    This could very well be the best demo I've seen of the Runt 50. Must be the "E Standard Thrash Riff" signature thing you got going on, cause that's a GREAT reference for me. Just straight up sounds great. Thanks!

    Great review of a great amp , had mine for about 6 weeks now and is hands down the best amp I’ve owned ( and there’s been loads over the last 43 years ) , particularly for the ‘hair metal ‘ that I love to play .

    The amp is designed for 70s TONE and punch...that is where it excels...rolling back the gain, singing tone, harmonics.

  • @CryptToneMusic

    I have to say the amp gain + onboard boost was my favorite. I like a little more loose and thick of a tone since i play more heavy punk with a hint of thrash rather than full on thrash. I really like the rawness of this amp as you mentioned, seems closer to the old marshall dna

    Pair this amp with a boost and a Les Paul......and if you can’t find 90% of of the Marshall tones you’re looking for it’s straight up user error. Ignore all the message board snobs telling you it sucks because “PCB vs Handwired”. It’s the BE circuit and the electrons don’t care if their path was handwired or not. There is no mystique or mojo involved. Not to mention the fact that Dave’s amps are recreations of modded PCB Marshalls.

    Notice that in 12:59 your Audio interface ( i guess Focusrite) is clipping ... make sure you gain stage properly the mic for your next videos ... good content and good luck .

    Hey Kyle how would you compare this to the Supersport/Quickrod type sound. I cant play them side by side. I played the Runt before and really liked it. Also, with your recent higher production videos I think your channel will grow quickly. Keep it up!

    • @belligerentamateur
      @belligerentamateur  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Bradley! I actually think the Runt is surprisingly similar to the QR sound. It's dry, kind of grainy, clear and tight. I'd say the Splawn has more/rounder mids, a bigger, tighter low end and can achieve more saturation though.

  • @paulmales1889

    Hey Kyle, thanks for the very informative video. I have already watched a couple of videos about the Runt and got the impression that it actually sounds a little bit brighter and clearer compared to other Friedmans. Is that correct? I tried a BE and the JJ Jr. and found them quite dark and mushy. I love that 80s/90s Thrash tone and the Runt could be exactly what I am looking for.

    • @belligerentamateur
      @belligerentamateur  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I keep thinking about this amp because I really want a real JCM 800 but they're so expensive and these are like half the price new of what I see a used 800 for. I also love the Ampeg VL which I know for a fact is just a jcm800 with an added gain stage in front. Those can be had for half the price of the Runt 50 but they're unreliable and I have a VL-502 currently that needs work but a VL-501 would be a nice addition since it's the same amp just single channel without the bells and whistles. It's quite the dilemma for me, do I save up for a real 800 or a Runt 50 which is less but still expensive but new and more reliable, or a VL which is super cheap for the amount of amp you get but they're a bit sketchy 😂 I'm super into the old school sound of bands like Power Trip and Fugitive which Blake uses an 800 in both bands with a tube screamer so it's kind of like a god tier dream amp for me 😂 i feel like it might be worth it to save for a year or more just to get what I'm really after because if i buy something else I'll still just be dreaming of a real Marshall

  • @doug441
    @doug441 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I have this amp, and play much the same style as you, (mostly thrashy, Iced Earthy riffage flavors, some drop-D), and I've found that the "presence" knob should be called "teeth", as that's where the magic is. I just lower the treble below noon, and boost some lower mids with an MXR 10-Band in the loop. I hit the front end with a VFE Dragon, and its a thrash metal beast, if you want it. It's certainly in there.

    • @belligerentamateur
      @belligerentamateur  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Absolutely agree. I've noticed the presence and Treble are very sensitive in regard to eachother on Friedman amps. They can go from too muffled to too bright very quickly, and fine tuning the balance of presence/treble is key in getting a good tone.

    Hey Kyle, love the videos. Question about how you run your TS9 into the Runt. I have the same rig and find that I need to run the TS9 at minimal gain but nearly maxed level. Otherwise, I find it too compressed for a neck pickup. Just wondering if you found the same.

      They're pretty different from each other, honestly. The TS9 removes a lot more low end and adds more upper mids. The Grid Slammer is more even across the board, but has more output. It depends on the amp for me.
