The absolute BEST female group, second to NONE! All Beautiful and more importantly, they ALL could sing. I’ll never understand why they didn’t blow up. IMO, there’s no group past or present who surpassed these ladies.
I dont even think they are the same. EnVogue had four lead singers who could blow shit down, sing better live and their harmonies were crazy. Destiny's Child was pretty much just "beyonce and them". 😂
I love the fact that they were all great vocalists, they were all gorgeous....no one was being pushed as the lead or "the most loved by the public". They were all stars. 🤩
Fantastic video!!!! They're literally one of the greatest vocal groups male or female of all time. Their fallout really hurts my heart cause these ladies are the soundtrack to my youth. Foster and Mac and Sylvia Rhone did a helluva number on this group. It's too bad that the divide and conquer was effective. Great job chronicling this amazing group! Subscribed!!
Tommy and Denny probably owned that. Cindy and Terry likely didnt feel they had to fight for it until Dawn and Maxine started using it too. This was never an issue prior to this.
Why would they own it? They auditioned for the band which already had the name copyrighted by the men who set everything up. They were performers filling a role in the end.
I remember where I was when their first song hit the airwaves. Somebody on the bus yelled for everyone to turn our little radios (no cell phones then) on. LOL / all talent
If they want to make some big bucks its gonna HAVE to be the original four. However, the new argument is that Rhona has been a member of Envogue longer than Dawn and Maxine at this point.
I agree with Dawn and Maxine about the money. They used to sell cd's for $15 - $20 in the store and the artists only getting 2 cents or the smallest percent of that for all the work they put in is absolutely ridiculous. On the other side, I agree with Cindy and Teri on the name because Dawn and Maxine trying to start another group using the same name and touring and booking shows and putting out songs as 'En Vogue part 2' or whatever is just confusing for the fans, promoters, radio stations, etc. They should've known using the name En Vogue was gonna be a problem. Call your new group something else bruh, that's confusing.
I completely understand why Dawn spoke out and I would’ve too, but I also understand why Terry and Cindy didn’t want to cause an issue since so many artist and groups got blackballed for speaking out against record labels back then.
I get what Dawn is saying for the most part but you dont have to sabotage EVERYTHING. The way she dealt with it was beneficial to NO ONE. There was a better way.

I've read loads of biographies by people in the music industry and entertainers usually get a few pennies from the album sales because that money goes to the record company. Entertainers get their money from touring and live performances. Its just how they divvy the money up.
@@ceeceetracey9839 that’s definitely not entirely true. It depends on your contract with the record label and management. Sometimes management gets a huge % of your tour money. Artists have to pay for every expense on the tour and end up left with nothing.
@@ceeceetracey9839 It depends on what you signed. Many are left with nothing which is why some file for bankruptcy. Sometimes the lawyer negotiating the deal works for the artist and the record company and/or manager (conflict of interest).
I have always loved En Vogue from the first time I heard their blended voices and beautiful looks. I carried their music all over the world while I was in the military. Their harmony was exceptional and every last one of them could sing lead. Growing up in that era the music was simply breath taking that would immediately put you in an upbeat mood. Even the white groups played with alot of funk and soul. Those were great times and I still listen to that era music today.

What irks me about this is that shit has been going on for decades now. All those years in between there has been no resolve and nothing consistent in regards to working things out. I've been hangin around, dedicated and thirsty this whole time.
It’s kinda nice that they didn’t breakup b/c of attitudes, it was legit contractual. But, it’s still sad that only 2 felt the group, as a whole, deserved so much more than what they was given. I wonder if they all banned together about the contract issues, would things have turned out differently 🤔
Same thing with TLC but fortunately they filed bankruptcy to get out of the contract and renegotiate their contract. It’s unfortunate that soon after Lisa died in a car accident but the group is still going strong today selling out concerts despite TBOZ fighting through sickle cell and brain tumor being removed successfully.
They needed their OWN music attorney in the office when discussing their contracts with the record company. The attorney in the room was not working in their best interest, but the record company's best interest. This story Is ageless in the pop music business. @Michelle Rodriquez I used to take saxophone lessons from the jazz musician Charles Davis in the late 1980s and early 90s. He passed in 2016. He was a sideman in one of Billie's bands in the late 1950s.

He performed with Dinah Washington, John Coltrane, Ray Charles, Nancy Wilson, Abdullah Ibrahim (also known as Dollar Brand) and many more. He performed for ex-president Bill Clinton in 2002. In 1964 he was named Downbeat magazine's top baritone sax player. He was a close friend trumpeter Kenny Dorham. So he was a great instructor.

