- Joaquin Phoenix is getting a lot of praise for his performance as the Joker in the upcoming Joker Movie. People have naturally been drawing comparisons to the previous live action Joker, Heath Ledger. Only, Heath Ledger wasn’t the last live action Joker before Joaquin Phoenix. There was another guy in between the two that nobody likes to talk about. Well today, Will is going to talk about Jared Leto and his time as the Clown Prince of Crime.

I neglected to mention Cameron Monaghan from Gotham, mostly because I didn’t watch Gotham. However, I am well aware of the cult following his portrayal of Joker (or Jerome or Jeremiah or whatever) has. In many ways, the popularity of his Joker eclipses the popularity of the show itself, putting him in line with other Jokers who go on to live in pop culture beyond the Batman they’re associated with. Which is more than I can say for poor old Jared Leto.
Gotham was rough until halfway into season two. By that point, it got really interesting and the creative teams just rolled with the campiness and made it fun. It was definitely aimed for Bat-fans. I loved it but can admit its many, many faults. Although the series finale was vastly underwhelming.
Gotham was garbage...titans is way better.
You should give Gotham a chance, I decided too and its in my top ten shows ever.

They were probably assuming he'd steal the show with what little screen time he had, so they could then make more money with a Joker movie.

I think it went bad because DC wanted to portray him as a "sexy" Joker. When the Joker is supposedly a force of nature far removed from that, or at least not on the nose about it.

It wasn’t so much Leto’s portrayal, but the really crappy material he was given to work with. I don’t fault him at all.

Millennials like him and the gangster rap crap that goes with it including some dumb blond thrown in the mix oh yeah cool dude. Whereas Phoenix is more for serious critics of good films. I watched this Phoenix Joker, Venom and Dr Strange not because they were superhero films but because of the anti-hero quality and spiritual learnings within them.
I tot he was okay but I think the character design really fuck him up... all that tattoo... I cannot take him seriously.... damaged tattoo don’t make sense at all!
If the actor is good, he can make a character decent even when the script is bad.
Ewan McGregor was a good Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars even though the script was bad.
Admittedly, I think that Jared Leto joker had the ability to be captivating if properly written.
and a bit better execution. The laugh and flamboyantism was not spot on but weirdly placed here and there. Still more of a directing flaw than anything else.

We can relate to Phoenix's and Ledger's version of Joker because they are grounded, mysterious and feels like someone real life, someone original. But Leto's joker gave "someone pretending to be Joker" vibes.

Jared Leto as Joker is great. The direction the Suicide Squad was taken by the director was garbage.
He was fine the problem was the direction his look is good but David Ayer tried to reinvent joker as a David Ayer character.He feels to removed at times from traditional joker when you combine that with the look it makes Jared feel more else world instead of regular joker that's why he divides people.If exceoted for what he is version an all he's fine not the best joker or the worst he ranks 3rd to 4th he hasn't had enough of development

Star wars prequels are shit but any time Ewan McGregor is on screen he brings a huge amount of life to the movie, when Leto is on screen the movie goes from being horrible to being wince worthy.

I think that the most drastic of all the problems with suicide squad was the editing. I can't really agree or disagree with your judgement because joker's only really in like 6 minutes of it.
It's very charitable of you to call Leto's behavior towards his co-stars on Suicide Squad "dedication". I'm not that charitable.
I mean if it was "method acting" that had him sending dead animals and used condoms to his costars then it's obvious that the director and writer just thought the Joker is character who's edgy for the sake of edge. Leto obviously had no idea either. Either that, or the content that never made it into the movie had him convinced that this was a good character. Guess we'll never know.

I don’t hold the Joker against Jared Leto. He’s usually pretty good in everything and there wasn’t much he had to work with when it came to essentially the Hot Topic version of the Joker. Edginess without a shred of irony. ESPECIALLY contrasted against his predecessor who happened to be the best Joker by a country mile.

