ULTIMATE hack to seat tubeless tyre with track pump at home

- Seating a tubeless tyre can be a real pain. This is by far the best way ive ever come across and its worked for me every single time with no fuss. You only need sellotape and a track pump. Honestly once you know this youll do it every time because it takes maybe 60 seconds to wrap it around a few times.
Feel free to say thanks in the comments if you use this and it works for you.

@TheWattLife have to be honest I was a wee bit unsure if this would work... and glad to be proved wrong. How simple but how effective. I've spent a long time seating tyres , but this is a top hack! Thank you so much. First time worked a charm.
YESSSS!! Glad it worked for you. I spent a good few hours last weekend trying to seat a tyre. Then this worked first time
Same principle, but I’ve used a luggage strap cinched around the tyre, for the same effect. Reusable and no having to find the end of the sellotape 🙂
I tried it with a ratchet strap but the sellotape took about a minute to put on and worked even better as no chance to scuff the rims. Blown away by how easy it was to seat after trying it
Ratchet strap is what I use (and reuse) . No waste
Great hack 👌
@@nigelbradley613 Same. Saw it on a video earlier this year and it works perfectly
If using tape, just bunch up the end a bit, don’t tape it down.. peel right off.
I'm definitely going to try this!
This only convinced me even more - if possible - to never go tubeless😄
HAHAHA I feel you. BUT this has made it easier for me to be tubeless… just slightly
If I have trouble getting new tyres to seal I put an inner tube in pump it up until the tyre seats then ease one side of the tyre off and remove inner tube replace valve and that usually fixes it
What an arse about
@@harrybbbb yes it is but only when all else fails
The good news is- now you can just use sellotape and if it doesn’t work, I’ll come do the tube thing for you
@@thewattlife I set up six wheels yesterday morning. Took me about an hour for the lot. Two road wheel sets and one gravel set. No bother at all. A few years ago it was a nightmare. It’s a learning process and tubeless technology has come on in leaps and bounds.
just last week a sprayed my living room with sealant 😅......I will definitely try this next time
But the tape has to be wide enough to attach to the rim?..What size tire were you using?..A 28 or 30mm might be more difficult to tape down?
It doesn’t have to reach the rim the important bit is that it stops the tyre inflating vertically and forces the tyre onto the seat.
These were 28cc on a 21m internal wheel
I was just going to buy a new pump. Thanks for the post
I was on the cusp of getting a Cham et pump but after it didn’t work for me the other day I was forced to find another solution. Evola.
Now that is a VERY clever idea. I hate the one road tubeless set up I have, to the point I don’t use it.
I've done the same thing with a ratchet strap. It is a technique used by Jeep drivers to reseat a bead if a tire pops off the rim on the trail. I think tape is easier though and I'll probably switch it up next time I seat a tire
brilliant, great hack
Works a treat
Great hack for those troublesome tyres! Thx! I've found a tyre now, that works for me with my rims so just use them. Conti STR's are so much easier to seat with just a track pump than even their now defunct TL cousins. Which always needed a booster pump and sometimes a couple of goes.
Thats a neat trick! I'll definitely keep this in my back pocket next time I attempt this! From what I've read, not all tyre/rim combos will hold pressure without sealant in there, so perhaps you could just check the bead is evenly seated all round and you're good to whack some sealant in? Not sure if tolerances are better now though.
interesting! I use TPU tubes for everything under 32mm.
Pathetic
I have a TPU in my saddle bag for emergencies
I must admit, that is a great hack. I've seen a lot of them and I think this one takes the cake as far as effectiveness goes.
But what about a hack to easily mount that tire? 😊
giving this a go later on with my vittorria corsa pro, cant get the rear one to seat at all. fingers crossed
This is exactly the test that we need- let me know how you get on
nice one, will try when i burst my tube xD
Would that work for MTB tires (50mm) on a 29mm rim?
I've seen similar (maybe from Syd Fixes Bikes? but can't remember for sure) using a ratcheting strap instead of tape. Also available at hardware stores. Should achieve the same thing with less disposable waste.
I used a ratchet strap prior to trying sellotape. Works just as well, slightly less cost effective but yes more environmentally friendly. Thanks for sharing
I use a ratchet strap.
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 Cool. Ever tried with a handpump?
I haven’t tried yet- BUT I’m actually pretty sure I could have done it with a hand pump BUT I don’t think it would get up to 70psi to finish seating it. So it would be rideable just not completely seated
Does it work with gravel tires?
I would imagine the tape might not be wide enough.
yes it does, you can also use a lashing strap
Genius... maybe I return the air shot now! 🤣
naaa you better keep it 😉
@@crack0n LOL I’ll find out shortly… about to mount some gravel kings onto my Megas 😅
@@DontGetDroppedCycling I use the schwalbe air booster with success for a couple of years
That’s a tidy combo you’re going for there Erik @dontgetdroppedcycling
Would a ratchet strap work? Saves the waste too!
Just need a few extra things and can take a bit longer to set up but yes- hopefully same result.
Yes it does, I've been doing it for years. While I use cam buckle straps (not so bulky/heavy when bikepacking) the principle and effect is the same.
Smart! A bit unfortunate that it creates plastic waste like that, but if it works, it works...
Yes I do agree, and once you understand the principle of it you can use straps/belts etc and if you’re seating loads of tyres you can find a more environmentally friendly method with the same principle in mind. .
Just use an air compressor, even a cheap one, works 100% of the time everytime and only takes seconds. Dont use fairy washing up liquid on tyres as it can degrade the rubber!!
I tried using a compressor pump and it didn’t work. Three times. This worked first time and I didn’t have to leave the house. I don’t think everyone has an air compressor lying around which is why this is a bit of a hack to get the job done
@@thewattlife good hack in all fairness 👍
no fuss? just get a compressor
I get that it works- but it costs a lot more and doesn’t work everytime
Get to the point but then waffle. If you have those tires / wheels, can’t you afford a better pump.
Sorry my man- it’s why it’s time stamped.
It’s the fact that a roll of tape is £2 and a chamber pump is £65. Plus the tape works every time. Hence why it’s a hack. Give it a try next time or perhaps a mate might one day not have a pump and you’ll then know what to tell him to do
I laugh at all this videos. You guys go to the EXTREMES and yet fail to do one basic thing. After you finish mounting the tire, check that the tire is seating AROUND the valve and not on top. Use a leaver and move it till the tire on both sides is around the valve and then just pump and it seals in seconds.
Thanks me later ;)
Thats obvious, of course the valve has to be inside the tire. but have you tried challenge tires? Or Tufo, or first tubless trys by vittoria, or anyhting on a mavic rim? No? I did, and this hack served me for years now, if nothing else works.
I had Yksions on my Mavic Ksyrium USTs that would seat immediately. I replaced one recently by Hutchinson Blackbird but it would not seat at all until I seated a small part around the valve with a lever. I had zero confidence that would fix it but it was very easy and did the trick.
Errrmmmm… watch my wheel review video for $991 wheels. We literally try to seat a tyre after having done that 3x with a compressor pump. It didn’t work.
This worked first time
Just use Schwalbe or Goodyear tyres and you’ll never have a tubeless problem again. But I guess top quality tyres can’t be trendy as well
Trendy tyres come with their own downside I guess