I have a business Proposition Right now that I'm looking to work with Unsigned Artists/Musicians who are SERIOUS about getting a jump on their Careers and need Legal Representation so Someone can help explain to them what they DON'T KNOW/Understand about Contract renegotiating.
Cyndi and Terry's issue was they werent really about sisterhood in the sense of making sure that the other girls were taken care of! when it came time to renegotiate the contract they sided with the label. Mind you Terry is in a relationship with the producer so she had access to the money even though dawn and Maxine were broke. Cyndi treated the group like a hobby because she was married to someone in the MBL I dont blame dawn for leaving the way they handled business is trash !
Glenn Braggs ,MLB player is her Hubby.
Glenn Braggs was a Major League Baseball player
@@rissaceehart4076 yes so thats why Cindy wasn't worry about money she had get husband to take care of her. And Terry had the producer she was dating at that time. The only thing the other 2 girls wanted was just to get paid that's all love for them to get back together I really do the album because the album they have out now with the 3 not that good.
@James Gray The trouble is they do hire lawyers that are 'suggested' by the label because the artists and their 'management' have no clue!
There is a lot of self-interested back scratching amongst the people that are supposed to have the artists interests as priority but don't. The artists are just cash cows for everyone in the circle.
@James Gray They also do not READ their contracts. And some of the black artists are ROBBED BY THEIR OWN PEOPLE.
The first time I heard "Hold on" in the Summer of 1990, I got the Cassette, those first two albums were great!
Hold On is still the jam.
Dawn’s beauty still gives me chills.
Yeah Dawn was absolutely beautiful
Still my crush to this day
She's not that beautiful
@@terrancemaloney29 If you think she isn’t beautiful, may be more into the RuPaul LaVerne Cox type. Whatever floats your boat. Who am I to judge? 🤷
En Vogue has something so special 😢 those voices and looks omg!
$0.02 per album. That sounds like theft especially after they became huge. Their first release was huge. Crazy how many young people in that business are taken advantage of because they don't understand their contracts. And they are being screwed over by their own.
The girls should have had a conference call with TLC.....
The absolute BEST female group, second to NONE! All Beautiful and more importantly, they ALL could sing. I’ll never understand why they didn’t blow up. IMO, there’s no group past or present who surpassed these ladies.
They did blow up but behind the scenes problems got in the way. And everyone won’t be on top for ever

Nah. I say they are up there with The Jones Girls and The Emotions.
It's really tragic how such an awesome group fell apart.
Before Destinys Child there was En Vogue!!
I dont even think they are the same. EnVogue had four lead singers who could blow shit down, sing better live and their harmonies were crazy. Destiny's Child was pretty much just "beyonce and them". 😂

Idk, brownstone was equally as good. IMO.
I love the fact that they were all great vocalists, they were all gorgeous....no one was being pushed as the lead or "the most loved by the public". They were all stars. 🤩
Dawn has a pretty speaking voice.
But man, EnVouge was EVERYTHING! I remember my friends and me pretending to be them. Good times.
This was literally slavery. If you don’t understand the business of music, you won’t make it in the music business.
I love these small documentaries please keep them coming!
That’s really sad, dawn is being so reasonable.
In my opinion Envogue is the GOAT.But what piss me off is how some of these producers lawyers managers etc just rip off the artists.
It's like I'll make you famous if you make me rich hell to the nah
They were:
Classy, Pretty, & Talented...Oh & They Kept their clothes ON!!
They sued the members about the name but not the labels for more compensating pay my goodness. Great video
So Dawn & Maxine didn't even own the En Vogue trademark w/ Cindy & Terry?!? 👀🙊🤔
Right, that crazy to me. I would sue to be co-owner of the name.
Agreed
Which could be why they never took Dawn and Maxine side 🤔🤔
Tommy and Denny probably owned that. Cindy and Terry likely didnt feel they had to fight for it until Dawn and Maxine started using it too. This was never an issue prior to this.
Why would they own it?
They auditioned for the band which already had the name copyrighted by the men who set everything up. They were performers filling a role in the end.
If all four don't group back up , they won't be the same , just saying 🤫
90s R&B was the best. Especially girl groups. Funky Divas was one of the best tapes released in 92. I was 11 lol.
Absolutely 👍
The music is different these days. They can make good music but this generation would not be able appreciate it
Exactly.. cause being a Jezebel and a baby momma is what's hot these days.. not being classy
Well if EnVogue got back together and made new music it would be for their fans. Not for teenagers.

Love Maxine Jones voice
Absolutely. Maxine and Dawn rounded out their sound. The 4 together were magic
I remember where I was when their first song hit the airwaves. Somebody on the bus yelled for everyone to turn our little radios (no cell phones then) on. LOL / all talent
Me tooooooo!!! My cousin and I used to sing and dance to their first TAPE! Pure talent and beauty ❤️

Too bad that business divides a gift..... African AMERICANS....know your business instead of getting into others business. Love and clearly ♥️🔄

@@PopCultureCarnivore1 please stop. This is not the place for that reductive argument.
Well said brother! 💕✊🏾
I am all about the original 4. They came out when I was in high school. Even with the new singer it's not the same or as good.
One of the best female groups with beautiful vocals they need a documentary and movie.
Pointer sisters best
I miss that group of girls. 💔

@@JLPerryTV Terry and Denny were still together in 1999 and she sang background as a favor for Frank Gatson.
@@RP.123 that's crazy. So where does the artists money come from?
If dawn had more questions, she should have just brought her own personal paid, attorney with her who understood the language and was paid to act in her best interest. Without years and years of experience there is no way to understand all the language

2 cents to a record was the going rate for most artists back then. The money is in touring
They needed their OWN music attorney in the office when discussing their contracts with the record company. The attorney in the room was not working in their best interest, but the record company's best interest. This story Is ageless in the pop music business. @Michelle Rodriquez he didnt have any stories. I'm sure if I had asked he would have. He was an in demand sideman, particular for the baritone sax.
