Hi Kevin lol
Hi kev when ever I have a bad day I watch you then I am having the best day
Hi
Hey kev would you check out the redcat shredder? It's a truck comparable in size to the kraton 8s and I'd like to see a review from you
Hi Kev! You should get the traxxas jato 3.3 and test it i think it would be a great video!
Back when I had NiCDs and mechanical speed controllers, nitro was pretty hard to beat...that little engine in my Traxxas Nitro Buggy ran like a top despite being thoroughly abused. Brushless motors and lipos pretty much changed everything and I cant be bothered with nitro these days, but I do still love that smell.
Back then nitro was just how you progressed in the hobby, if you were a decent mechanic. The last car I had as a kid was a Kyosho Stinger that I upgraded to an MKII.
30 years later a brushless electric is hard to beat. I still look at nitro buggies from time to time but I'd have to find a good deal on a used setup with everything included to jump into that all over again.
As I'm always been a fan of saying to each their own lol! I've always raced electric and I cannot stand nitro because of the reasons he mentioned. I'm just glad they finally measure up and have even surpassed gas. Now they're way more power than we need lol.
My 1st real rc car was a Tamiya Frog. When electronic speed controllers hit the masses I wanted one so bad, but not bad enough to spend $199 ( that was 90’s money)
I’ve always spent more time working on the nitro car then driving it
The whole part of nitro is working on the car... its sad to see it dying out because people are afraid to get their hands dirty 😔 real reason we race nitro is because we enjoy working on them its the damn hobby.. makes me mad people diss on it and its dying out because everybody wants something "bought not built"
Started with nitro and love them. I've never had an issue with all of my nitro cars . Yes they take some tlc to keep them going but if you know how to tune them and maintain them , they start right up and the experience is hard to beat. Love the noise, shifts, no charge time, and the maintenance part of the motor is rewarding and therapeutic.
Absolutely.... To hell with all that electric b.s. ... 🍻
No charge time until you forget to charge the glow plug igniter and battery for the starter motor and you don't have a pull start😂
@@youngeshmoney the glow plugs charge in 5 mins.most of my cars are pull start. The few I have with onboard starters, roto start have batteries that charge quick . Dont need to charge to 100 percent to get a start.
@@youngeshmoney jump box and you'll never go back. Plop it down push and go. Mine can either take 7 cell pack, 2s lipo or i have aligator clips to run to a battery
@@davelowets you are just weird, i could beat you with my electric over any nitro $100k
Keep Nitro Alive! Only a few manufacturers are left. Novarossi closed for good, SH/Golden Lion, who made all the LRP/Nosram/Mach engines closed down, STS too. I'm glad OS are hanging in there along with Picco and Force. It would be a very sad day if you could no longer buy an OS engine in your local hobby shop.
I agree with you nitro is something different makes you feel like a mechanic and I really enjoyed fixing my nitro when I was a kid
If nitro dies, half the hobby would be gone for me. Its just so much more fun to drive these things around than a brushless rc car!
Sadly Force and Hobao are the only ones that still make nitros bigger than .21 these days...
XTM is also closed for good
This is only until lithium becomes rare and batteries start drying up
Wow almost every manufacturer I grew up loveing gone for good...that sucks.but I hear him is comeing back, traxxas still going strong, and 1/5 scale gas bigger than electric, guess I'll hold on to my new rovan 360 5b all aluminum I love to look at and my outcast 1/5
Who remembers the days when .21 nitro RC was the epitome of power?
Even the Radio Shack Extreme Machine, Nitro Burner, Rock Runner, Road Phantom etc were awe inspiring.
Kev, put a small nito plane fuel tank in your revo. It will have a weighted fuel pickup, so when the car rolls over it won't stall.
I did this to my t-maxx 3.3
All my nitro stuff used a pressurised tank so rolling over made no difference at all. The carb has no float the tank has no pump and the engine has no sump. Thats why nitro is used in aircraft.
I miss flying nitro powered remote control planes! So much fun. But they built houses where out flying club was located. There's another one where I live but there's so many more rules and more people. Plus I flew with a group of Old Guys, they have all gotten out of it. Need a Nitro powered Drone!!
@@captainchaos3053 nitro cars will stall without a weighted pickup when flipped after a while typically around 30 seconds. The fuel line length, idle speed, low speed needle setting, throttle position and displacement of the motor all factor into how long it will run after beginning to suck up air. Model nitro Plane fuel tanks have a weighted pickup to keep the pickup tube in the fuel when inverted. Some even have elaborate ball valves that switch the fuel from a top part to a bottom port depending on orientation. The tank pickup design determines this, not the fact that the tank is pressurized.
the clunk allows for inverted flight..
