  • Despite how smooth and polished Dan, Caroline, and Sam make me look on camera with their producing and editing, I promise you I am an awkward weirdo and it was even worse when I was in high school. Oh man was I a dork. Today I pulled together another Draw My Life to tell some of my most cringe and awkward moments from high school in Staten Island that I'm still embarassed about. Getting mono from my first kisses, being jumped walking down the street with my friend Alex, getting cheated on by my first girlfriend, huge fights with my dad... it was rough back then. Hopefully my stories will make your own awkward high school experiences a little easier to swallow. We all go through it as teenagers, I'm certainly no exception. Let me know your worst high school stories down below and we can all heal together!
I LOVE reading your comments and take your suggestions seriously. If there’s a subject you want me to discuss or something you’d like for me to react to, leave a comment down below. Many of my videos have been born out of suggestions directly from you, so don’t hold back!

Transparency, I like. Everyone’s high school experience is unique and you’ve shared yours. I was the quiet, study hard finish first type that stayed away from cliques. If there’s anything to be learned as a teen and young adult, it is to always be yourself. The popular crowd isn’t always the nicest, honest, or most virtuous or moral. And often times, you aren’t missing out on much by not being a part of the popular crowd. But that’s me, being an introvert, and being adverse to any sort of crowd thought or groupthink. Glad you found your way, and you still aren’t chasing behind the “popular kids”. Often times they don’t like people who aren’t truly one of them, and they hate the fake people who beg to be accepted by them, even though they like the praise and attention.
Your desire to help people and reach out to them and be a real friend almost cost you, but your heart was in the right place. Now you help people on a much larger scale through TH-cam and as a doctor. So your good personality traits only became more of who you are, and the fame and money haven’t made you a narc. Excellent glow up doc.

The whole Sophie thing I kinda relate to. I had a girl I kinda liked in high school named savannah, but since she was my first crush, I didn’t really know that’s what was happening, so I literally didn’t believe it for a while. The classes I shared with her were my favorite, and I always enjoyed the class outings where she was part of it too (the class was this thing called life skills where they would go on little outings in the community to difernt worksites or other various places), but I never admitted or even considered that I kinda liked her. There was a few instances during one or two of the outings where I found a flower or heart-shaped stone on the ground, and I almost considered giving it to her, but didn’t have the courage to do it with the other classmates around, so I didn’t, and I later on in life, after she graduated, I kinda regretted those missed opportunities. But still, so I kinda liked Savannah throughout my junior and senior year of high school, and then one day, on onna the outings, we were in the class van, and she mentioned that she had a boyfriend named Alan, and then she never seemed to mention him again (that I remember). So at that point I kinda stopped pursuing her, but my crush on her didn’t entirely fade though for whatever reason. Then after she graduated and later in that year, in like late November or something, the class decided to do a “thanksgiving event”, where they convoyed the students from my main class to it as well, and then they took the class to Haggens to get stuff for it, and then at the end as we headed back to class, the teacher asked if I wanted her to invite Savannah to it as well. Ofc I said I did, so they did, and then when the event day came, (it was a half day)l I arrived late because I had had an appointment earlier that day, but when I got there, i went to my main class and waited for life skills class to start, and once it did, I went down there and I was already kinda excited. Once I got down there, the teacher said that Savannah would be here in about an hour, so I wait, and then while the clsss starts watching A Vharlie Brown Thabksvibing, into the classroom comes Savannah. I smile, I get really happy and excited, and I turn around and head over (along with the rest of the class) to greet her. We exchanged greetings and stuff, and then she decided to give out hugs to the class. And who did she hug first? Me. I mean, it probly didn’t mean anything, but it was kinda nice. She had a big puffy white coat on and everything, it was nice.

I can totally relate to the rollerblade thing. When I was in middle school, I used to ride my bike on the street a girl I liked lived on and do all manner of stunts, hoping she'd see.

Well yes, if someone doesn't get into trouble in teenage then what are you doing with your life. A certain amount of problems, risks must be faced by adolescents to discover their strengths & weaknesses which helps in later life. Also it gives us so many new experiences. I noticed throughout this journey you have a good presence of mind & equanimity. Keep it up ❤

Dr. Mike is like a breath of fresh air when he said his father is like super strict and particular because usually the Asian community especially Indian diaspora (from my experiences) were always going on really hard on their children to do well academically. I guess, every parent no matter where from worries for the better life of their offspring. 😊
PS - Never hang up on your parents' call. 😂

I had a similar experience to what you had with your dad on the phone. I was at my boyfriend's house, my mom was out of town and my mom's partner at the time said I couldn't sleep over. I wasn't really rebellious either, so I knew I had to go home at some point. We ended up falling asleep and I woke up at like 2 am....oh no, gotta go home! Tried to go home, the power steering belt on my car blew (car was older than me). I pulled over on the side of the road, was helped by two older guys (rural farm Town, was dumb and naive to accept help from two strange men at 2 in the morning...thank God they were genuine!). Ended up having to call my moms partner to say that I tried to come home, car broke down, didn't want to cause worry. It was a lot of drama that could have been avoided if I was just allowed to stay over. Just sayin. 😆

Your dad was on point. No sleepovers with the opposite sex was NORMAL PARENTING. Not good to let teens of the opposite sex have overnight anything. He shouldn't have yielded with the "can't sleep, but come home" part because in the south, bruh, you'd be toast for trying it. Parents down here don't play that.

Another awesome vid. Looking forward to seeing the next one! I’d also love to see a collab with you and @Izzy Kornblau about living with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome and how to ensure we get the best care. I live in the UK and had to battle until I was 38 to get taken seriously and was diagnosed with the hypermobile variant. Still struggle to get taken seriously by the older doctors within the NHS who think it’s just about being overly flexible, and ignoring the impact on the GI system, urogynaecological system, blood vessels, etc… I know Izzy lives with EDS and helps spread awareness and is also training as a genetic counsellor, so would love to hear how you both think things could be improved in general and help her raise awareness too 😊

Love these stories Mike. It sounds like you were really 'on top: of things at such a young age, making a lot of situations your responsibility like on the school bus, making sure people went to class etc by reaching back into your brain, find what' personality' was needed and what the other people would respond to and change the outcome that way. It's an amazing skill, Mike, a skill not a lot of people have. I can imagine it does have its downsides too, being that good at playing so many roles. We got to see a little bit of how Mike became the Mike we all love today.

This video came in perfect timing. When I awoke this morning, I reflected on who I was when I was in high school. Sadly, it wasn't a good experience. I was very depressed, anxious, and secluded. I see how you've grown so much since then, and I can say that I have, too. I don't know exactly what the message is in this, but I will meditate on it as I go about my day. And, I had my bad hair phases in high school, too. 😂

Thanks for sharing your awkward moments in high school. 😁 Hell, if not for distance and a six year age difference, we probably would've been friends, because I was a huge dork. I was a tall, nerdy tomboy with poofy hair and a sensitive disposition. I should have been a ready target for bullies, except for two things: One, I snapped in junior high and beat the snot out of one of my bullies, and that story got carried over to high school, and two, I was the smart kid who wouldn't try very hard to hide her answers on tests if the price was right.
