Masterful. The studio who created this took over 5 years to make it, and this was their first and only game ever made. They pursued pre and post video production after this. A gem from many of our childhoods.
This game sparked my love for videogames. (Leaving the next paragraph more for myself than for others but you're welcome to read it.) When I was a kid, my dad bought me a ps1 and one of the games was Heart of Darkness. My dad probably didn't mean to give me such a difficult game for my small brain but I'm absolutely thankful for it. This game taught me the age old mantra of "If at first you don't succeed try, try and try again." at a very young age. Getting eaten alive was pretty violent for a kid to be seeing but I did not see it that way. It was a challenge and I wanted to overcome it. I HAD to overcome it. As for the graphics, they may look outdated now but my memories of it are vivid. From the cutscenes to the actual game itself, my young brain looked at it all in awe because I had only played on a Gameboy color before and I just couldn't imagine the scenes in the story books I read (other than the picture books, of course. I'm looking at you, Tarzan the picture book). Heart of Darkness gave me a heart that conquers. From the smallest of daily challenges to the biggest life-changing decisions, I have my dad and this game to thank for the spark that started it all. I love you, dad.
Same its really weird when your memories of an older game is so realistic and good and then actually seeing it can hit you like a truck, because of how you remember it differently like it looked better than reality even
Demon Stone did that to me, I spent a month grinding it before I finally beat it. To this day it's one of my favourite games. I always thought this game has that 90s pixar movie look. The game looks and plays amazingly well especially compared to its time and even today. The animation quality and the attention to the detail is mind blowing.
There should be more protagonists like Andy. Not afraid to have fun, relax and be a human, never letting himself beat down by others, and extremely inventive, creative and intelligent. Not exactly a boy genius, but a boy who kept his creativity unsoiled.
An ambitious game with an extremely long development cycle (or hell in this case) of 6 years, with numerous delays and platform changes, initially announced for Panasonic 3DO, but finally released for PS1, Saturn, PC, an even an Atari Jaguar version announced, however, that console was not commercially viable. With a great hype behind it, but by the time it got released, 2D platforming was dying. Luckily, the end result was amazing.
Glad someone knows the history behind this amazing game. I couldn't believe when I heard it took 6years to create this game but then again makes sense honestly in my opinion I think it's a masterpiece
so much time to develop the game but very disapointed when I bought it because I bought it the first day at full price, started at 2PM and finished at 5PM :-(
I’ve searched for almost 15 years to find this game. This was a big part of my childhood, the game felt so special and unforgettable in the time and after seeing this all again, I really understand why.
Shortly after this game was released, my uncle bought a copy for me. We always installed those games on his computer first and then on my computer. He liked it so much that he bought another CD for himself. Games like this one, Pitfall, Time Commando, Quake, Doom, UT1999 etc. were part of my childhood. Good old times...
I hear ya! I had the same feeling on some of the Witcher quests (especially the isle of mists quest) when i watched my brother play, couldn't remember if it was a book i read or some dream of mine until i played it.
@@mihalyspenger7617 What?! I more or less got traumatized by it. I think the version I had was for PC and had gore in it, when the shadows got you. At least I recall you being torn to pieces. And I was about 6 years old. The cinematics at the beginning make it seem so innocent, just to then be greeted by something like that. It's bs and down right disturbing. And note. I've been playing GTA3 and Wolfenstein without any problems at that time.

@@mauromasterx simple. I’m quite old. By the time I played Heart of Darkness, I already spent countless hours on Megaman and such. It was not that hard of a challenge but man did I enjoy it.
They don't make platforms like this today. Great production value. The soundtrack alone is pretty amazing, it makes the whole game feel like a Spielberg/Williams thing. How many games today book the London symphony for a soundtrack?
This game marked my childhood, I was just 9 years old. I remember playing thi for months, couldn't sleep properly until i finished it. Now I'm 34... great memories. Pandemonium was also a great game.
You said what I was thinking. Man this game was quite brutal even tho its a kids game. Kid gets his neck broken by the shadow monsters. Kid gets eaten alive Kid gets squashed etc
Some dude made "hode" which is an open source reverse-engineering of the game engine, so now it can be ported to modern consoles/PCs (hell you could put it on your phone too)
@The Fallen One I mean if we can extract the assets as standard image files, we could just use AI to upscale all of them and then recompile with the open source engine as an "HD Remaster". We have the engine source, which I assume also means we have the knowledge to know how to extract all the animation frames as images to potentially repack them and use higher quality ones. This isnt the official way to do it but it could be ported to Homebrewed consoles
@The Fallen One Well it would be legal as long as you own a copy of the game. For example, the build process would extract the images from the game files and do all of it for you, but it would require you to actually own the game files to extract from (AKA own the game) for it to complete This is similar to how the Mario 64 PC port is being made. The game engine itself is open source but you need to supply your own ROM file for it to compile and play. This requires you to own a copy of the game so it's totally legal to do
I remember as a kid that I used to play the demo version of this on PC and found it really challenging to get past just the first 5-10 screens. This game had a very distinct, eerie vibe that I actually enjoyed as much then as now. It stuck out to me then as it does now. I really enjoyed playing the demo version as a kid, even though it was hard and I actually found it somewhat scary and disturbing. I still think about this game every now and then and that just goes to show what a peculiar piece of gaming gem this really is.