@@kayzrx8 Well to be fair all the cars I ran had a weighted filter in them. Car would run upside down almost as long as it had fuel in lt. Idle speed is idle speed if it won't stay running upside down it won't run right way up either. The impulse from the pipe to the fuel tank is absolutely vital no mater what the throttle position as the engines create so little natural vacuum.
Well think about it, if you warm up the car before you leave it won’t die just pick it up and rev it and warm it up the glow plug inside stays hot from the combustion of the engine I never have an issue.
You’re amazing!
@6:12 it's nice to see a HPI Nitro Rush. That was my first hobby grade RC car at 14yo, and I got it from my neighbor for $40 after he wrecked the engine at the beach. I have fond memories of that moment when your nitro finally starts up, then crash it into a curb because you forgot to put the antenna up on the TX
Rip hpi
I must admit it looked really quick and good handling once tuned up...it's so nice to finally see electric start up brilliant...I think also because it's noisy your kind of tuned in better when racing it.😉
My first car was an RC10gt. I stared at the ad in Car Action for a couple years until I could afford one in 1998. I went with a pull start engine and after about 2 weeks I pulled the starter off and stuck the bearing in a socket and used my drill. Now here in 2022 it is again on my dining room table, about to be converted to brushless. Thank you Kevin, for reigniting my love of RC cars.
its crazy how back in the 80 early 90 there were kits to add nitro engine to brushed cars..now there are kits to remove nitro to put in brushless. I love nitro...have about 100 RCs, about half nitro....
1:20 I did this on my Slayer Pro, too. I had my on-board glow on one switch and the starter motor on a momentary switch. Was pretty nice. Same the truck was an unrepentant pile of shit that always broke down on me. I got fed up with having to fix it every time I drove it when none of my other cars have any reliability issues.
Same chassis as the Revo, too.
Your right Kevin makes it more fun to have a loud Winey smoke maker in your rc car for me it’s hilarious watching people come out there house to investigate the weird noise cause nobody in my town has ever seen a nitro car before 😂 love the vids kev
I raced a 3.3 revo for years. By far the most fun I ever had racing rc. Electric was fun but doing a pit stop halfway through the race really made it feel real
Kev, can make anything better than it was with a little help here and there. Love the videos don't stop keep on moving forward.
Kev the nitros should be able to idle though a whole tank after being tuned, and you should be able to take off nicely after it idles for a little to, if they don't it usually means it's tuned wrong.
If it stalls when opening the throttle richen the low speed needle .
Show us how to install the remote start. That is nice!
I would love to see a step by step video on how he installed that electric start.
He had redfin do it the video is there
It's funny I never had that problem with any of my nitro's ever its because people want all the nice stuff without educating them self so they blame the product
I took my ARC Ready 2 plane to a proper model shop and learned how to tune it as an 8 year old kid it always started with just a few turns of the prop if primed properly.
Hi Kevin, great video, I love nitro. I have the Hobao MT you are showing in the beginning your video. I did replace the pull starter by a roto start system. But the switch from the radio is even greater (and so cool!). It would have been nice to have your friend explaining what (and why) he was doing when he was tuning the carb'. Keep on posting nitro videos !
1:11 what u doing there kev😂 talking about "the wand"😂
We use to loop an extra foot of fuel line with a fuel filter to give you lots of time to recover from a rollover
0:33 On this I agree 125%. And that extra something is why I run basically nothing but nitro. It just ain't the same with no engine.
Yeah I can get the same sentiment from my weed whacker but it runs better than any nitro I've ever had.
@@BenBlackEquinoxEngelhard My nitros run better than my mom's OBD-II cars. Seriously. No joke.
Im currently rebuilding a Slayer I was given by a friend last year - im a HPI boy but Traxxas have really got my attention with its build quality! Hoping to have it running next week!
I’ve noticed with the harden spur gear, you have to puta harden bell gear…. But then you burn clutches up even if you go to 3 or 4 aluminum clutch shoe set up 🤔
That clutch is a must have on these. Running one on my Revo 2.5r and it's going strong 4 years running it.
hey kev if you don't already have one, you should get a traxxas jato 3.3.
