I liked Revolver fine but this notion is insidious. It's just a method of telling people to let themselves be abused.
Yes, that dude murdering your family is your enemy. You don't feel sad or angry because some separate part of your soul tricked you into feeling that way. And you aren't ascended to another plane by ignoring it and allowing it to continue.

you know every time you feel humiliated? or angry? or scared? that is basically your ego, and if you can learn to let them feelings go when they arise, then you will live a far more pure life. thats the how i interpreted the film. "embrace the pain, and you will win this game"

I clearly remember the moment when I suddenly understood the movie. What a massive shock!
I had tried to watch the movie several times but, for whatever reason, I had never finished watching it. Then, one late afternoon, I watched the movie until the credits, until these interviews.
The shockwave hit me down to the core of my soul. I spent more than 10 minutes motionless, with my jaw down, going through a deep existential revelation. It was quite a nice feeling. Every social actions that I had taken, every conflict, every dispute, all forms of anger, all acts of revenge. It was all a con due to a complete lack of self-awareness. Nothing had been done for myself. It was all done, solely, to feed the ego.
It is amazing how much damage one can do to oneself, as well as to others, because of a simple mechanism acting on our minds left unchecked.
The ego is certainly not a complex concept once understood. It definetly played a great part in the successful evolution of our species. But now that we are industrialized, revolutionized, globalized, what use does it have?! It only makes us behave as if we are still in the jungle, climbing stairs instead of trees, seeking the highest spot at all cost, with no benefit to oneself or everyone else.
Guy Ritchie did a masterpiece. A fusion between action and philosophy which, apart from Fight Club, there isn't much else worth watching.
The fact that it was a financial failure proves to me its philosophical success. For those of us who understood it and were thus changed by it, Guy Ritchie would agree, I think, that it was well worth it.

The film Revolver, is about conquering one's EGO. Each of us are possessed by EGO to different extents - most of us are unaware of this. The film reflects our ego behavior with that of the characters for eg. Macha and Paul. Macha wants to impress Sam Gold, and the extent he goes to do this, reflects our own behavior at times.. For what does Macha do this - to build a relationship with someone powerful, to show how powerful and cool he is and to create an identity for himself, for survival. Zach and Avi help Mr.Green, get in touch with and finally conquer his Ego. "Our Enemy is the our own inner perception, our ignorance, our Ego". What are we ignorant of? The fact that Ego is possessing us, hiding within itself, making us believe it's thought and feelings are our own thoughts and feelings. Thank you Guy Ricthie for putting together this film so well!

I'm sorry, but this thought process is insidious. There are people who wish to hurt you. You have a right to be concerned for the lives and health of you and your family. Anyone telling you otherwise (or subtly implying) is not your friend. This sounds like the type of thing a cult leader tells their followers.
"Let go of your resources.. they only serve to cause you pain. Give them to me. Oh and btw, you only want to keep your jewelry, house, money and the monogamous nature of your spouse because your EGO tells you to. You wouldn't want to live your whole life serving something so lowly as an EGO, right?"

ego more or less is the attachment to a previous "good" situation like imprisoning. You have to imagine what yourself would do in that past situation when "yourself" was thinking correct to decide what reality is now. This ex-self is supposed to be the ego. Like trying to not change yourself from what you felt you are in a good period. The point is, that only if you are open to changes you will stay the same. There are millions of ways to describe ego but finally the feeling of it is one.

@gavinlawlor93 - Gavin, the ego is the incessant chatter of your mind that simultaneous thinks that it's a distinct and separate entity but at the same time is extremely paranoid that it doesn't exist. Very few people even have the mental awareness to know that that they are not their thoughts.

The ego`s best trick is " distraction". The perception of external enemy or imaginary treaths is maby the worst form of distraction. Humans natural state is a form of narcissism, where the ego can blame the world and others for the consekvenses of short term gratification and indulgence is ilusjons/entertainment/distraction.
That is there are real threats out there. But 98% of our problems come from our own actions and reactions. Trauma and ptsd make people be in a constant state of " fight, flight, freeze, frawn" even when there is no danger. The mind creats them on it`s own!

Close your eyes, and think of something random. That which can witness or observe that random thought in your mind is who "You" really are. You can call it your soul, higher self, Atman, Spirit, God, etc. It is not your ego. The ego cannot witness or observe thought. It can only be witnessed or observed.

If the above 1.4 min is too long for ya...
GPT4: The passage highlights the role of the ego as a "confidence trickster" that disguises itself within our own thoughts and feelings. The ego is described as the biggest con, with people being unaware of its existence and the ways it can manipulate and control their actions. It is suggested that people will go to great lengths to protect their ego boundaries, including lying, cheating, stealing, and killing.
The passage also explores the idea that the ego creates an imaginary external enemy, which becomes a projection of the ego itself. In this sense, all external enemies are of our own creation. The greatest enemy, therefore, is our own inner perception, ignorance, and ego.
These insights align with the themes explored in the movie Revolver, which explores the concept of the ego and its role in creating illusions and distortions of reality. The film suggests that the ego is a form of self-imposed imprisonment that limits our ability to see the truth and connect with others. The protagonist of the film goes on a journey to understand the nature of the ego and learn how to transcend it, ultimately freeing himself from its hold.
Overall, the passage and the film offer a critique of the ego and the ways it can limit our potential and distort our perceptions of reality. They suggest that by recognizing the existence of the ego and learning how to transcend it, we can gain greater insight and connection with others and the world around us.

