Kyron Horman: Science Fair Turned Crime Scene (Part 1)

  • On the morning of June 4th, 2010, seven year old Kyron Horman was brought to his elementary school by his stepmother so that he could show her his science fair project. Skyline Elementary School in Portland, Oregon was having a science fair that day, and although the school would normally open at 8:35 AM, that morning the doors were unlocked at 8AM, to give the students a chance to tour the fair with their families. At around 8:45 AM, Kyron’s stepmother Terri Moulton Horman took a photograph of Kyron standing in front of his project, a detailed diorama of the red-eyed tree frog. He beamed proudly at the camera through his wire rimmed glasses, and then, according to Terri, she walked him to his classroom and watched him enter. But when attendance was taken that day, Kyron Horman was not present, and he would never be seen again. His mother Desiree Young would later say quote, “it’s like a portal opened up in the school and Kyron just vanished into it” end quote. The search for Kyron has been the largest criminal investigation in Portland history, but to this day there has been no sign of what happened to him, where he went, or who he was with.

      Since alot of you guys under this comment are also from the same area, is his name pronounced like “Kyrun” or is it meant to sound the way Stephanie is prouncing it like it’s two separate names, “Kai Ron”? It just keeps distracting me from the information 😭

    As an elementary school teacher, the teacher’s actions confuse me so much. His backpack and coat are there, but he’s not, so she assumes he’s absent? Teachers have a lot of things they’re managing, things can slip through the cracks, but the #1 thing on your mind, all day, when you teach young children, is, where are they? Especially after they return from a transition.

      what my husband and i find confusing and conserning is she didnt take attendance till AFTER they went to the science fair? that should have been a before and after thing how many kids did i leave with how many came back? the fact Derek didnt call Stephanie on that also alarms me they are looking at such a small window yet to me this window seems gapping!

      as someone who works with 45 kinders as a para, we are ALWAYS busy. So many bodies and so many things going on, and the 2 teachers have thier hands full especially on days with special activities/fieldtrips. That being said, we (the teachers and the 2 paras, so 4 people) ALWAYS do attendance BEFORE AND AFTER we leave the classroom for something. Two adults per classroom double checking the attendance- no matter what is going on. Unbelievable to me that that didnt happen

    • @erikaelyse8192

      @Foxieness13 the science fair was open from 8-8:35am for family and friends to see, so it was like floating and before school started. So that's why attendance wasn't taken before, bc school wasn't in session at that time.

    • @Foxieness13
      @Foxieness13 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      @erikaelyse8192 When he whent with his mom yes school hadnt started then Stephanie said he went to class and she left, after that the teacher said "they got into groups and went down to the science fair, when they reterned she took attendance" the first time attendance is mentioned by the teacher was after school started the class whent to the fair and when they reterned os when she said she took attendance and he wasnt there.... thats a biig gap be it the teacher misspoke or if its true the window in which he went missing a way bigger then we are looking at.

Many times I’ll watch these cases where whoever is covering it, their subscribers etc have one opinion when I’m just starting on the case with basic facts. It ends up sounding like an echo chamber so I appreciate you trying to stay fair until you hear all the facts. Imo that is so important to these cases as well as bringing the awareness to them also.. I can see it being hard for Stephanie sometimes when she has to research these first and then try to relay the facts to you. I am from Oregon and am so happy you’re covering this. This little boy deserved so much better!
    My parents live just a few miles from Sauvie (SawVee) Island. You don’t just wind up over there accidentally. You’re going away from Portland toward the Oregon Coast before you ever get to the turn off for Sauvie Island. There’s no shopping there other than a farm that sells fresh vegetables. You only go there with a purpose or you have a farm there.
    Also, when all of this was happening I remember my nephews wife at the time telling me she heard from co-workers that they thought his body would be found on Sauvie Island. At that point the media hadn’t mentioned that being a possibility. Sauvie Island isn’t some hugely talked about and super popular area so I thought that was odd. Around a week later the police started searching the Island. Later info came out about her cell phone pinging there. I’ve always wondered how that information leaked a week or so before police appeared to act on it.
    Sauvie Island is in the middle of the Columbia River. The river is massive (ships travel it), it’s very cold and dumps into the Pacific Ocean. Since his body has never been found I fear it’s gone forever. This world is so messed up!

Also ty for using my videos from Kyron Horman Case Revisited 😊 I'm so happy they brought you some perspective. That's exactly why I started taking the videos. Especially since so many ppl around the world follow this case.
    Just an FYI the soccer field at the school has a sidewalk along the side that goes to access road. Access road is where Terri parked her truck on June 4th. Access road is is shown on the flyers law enforcement made. I have another video that shows how someone could take Kyron out the west doors, go down the stairs to the soccer field, turn left, & walk right to access road or Skyline Blvd. The other thing is the hillside along the sidewalk blocks anyone from seeing you. Unless someone was lurking out the school windows. Terri told Kaine she went out the front doors & the later said she went out the east doors by where the busses park. But she parked straight in front of the school. Law enforcement said witnesses saw someone in or around the truck while Terri was in the school. Law enforcement also said someone could've driven the truck up access road. Which would've kept anyone from seeing Kyron leave. But you also have witnesses that say they saw Terri leave with Kyron walking through the parking lot down to the road where her truck was.

