At the time there was a Leeds away kit that was blue and yellow stripes, the same exact colors as galatasary's rivals fenerbahce. Gala and fener fans frequently stab each other, it's a violent rivalry. The guy who got murdered was wearing that shirt, it's tragic but I think he just didn't know about the intense hatred between the teams and lost his life because of it. It can also happen in Rome, Buenos Aires, even Glasgow, if you wear the wrong color in the wrong neighborhood.

But why should football on the pitch and players involved "never forget". 20 years on players should not be shunning a club because of a violent event in the past happened which is nothing to do with the actual game of football. This kind of mentality is what still drives idiotic hooliganism in the first place. It's time to separate the grievance from off the pitch and on it.

It would be different if he was a well known big player who can choose who he want to play for. But maybe somebody at the club should just sit him down and explain the situation and explain if he goes he will have to deal with the fact he won't be allowed to return for reunions..etc and his role in promotion will be forgotten. Maybe he won't care but he needs to understand the ramifications of joining them.

As a Galatasaray fan, I would like to say that what happened in Taksim in 2000 and what happened to Chris and Kevin, whatever the reason, is very sad. Although there was a lot of mutual provocation at those moments, this is unacceptable. The 20-year-old who was responsible for the incident was sentenced to 15 years, but this situation does not alleviate anyone's pain. Such an event had never occurred before, and nothing similar has happened since 2000.
It doesn't change the past, but after the events in Istanbul, Galatasaray came out with a black training uniform to warm up at Allen Road. This is in the match videos of that day. With all due respect; An individual event should not be attributed to the Galatasaray team, the entire society or the entire community.

The situation between Kewell and Alioski are very, very different.
Alioski is coming towards what will probably be his last big contract and he has his own and his families future to consider. He joined us when we were a midtable Championship side on Championship wages and ever since he has joined us he has given his all. In all probability he wasn't going to be given either regular football or that big a contract. I would prefer it if he was joining somebody else but I can fully understand his situation.
Harry 'Judas' Kewell is a different case altogether. We found him as a youngster in Australia and gave him the chance to shine, there is no guarantee any other Premier League side would have given him that opportunity. He was there on the night and knows exactly what went on and the feeling that was generated and the hurt that was caused to the families, the club and the city. When O'Leary left he constantly nagged at Venables to play him upfront and in doing so disrupted the way the side had been playing. When the club got into financial difficulties he and his agent delayed his contract negotiations and he finished up getting a move to Liverpool where he and his agent pocketed most of what would have been his transfer fee. With that money and his huge new contract he was set up for life, he didn't need the money. But he gladly went to Turkey and even publicly stated that he was happy to be there. His actions were unforgivable and I can honestly say that every time he fails in management I'm glad. Harry Kewell is not welcome in Leeds and never will be again because he has shown just what a low life he is by his own actions and words.
So as much as I would like Alioski to find a different club I can understand why he is doing what he is and because of all the loyal and honest service he has given us I just hope that he shines in Turkey so that some other club will come in and sign him.

Agree with every word spoken here. I still feel uneasy about the idea of going to turkey since this happened when I was 12 and I ageee with both sides to a degree. I can certainly understand both sides. I understand the hatred felt for Alioski but I don’t agree with it myself. He isn’t connected to that time of leeds and that’s where Kewell differs. He was my favourite player at the time and his move was nothing short of despicable, disrespecting Chris and kevs memories, as he was involved at the time within the leeds camp. Alioski however, has no link what so ever with this and, although may be aware of what happened, roughly- won’t be too clued up and he has to think of his own family and career. It’ll be his last big deal at his age. We can’t say as a club, we thank you for everything you’ve done for us, helping us achieve promotion and giving your absolute all, game after game and taking this great club back to the promised land, but now, we don’t wish to renew your deal, we would like to recruit better so sign somewhere else..... then expect he should then follow what EVERY SINGLE LEEDS FAN would do and not join that club? What if there were no other offers? What if that is the only contract that may see him through his very long retirement? He should be thanked for all he’s done for us, and also should be made aware that he won’t get any leeds following after this move either, but let it be known that he’ll always be a member of our promotion winning side and celebrated as such, unlike the Judas kewell who will never be welcome anywhere near leeds, the club or the city ever again. I hope Alioski gets a great deal of money out of that club, I really hope he takes them for all they’ve got and then
Enjoys a great retirement remembered for what he did at leeds, not them, and I’ll always remember him as our crazy toddler dressing room clown that was one of bielsas pieces to his promotion winning jigsaw! MOT and rip Chris & Kev.

Interesting insight as a player from Danny though didn’t really touch on Galatasaray’s disgusting handling of the situation during the game and after, basically not even acknowledging what happened never mind taking any sort of responsibility for it.
What Kewell did going to them was unforgivable given he was involved in that side at the time, as well as being brought up from the Leeds academy

Oliver Milner as a Leeds fan I would never sing the Munich song, the death of the Busby babes was horrific and the premature loss of all those young lives and talent incredibly sad. In relation to the murders of the two fans which was horrendous and I think the game should have been cancelled and played at a numeral venue or behind closed stadium. That's my thoughts on both issues and both Leeds and Man United have there elements within their fan bases.

If Alioski is on a free transfer unfortunately for Leeds there’s nothing they can do. He probably has no or very limited idea about what happened. If he was playing for Leeds at that time like Kewell or reasonably soon after you could understand the bad feeling more. The timing of the incident now is 21 years on most professional footballers careers don’t last 21 years. It doesn’t mean Leeds should forget what happened but some things do move on.

Danny Mills is spot on here, I remember it like it was yesterday. I was due to fly out the morning of the game but flight was cancelled. The hatred for Galatasary will never go away, they refused to wear black armbands for the game and tried every way possible to blame leeds fans for what happened. Leeds United fans do have a reputation but no one, no matter what team they follow should go to to game and never return.
As for Alioski he has been great for leeds but it's clear no one has educated him on the history of the two clubs and what happened on the night of 5th April 2000. As for Kewell he is a Judas and is never welcome back, the fact that he actually played makes it even worse.

But to say that Alioski gets off without any repercussions from Leeds fans is to ignore what happened to Chris and Kevin and their families. Alioski has been with the club for four years. That’s plenty of time to learn about the club’s history. He’s chosen to go to Galatasaray regardless. That has to taint his reputation with Leeds fans. Anything less is a kick in the teeth for Chris and Kevin’s fanilies.

But Galatasaray has over 30 million fans only in Turkey and i know all those people felt sad in their heart for the ones lost their lifes but also there wasnt social media to know about how people felt and if they wanted share a moment for apology. And I get it that Leeds will never get past this awful tragedy regarding Gala. But the boy is ignorant of the situation and it's ridiculous to expect him to put LUFC fans' feelings before his family's security. Turkish clubs should have been banned for 10 years after this event. If Italian clubs had been sanctioned for their behaviour, Heysel would never have happened. Who on earth would want to play in Turkey league

I think Alioski should be cut some slack. I think he would prefer to stay at the club but he isn't being offered what he wants? Whatever that is....he is a first team regular and has been a good servant to the club. I wish him well, although I'd advise anyone not to go to Turkey.
Kewell, definitely no slack for you lad. Not content with shafting the club that made him by going to Liverpool and pocketing the transfer fee but joining those scumbags in Turkey.....

You can’t blame all fans for the actions of a violent mob. It wasn’t that long ago that the English clubs where the ones with the problem.
Should kante not have joined Chelsea after Chelsea fans racially abused a black guy in Paris?