"They are infinitely more efficient and organized than that. In order to keep us obedient and meek and weak, the predators engaged themselves in a stupendous manoeuvre stupendous, of course, from the point of view of a fighting strategist. A horrendous manoeuvre from the point of view of those who suffer it. They gave us their mind! Do you hear me? The predators give us their mind, which becomes our mind. The predators' mind is baroque, contradictory, morose, filled with the fear of being discovered any minute now."

I'm not sure Ego destruction is possible, or a good idea if it is.
According to Freud's theory, the psyche is divided into the ID, the Ego, and the Superego.
In general, the ID produces instinctual responses and desires, and in general the Superego creates fantastical or ambitious thought.
In the middle is the Ego, which takes a combination of instinct and higher level thinking to create a "personality" that is who you are.
If the Ego was removed from the equation, then what exactly would inhibit or control your base desires or manic fantasies? You'd become a psychopath.
Alternatively, the Ego could be a persistent frame that cannot be removed, your mind might always create a new Ego, if you meditate or perform exercises or do whatever you think it takes to get rid of your Ego, how do you know when it's gone? What's to say that this "Real you" that you've uncovered isn't a second Ego that your own brain created?
Let's simplify this in an example:
Jake Green's Ego is afraid of elevators, so he goes in an elevator and after a long argument rids himself of his Ego, does his internal narration stop? No, so for all he knows his mind has resolved the conflict by creating another "Ego", one that isn't afraid of elevators or anything that he used to be frightened of.

What is the point of ego? Why does it exist? Is it a necessary component that should be kept 'in check' if possible or should it be removed completely?
Does the ego exist as a system that kept us alive in the past when we were not the dominant species when the danger was real and easily perceivable (predators) and is now working against us because we haven't catch up to the fact there are no more natural enemies?

@Theninjasarecoming There is True Self and then there is Ego Self.
True Self is the self that, even though you might hate someone at work, you still respect them and can learn from them and work with them. Ego Self would be the self that does petty things to harm the other person simply because you do not like them. It is acting selfishly. True Self would act _selflessly_ and not hurt others.

Its not a documentary (thats why it had so much attention). Its a movie, and on the script or film, nobody is giving the idea of annihilating the ego. The film is all about the implications that humans can provok when they deeply invest in d action of being aware of the ego's existence. but of course, being a movie, the limits had been shorten. although your were wrong about the movie, its good you being right about the possibility of annihilating the ego. still. Where does this will lead us?!

@colloredbrothers I think that's your ego talking. The ego is the one that says you need drugs to experience those kind of feelings in your life.
    But that's just me, peace

this way your decisions are made by a conscious model of yourself and not from you really. You take everything to your conscious and your unconscious is almost lost. Then you are feeling you are not existing. The good thing is that you are always existing, you just have to be attached to that and not your ex-self.Anyhow, you are trying to remember your ex-self by words and words cannot describe fully a human. So you are really attached to something different than you, that is not even existing

I see a lot of PHDs talking here, so I guess they know what they are talking about. But this went right over my head.
I have a great many enemies, and they are real and they are not me. If I fail to protect myself, they do get me. This is not ego. This is the real world.
What world do these people live in?

    • @ponder2006
      @ponder2006 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

It is hard to believe you have "great many enemies" as you say. If you consider a population facing genocide right now in Africa, Syria or somewhere on earth, those people have actual fears and it is not the ego. If you are in such situation then i am sorry, you should act accordingly and try to get out of the madness. What is being discussed here is the cause of the insanity to begin with. Why is there genocide, shooting, and killing to begin with? IT IS THE EGO. If you are scared of people because you are worried they might hurt you because of what you have done to them in the past then become aware of that and apologize or do what you need to do to solve the problem. If you think you don't have to apologize or make peace with someone you have wronged or not, then that is the EGO keeping you in perpetual fear, anger, shame, loneliness and sadness. Watch the movie REVOLVER and FIGHT CLUB. Do not try to understand it intellectually that is where the EGO lives, you will not succeed. Just observe your thinking and emotions ask yourself why you are feeling or thinking in a certain way. Just notice it. Once you kill the EGO, you will have become a Jedi Master.

    • @dmosier
      @dmosier 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

ponder2006 "Why is there genocide, shooting, and killing to begin with? IT IS THE EGO"
Actually in most of the situations you described the cause is religion. And that is not Ego. It is invisible, imaginary fantasy that people are deluded into thinking is real. Nothing to do with Ego. Try again.
And if you think the only way to have an enemy is to have wronged someone and failed to apologize, then you need to get out into the real world. Example the woman in India that was gang raped on the bus while going home from work. She wronged no-one, the attack was not a retaliation. Those attackers were her enemy. She was not able to protect herself. They got her. She is dead. See how that worked? No Ego-psyco-bable-bullshit needed. Some humans are predators.
And asking me to "not try to understand it intellectually" is nonsense. That way of thinking deconstructs itself as fast as you can state it. POOF! It's gone.

