    More about music distribution: • Music Distribution Bre...
    So many people think that once you're done recording a song, you just throw it on to a digital distributor, and everything's gravy. Everything's done. That's all you got to do. But that's not it, man. If you're doing this stuff for yourself as an independent, you got some paperwork to do. There are other means to get paid off your music other than doing live shows. Of course, there are a million ways you can promote your stuff but you got to get your paperwork right otherwise you're promoting your songs and you're not going to get paid. One of the first things you want to do is get your song registered with your PRO, or your Performing Rights Organization. These are organizations like ASCAP, BMI, or SESAC that take care of your radio royalties and your sync licensing royalties. So if you get placements anywhere on a TV show, an app a game, anything like that, they'll collect royalties for you. The one I personally use is ASCAP, or the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers, but feel free to research these organizations. There are two major ones in the United States: ASCAP and BMI. They all have their pluses and minuses but all essentially do the same thing. If you don't have an account already. I definitely recommend signing up as a writer and a publisher so that you get full royalties for your songs. There is a one-time application fee for whatever type of account you're signing up for. The writers and publishers account was 100 bucks and you're done. There are no recurring fees, they just pay you now or collect money for you. Anyway, super simple off the bat, you're going to register a new work. I'm not going to go in-depth with this. But you will put all the writers' names, and their ASCAP information or BMI information in these sections here, along with their publishers now if you don't necessarily have a publisher you are the publisher. If you don't have an official publisher, it's not a big deal. Make one up for yourself. I recommend starting an LLC, an S corp, or whatever type of business you want to start. At the very least you want a doing business as "company name" simply so you can set up a business bank account to get your stuff separated from your personal bank account. So you got your song registered with your PRO the next thing you want to do is hit the copyright office right@copyright.gov You're going to make an account. It's called an eCO account or eco account, as they call it. And it's all very simple on this site. There are a lot of tutorials on this site to help you get through the system and learn what applications you need. And music copyright there are two different types of applications one's for the lyrics and the melody and one's for the actual sound recording. Usually, the sound recording copyright will suffice enough for you. But if you want that extra protection for your lyrics and your melody of the song, you're going to want to get that second copyright. The next thing you're going to want to do is set up your song or album with your digital distributor, because they're going to give you the numbers that you need to plug into some other sites like your UPCS and your ISRCS. Let me show you what I mean. Here's the back office of my distributor. Let's look at this instrumental album. that I put out and you'll see a UPC for the album is here. And the ISRC's for the songs are here.
    For each song, they'll have their own identifying number. Once you have the UPC numbers and the ISRC numbers, you're going to be good to go so now I'm going to take these numbers and go back to my ASCAP account and go to the song so apart. Inside the information of the song, there are all kinds of data you can put in. The most important is identifying numbers like UPCS and ISRCS.

    I have wasted about 4 hours on TH-cam trying to find someone to explain this process. Most of the videos are from people trying to act cool that are actually trying to push or sell something. Finally, a video that is straight forward, accurate, and clear. Thanks for this.

      Hey! I’m so glad you reached out. But, to be honest, I’m not really in a position to release other artist’s music. That being said, I’ll help, where I can, with any questions you might have about releasing a single. The first thing I’d do is become a member of whatever Performing Rights Organization is offered in your country and learn how to navigate their song registration process. Then I’d look into digital music distribution companies…DistroKid, Ditto, CD Baby are some major players, or check out Amuse.io for a free option. I hope this info helps get you started!

    • @jimmymakemusic
      @jimmymakemusic  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good Question! No, it does NOT replace them. SoundScan is used to track sales (streams), whereas Songtrust and Sound Exchange are royalty-based platforms. To make it even more confusing, SoundScan has since been replaced with a different system called Luminate by Billboard. The new links for that are in the description and in the "pinned" comment of this video. Hope this helps a little!

      In short, you only have to register a song from ONE of your accounts and it’ll show as a “work” in the other. While you’re registering a song it’ll ask for all writers info…then all publishers info. I definitely recommend picking one or the other to register songs from. That’ll help keep things organized as you’re catalog grows.

