To this day, I’ve never seen an actor endowed with the spirit of God portraying Jesus Christ like Rober Powell. What speaks volumes in this incarnation of Jesus is that, Jesus during his three and a half years mission never spoke plainly, but with illustrations and sometimes with riddles as it was written in scriptures as it’s written in the Gospel of John.

You can see the holy spirit is entering Robert Powell and he does not know what it is . He is living the reality and feeling how Jesus felt he is totally over whelmed by the spirit of God

uh no, he is a highly accomplished actor playing a part very skillfully. In doing research for playing Jesus he studied the Gospels looking "for some clue as to who this man was" and concluded "there is nothing there. Nothing." He carefully crafted a performance that would appeal to as many people as possible, believers and non believers.

Lovely moment between Steiger and Zefferelli, the finest Jesus and Pilate on film, credit to Robert Powell for holding his own against the Great Rod Steiger.

@@MrMjolnir69 I found Powell`s Jesus prototypical, at times he appears to be in a trance, he is more spirit than flesh, more icon than man, he is a figure from a passion play, an agent of the divine, rather than a being defined by his mortality, and failings as a man, those he is born to redeem. Pilate is much more immediately engaging, as in historical records he appears ruthless, wily, manipulative, and amoral The disconnect between the Catholic Pilate, who is reluctant to condemn Christ, who is a conflicted rather than immoral man, and the historical Pilate, who was so ruthless and divisive he was relieved of his command in Judea and recalled to Rome by Tiberius, the maniacal tyrant who exiled himself in Capri to all manner of cruelties and perversions, that he deemed Pilate too barbaric to remain Procurator of Judea, tells us everything we know about the chasm between history and theology. Steiger`s Pilate is that of Anthony Burgees and Franco Zefferelli. He has warmth, humour, a sensei of irony, is reluctant to condemn Jesus, and whose last scene is to look back pensively as Jesus is led away by the Centurions to his fate. Steiger`s quote that "He was a second rate soldier in a third rate post, on the make to achieve better things" is the clue to the success of his interpretation. Steiger`s Pilate looks like a man at the end of his tether. He is so corporeal, so human, I find it is he, not Powell (for no fault of his own) who brings the painful quick of life into their scenes together. Powell`s Christ is from a holy Mass, Steiger`s Pilate from a bloody massacre. One feels he is engaged in a ceremony, one feels alive and vibrant. It is almost as if they are acting in two different movies, I feel no connect between them as characters, as men, as humans. I credit Robert Powell because I can sense the emotion and empathy that is confined within his roles persona, like a fly in aspic.

Steiger was a 'method actor' and was clearly trying to inhabit the role before the scene.

@@thomasplak I mean this. Even if Jesus was all skin and bones he could been stronger than 10,000 gorillas combined. God can do anything. Jesus need not a strong build at all to be physically strong. I have people say to the contrary and that insults his divinity. Pontius Pilate was a vain and possibly bloodthirsty governor but there are shreds of Roman law and honour around in what he makes of Jesus and something around him.and his wife too. You cannot masterfully transmit all this with the aplomb of the Southern policeman in The Heat of the Night.and maybe that was why Rod was rathet lost for words. Hurd Hatfield did not act according.to.the Gospels but he had a bitter tang of an.ambitious top.holer sent to the wrong territory. He was against Jesus from the start and his marriage suffered very much into.the bargain I do not intend to spend the rest of my life in this miserable country.