    • @ponder2006
      @ponder2006 10 ปีที่แล้ว +7

That's my point. You are trying to make reason of it. You mentioned "religion" These people have "ideology" two different things and yet they disguise it as religion. Ideology is a an idea, a belief and they use religion to justify their actions. They can believe in any fairy-tale they want, that is not the problem. The problem is they have so much hate for each other that they will destroy themselves for no reason if nobody is watching, religion is just the excuse for it, so they talk about their religion to justify their actions.
I will not try to explain why people commit rape or the psychology behind it. There is so much written about it. But there is a root cause, which created the EGO in the first place. You can generalize and call these people "predators" but it really means nothing more than a simple name calling. Until you understand the root cause labels don't mean anything just like "the war on terror", "the war on drugs", "the war on poverty"...will not really work.
I am sure you still have many questions like I did when I first read somebooks about this. But it is something you need to experience without thinking because your EGO is watching your thoughts so you are pretty much screwed if you try to reason with it.
Just monitor your thoughts for a while as if you are watching a movie. Just keep watching. That may be enough. If you immediately think this is stupid or come up with reason why it is stupid, then that is the ego making you believe he knows better because he is your best friend. Your job is to try now and understand it now before it is too late. I suggest you rewatch Fight Club or Revolver, and also read books by Eckhart Tolle. But remember it is only an option, you can go on your way and you will not lose anything. The promise here is you can do much much better in all parts of your life.

If all people stay as loving and egoless as they when they are born , none of this would happen , that's because they're born , innocent , beautiful & perfect.
but you've got people deluded into thinking that collecting wealth , taking land , seeking love outside of themselves , or temporary pleasure or the so called success to be their heaven when it's exactly the opposite , and everyone is fighting for their own piece of hell thinking that it's heaven .
so what happened , simply human beings born perfect , took all the rotten animal qualities from their parents instilled into them by a sick society saying that this is not sick , this is normal , and somehow people now are so surprised that people have become predators , it's not because it's their inherent nature , it's because they've accepted these qualities as strength when it's weakness .
You've got so many enemies and you're proud of it , but that's the very same reason , you've got no peace of mind , you're angry all the time , you're depressed and you feel so helpless that you won't show it , you will act like you are having peace of mind and that you're perfect in this way , which is exactly what's keeping you where you are , in Mental hell , and not surprisingly almost the majority of society does the exact same thing, this is why you see the hell that you so despise .
Get rid of all the bullshit inside your head , throw the garbage and be receptive to change and truth when it comes your way , because if your way of thinking actually worked for you all your life so far , you wouldn't have lead the sad life you currently have , which your parents and the people before you had as well , stop trying to act that you're happy when you're depressed , only when you're honest can you go anywhere from where you are now .
      Love :) .

Ahmed Saladin "You've got so many enemies and you're proud of it "
      False.
I do have enemies, and I do not like it, I am not 'proud' of it, at all. This statement you made is just as wrong as telling a cancer patient that they are happy to have cancer.
      "you're angry all the time"...
False. And I have no idea how you could even try to say something like that about someone who you do not know.
"you're depressed and you feel so helpless that you won't show it "
Wrong again. Where did you get this from?
"you will act like you are having peace of mind and that you're perfect in this way "
No I do not. I am far from perfect, and I know it. I seek to improve in every way.
"Mental hell , and not surprisingly almost the majority of society does the exact same thing, this is why you see the hell that you so despise ."
Uh...this sentence does not make sense. You do not make sense.
And your entire last paragraph is such a meaningless 'word-salad' that for it, I have no cogent response.
look...they made a statement, they said that the only enemies one can have are just inside one's own head...and I disagree with that statement, because it is demonstrably false. That is all.
      Peace.

Because the ego needs to prove others wrong and itself right imo. Giving you a false sense of superiority. Viewing 1 situation from 2 different minds or perspectives would probably have 2 different outcomes about the meaning of the situation. Even though they have different outcomes, they would both be right & wrong, just depends on how you choose to view the situation.

  • @lodidodi69
    @lodidodi69 12 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Ego (n.) - Self, or the identification of Self.
If we can remove the identification of self (ego), we won't exist as a single entity anymore. We become the universe and thusly God. Ego death is the only path to Godhood. This is probably the hardest thing to do, as even now it is impossible for me to believe that there is no I am. Just us as a universe experiencing ourselves subjectively.

A lion is not an enemy in the sense of the word. A Lion cannot conspire against you - cannot plot against you. A lion is no more your enemy than an earthquake is your enemy, or a falling tree limb is your enemy. It is a threat, it is a danger, ir is deadly, and potentially mortal, but it is not an enemy.
