Minimalist Home Office Build | DIY IKEA Desk Setup

- I didn't like the look of most desks online. And for the price, I figured I could make one that fits my desired look, size, and storage needs! I went to IKEA and picked up a few drawers and a wooden kitchen countertop. I work from home and I was sick of working and sleeping in the same room, so I decided to transform my den into a home office. Let me know what you think!
Countertop: www.ikea.com/us/en/p/karlby-c...
Drawers: www.ikea.com/us/en/p/alex-dra...
Would you have a link to the countertop?
No prob! www.ikea.com/us/en/p/karlby-countertop-birch-veneer-90335206/
Drawers it sits upon: www.ikea.com/us/en/p/alex-drawer-unit-gray-turquoise-30483799/
My man! 💪 got the drawers, thank you!
Question, do they give instructions on how to attach the drawers to the countertop?
@@s2klivin39 No - they are all separate pieces that I used to create a "desk." All you have to do is rest the countertop on the drawers, or you can use rubber seperaters to really secure it in place. Really simple yet aesthetic build!
I did this during the pandemic because I had no desk at home. I put locking wheels on the cabinets for ease of movement.
Smart move 🤌🤙
What I like is just how easy it is to move (3 pieces). I think that I'd put a locating pin in the top of those drawer pieces and then a tiny bit larger hole in the bottom of the table top. Then it's locked in position. Even 2 in each would be better. Impossible to slide the top off even if you pushed hard. Also, nice to see it in this colour, I was eyeing this one and it's a solid top for a monitor arm!
Love it.....and the colour 💕
Thank you, Cindy! Cheers!
I hope it’s Henny in that cup because I know you ain’t that exhausted from that 😂 nice set up tho
Hahahahaha
rs😭 he done kept both them clips in too
same setup but with risers and m3 tape so the top doesn't slip
Does it leave residue on the surface?
Awesome build.
Also your bike, she's such a beauty 😍
Bro, wtf. That thinglooks "not *that* good" at best. Also it looks very uncomfortable.
Terrific job, beautiful desk. If you add a little graphite to the door rail slots, it'll move so much easier. Thanks for the great ideas, especially the pasta😁. More please.
Thank you for the kind words and positivity! Truly.
Do you like the depth or do you wish you had more depth on the table top for your desk?
I’ve noticed the ikea countertops are pretty narrow
I have plenty of space to the right and left of my monitor, so I have no complaints about depth. Plus I like being close to the screen to mitigate squinting
I really love the color of the drawers!
This is the turquoise gray color option. I got the same drawers.
I loved your solution. I am planing to take your idea and add a drawer for my MIDI controller. Neat idea indeed.
Lmk how it turns out!
@@MakersMax sure thing!
I have the exact same Alex drawers, went with a different counter top! Great setup!
Thanks brother! Yours looks solid as well!
What countertop did you used?
I love the colors. Nice job bro
Thank you! Cheers!
I love this!! I clicked over to the Ikea item page that you've so kindly shared with us. May I ask if the correct size is the "98 x 1 1/2"? Essentially the longest possible one right?
Nice I'm adding riser legs to mine 😊
Impressive build! The desk was well assembled too.
Thank you brotha!
@@MakersMax You’re welcome Bro!
Thoughts on the draws not being the same width/depth as the desk? Will it still be stable?
👏👏that was huge!! Well done!
This looks really pretty and nice. I think I might just create my own desk now!
You should!
@@MakersMax thank you for sharing 🙏🏾😊
@@racheloshaksmusic did you do it?
@@yousihard8569 No I decided to buy an electric desk instead because I realised that if I made it myself I wouldn’t be able to adjust the height for more space
I love this ❤
Beautiful sir 😍😍
How can you fix the table top to the drawers
Liked the loook of that monitor , can you name the model ? Which one it is?
LG 4K UHD 27UD88-W 27" LED-Lit Monitor with USB Type-C
I love this! 💙
Thank you! :)
Love it❤
Thank you!!
How did you attach the table with drawers?
he doesnt
How would you even go about doing that?because mines have little holes in the bottom of the table but idk if they attach to the drawers themselves
@@Matt_722 There are wholes as I can remeber in the middle of each side of table, underneath. Drawers have same holes on same places.
