Glad you got some value out of this video Ashley. Its a horrible noise. If you leave the unit turned on for 5 minutes. Switch it off and then immediately on again it will come back to life without the whine. The only problem is you need to leave it on. Ive attached my parts list. My only comment is the two panasonic caps are too high. Maybe consider two smaller, lower profile caps for those
@@roobone1978 thanks very much for this info! In the meantime I replaced the C148 as I had a "normal" radial 470uf but unfortunately after that replacement it refused to lock-on to an input signal (no bit rate light) which is actually a worse failure mode than the noise (at least it locked on to a input!)... However, my issue was worse insofar as the noise never went away - the dac had been permanently powered for some 7 years however. Not end of world. So.. I've taken the plunge for a new device. Sadly the repair route wasn't to be for my dac (or skills perhaps). But this problem seems so common I'm sure the parts will be of help to somebody else! Thanks again, and happy listening!
I also have one like this, the problem that mine has is that it doesn't show the sample rate and it doesn't emit the audio until it is indicated in its corresponding khz sample lights. The audio reaches Cambridge_Audio through all its digital inputs, even from a PC to its USB B, but the aforementioned has been happening to me for a long time... having to turn the power button off and on again, until it comes on sampling and finally the audio comes out. which some internal component is failing me, I have noticed that the hottest days, it fails less and on the coldest days, it continually fails me, having to turn the equipment off and on too many times, until it works again.
Hi there i was wondering if u can help me out with a problem regarding my Dacmagic plus. The unit powers up and the blue source and filter leds light up and a click is hearable. I have a cd player hooked up to the digital input. At the sample rate section the led does not light up and there is no audio from the line out or headphone output. Also when i connect the dac to my computer through USB the computer does not detect the DAC. So it seems that some circuits on the DAC or not functioning maybe because they don't get power or something. Do u have any idea where to look for the problem? Thank u very much.
Hi! Have you proved with another power supply? Try with another 12V power supply. Maybe the original power supply is noisily. I have a dac like this, it uses a Cosel 12V 7A power supply, and is ok, with a lot of daily use. And, I'd dont change components without any cause to do. I'd find the cause of the noise, an oscilloscope is fundamental for this.
I agree. Without said oscilloscope I was trying a process of elimination using comments regarding the same issue on forums etc. I have tried a few different power supplies. Still not there yet. More updates to follow.
many thx for the great video, very interesting,i was thinking of doing the same to my DAC Magic, reason for looking to find out how to get the back off,on you-tube ,but, would it be possible to give me the list of caps used uf/voltage and type,so i can do the same to mine,it would be much appreciated.kind regards and thank again,Mark PS,i don't have any whining, but think a refresh of the caps might clean up the sound,as it is getting a bit long in the tooth.regards.
I just opened mine for replacing the led panel (I got new replacement part from Cambridge Audio) and noticed that the C318 cap has bulged a bit. Have to replace that later. What specific Panasonic cap you used for those? I think I won't replace others for now, but just those six on the row.
Hi, thanks for your comments. I will publish a parts list shortly. I tried to use mainly Panasonic FC caps and a few Nichicons. There are some that suggest bypassing the caps you are referring to. I havent tried that to tell if it is a major upgrade.
I read your comment about replacing LED panel, I have a problem with flickering LEDs, and some not lighting at all. Just curious if that was the problem you had?. I was looking to attempt to swap them out, is the LED panel all one part?
@@daverich3352 Yes, it's one part. No too hard to switch, but sourcing it took a bit time and to be honest, it's bugging again after 2 years (couple of leds are dead). I believe there's some other problem which breaks the leds. Haven't debugged if it's some capacitor or other over voltage/current issue.

Hello TBone ! i have exactly the same issue with my DAC MAGIC PLUS. finally, did you find what's wrong ? it could save me a lot of time ^^ . Ty for your help
Hi Francis. Sorry for my tardy reply. The whine still occurs and have been getting through some other projects so haven't really picked this repair up again since. Have you had any luck so far?

Thanks, my DacMagic won't power up and I was having trouble getting into the case and your video helped.
Absolutely love it, been looking for a video on the audio DAC magic plus and you TBone have certainly delivered.
More to come!
Interesting to see how your screw the front panel back..amazing!
спасибо за видео разбора ЦАП.
Thanks for the DAC disassembly video.
Thanks for this post. Will pass on to my engineer. 👍🏼
Not my business…I mean the guy that’s going to fix it for me. 🙂👍🏼
Thanks very much for this. I have the whine too and will be embarking on fix/upgrade. If you do get around to a parts list that would be great!