And watching his interview where he calls himself the prime suspect, then when the cops were asked, they said they didn't know who he was! That case was such a shit show. I really think this would be one these two would be able to unwravle that mess because I still have questions as to how the hell this even happened in the first place. He only got caught because he assaulted his sons girlfriend. Seriously, someone dropped the ball, and so many people were hurt.

    Often times I feel like as a true crime fan, I can sometimes get very desensitized to cases; sometimes even kids. However, I looked up pictures of Kyron today on my lunch break and nearly couldn’t continue my shift because I was crying so hard. Even just looking at his pictures, I can tell he was such a naturally happy, intelligent, and curious kid. Speaking from experience, it’s hard to get boys that age to smile for a picture without being forced, but Kyron genuinely seems so happy to be anywhere and to be a part of the world. To be honest, he reminds me of the kid from Jerry McGuire. It’s hard to believe that me, a stranger, can have a stronger reaction from just looking at a photo of Kyron than an adult who supposedly had loved him, than an adult who had been so admired by this child that he wanted her to drive her to school. He would be my age right now, I’m disgusted. Praying that one day this family can get answers. 💔

    There was a case in Atlanta, GA over 40 years ago that sort of “went away.” It took place in the upper crust section of Atlanta, Buckhead. A young woman staying in a hotel next to Lenox Square with her mother was in town for a close friend’s wedding. They attended a luncheon event earlier in the day with plans to return for the evening wedding. Sometime between the luncheon and wedding, the mother who had briefly left her daughter in the hotel room returned to find her daughter dead. Supposedly, the mother went on to the wedding not telling the wedding party in an effort to avoid spoiling the wedding.

    The reason that Terri is so dangerous is she (allegedly) premeditated Kyron’s disappearance! She didn't child abuse him and kill him in the process, she planned it! The other thing that stood out to me was Terri said she took the truck because she was going to pick up Kyron and his science exhibit. 1.) The dad got home before school got out. 2.) She had no plans to pick Kyron up from school because they all were waiting for Kyron when the bus came. 3.) A truck would probably be needed in that Marshland where her phone pinged and that is the real reason she used the truck that day because she had all this planned. I would be interested in what excuse she gave the dad for switching vehicles that day.

    I really appreciate your voice of reason Derek especially when these cases come up where Stephanie is admittedly unable to be objective. You're asking the questions I would like to hear answered, you're raising the scenarios I would raise and I really enjoy hearing your perspective.
    One thing I keep coming back to is how the police have said there's only an hour and a half unaccounted for in Terri's timeline. That's just not a lot of time to commit a murder, get rid of the body so effectively that all these years later it hasn't been found, then clean yourself up and get to the next place in the timeline.
    I don't know if my mind will be changed but at this moment I think there's so much about Terry's story that can be reasonably explained. I can't help but feel like the police honed in on her way too quickly and didn't explore enough other options. Also, some sources have said that when explaining her movements that day, she was near that island when she was driving around and that was the reason they started searching there. We know they were considering her their prime suspect already at that point and if it's true she told them she was near there, its reasonable to think that's the reason they moved the search there. Of course we can't be certain that's exactly what happened but it's certainly a reasonable explanation for them moving the search there. Also, for clarification, she pinged there, but that doesn't necessarily mean that that she was on that island. When she was near it, the tower there was the nearest according to some sources.
    Anyway I'm a huge fan, thank you Derek!

      I agree. Getting divorced and changing your name is not "odd behavior". When you look at the case through a guilty lens you start thinking that every little thing makes a person look suspicious when it just doesn't. Also, cell phones don't always ping the nearest tower. If there is an obstruction or that tower is busy, the phone may ping another tower with a clearer line of sight or stronger signal. All you can say for sure is that the phone was within range of that tower.

    • @britt905
      @britt905 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I did a google maps search and it says the drive from Skyline School to the Suavie Island Bridge is 9 minutes. This made me more confused that means she had plenty of time to hide the body, but also makes a rogue ping more likely.

