Another splendid video. Thank you Jay!
Thanks so much!!
i love the night markets in taiwan and theres lots of them, from good food to flea markets
I know right?!?! I miss that food!!!
Really enjoying your reviews, especially the trick takers! As for Taiwanese faves, more SOUP DUMPLINGS, please!
Thanks so much!!!
OH MAN WHERE TO START!!!
First, I love Trick and Trade!!! What a pick!!
And Robot Rick muahahaa! Love That!
AND THE SHELF SEERS!!!
And of courseeeeee the last point AHHHH!!! WHAAAAA!!!!! Thank you SO SO SO SOOO MUCH for picking OWL!!! I am floooooored and cannot believe it (and not just because today is April Fools Day)!!! Thank you thank you thank youuuu!! Just so wonderful to see this and such a wonderful list ahhhh!!!
CHEEEEEERS!!!!!!!!!!!🤩😁🙌🎆✨
You're very vey welcome! Thank you so much for bringing so much joy to my life! I love shedding / ladder climbing games! I really can't express how much I love this game. I've been playing Seers/OWL non-stop. I love how the almost-shedding wrinkle. It adds a surprising amount of depth to the game! My dream is that this game inspires more designers to create their own shedding / ladder climbing game and we get a wave of shedders!
I love braised pork belly, lu rou fan, from Taiwan. So good! I've been making it at home recently because can't find a good version at restaurants here
I need to buy a proper crockpot and start cooking some lu rou fan! I'm jealous of your skills! If you have any tips, please let me know!
I had the most amazing experience drinking tea in Taiwan at an archaeology conference. The lady that ran the shop spoke no English but sat me down and called her friend, who did speak English, to translate. I then spent at least an hour in there drinking Oolong and learning the correct way to prepare and drink tea. I left the shop with the smallest teapot I have ever seen and a wonderful memory from Taipei. The owner sure was rhapsodic about Oolong!
What an awesome story!! Thanks so much for sharing!
I love Taipei, thanks for the giveaway!
You’re very welcome!!
many amazing card games i need to find and try
Great video. I want to play all them games now geez. Fact I know about Taiwan is bubble tea was invented there which is my favorite drink in the world!!
It’s one damn fine cup of tea.
Great list! Been getting back into trick taking and hand shedding games, and there are so many good looking one’s here that I need to try! Last Dungeon Pocket was on my top games of last year list as well, and for me, I like it much better than Unreliable Wizard. Have you tried the follow up, Escape from the Moon? They’ve added a movement puzzle to it as well now. I’m working on the translation for an English language release. I’m also excited for the upcoming Last Dungeon Dice too!
Can't wait! I definitely need to pick those up!
Great video as always! I'm in love with Hipparchus, but haven't figured out Ptolemy yet - need to watch videos! Super excited to see Taylor as #1. And now I want Mini City... :/
I know nothing about Taiwan other than things you have said. But I realllly want PASS and superlove the cover design.
PASS is fantastic! I love the design of the cards so much. I've never seen a game with a better method of distinguishing 5-player cards from 4-player cards. Super subtle and smooth.
I'm visiting Taiwan in a few weeks so I'm excited! I will be on the lookout for hu jiao bing (Taiwanese Pepper Meat Buns)
hu jiao bing are crazy good (and cheap)! Just be careful as they drip oil!
The PASS cover looks aweseome!
Taiwan people are "spicy"
😂😂😂😂
The year of Tick taking game
I love stinky tofu in Taiwan! Can't wait to go back so I can get more (for cheap!).
You can make it at home! (Just be sure to open your windows)
Love your work, Jay! I miss Taiwan lots too. I hope to go back sometime soon and go card game hunting!
My fun fact: The word for apple in the Taiwanese dialect is "a-lingo". It's the only Taiwanese I know, and it's because it was my dad's nickname growing up. Why was it his nickname you might ask? Not sure. He doesn't even like apples.
Hilarious! I only remember a few Taiwanese phrases myself, including how to say "I don't understand" 😂
Went 2 boardgame events the last two weeks saw Christmas Tree and Vegetable Stock but didn't notice Mini City. Checked Eslite online for availability and went immediately to grab myself a copy after seeing your vid. Now I'm excited to try this game tonight. 😆
Lucky you! I hoped you picked up 2 copies!