So many great memories! Including how difficult it was as a young kid. Back when games were challenging and didn’t hold your hand every step of the way.

This boy must have really loved his dog.. thanks for the trip down memory lane tho, never got to finish this game as i found it incredibly hard and i was a lil fart nugget but found it amazing to see how it did end.
MAN!!!!!!!!!! I HAVE SEEN THAT GAME BEFORE!!!! Back in around 2001-2003, I saw my cousin playing it on his computer (and having quite the hard time at it). I never knew its name, nor have I seen or heard about it anywhere else since then. The only memory I had about what the game was like was that you played as a little guy around some reddish rocky wasteland with large creature fossils and the enemies were some frantic dark things which nobody could quite tell what exactly they were. I have just seen this video on my TH-cam recommendations, and the cover, together with the game's title, got me curious. I had never seen that opening cutscene, but as soon as the actual gameplay started, I thought "Wait...". By the time you got to the third screen I knew it could only be this one game! Thanks a lot for the upload! I think I might get that game and play it myself, like I always wanted to when I was little.

omg same here.Too afraid to play it but its a memory to me
played the demo of it as a kid, just remembered it fondly today and now i crave a remake to get a chance at it
Some levels took me days to pass 😂
I had problems with the dinosaur things that come out the wall 🤣
True
This game was literally ahead of it's time for whoever designed and developed the game just on the next level
I always thought this game has that 90s pixar movie look.
The game looks and plays amazingly well especially compared to its time and even today.
The animation quality and the attention to the detail is mind blowing.
The smooth sprite animation certainly gives it a bit of an 'old animated disney film' feel to it.
There should be more protagonists like Andy. Not afraid to have fun, relax and be a human, never letting himself beat down by others, and extremely inventive, creative and intelligent. Not exactly a boy genius, but a boy who kept his creativity unsoiled.
fuck my life, I just saw it on my TH-cam recommended, I forgot that this game existed
This game used to give me nightmares as a kid. I've been trying to find it forever.
Luckily, the end result was amazing.
thanks for the background information
Glad someone knows the history behind this amazing game. I couldn't believe when I heard it took 6years to create this game but then again makes sense honestly in my opinion I think it's a masterpiece
Stil os an amazing game wen played on a good crt monitor
CG animation was the most popular thing back then.
so much time to develop the game but very disapointed when I bought it because I bought it the first day at full price, started at 2PM and finished at 5PM :-(
I’ve searched for almost 15 years to find this game. This was a big part of my childhood, the game felt so special and unforgettable in the time and after seeing this all again, I really understand why.
This game was ahead of its time. I'd buy a remake or remaster.
same, I am wondering who owns this IP now.
Way ahead! Atleast by 10-12 years.
This and abes Odyssey 👍
Same. They should make a movie too, the game was basically a movie anyway
I thought I hallucinated this whole game till I saw the little icon in my suggestion box.
I hear ya! I had the same feeling on some of the Witcher quests (especially the isle of mists quest) when i watched my brother play, couldn't remember if it was a book i read or some dream of mine until i played it.
This game looks amazing! I can’t believe I’ve never even heard of this.
This game was too scary as a kid to be rated E.
Mihály Spenger this used to scare the crap outta me😂😂
ye i was scared too dont worry :D
Mihály Spenger ah ah!! Pussy!!😂😂😂😂kidding😂😂
@Connormgs Damn right

What?!
If any game deserves a remaster these day its this game, its such a unique little underrated and I love it
Wow okay this opened up a weird memory hole full of strange emotions that I wasn't ready for...
Omg dude... I am exactly feel the same way Oo
THAT'S THE ENDING???? I have played this game since i was 9 years old and i only have the disc 1.. now I'm 27 i feel i fulfill my childhood gameplay.. thank you 🥰
OMG it still looks phenomenal!! The hand drawn style will always be ageless. Great memories
At the time, my parents were paying for my games if I had good grades.
I finished this one in a day. They hated me.
This is a great game. Very unique.
they should be proud, how on earth you beat this on a single day
@@mauromasterx simple.
Everybody say it with me! :
THIS
NEEDS
A
REMAKE!
You said what I was thinking.
Man this game was quite brutal even tho its a kids game.
Kid gets his neck broken by the shadow monsters.