    • @sashagabor76
      @sashagabor76 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@candipauline strangling someone is a very personal hateful up close way to kill someone and it's not often that women choose this method. It makes it especially unlikely when there are numerous witnesses who said they had no idea he was her stepson, they thought he was her biological son because of the way she treated him, with the same love and affection that she did her own daughter. If these witnesses are true and never knew he was her stepson and not her biological son, it makes it even more unlikely that she would then strangle him if she truly loved him that much. Like someone else said, when you look at this through a suspicious lens you'll find suspicion. When you look at it with an objective lens, willing to see both sides, you find it much more possible to be objective. That's all I'm asking for in this case - objectivity. I watched everyone dog pile on the stepmom, and to be completely honest I was perfectly willing to believe it was her since that was the most likely scenario. But then their evidence made me realize how quickly I could have been accused of murdering MY stepdaughter. Their evidence is flimsy at best and no one it seems has the ability to be objective anymore.

    I’m SO glad y’all decided to cover this! It’s one of those amazingly crazy cases. I think it resonates a little more when you are a parent. Not that it can’t do the same for everyone. There’s just a tiny extra tug on the heartstrings as a parent. Thanks for all your time & effort to keep drawing us in week after week!!

    • @MeganVictoriaKearns
      @MeganVictoriaKearns ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not a parent (oh, sorry, my cats just gave me serious side-eye 😂🐈🐈‍⬛) and when I looked deep into this case, I felt real, actual grief for this boy and especially his mother. I also was surprised the whole story led to me, a total stranger to these people, to feel literal anger in my bones over the absence of justice and lack of resolution. I remember thinking: My God, if I feel this way, I can't imagine what the mothers of the world are feeling when they come across these details. Particularly parents of kids who are still small, like 10 or under age group, or who had a child Kyron's age at the time of this crime.
      You're right to predict this case has the potential to really get to non-parents. It's a tragedy on a human level, amplified by the open ended investigation that, so far, has not produced any definitive explanation of what really happened to that sweet little boy that day. This story gets you if you're a human being, kids or not. But I agree that being a parent yourself must add a level of grief and frustration to how the facts of this case hit you, in a way non-parents like myself can't fully understand.

      Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this. Try a quick story. Saw doc on Elizabeth Smart years ago. Though another amazing story, at the time it only affected me to a mediocre level. Years later, I watched the same exact doc. Except this time I had a daughter. Even though I knew the story & how incredible of an ending it had, I was blown away by how much more the entire case effected me. It really blew my mind. Ever since, I’ve been drawn to similar cases involving children. In the end, the unsolved cases linger even more. I can’t imagine what this family is going through for over 10 years now. I truly believe this one is far from over. Again, thanks for sharing!!

    This is incredible. As a former teacher, I can tell you that at least since 1992, no school in my area has has open door science fairs. Each grade has an assigned time to go to the fair, and only at that time, can parents be there. In addition, any and very time that a non-staff adult is in the building, they must go to the office, sign in, show ID, and get a visitor pass. Any adult seen in the building without a pass is immediately reported to the office while being watched by another staff member. The adult is then escorted to get a pass, or ejected from the building, possibly by police. There is no excuse for a school not to know who is in their building.

      I also thought that was odd. I was in high school when Kyron was taken, and my high school was very strict about visitors / who they allowed to come in and out. All visitors need a ticket. Getting tickets was a hassle, because all people had to provide an ID of some kind to be photocopied for the school’s records. The only way to bi-pass that was to get tickets online and send a photo of your ID through that online process. Even those that were underage / did not have a driver’s license, needed their school ID. It always took so long to get everyone into events, but looking back… the school was trying their best to keep things safe.

      We have open door events all the time and I detest them. You don't know who's coming in and doing and with all the family court orders our school dealt with made it stressful. On those days parents would roam in and out of school. It was only after Sandy Hook when things started to tighten up with security.

      In Cali we do not have any sign ins for first day walking kids to class (just did that last week), back to school nights or open houses. Two decades of teaching and we have never had that in the high schools I teach in and my daughter's elementary school doesn't either. Now once school starts, everyone is escorted out and school is locked up with sign in/out like usual but outside of school hours there is pretty open coming/going for these events. This happened before school right?

    Thanks for covering this!!!! I remember watching the coverage on this case when the case was on Dr. Phil. It's in my experience, schools don't do a good job watching for visitors on special days. "Those" parents complain about having to "check in," on normal days let alone special days but it needs to be done! On these special days, I always took attendance and demanded to have my classroom run "as usual" the first half hour of the day, so I could take attendance and establish a strong foundation so each day was consistent so I could check in on kids and make sure I knew who was there. I was always told I "worry too much," but I didn't care. This school's systems didn't help. My heart breaks for this little one.

    Living in Portland I was amazed TH wasn’t arrested. Sure seems like others have been convicted with less “circumstantial” evidence. Though LS was only convicted because they found Gannon. I just know one day Kyron will be found somewhere on Sauvie Island. So glad you’re covering this!🙏🏼

    With my family, using separate staircases could have been either a race to see who's faster (obviously you can do that on the same staircase), or it could be an experiment to see which route is faster. It could also be that she went how she wanted to go and he just wanted to be different. Then seeing him get there and go in the door, not need to go further and just leave.
