I thought the funniest thing I saw him do was when Ben Afleck hosted and Fred played this mentally handicapped man on the set of the movie Gigli. In between takes he says to Ben, "Ben! Ben!. This movie isn't gonna do too good". Roflol
Fred is a quiet genius. Documentary Now is pure gold, he’s a great musician, and his comedy range is endless. Dana is a legend and David sounds like he needs to gargle salt water.
FINALLY! A DEVO reference! I saw the doggone podcast was Fly On The Wall with David and Dana and NATURALLY assumed the whole thing would be about DEVO!! Thanks Fred for bringing the damn train to the station.
I love Fred so much. I could listen to him talk drums so day, but also hearing the guys talk about navigating the post-SNL years is fascinating. I can so perfectly picture young David Spade riding a wheelie on his BMX, with a huge badass grin on his face. A 9 year old baller. That bit about Bill Hader's voice is so true. When he said "SPICY!” as Stefan, my little voice teacher brain exploded.
They were talking about Ram and I was instantly thinking “I’m definitely going to play Arrow Through Me” when this is done - and then they brought it up! Such a nerdy moment on my behalf of feeling a special connection with these three great guys and one of my favorite songs. ❤
fred is such a brilliant guy. my fave snl sketch of his is the doorman with bill hader with jamie foxx. they knew it was doomed from the start, but kept going. the moment he started laughing, it had me in tears. i mustve rewatched that one like 100 times by now.
*Eastside Low Bottoms sh*t !* _Tappin' in from South Central LA_ I think Fred is one of my favorites on the show. Ferrecito, Nick Fehn on Update - a bit I always revisit from time to time. One of Fred's funniest 'breaking" sketches was he and Bill Hader playing doormen w/Jamie Foxx and Fred telling the kid the story of Christmas - Fred wiping away tears but trying to stay in character. Freakin' hilarious !!
I love the Californians. I didn’t grow up in CA but have live there for 37 years and that sing song pattern of talking is real. I was in Beverly Hills having lunch one day at this little deli and this young man and woman came in and sat next to me and I heard them talking and it was so hard not to laugh cuz everything they said and how they talked was like an episode of the Californians. I hope they weren’t offended. But it was just like a comic sketch.
I’m so happy I found (was postentially led to through the algorithm) your guys’s podcast. The detail of the behind the scenes is very addicting. I never even watched snl besides some of the popular skits (like the Californians).
John Bonham's Secrets: 1. He was born with Perfect Pitch (nobody else has picked up on this). This means he knew how to tune his drums perfectly so they resonated with each other in a perfectly intonated chord. 2. His drums were the biggest kit he could find -- I don't mean MORE DRUMS, I mean each drum was bigger than what most people played. 3. Jimmy Page... people didn't record drums the way he did. He used more mics and placed them all over the room to get a fuller sound. 4. He sometimes recorded in a "Crow's Nest" perched above the band. 5. He hit really hard without trying due to having been a carpenter, so it looks like he's not hitting that hard.
There's few moments in TV where I wonder who is going to be playing Uncle Fester in Wednesday - one of my favourite characters that remind me of my family (R.I.P. Uncle Leonard). I know google exists but sometimes you just trust the brains putting a show together to deliver. Then Fred shows up and I couldn't have been more pleased. Also he nails the character. Bravo!
Fred . So funny . The Californians . And everything else . I saw a lot of cool bands but like 89 I think , I took this girl to the violent femmes and the drummer was unbelievable , he was set up like the high school band and he was kinda chubby and on his feet the whole set . When I wasn’t even in school yet I had a little Disney record player . Like the fisher price one . Target had 45’s . They were like a buck . My first two 45’s I bought was oh Mickey You’re so Fine , and Abracadabra Steve Miller LOL
I really enjoy this fun podcast! Liked all the the drum talk, even though I'm not a drummer. David and Dana have such good chemistry. Fred is an interesting and unique soul!
Spade and Carvey staked their careers on being funny. Armisen could always just say - “hey, I’m a musician playing at being funny.” great out to keep the pressure at bay
Concerning the later part of the Pcast when Fred mentions McCartneys Ram album as his all time fav. Great album. They state he hardly plays any songs from Ram live. Ram has Too Many People, Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey, and Monkberry Moon Delight, which were in heavy live rotation for most of Wings. If you love Ram as well, check out deluxe Ed bonus track Hey Diddle, if you haven’t heard it gold awaits. How it didn’t make the cut is probably strictly time on vinyl limitations. Ⓜ️

