  • I decided to try for perch with the fly rod, my thinking was,
    a) I could practice my roll cast.
    b) It would be good river fly fishing practice on moving water.
    C) I might catch a fish.
I took my 4# and trout flies, a tapered leader, indicator and a Diawl Bach on the point. To cut a long story short I ticked all the above boxes and had a fun time doing it, despite some strange looks from passers-by.

Yes it was fun with the fly rod, unfortunately that bit of canal is now devoid of fish . Check out my fly fishing for Bass video, that was fun.

I’ve fished for perch on the fly for about two years now. I have fished streamers and fairly regular looking flies (especially the flies with two little rubber legs coming from the tailand a small tungsten weight on an eight size hook)
It’s a fantastic feeling. Good book to read is Dominic Garnett “Fly fishing for Coarse Fish”
He also does a range of coarse fish flies. To be honest though if the fish are up for it, they will take what’s on offer.
Leaving the line static has been quite a surprise as well, fish must see the fly, then “eyeball” it for a while, then, when you move the fly after 15-20 seconds move it…. Bam!
Glad you caught some perch, it is an awesome feeling, you just feel you want everyone on the lake or canal to know then, “hey look what I have just done, it’s great isn’t it, you must try it to now, tell your friends!!”

We don't have many waters that hold perch in South Africa but I have caught some nice ones on a red booby fly fished static, and on Carolina rigged Zoom plastic lizards.

There are a lot of Perch over here in the UK, I like fishing for them with Lures also ( as per my other videos). Unfortunately fly fishing for them is quite a challenge. Thanks for watching.

@@PeterFryfishing A pleasure! Over here we do have great largemouth and smallmouth bass waters, and healthy populations of brown and rainbow trout. So my fishing has really centered around these gamefish, however when I have caught perch they tend to be a nice size.
I found that the bigger ones tend to hang separate from the shoal and are often in deeper water especially if it's a bright day.
Using a fast sinking line and a very short, straight leader - no more than around a foot or foot and a half - 10pound test - with various booby flies, either static as with the red booby or using short sharp pulls in between pauses with the others chances are good for a strike or two.
All the best of luck to you, and, tight lines my man:)