Hell yeah the Jato was a weapon
06:17 Ah, I remember that feeling, it makes you want to throw the thing at a wall, stomp on it and smash it with a hammer all at the same time. 🤣
Your videos have inspired me Kev! The 2.5 2005 revo is out of my garage and alive today in Colchester! Still as temperamental as ever and that just the Mrs! Let’s see more of the revo please!!
As someone from 7-13 my dad had a dirt track in are yard and a bunch of ppl with nitro rc cars would stop by and race nitro rc cars and we had some and that smell and sound will never be replaced
Simple baseline is 3 - 3.5 turns out then adjust by .25 turn till it's in its sweet spot.. Im running a sledge now so I've got other problems to seal with! 🎉🎉
I have a 3.3 I bought in 2008. I forgot about how much fun it is to run that truck. Gonna buy some fuel and start it up again 👍🏼
I got an electric Traxxas Stampede when I was in middle school. I played with it for years. Even bashed the thing into a park bench going full speed and obliterated the front suspension, thankfully with so many repair parts the ole thing was running no problem again. The problem is that I was charging the battery a couple years ago after it sat for a while and all of the sudden, BOOM. I was terrified and never got a replacement battery. This experience is why I only use 2 stroke lawn equipment and why I plan on getting a Nitro RC car at some point, even if I am a bit old now (MBA student)
I set a remote start on my tmaxx years ago using a cheap little ESC from an airplane. It was sweet and blew the minds of everyone at the track. I gutted the wand and used the internals to power the glow so as not to blow it and we were jamming.
Oh man .. Kev between you two guys you keep so many entertained 🤣 can't we all just get along lol.
Hey kev!!
I ve been missing those longer wrenching vodeos!! Pls make them more often!!
You need to get the new xmaxx widemax kit! And the 1/18 traxxas lineup!
Can we all agree that kevs brother edits spot on he’s really good and we are getting way more content
I started with a Tamiya Wild Dagger electric. Then I got into a Savage 21 nitro. Since then I had a couple nitros but about two summers ago sold off my final nitro car (HPI HellFire) and I won’t look back. Electric brushless is too clean and easy now it’s just easier to maintain, they run fast and smooth. There is lots of upgrade potential. I always love nitro as I’m a mechanic. But it’s too messy for a hobby. I like snowmobiles too. It’s like a 2 stroke vs the new 4 stroke. I have both. The 4 stroke stinks less and less mess. But the 2 stroke snowmobile is sure fun to ride and just sounds better
And hats off to Jason at Redfin he is one smart dude and a true hobbyist, I’ve seen some of his cool mods and creations that Kev has shown he’s just always tinkering and improving the rc car. Very cool.
Someone who build this remote started did extreamly crude job... It all can be made much cleaner with use of esc instead of relay i actually made savage with remote starter and had to build electronics from scratch since what aliexpress provided burnt instantly(not wonder, i foud the dc/dc converter for the glow plug used in the og circuit to be 0.5A rated and glow plug tends to draw 3 times as much) now im trying to figure out remote turn off system.
I love my tmaxx. Love the tuning process of it. Knowledge of small engine repair helps alot in dailing in a motor. I have a electric one as well. But at the motocross track after a moto practice i love taking out the t maxx and blowing burms out on the 50cc track
I love my revo. Electric is faster and less maintenance, but there’s nothing like a nitro.
Nitro still has a better appeal than electric in RC planes.. especially 20cc and above.. the sound really makes a difference
I think every hobbyist should have atleast one nitro/piston rc however I only run brushless/lipos now and will never ho back. The sound and smell of a nitro is hard to beat tho 😃
Well edited keV , what about the 9 races you lost 😂😂😂 was a fun afternoon though
When I owned my revo 3.3. It took me awhile to get the tune right but once I got it dialed it. It would wheelie from a dead stop and flip over backwards once in 2nd gear. Took me like 3 gallons of fuel to get the tune right. My next rc will definitely be another nitro
I have the 3.3 in my old rustler sport with positive traction....no problems....did the Adam Drake break in ...starts n runs perf etly
So, the thing about the contact patch on a friction clutch, is that the smaller the patch, the harder and more aggressive it will engage under the same spring tension. That's why racing clutches for cars, have pucks, not complete rings. In practice it puts more pressure on the friction material compared to the contact patch area, and it means it can transfer more power without slipping. Everything within reasonable limits of course.
yes! correct!
That's the exact Revo that I have. I took it out to play with it two days ago and blew the motor I want to hook mine up to the switch to start instead of plugging in that battery pack that's pretty cool
This video made me want to pull out my ol’ savage that’s probably covered in dust in the closet… shame I’m not a winter person. Must wait till spring.