But, I only used little velcro straps, as you place a table down on drawers they would stick together.
I'm fine with that solution 😉
@Matt_722 build it upside down 😉
E-bike battery explosions on a rise. Keep them downstairs
Is table top not fixed ? What if it’s accidentally pushed. Or is it the weight that makes it stable ?
the weight anchors it for me
Would t they slip over?
Nope
nice color choices bro, it looks sharpe
I appreciate that my dude!
Hey have you experienced any bending in the middle after sometime of usage? Please let me know I’m trying to see if I should put a support in the middle or not
Surprisingly not! She's held up really well
@@MakersMax thanks for your reply. I noticed you didint put the table all the way to the edge of the drawers. That’s the rout I’m going but worried about bending.
Sorry I could not open the link
The countertop is Karlby
But which color is it birch/veneer or oak/veneer?
Beautiful combination
Hi! Thank you! KARLBY
Countertop, birch/veneer, 74x1 1/2 "
You forgot the gripper pads on the top of the two drawer units. The worktop WILL move unless you use these, or the screws provided. (I've got three of these units in this house, more in my kids' houses.)
Didn’t forget, just opted out. I have a lot of weight on the desktop and she doesn’t budge.
Where do you get the gripper pads?
@@jacksonlarkin4827 They came with the item.
Nice set-up 👍🏼
Thank you!
Nice setup! Did you have any experience of this countertop sagging after some time?
I've seen it on other videos I'm using riser legs will strengthen the middle which is a bonus.
A year later and no sagging to speak of! 👍
looks great!! 😊what brand is your bike?
Thank you! It's a Super73 e-bike!
I would love to get myself a set of those drawers with the exact same table top, almost identical to the setup I was thinking about. But I already built my girlfriend a vanity using 2 of those drawers on top of an entire shelf, so I'm really burnt out on building ikea stuff for a long time. I wish they sold something similar in shape/stability without having to pay $180 for a bunch of drawers I'll never use.
Does the top slip? Or is it sturdy?
How do you stick the table down and stop it from moving? I dont want to screw it in im thinking about using sticky dots
the butcherblock is like 60 lbs with its own weight it doesn't move lol
Hi, i love the setup. But u should put a support leg in the middle of the table top. It will bend eventually if it hasn't yet.
Thanks! It’s been over a year and no bend or warping whatsoever
Isn’t the Karl by worktop 65cm in width and the Alex drawers are 70 cm in width, how did you make it fit ?
Beautiful house❤
Thank you! :)
@@MakersMax what kind of bike is that?
@@JohnAnderson-ev3lp Super73 S2
What chair is that?
Does the tabletop slid around or is it sturdy if so can it move at all if you bump it
It's sturdy enough, but you could put rubber separators between the wood and the drawers, or even some 3M double sided sticky tape if you wanted.
Bro barely worked at 3 seconds and he actin fatigue af son 😂
😂😂 adult Legos is tough work
Are those drawers always that hard to close? Is that an IKEA thing on all their drawers or do they also have soft, closing drawer mechanisms as well?
There are several ways to help the drawers slide. I've used a product called 3-In-One oil to lubricate the rails. Graphite from pencil lead works well, too.
They are super easy to close. I was inserting the drawers for the very first time in the video, which required a bit of effort to get them properly seated. They slide like butter now though
The desks always look great but the quality of the drawers leaves a lot to be desired. I say this as someone who just bought an ikea desk because even higher end desks were still made from quite cheap materials and so ikea won on the value side of things.
U installed wrong way round the counterpart holes are on the other side
Wrong way or not, still does what I need it to
He didn’t tell me to don’t forget to like and subscribe and I fucking forgot to like and subscribe bruh ! 😭😭😭
This is an incredible accomplishment. Well done.
2 Alex 1 karlby right ?
Bingo
did you install some of the drawers without the rails?
No, all had rails brotha 👍
I hope you were trolling, because the whole thing was very pretentious
How did you stick the countertop to the Alex drawers?
I just rested it on top. You could get some rubber separators to mitigate sliding/shifting but that hasn't been an issue in my experience. She's heavy enough to stay put on her own.
How is the top attached to the drawers? 🧐
No, just resting on the drawers
did you screw the top onto the drawers ? Or did you just set it on top?
