He said the list contained movies that focused on the werewolves. Dog Soldiers didn't do that, it focused on the soldiers. The wolves were there, they weren't the focus.

My favorite as well, I love it so much I rarely watch it... why? I don't want to lessen the impact the conclusion has on me! Believe it or not, the Wolf Man storyline in HOUSE OF FRANKENSTEIN has a lesser, but similar effect! ( Even the "flub" of Talbot going from T shirt to black shirt can't give me pause....or paws?) Anyway, it's a testament to Creighton's/Lon's under rated talent as an actor that this movie has held up so well!

Ginger Snaps Back: The Beginning is criminally underrated, and one of the best werewolf movies ever. I personally prefer it to the original Ginger Snaps. The historic setting, the desperation and nihilism, the connection of the wolf myth to the Cree legends, it's all very unique and first rate.

I love Ginger Snaps, but The Beginning kinda disappointed me on first watch. I love history, legends, and the winter setting so I thought I'd love it, but it just didn't hold my attention. I'll eventually rewatch it and hopefully appreciate it more. I felt a little mixed about the second movie because I loved where it was going with grief and addiction, but the movie overall didn't feel like it lived up to its potential. I still prefer it to the third movie, but Ginger Snaps is my overall number 1 werewolf movie. I was never very interested in werewolves, but Ginger Snaps made a bridge for me to WANT to explore the genre more

Two movies that you might want to check out are WEREWOLF from 1956 and I WAS A TEENAGE WEREWOLF from 1957. The thing that makes these two different is that both films feature a pseudo-science-gone-wrong basis for the the lupine transformations. I WAS A TEENAGE WEREWOLF also features Michael "Little Joe Cartwright" Landon as the werewolf and prominently features the great character actor Whit Bissel.

The Werewolf (a Sam Katzman production) is actually a really good film.

I concur. I actually liked the "The Werewolf" makeup with a lycanthrope that had upper/lower fangs over the "underbite" of the 1941 "The Wolfman". In "I was a teenage werewolf", the makeup was great except for the dimestore fangs.

And Dr. George Waggner played by Patrick Macnee had his name taken from the Director of The Wolf Man 1941 George Waggner.

      Some others-->
Possibly the 1st ever werewolf who done it mystery -> 1974 "The Beast Must Die!"
2- I forget when it came out but "Weir" may be worthwhile?
3- This's currently on TUBI & is a tragic love story about a man & his now she's a werewolf wife called "Wolf Garden" - you may not like what they made the husband look like as a werewolf though, it looks a lot like the 1 in "Grimm", maybe even "Weir" or on TH-cam's "Alter" short films where they use the same idea twice for the "fully transformed werewolf" person.
Another which is old & takes awhile before you get to the werewolves is an old Night Gallery episode called "The Haunted Farmhouse" that has David Carradine & David Mcallum ( of A- Old "The Outer Limits " B - old "The Man From U.N.C.L.E." C- Old "The Invisible Man" TV show in the mid to late 1970's & other things fame)

"The Howling" was a goofy movie, great for midnight showings. The give away and it really cracks me up, every character that turns out to be a werewolf has a can of Wolf Brand Chili placed in a shot somewhere. The part that wrecked the movie for me was Dee Wallace's final transformation. She essentially turns into a Pekingese with a cute little nose. 😂

Dog Soldiers gets my vote. Honestly I think the werewolf genre has a lot of unfulfilled potential. I much prefer Wolf (1994). It's a very psycho-thriller that focuses more on the main character becoming a wolf than it does on the wolf itself. Also, I subscribe to the theory that Michele Pfeiffer's character was the wolf that bit Jack Nicholson's character in the beginning.

He gave it to Laura by sleeping with her. Steward got bit by him earlier on. They were defiantly going to be permanent wolves by the end of that night they fought. Laura is next

Newest one that's getting a lot of hype is "Werewolf By Night".
The only things wrong is that they have "Jack Russell" as a non blonde, almost Anton Lavey styled cult looking dude, plus, "Man Thing" makes a bit more than a cameo.
To a degree, it plays out like a combo of "The Beast Must Die" with more hunter types & a Werewolf who done it? Styled Mystery if you're not already a Werewolf by Night comic book fan & know some of the characters.
It would've been a "Monster Mash" but the 3 part Werewolf By Night Graphic novel could've been a movie on its own.
@ least they made "Jack Russell" look more like he did & part of the transformation scene includes what his once "finished transforming" look used to be.

Hmmm..ok maybe not a full on it's all about the werewolf but what about "Project Metal Beast"? Because once that character is shown, it IS all about the werewolf from there on in.
As far as The Howling, they made the news reporter too "cute looking" to be thought of as a blood thirsty killer & that ruined it.
There were a couple other moments that screwed it up as well.

  • @DamnableReverend

I haven't really seen too many werewolf movies, so this was instructive. American Werewolf in London is definitely a gem. 1981 kind of seems like the "year of the lycanthopres" doesn't it?
A movie that I have seen, which wasnt' on your list -- and I wonder if you know it -- is The Beast Must Die, from, I think, 1974. it's an Amicus horror/mystery film starring Peter Cushing, the recently-deceased Michael gambon, Charles Gray, Calvin Lockhart and more. It's set on the estate of this crazy rich guy obsessed with hunting, who's determined to bag a werewolf! There'sa mystery around which of the characters is a wolf, and a hilarious insertion of the studio (which the director hated) called "The Werewolf break", in which Valentine Diall's voice comes in to announcea thirty second pause in which the audience is supposed to guess who the werewolf is. The movie is terrific fun, although like some others on your list, there isn't a whole lot of werewolf action. The twists are unexpected and I do enjoy the characters quite a bit; you really get to see them interact and all their different personalities, leading you to draw conclusions about who might or might not be the werewolf.

Daniel, thanks for this. I wish that lycanthropy was more of a Hulk-like "superpower" than the old bloodsoaked Jekyll-Hyde curse, but I can still appreciate the curse. I like it when the father surprises Michael J. Fox in the bathroom -- that dad is more the kind of werewolf I think I would turn out to be. Curse of the Werewolf is interesting -- if I recall correctly, it's as if the father becomes a werewolf simply by being brutalized and reduced to an animal while in prison. Jenny Agutter -- yeah, I hear you, I hear you. (I think all fours simply makes more sense, you can run -- and climb, and stalk -- better.) As great as Chaney Jr is, I think we also need to give a special shout out to Maria Ouspenskaya. Can't argue with your top two, although I have found myself diverted by Wolf -- Jack Nicholson, Michelle Pfeiffer, James Spader -- and the Underworld movies, in which Kate Beckinsale is a vampire assassin in black leather who falls for a "lycan." Also, might we call the Beast, from versions of Beauty and the Beast, a peculiarly articulate and urbane werewolf? My favorite version of Beauty and the Beast -- sorry, Disney -- is the old French version directed by Cocteau, I think there's a werewolf vibe going on there. So good to see a spotlight on a genre which I think could use more love and imagination. Happy October.

Oh and you say Eddie Quist's transformation in The Howling serves no purpose but it does. He changes specifically at this time to scare the crap out of the reporter who's about to expose him and the others at the Colony before he kills her.