I've never had a nitro RC, I may have to try one, one of these days. A bit of noise, complexity and tinkering vs no noise, but large batteries that take ages to charge. Each to their own really.
you forgot that those batteries can catch fire and burn down sheds and or houses if youre not careful.
my entire rc shed was burned to the ground due to a stupid lipo
@@VintageCR Dang….sorry to hear that.
It is always a better day when Kevin uploads
Very true
Especially for him 'cause he makes a bunch of money.
@ 2:26, your feuling a different truck. the tires/rims are amazing! is that a kyosho?
Like your videos man! Planing on buying my first buggy nitro someday! Love to get in to this hobby
Getting ready to get a revo 3.3, wish me luck! Love your videos Kev!❤
I love this modification but it’s seems complicated too do, I wish your old video was a little more easy to follow on modifying it but oh well, I still can’t wait to get my first Nitro 👍 pretty sure it’s going to be a Rustler
Last Nitro RC i had was a Kyosho V one R, powered by a thunder tiger Evo engine, this was around 20 years ago, I gave it up and have never had anything since, but still enjoy these videos just to see how much things have progressed.
They had a rc car track that they set up each Sunday at the bank parking lot, when I was a kid. You could hear the rc cars for blocks. They were super fast, and so cool looking.
Then I got into rc cars and the beginner cars were electric nicad 7.2v, the biggest choice being a mechanical speed controller, or a digital electric ESC. the better cars were nitro.
Later. They moved onto lipo.
My only gripe is that back when I was into them, they were all kits that you built from the ground up.
Now, everything is ready to run.
I’d be into them bringing back the kits. Everyone chiming in talking about how they love nitro, but, in my opinion, if it’s a ready to run model, it’s not a real rc experience anyways. if you’re not building it from the ground up, and all you’re doing is pulling something out of a box, then you haven’t put in the proper effort to get into the hobby. Anyone w a wallet can buy a toy, but a true rc enthusiast builds their car.
And if you build your car, then you can choose to like gas or electric, or both.
Me, I am glad that LIPO came out.
There is something extremely satisfying when you actually manage to get the tune of your nitro buggy spot on!😏👍
My first RC car was a Kyosho Raider 2wd (early 90's), with a brushed motor, mechanical speed variator (3 positions resistor) and a 7,2V NiCd battery whose charge lastrd some 5 minutes.
Then I had a nitro car Kyosho Inferno DX (1995 approx.) and it was a beast for me. It was much faster than the electric, but I could never "play" with it more than two deposits without damaging any part of the car. It was very frustrating on the time that online shops didn't exist and there wasn't any hobby store in 70kms from my village...
Talking to my brother about TH-cam channels and I was tickled that he watches you too. We both agreed that it has the right ratio of constructio to destruction. Have you made an rc skateboard for the ramps.
Traxxas.... metal everything drive train. Keep the spur gear plastic. Something is gonna break and a cheap easy to replace spur gear is the least painful.
Kev, please can you get hold of an FTX DR8? I know you’re more of a big brand RC guy but these are amazing for the money and would love to hear your thoughts on it.
1/8 6S desert buggy, 60 mph out of the box and built like a tank for just £329.
Good ol Nitro! Tuning - wrenching - maintenance - ALL more technical and effective on Nitro models. It is a "dying breed" but is worth knowing and understanding. Not many people these days really get into it and Traxxas did a good job of making it more user friendly but it is still not that simple. So many people get Nitro models not knowing what they are doing and expect it "just to run" without needing to tune it not even realizing there is SO MANY variables that go into making a Nitro model work well. If this video does not prove that point - I dunno what would haha
Love your videos bro keep up the good work👍
If your stalling on the line it’s not tuned right my 3.3 will run though a whole tank at idle
Hey kev, do u ever consider getting and reviewing the traxxas jato. Very curious to see it’s performance :)
Turning is actually simple once you learn how to tune it by sound.. I have the all white platinum and the regular 2.5 chassis with a 3.3.. all the it's cold an I might convert to electric till it warms up here!!!
I run bones brew
What fuel you running mate?
An improper tune killed my tmaxx, most expensive tiny screw i have ever turned 😅
New motor will be here in a few days though. Lets see if i can get it right this time 😂
Remember under full throttle you need to see that thin trail of blue smoke emitting to be sure its getn enough oil
I heard you're building a monster truck!? It'd be cool to see the progress on that!
Recently bought a revo 3.3 for my brother in law....hope he loves it...they remind me of banshees....n he is a banshee guy....