Kid gets eaten alive
Kid gets squashed etc
Fuck yes
For example, the build process would extract the images from the game files and do all of it for you, but it would require you to actually own the game files to extract from (AKA own the game) for it to complete
This is similar to how the Mario 64 PC port is being made. The game engine itself is open source but you need to supply your own ROM file for it to compile and play. This requires you to own a copy of the game so it's totally legal to do
My childhood never beat it but i tryed like hell too and forgot the name and been looking for ways to find it for years thank you
I remember as a kid that I used to play the demo version of this on PC and found it really challenging to get past just the first 5-10 screens.
SimonTessem same, was pretty hard on pc, but I managed as a kid back then to complete it! An amazing game, with lots of funny cutscenes!
That's quite a feat!
Man! This game randomly came to mind today. I used to play this as a kid with my dad. So NOSTALGIC! And still a gamer today!
It's like Oddworld meets Never-Ending story and Jimmy Neutron haha
Fire Brand, and let’s not forget Jim Henson’s The Dark Crystal.
@@Beanie-Inkling2749 Dark Crystal also had similar style practical effects...
Shit...that's spot on, i fkn love oddworld
So many great memories! Including how difficult it was as a young kid. Back when games were challenging and didn’t hold your hand every step of the way.
Have you played Sekiro? ^^
@wjzav1971 I didn't know Sekiro was released in 1998
Omg this is recommended to me now in march/2019.
I tried to find this so hard, i searched for years now, played that on 2002/03, but back in the day, was not sure what the name was about, i learned english in the Last 7 years.
But now i Will never forget It.
Me too.
for years... and now I found it.
:"v finally
dude same and now i watching all these cutscenes and im like wtf is even happening lol
one of my absolute favorite games of all time, the cinematics were crazy good quality for its time.
If I lost my whiskey I would go through all of that as well
Word lol 👌
My whiskey died 2 years ago.
Miss him alot
😂🍺
I still have trauma thinking about how hard this first level was
This is the first walkthrough I've COMPLETELY watched and oh my god this game is amazing. Besides the story I mean
Great Game, would be good to see a Remastered Version but I could still live with this classic.
The intro and cutscenes feel like the start of a classic 80's adventure movie!
I believe it's a book but I'm surprised it's never been made into a movie. Would've fit in well for one of those 90s films
One of the reasons I still have my ps3, so I can still play this game. Ah sweet childhood memories. Damn video games where much more brutal and specially way more creative back then. (except you, modern mortal combat, you are still doing fine)
I played this game when i was a kid a long time ago, the i bought a controller so installed the epsxe emulator to my phone. Then this game, xena, toy story and a bug's life is the first games that comes to my mind. But i forgot the title of this game so i searched to google "ps1 game that is 2d and you're playing as a kid with an electric gun" and now i know the title of this game, part of my childhood
I agree
This and ‘Abes Odyssey’ had a reputation for being pretty brutal back in the day
We used to play this in primary school during free time, everyone chickened out, me too😂
Good times.
One of the best games ever, i've had so much fun with this in the 90's..
This was waaay ahead it's time, we need more games like this nowadays.. The intro, and all the animations.. It was mindblowing back then:)
My PC can't really handle these "high quality" in-game videos in those times, so i watched all of it over and over, cause of freezing, but i didn't care:D
And the sounds.. still give me shivers after 20 years :o
This was a masterpiece! Thanks for the great memories!
good times...
My first Ps1 game!!! 😭
Same haha
I played it on pc
"That's one hell of a game to start with!"
You can play it on phone the emulator name is EPSXE
1998 great year at least go me.
It's amazing to look at the comments and see everyone with exactly the same nostalgia as me finding this game again by searching what the game was about cos they couldn't remember the name what a fucking game this was stuck with me forever
Thank you for the upload. I played this when I was a boy. Couldnt remember the name, just small pieces of the cut scenes. Cant even explain the flood of emotions flowing through me right now. I definitely think its time to grab a copy and finally finish the game that has been stuck in my head for years.
What an amazing game! I was too scared to touch this game as a child. To think I would come across it again after all these years...
I remember how scared I got at 13:40 playing this as a kid.
I've been looking for this game for more than 20 years!! 😭😭
I can't believe I finally found it and accidentally. Thank you Lord 😂😍😍
This boy must have really loved his dog..
thanks for the trip down memory lane tho, never got to finish this game as i found it incredibly hard and i was a lil fart nugget but found it amazing to see how it did end.
The underwater portion of this gave me so much anxiety as a kid.... Plus the death animation a were too cruel and unforgiving to see 😨
Man did I get the craziest nostalgia watching this! Can’t say it was good memories though because this game stressed the hell out of me as a kid
Wow my childhood has returned. The graphics for this time was pretty cool.
Omg this was the game, so many good memories 😭
Who else thought the dark lord was gonna be the teacher? I mean locking a kid in the cupboard is a pretty evil thing to do!
This game should come to the switch asap!
Nope
Yes