I’d seen SNL , when I was a kid horror movies came on sat nights so if I was home , but as a teen the music guests drew me , and in middle school every Monday morning you could hear the churchladies throughout the halls of my school . One week the sugarcubes were the guest and that episode was so epic , I taped it . I don’t remember what the churchlady said but the penis song . That whole sketch was amazing . I was hooked . It was so much fun . That was the time I was watching from Dana , thru david , and into Fred , most weeks not every every week but most weeks . Thank you . Also massive head wound Harry .
I just LOVE the whole generous and appreciative vibe from David, Dana and every and any guest thats been on this podcast. Its like DANG, why cant people who aren't funny be this effin nice??? I mean, its gotta suck to not be funny so, i guess I can understand the shit vibe 🤔 Anyway, i love comedians and i love the energy on this podcast. I cannot believe Phil Hartman wrote for “Peewee’s Big Adventure”. And just now I see that it was Tim Burton’s directorial debut! 🤯. I absolutely loved that movie when I was growing up.
Loved art student song on Seth Myers. Brilliant, the lyrics are so true. Does Me. Hader really play the bass? I took drum lessons on a kit. Planning on getting back to it. Been going to Chicago’s shows since 1984. My brother n law, Pat Samson was the drummer for U.S. Maple. They had a great run in the ‘90’s. I’ve known those guys since we were punk kids. They went on to have representation by Drag City. Toured Europe. Had a big following in Germany. Todd Ritman had the privilege playing with Rhys Chapman when he played at the Empty Bottle. That lot are funny as fuck. Real eccentric and jokers. I love them
I had to stop the tape and laugh for a while about Dana's little, "Fred Armisen, get out of town".!! I also liked David's, low, guttural "not a helmet in sight"!!
my favorite toy was a revolver that had bullets to load in the chambers with caps in each cartridge. the bike was a Raleigh 3speed English Racer. the movie was THEM. giant ants that were caused by radioactivity. my favorite record was Rumble by LinkWray.
My favorite guys are Dana carvey and John lovetts but I don't think Dana carvey would disagree with you at all and has actually said as much. I don't think too many people can disagree with that. I'm just glad Saturday night live exists.
I remember at the end of Conquest Of The Planet Of The Apes we were all for the apes because they were being mistreated. Then suddenly I remembered The Planet Of The Apes and realized I had just sold out my race.
I was a laser in school. Chasing being the best. And I got a payed off. But I found I work best in a pressure cooker situation. After school, it was up to me and I wAs unmotivated. I need the back and forth, on my own I’m useless. How do you economize your energy level?
That episode of documentary now! where Fred plays a pretentious abstract artist opposite Cate Blanchet was so funny 🤣. I know close to nothing about those types of artists but I still got every joke. He was such a douchebag 😂
My favorite era was the '80s and early 90s with Dana carvey and really stopped watching Saturday night live a little bit after Adam Sandler era. I enjoy clips from every era of course to include Will Ferrell. But I wish I would have watched full seasons of the era with Fred Armisen and Bill hader and the other army of comedians that were in that cast. It's easy to say everything sucks after your favorite cast era ends, and certainly some episodes and seasons are lame but there's always something funny going on every season.
People throw around 'comedy genius' and it's often misdirected. Mike Myers or Jimmy Fallon were very strong students of comedy, wanted it and made it. Carvey has a funny high-energy revelation power, Spade has a quick wit and finds tangy snark nuggets like no other and Twitter is everyone who tried to copy him. ALL these things are excellent but the odd so often there is a kind of comedy genius but really probably 'autistic' is a better word. Andy Kauffman had it and Fred Armisen has it. Its a peculiar wildcard IQ streak and it shouldn't be thrown around so much. Sometimes I think Bill Hader is a 'daywalker'. He is a 'Mike Myers' comedy fan, student, he does the work to find and make the funny but he may have a 'streak' of that genius. Fred Armisen is, really, most properly a Comedy Genius.
Before I started listening to Fly on the Wall, if someone would have told me how absolutely annoying I would find Carvey, I wouldn’t have believed them.
noone is ever interested i David Spade, but they have to keep him involved because he's there. i feel like his whole life was like that.....getting famous being around other talent......sort of the PDiddy of comedy lol
Fred's was hilarious on SNL. Love Fred.
All three of you dudes are hilarious!
Love Fred. One of the greatest to be on SNL
I like post- SNL Fred even better

His rock comedy jam tour was funny as faaaaak! Thanks you's two s bookoo
Fred played at least one show with Devo.. saw some of the songs here on YT and, he killed it.. amazing band that always has exceptional drummers
Talented Fred Armison

Spade and Carvey staked their careers on being funny. Armisen could always just say - “hey, I’m a musician playing at being funny.” great out to keep the pressure at bay

Yeah Phil and Paul were comedy partners from way way back. Phil played a sea captain on the early Pee Wee special