    When registering your single/album with Soundscan for billboard, do you have to be from the US or Canada? I'm from the UK so when it wants required information like my phone number it wants a US number format, so I assume you can't actually register outside of the USA or Canada? I cannot find anything online about this. Thanks!
    EDIT: Sorrry just another question, In the UK our government website states this: 'You get copyright protection automatically - you don’t have to apply or pay a fee. There isn’t a register of copyright works in the UK.' Does this mean when registering for my PRS and MCPS that's enough for me?

    • @jimmymakemusic
      @jimmymakemusic  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      To my knowledge Soundscan only serves the US and Canada. While you can use European ISRC and UPCs to register songs, Soundscan will only gather data from North American sources. As far as UK copyright, you’re absolutely correct. It seems you’re protected as soon as you write the song, and I imaging your MPCS would help resolve any disputes. Keep in mind that the UK music business is out of my realm, so maybe other UK artists can comment with more accurate information.

    Is it rational to register on the website of a PRO such as ASCAP, BMI, etc., if I am not a US citizen? I'm asking this because there doesn't seem to be a similar service in my country. Also, I write rather niche instrumental music, and I highly doubt that anyone will want to use it in stores, on the radio, etc. Would DistroKid (or any other distributor) + Songtrust be a good option for me?

      Use this one...keep in mind BDS and Mediabase have "merged" into one entity now. You only need to upload here:

    You're able to register your song before the song is released? I thought it has to be done after it's released... and if it's possible, do you recommend doing it before hand

    • @jimmymakemusic
      @jimmymakemusic  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Good question. You definitely should register your song(s) before they are released. This ensures your tracks hit the ground running and no paperwork has to be backtracked. You can register with your PRO as soon as you literally write the song. Then once you have more info from your distributor, like ISRC codes and release dates, you can edit the track info in your PRO to keep everything updated. Also, as soon as you have the ISRC codes from the distributor, you can start registering with the soundscan and the others. You do not have wait for the tracks to be officially released. Hope this helps!

    'As of November 1st, 2022 BDSradio airplay tracking services have been merged into Mediabase. This means you no longer have to register in two different spots for your airplay tracking." Is that true?

    All this hoop jumping under the guise of "protecting your music" is really just there to make the average musician/songwriter even more vulnerable. I mean your average musician/songwriter especially those that aren't too well off won't have the time or money to jump through all these hoops. All this is just here to help the "established" rob the "unestablished."

    Thanks, always confused where to Start, then 1.PROs 2.National Copyright 3.Distribution 4. Add ISRC to PROs and Copyrights ?

    • @jimmymakemusic
      @jimmymakemusic  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Honestly, I didn't do a good job of explaining this. It kind of depends because not all PRO's let you edit info... AND the copyright office "requests" an ISRC but doesn't "require" it. So your best bet might be to get everything set with your distributor first, so you get the ISRCs and UPCs you might need. Just set your release date out a month or so. Then copyright and PRO. You can add Harry Fox and Mechanical Licensing Collective (or a Publishing Admin like Songtrust) to the list...along with SoundExchange.

    So having a publishing administrator, they do none of this?

    • @jimmymakemusic
      @jimmymakemusic  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Some might... but publishing admins usually just register songs with PRO's (ASCAP, BMI, SESAC) and mechanical licensing agencies (Harry Fox, MLC). They don't typically handle copyright or encoding for sales data and radio air play.

    If you use a stage name and have it listed as a pseudo name with your PRO. Which name do you use as the writer? Your birth name you registered with PRO as? Or your pseudo name? Hope you can help 🙏🏻

    • @jimmymakemusic
      @jimmymakemusic  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great question. You’ll want to use your legal birth name when dealing with writer’s credit…or any official documentation. It’ll streamline any administration stuff, and you’ll want your real name on any 1099 tax forms you might receive.

      @@jimmymakemusic thank you, I appreciate your reply... what about the section where you list “artists” if I am the artist as well as the writer but again, go by a stage name, do I list my stage name there? And if not, how will the song eventually get linked back to my legal name and registered song of its being posted and listened to under my stage name? Sorry In advance... this part of the music journey is fairly new to me. Greatly appreciate your input 🙏🏻

      @@moonchild6273 Don't be sorry! This stuff gets confusing. Under "Artist" or "Performer" you'd put your stage name. Keep in mind that many artists don't write their own songs. So, having a "writer" section and an "artist/performer" section makes sense. It also helps with bands where not everyone is a songwriter.
