- One day, sometime last week... I was too lazy to pull my original vinyl soundtrack Lp of this John Barry classic, and I decided to listen to it on TH-cam... only to find out the digital remaster was nothing like the original issue. Oh! The horror!
You shouldn't have to suffer that pain!

The most amazing things about the Ipcress File, are the music, the complete anti Bond stance, and the brilliant camera angles through which we watch. So ahead of its time.
A great movie, no doubt. Classic '60s Caine.
After 58 years these words are etched in my mind...from a torture scene "My name is Harry Palmer My Name is Harry Palmer!"
Harry Palmer, the working man's James Bond... and the cooler version IMHO. John Barry absolutely nailed the score for this classic Cold War Spy film.
Even I come back to this video... and I own it. The very definition of an era. The muted trumpets, the vibraphone, the piano, the fans on the skins... the use of the cimbalom to give it that unfamiliar feel to western ears, just to make you slightly uncomfortable. This whole album is a masterclass in how to score a spy movie. That's why I paid through the nose for a clean OG copy, and that's why I shared it. Everyone should hear this. It's a beautiful work of art.
Sounds so clear and full. All his soundtrack albums are extremely well produced .
Palmer: What are you gonna tell Dalby on your L101?
Courtney: That you like girls.
Palmer: You got that right.
Courtney: You're not the tearaway he thinks you are. You also like books, music, cooking.
Palmer: I like birds best.
Great music. Great story .........They would not and could not make a film like this today

John Barry was sheer genius, a unique talent. At 68 I well remember Ipcress, but I had never had the pleasure of this wonderful full length piece. I will be enjoying this one many times over, it's brilliant, thanks so much.

I still get choked up when Jock gets shot dead in the car at the traffic lights. Quite a shocking scene somehow. You can't kill Cowlie!
I like the way the flute (?) is actually saying "The Ipcress File" over the top of the theme
Many thanks for the upload. I have the cd issue, but nothing beats the organic sound of vinyl.
One of John Barry's most evocative and outstanding scores. Barry set the template for "spy" music. I also have this original vinyl version plus the later cd release which also has dialogue tracks from the film.
Outside of Bond, Barry scored a handful of other spy films,

Just found this AND THANK YOU!!! Have always loved "The IPCRESS File" and its music. I'm one of those ones who grew up on John Barry and miss his unique scores. It's also fun to trying to suss out how he decided to score this vs his Bond scores. This is a lot jazzier and minimizes the horns and strings of Bond. It's a great score...

@Jason1920 In the dentist's chair, many years ago, I was given gas and air to help with a lengthy and painful procedure. I became convinced I was Harry Palmer in the brainwashing chair. No rusty nails available, fortunately, as things got weird for a while.
Brilliant soundtrack and a gritty style of movie, more like the 60’s were, not polished like the Bond movies, and I love the Connery Bond movies, the Danish National Orchestra does a cracking rendition, the Saxophonist, Pete!!! Plays a cracking solo
Bits of this has been used (for comedic effect) by Adam Curtis in his various documentaries. He also likes using the love theme from "North by Northwest", but that was Bernard Herrmann,

Back then, read the book, saw the film, bought the vinyl. It has been a lifetime of occasional pleasures from rencountering parts of each. Seen the film innumerable times, wore the vinyl out read the book again and again, you get the picture. A score once heard with you always I reckon. Atmosphere so strong you can stir it with a spoon.

An absolute classic. The film that started Michael Caines rise to becoming a superstar. Always remember the classic ending when the brilliant Nigel Green is revealed as the double agent. However the score by John Barry is the real winner
Yes I also love the bit where Palmer breaks out of jail and realises he's not quite where he ought to be! Sadly the film missed out a rather good scene from the book, where Harry Palmer holes up in a man's garden shed and buys him an electric fire as a thank-you present.

In places, John Barry's soundtrack has a similar arrangement to his soundtrack of Thunderball. Both films were released in the same year.

The inevitable sequels to this picture couldn't and didn't match up to it.
One of the tracks was used in the trailer. The theme played with bongos.
I do John Barry music so much, but his theme from "The Ipcress File" is so sticking. I can't get enough ot it.

Listening to this on you tube as amazon have dropped it from their listings, ludicrously replaced by the unnecessary itv remake soundtrack..in the words of Tony Harrison it's an outrage

Thank you so much, I've been looking for this version of theme everywhere, I saw it in a documentary but coudln't seem to find the version they used, which was more slower paced and moodier than the most commonly available one but I'm pretty sure this is it. I wonder if they released this one commerically for download anywhere as I can't seem to find it.

On further thought It's still dark and foggy with old yellow street lamps flickering in the low seated fog as I take a pull from my hip flask of cheap whiskey. John Barry's "The Ipcress files" inform events from one refrain to the next...(anyone care to pick up the scene where I've left off?)

I'm crudely interrupted ,by a noise,causing me to expel my last gulp and drop the flask.An Indescribable noise,that sent a shiver up my spine ,making my hair rise, and an instantaneous shot of adrenaline ,coursed through my veins,causing a a river of sweat.My apocrine glands were on overload and sweat was stinging my eyes.As I reached down ,to pick up my flask and clear my eyes ,a violent force of wind,with a thundering whistle, blasted just above me ,causing an intense pain to my ears and brain.Within the matter of a few seconds ,my mind was bombarded with questions of WTF was that, and was my hearing and senses ever coming back to me?
