 3 weeks??? Next year, I'll do 3.30h. Thank you to the whole team!
Well done Jess 👍🥵 I did my 10k PB this morning, I went from 51:48 to 50:12 and I was happy but also thought “I could have done better” that sub 50 is within sight 👍
.12 is practically sub 50. You ran 8.333 km/h and you need to run 8.374 km/h. Maybe if you wore a lighter hat or clipped your fingernails you would have done it. Nice run.
Congrats to Jess! Im training for my first ever 10k after years of long distance tri and a couple half marathon races, and this all sounds so relatable! Especially the part about being a "boring" runner during intervals 😅 But it's also so fun finding some proper speed in the legs
Is it bad to say I preferred the old set?! Camera feels too low & close, too much empty space behind Andy & Rick. Sorry, maybe I’ll get used to it! Hopefully Sarah not gone for good?
@danabc322 Yes, the presenters look like they're sitting in tiny, uncomfortable waiting room chairs! Give them some comfy chairs - they used to look so much more at ease in armchairs. 👍
Another vote for the old chairs. I was trying to figure out why it didn’t look as much like a cozy chat, and I think the chairs made a big difference. Jess was great, and I could picture Sarah trying not to interject from behind the camera.
I am the opposite of Andy, I just don't have it in me to even get close to my red line. Think of myself as a comfort runner, I will run a half marathon, I would also run a 10k but only slightly faster than my half marathon pace. I always feel that after I finish a 10k, I definitely could have pushed harder. I am trying to change that but I just seem to never go all in. I am doing the Hampton court palace 10k tomorrow but already know I won't go all in (even if I weren't recovering from injury)
Yes, me too! Even in a race or parkrun I find it hard to push to my limit, only when the finish line in sight then sprint. Need to better understand pacing and where my limits are to get out of that comfort zone.
I also bring a toothbrush with me in my EDC, along with a couple of 'wisps' (tiny brush/paste combo), refresher wipes, floss sticks. People make fun until they're smelly or have need for a floss stick (mine are bamboo). There is nothing wrong with being prepared & hygienic.
I take all my running equipment off after every run which includes my headphones, running watch & phone holder and I clean them with kitchen roll and Dettol
I'm gonna be honest, I've just read the study you guys were talking about because I was curious and it's pretty misleading to say the least. First of all, nothing was said about the exact frequency of workouts, amount of km's per week, pace, etc. So there are simply to many variables already to prove any causality. But far worse, the four studies they cited as being the source material all have widely different topics and nothing to do with this study? One is about advisable amount of km's per week for beginner overweight runners, another about half-marathoners with pace related to injury, the third about foot pronation in relation to injury and the last one was inconclusive (about running volume related to injuries). This all to say, just because it's a scientific article doesn't mean it's automatically correct. Sadly, quite a lot of disingenuous articles get published nowadays. To truly find out the impact of weight on your knees while running, all other variables should be the same or at least as similar as possible. But let's be honest here; more weight on knees, means more stress (weight pushed down by gravity) on knees during every step, means higher chance of injury. Come on man, this ain't rocket science. It's still allowed to just be honest instead of 'politically correct'. In my opinion, significantly more interesting would be something along the lines of; how much impact does BMI (or weight) have on knee injury probability? Followed by something like ''if you're this BMI, a reduction of XX% beginner training volume would be optimal to prevent injuries but still get you out there.''
The El Corte Inglés Course, traditionally, took another route that was just over 10K. It left (and arrived at) Plaza Cataluña, climbing Montjuïc mountain and entering the Olympic stadium (by stepping on the track), before returning to Plaza Cataluña.
Awesome job Jess! Congrats on an excellent outcome at Barcelona! It was great to learn more about your running history, and the struggles with speed work. Speaking of no barriers the White Nights marathon in St. Peterburg was also an experience, with no race marshals or traffic officers at major intersections. Runners are weaving through pedestrians crossing these intersections. No complaints though; one has to experience something different in a marathon.
I dont really run pb 10k but i ran a half marathon yesterday and ran a 10k pb during it 😂 gonna give it a few days to recover and see if i can knock a few more mins off it
@Jimdaewong16 yeah, the only all out I tend to do is the 5k. When I do my long runs, I like to just put on a book and plod along 👌 but I wanted my first half to be a good time (for me) so kicked the pace up
Congrats on your PB 😊well done.. 😊🏃♀️ any advice on the mental side of running? Knowing you can run the distance in training but struggle during a race.?
It's all about finding what's right for you, some people have mantras, some find music or audio books useful (if you can wear headphones during your race). It's always mentally a challenge, but you've got to focus on why you're doing it and how hard you've worked to get there.
To be honest - I wouldn't say I liked your new studio. Feels claustrophobic. The old feels much more relaxed and spacious... Btw, I haven't completed listening to the podcast yet. Will comment on podcast later on..
I had a 5.3k race last weekend and wanted to go for Sub 20 on the 5k, my goal since I started running Strategy was to try and get sub 20 and then just finish off the last 300m on an easy pace, . It was hot, the track was difficult. Long story short: I didn't make it. Got a new PB by 2 seconds or something xD. I know there's a sub 20 in this body somewhere but it didnt come out this weekend. Gotta keep on training haha.
In spain, is not really common to give medals, (only Half Marathon and Marathon, or long distance trails). On the other hand, the goodie bag is quite impressive for the entry price.

I feel like I'm relatively fast considering my details. However, my weight causes my injuries. Anyone have any tips for speed work. I'm usually only training for full marathons.
Just to let past me know that i did in fact manage to run a PB 😂 first time under 50minutes albeit not by much (30ish seconds). Now the real challenge would be to run it on a flat course 💀
Hopefully the new office has a shower? We couldn't even open the windows and AC was no match. That was awful. This is actually one questions I ask on jib interviews: "Are there any showers to use?"

Not the 28-step Korean "K Beauty" but the 34-stage "ricK beauty"
Jess, congratulations! 38 mins is an absolutely mental time for a 10k! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Ran my own 10K PB in a race this morning. I wanted to get under the hour but just missed it by a minute.
oooh noooo....
👏👏👏👏
Firstly, you tried and secondly, it's soooo close to 1 hour so this aim looks absolutely achievable (I tell myself in such circumstances).
Sarah we miss you but Jess is holding her own. It's so also odd hearing Jess speaking at a much slower rate compared to her during her runs 😂
Really glad you enjoy having Jess on the podcast!