My thoughts exactly. He was too much of a side note. The thing with Joker is that he's in control and driving the story forward with the rest just trying to keep up and reacting to him. He's the chaos that others are trying but failing to predict. I didn't get that vibe at all from how they wrote Leto's Joker into the story.

he's an insecure crackhead who tried too hard to look "dangerous and edgy". Nothing unique about him. Just search in brothels, bars, nightclubs, you will see tons of guys that look and act exactly like him. Also Joker in comic is way more different. I really liked Leto’s Joker to be honest. It was cool to see more of a gangster/cartel Joker instead of a lone wolf criminal. Most Jokers wear that purple suit/tuxedo, I thought Leto’s shirtless leather jacket thing with tattoos was badass and cool and new. His Joker was different and refreshing and people are complaining that it wasnt enough like previous Jokers.

That joker was easily forgotten. The best they could have done with that take on him: was to eventually reveal that he was infact Robin, who was corrupted by the real Joker. Good luck with that theory now that the DCU movie universe is in shambles.

One of the few things about Suicide Squad is how stylistic it is. I actually liked how over the top it was with all the characters outfits. And even Jokers design was interesting to me. Too bad the movie itself wasn’t good but I’ll never knock that movie for its style.

I look at this Joker as a "what if, multiverse" though I am not happy with the fact the cut so much, he was not around enough to see just what he did.

Burtons Joker is a strange one, his 1st pick to play Joker was Brad Dourif, but when he told the studio, they said who? the rest is history.
Burtons Joker was more so done around JN, his age and, well his build.
A animated Joker (my fav) stayed close to the comic, Gotham TV show had to be different because it came after Heath, no one wants to draw comparisons, and personally I did not like it.
Leto I liked, radical look and acting, a what if Joker.
Now about Heaths Joker, great performance, but it was not his creation, the voice most know was taken from Tom Waits, but the acting, movements and mannerisms were taken from a low Budget film called Death Machine.1997 I think.
There is a crazy new age long scraggly haired guy, wearing a long coat, moves like Heaths Joker even delivers lines the same way, that actor is Brad Dourif.
I think the Joker he was going to do for Burton ended up been used in Death Machine, if that was the case and had studio allowed it, you would have had a Joker like TDK, in Burtons original movie.
This Joker was a hammy performance dude. I hate to bash on Jared for it, because I think he has talent and is probably a much better actor than most of his generation, but it is what it is.

I'm 36 years old and have been able to experience the 3 cinematic Jokers, animated Jokers and saw Caesar Romero's tv Joker in reruns. That being said, I can honestly say without a shadow of a doubt Jared Leto's performance was the worst as the character and he's a good actor but it just didn't work.

I don’t understand how people can hate on Leto’s joker so much when he had most of his scenes cut in suicide squad and was only on screen for 5 minutes. I feel so bad for Leto not only did he work so hard for something only to have all of it cut and then on top of it have stupid toxic fans of this franchise dumping on his 5 minutes of performance we saw. Dog Feva that is not what happened. Ledger overdosed on sleeping pills because he had a pre-existing sleep condition that had nothing to do with his role as the Joker.
The thing I'm most sad about with Leto's Joker is how it could've been an amazing way to "modernise" the character, by making him more about stuff we're familiar with NOW at least in entertainment: gang culture, instant up to date technology etc. But with the final product they either went overboard (wacky tattoos and just...weird behaviour) or barely scratched the surface (Joker has gangs but doesn't interact meaningfully with them). Joaquin Phoenix is retrying a "modern" adaptation by focusing on mental health and social upheaval, which is a great if not *better* approach. Still, doesn't mean I'll get over what COULD have been with Leto anytime soon 😔

Jared Leto's Joker is a new fashion Joker and with a better role and more scene time, he would have been one of the best Jokers. I feel Jared Leto's Joker should come back but with a different role and more scene time. And he certainly looks good with Harley Quinn no doubt about that.
I loved Leto as the Joker. He gave it a “natural Born Kilers” feel. I would love to see more of him as a Joker. The problem is much of his footage was cut from Suicide Squad. ☹️

I agree. Leto wasn't as bad as people say but he's definitely not my favorite. He did his best but all in all the fault is that they tried to throw him in suicide squad knowing there's nowhere to really take it with him in the film

@@cino3004 Its not all editing. The movie itself has already gotten a high score on Rotten Tomatoes just off Joaquin acting alone. If Jared Leto was a good movie. You would see reviews saying that he was a good Joker but you dont. Saying that he did not have enough screen time wont justify his shitty acting. More Leto screen time as Joker equals more shit. The Suicide squad movie even did poorly but people still love the actress the played Harley Quinn and believe she did a great job. Wont here that for Letos Joker
He didn't need "more screen time" I already had to cringe wherever he was on screen I didn't need to any more.