Kev, why don’t you keep on flying the drones. Love your vids, and I hope you start flying again.
:)
when your friends exhaust all their lipos and you simply top off the tank again and keep on keep'n on, nitro still has its place in the world.
p.s. I started using the VP 9% oil nitro fuel instead of the Traxxas 12% oil and haven't had to tune my engines at all. there's no stalling and no bog at wide open. I did run about a gallon of factory fuel through the engines to break'em in before using the VP.
Best car for you is whatever puts the biggest smile on your face!!
@@DashzRight yes but the point is that it's fun
@@DashzRight You can drive and have fun with a nitro, you just don’t know what you’re doing.
Their is nothing wrong with nirto if you know what your doing all you have to do is listen to it an the motor is telling you I'm out of tune
I own two nitro RC's, Traxxas Revo & Slayer. also own a dozen electrics too. they are all fun to drive. electrics are convenient but that sound of a screaming nitro engine is just awesome.
hmmm if only we could buy them sorted straight out of the box . complete with remote start. Id have another in shot.
Kev, I really love your enthusiasm in all your videos. I watch your vids but iam not Subsribed but NOW I AM!!! I wish you great luck on the monster truck! You should call it KEVANATOR!!!!
Ok I understand but at a nitro you can make some adjust and go with 70mph and at a electric you need to buy to change the battery etc
It's a track like that that I'd run my second Thunder Tiger TS-4n around. My first would get stuck on the slightest bump. 🤣👍
Seen that title somewhere before 🤔 so familiar 📦📦
Haha thought I heard it somewhere 🤣😂
I’ve never had a stall problem on my losi 8ight t tune your stuff right it will run right
The noise puts me off it pisses people off so used to get moved on by locals on a Sunday morning with the electric I can go out early doors and Stealth Bash
We gotta see a full abuse test at the skate park with the revo 3.3!!
I love the radio switch start so convincing
I love the smell and the piston screaming but hate the maintenance
It’s just so nice to be able watch a video when it just comes out
I had a T Max over 20yrs ago me and a friend and his dad that owned a machine shop rig a remote starter It saved me a lot of head aches for sure 😁
Don't replace plastic spur with metal. If something goes wrong that metal spur is going to cause alot of expensive damage 💔 where's another plastic spur is very cheap to replace
Just seen a video of some guy driving a rally nitro rc car. The way it handled and sounded looked too fun. It had this turbo like noise as well. The inside of the rc was top tier. I think it’s great to have nitro and electric is all I’m saying. They’re better in their own way.
Ir most likely made the wining from the straight cut gears mashing together
I sold all of my nitro stuff for the xmaxx.... I just got tired of them... they are fun as hell when they are running well!
3:00 heyyy literally just got those same tools fasttraxx I believe
Someone falling in the right corner lol 7:23
Awsome, Kevin. Keep them running! So nitro doesn't die. I hope they never stop making the Optifuel.
I recently got a nitro from someone that is kinda broken and a lot of pieces are missing but this will be the first time i work and play with a nitro. I love electric and will miss them for a bit. I dont see me doing the hardcore bashing you do but lets hope she goes well
Kevin Talbot.
I was wondering if you could give me some advice on what nitro buggy would be the best for me to start off again? I had one years ago and loved it then had kids and never had the time but looking for a new hobby and I love these just not been in the know for a while and I have been watching your TH-cam channel and your a good guy and know your stuff so I would really appreciate any input you could give me please. Cheers
Before the video starts I have a question when are you going to get back to the gas Engine cars
4:05 Kevin: Blah blah blah blah
The guy: Yeah-no
Im looking at getting 1 nitro, I just want to try it out and see what its like. But I'm not really sure what to get yet.
Nitro's are cool! The kyosho foxx and USA-1 with the 3 speeds must be really cool and they are faster than there brushless versions I believe.
Nope, sticking to electric. But I do admire the nitro guys, more power to ya!
Nitro is great because you never have to charge anything, you just spend 2 days tuning to run out a tank. Lol. God I've spent so much time working on nitro cars.
@@mikedrop4421 technically you still have to charge the starter battery (if you have one) and you have to charge the receiver/servo battery. But at least the batteries last longer. Lol.
More power literally, jk I enjoy both only own 1 nitro to say I have one
@@savagepatch187 I did own a Revo 2.0 Nitro a while ago, it was fun (when it ran), just didn't have the patience for it. Never could figure out the tuning. Gave it to a nephew who's more mechanically inclined.