I just set it on top
Oh my gosh such terribly hard work sweat in from that , how you like to try tearing a. Shingle roof , off . Carry 90 lb bundles up ,latter or even laying Sod down . Wh chumpetts these kids are
What counter top and what size or if you have the link can i get that
I just put the link in the description!
so many shots of you drinking water. why?
I wish you can give me your old laptop so that i can get that blessing too❤😢
Nice 🚲 ❤❤❤
Your BoP(bird of paradise) plant is in desperate need of water 😢
RIP BoP
What you having for lunch? Some bugs?
How many ft is the desk you got in this video
I think it's just about 7 feet
How do you keep your hair so fixed?
Elmers glue
Hello, Congratulations Cool 👍👏👏👏
Thank you 👍
Does the top slide at all? when bumped or pushed?
If you bump it with your hip, no. If you drop down and shoulder it like a linebacker, yes.
How much weight can the countertop and drawers hold mate cheers…
Hahaha, I haven't tested its limits but I'm 180lbs and can stand on it with no problem. What kind of stuff are you putting on your desk?🤣
@@MakersMax hahahah it’s just that I’ll have like 3 monitors 2 laptops and a few other bits etc just wondering as I saw another video elsewhere and overtime it became bent leaving a dip in the countertop due to all the weight... 😂🤦♂️😂🤷🏻♂️
@@anisuddin4395 The weight of that amount of tech might make the desktop bow. I'd add additional leg/supports beneath the countertop and/or a support beam running horitotally beneath it if you're placing the desk against a wall. Letting the wall brace hold up the desk in the back will help.
Those drawers are soooo expensive though!!!!
So does no one drill the table down into the drawers?
You could, I didn't
But did u screw the counter top down?
Nope,. Just rested it on top
Has it bent or bowed?
Not one bit
U just put deski on the containers or
Yep! The desk rests on the drawers
Which is the size of the table + name of the board. Is it from Ikea?
Hey man - I put the product links in the description. All items were from Ikea.
Where is the description? It's a short video which has no description
@@SantoshKumar-oy4km if your on your phone, hit the three dots in the upper right corner and then hit the “Description” button
@@MakersMaxyou are a hero
What countertop is that?
I just put the link in the description!
Why to me dose seems small when i mesure the hight on it and i am from europe i talk in meters and centimeters
Please don’t play clips of you grunting and heaving loudly
Won’t that be fixed? What if it falls?
It's heavy enough... It hasn't budged. But you could put little rubber separators between the table and drawers to really lock it in
@@MakersMax Got it. Thanks :)
The bottom of the alex drawer unit can be placed on the top and vice versa, the bottom of the unit is make to have holes to screw into the tabletop if it is used in a desk setup
IKEA from Japan
Guys a geek
minimalist lol
So much time, effort, sweat, hassle ... that's why I dont like IKEA.
Adult legos
Legos are not heavy for kids to carry, dont require tools and dont come with instructions. @@MakersMax
The TH-camr special
Your yeti is more expensive than your drill… lol
Hahaha both work like a charm
Did this at 1am last night 😂 not joking
How'd she turn out!?
@@MakersMax really good
just looked up the items this guy used, and it would cost $110 for each base unit and $275 for the "desk" top, that's damn near $500 for junk ikea crap. hard pass!
Alex drawers: $130 each
Karlby Countertop: $179
The good news is nobody is forcing you to buy it. Thanks for the comment!

Thank ya. Where should I put it?
The desk is a bit to narrow in my opinion, you sit too close to the screen
Personal preference I guess... Works perfectly fine for me!
@@MakersMaxnice view by the way
Not a fan of the colours of the draws
Then don't buy them
U need a better chair tho man, ur back gonna kill u
I would agree if I was sitting in it for hours on end, but I'm usually walking around my place on calls haha
@@MakersMax btw do u have those cotton pads on top of ur alex drawers. Does the worktop move when u push on it
@@Randomizedclipsz I do not, and it doesn't slide unless I really give it a firm shove. It wouldnt hurt to put some of those rubber seperators between the desk and drawers though.
@@MakersMax yea i ws thinking about those ya know, but i might as well just get a monitorized table, cuz having a sit/stand desk seems quite healthier than compared to just a regular imo