Jared Leto had some decent moments as joker but the character seemed like it wasn't very flushed out. It was almost like a prop based performance instead of a realized character.

Leto's Joker was great, the only issue was he followed Ledger and his version of the Joker took it to a whole new level. The Suicide Squad movie has already attained a cult following and will live forever because of it no matter what the "popular" crowds say.
Tbh I think that even though Jared leto’s joker was a miss and wasn’t mind blowing the character really fits with Harley Quinn and makes her shine
I still remember being so excited one of my favorite actors was cast to play the joker, then seeing those GOD AWUFUL "hahaha" tattoos all over him and immediately got depressed lol
Being an actor is sorta like being in a band or being a stand up comic, you go for it and create something. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. To be real, it doesn't work more frequently than it does. But you move on and focus on the hits and forget the misses.

If Leto ever gets another chance at the character, I think he would crush it. From what he was given to work with, I think he was a unique and awesome take on the character. But it seemed like the studio cut a lot of his content. That being said, Phoenix absolutely killed the new role.

I loved Jared's joker. It was poorly written though and the costume department lost their damn minds. However, I love the edgy sexy version he portrays next to Harley Quinn, it just works in that contexts.
I was so disappointed at the direction they took with Leto’s Joker. When they cast him in though it was a great call. But, somebody had to miss on Joker. There’s been a couple poor Batman actors so it was due I guess.

Honestly, it wasn't bad in my opinion. The movie wasn't for him, he didn't get a decent shot at the Joker. Jared Leto needs another shot at it in a proper movie with proper screen time

That is not the Joker. That is Jason Todd who took over the mantle after killing the original Joker.
I liked Jared Leto's version of The Joker and would love to see more of it. There are so many versions and origins of The Joker in the comic books and I love to see all of the different takes on the character. The joker was never supposed to be a big part of Suicide Squad, the movie wasn't about him... so how was he supposed to steal the show when hes there as a supporting character. I hope they do bring him back and elaborate on his character. Also... SOOOOOOO PUMPED for the new Joker movie with JP!!!

I'm not a millennial and Heath Ledgers Joker was an incredible performance and to this day i find it hard for anybody to disagree that Heath Ledgers Joker is probably one of the best acting performances there has ever been of any character.
Jack Nicholson’s Joker is perfect for the universe he was in. Heath Ledger even said he would have refused to take the role if the universe was the same. But he gladly took the role because Chris Nolan’s world was unique enough that he knew he could bring something new to the table

Suicide squad WAS a really bad movie but the scenes with Will Smith, Margot Robbie and JARED LETO made this movie memorable.

I saw The Joker (2019 one) and it's one of those ultra-rare movies where you walk past the movie poster and get flooded with nostalgic emotion and just think of how hecking amazing it was. Seriously my favourite movie of this year (even against End-Game like jesus-). My family still talks about it a week after.

Jared Leto's joker fits into Suicide Squad. I actually think Suicide Squad wasn't that bad, especially if you ignore the rest of the DC stuff. But when you compare it to legendary works such as The Batman series, and now allegedly Joker, yeah it was pretty bad and could have been better. The concept for Suicide Squad is awesome... but I don't think it could have been a darker realistic thing as Batman and Joker were.... it's more Marvel-ish - comedic and for kids. So yeah, it could have been better, but there's no way anyone (at least I speak for myself) was expecting Jared Leto's joker to be anywhere near Heath Ledger's and I don't think Phoenix's is either. It's two completely different things that are hard (or even unfair) to compare... although both are strangely made by the same studio which makes no sense whatsoever.

You mention that these jokers are remembered more fondly over their respective batman/bruce’s, maybe jared leto’s joker failed because there was no batman/bruce?
If batman was styled or presented differently, leto’s ‘edge-lord’ style could have been a response to that?
It’s really hard to say anyone in SS was bad... the movie was bad. I thought Leto was fine given the style of the movie and the fact that the movie was horrible from a studio standpoint. I would love to see Leto do the same Joker in Gunn’s SS movie and see what that would look like. I think he could be great still when removed from the dumpster fire of the first movie.