I think skyscrapers are really cool and one of the coolest ones I can think of is Taipei 101, it is beautiful!
I concur! In fact, I proposed to my wife on the roof of Taipei 101!
Taiwan is just a great city. My favorite place is Jiufen and shifen. Just so much things to do there, I like the waterfall, and the geo park. Its a great destination for tourist. question is it 2 winners or 1 winner for the 2 games? 🙂
Taiwan’s highest peak is Jade Mountain (Yushan), and it’s a truly beautiful place to hike for people who enjoys hiking!
I'm saddened that I never got a chance to go. All the more reason to go back!
I recently got Ocean Crisis shipped to me from Taiwan, and my family is loving it. So I guess that's currently my favorite game from Taiwan.
I really wanted to love Ptolemy but it just did not click with my partner and I. Four Clans Conflict on the other hand, we loved, and made for a great back-country camping game!
Ocean Crisis is a gem that will never get reprinted. Hold on to it forever!
FCC back-country camping trips sound amazing!!!
Fully agree with your praise of Good Game Studios. I've enjoyed every game of them I've played, and they're way up on my list of designers/publishers to look out for. :D
Unfortunately all I know about Taiwan, is that it's on a different continent from mine, so I can't regularly check out all the new releases there.
Just follow me ;) I got you!
Another banger of a video Jay! If i recall correctly Taiwan has 4 official language 😅
Yup! Chinese, Taiwanese, Hakka, and Aboriginal languages.
Hey, love your videos!
I don't know a lot about Taiwan, but I do know that there's a night market there... right?
There's a board game with that theme, so it must be right.
Keep up the good job!
Thanks so much! There are hundreds of night markets there! One has the best tasting chicken I've ever had in my life!
Great reviews! Have you tried "Go Out Girl" from Japan? It's an interesting take on ladder climbing /shedding where when u pass, u take "damage" but also draw cards to improve your hand. Each round players secretly pick a character with special powers, and can win by either going out or being the last one standing. I've translated the rules and posted on BGG. I also translated the rules for Last Dungeon and Solo Camp (both by publisher Jugame) - posted on BGG.
Ok... fun fact about Taiwan: The tunnel through the mountain between Taipei and Yilan is over 8 miles long and is the 5th longest tunnel in the world!
Great facts!! Thanks for those translations too! And Go Out Girl sounds phenomenal!
Go to try Go Out Girl! I felt it was quite solid, but when I played with the Haricots variant, I loved it!
Very interesting choices there. Mini City tempts me so much.
I have never been to Taiwan, so my favorite thing about it is my old neighbor Tina who is from there. She is an incredible cook and taught my wife to make the best spring rolls. So good.
Go Tina!! Mini City is so simple and fantastic!
Apparently Infiltraitors is getting a US release via Pandasaurus. When I play it I need to have a pen and paper handy to keep track of my deductions as I find it easy to lose track switching between the different suspect cards in play. Love the game though.
Fun fact about Taiwan? I visited Taipei last year and all I can say is that it's fun and easy to get around via the amazing metro system, checking out several of the great board game cafes (Board Game Hut and Sunny Board Games being my favourites), great food options (and tea), and visiting the stunning Peace Memorial Park.
Oh great! Infiltrators already comes with a way to track the possibilities 😉 Glad to hear it’s coming to the States!
I dig those game stores! I don’t recommend BG Hut as much as people often ask me where to buy the locally published games and BG Hut focuses more on imported games. Sunny is a good mix of both though!
Another fantastic list and video Jay! Keep it up!
Thanks!!
I'm in Taiwan right now so I've made a note to go to Eslite if we happen to be near one!
Tonight one food we tried for the first time at a night market was tomato with sweet ginger soy sauce (I'm not sure what it's called - my husband said you can only find it by looking up the Chinese characters). I wasn't expecting to like it but I actually liked it - the sauce was sweet and you dip the tomato wedges into it before eating it. Pretty unique dish!
I know that dish! It’s wild! I never would have thought I would enjoy it.
My favorite thing about Taiwan is that my friend Teresa now lives there! Formosa Tea, Electropolis, Vegetable Stock and Touch it have all been huge hits for me! I agree about not liking negative points,Pass sounds incredible!!
It is incredible!
I regret watching this! My wishlist just getting bigger because of this video
Apologies! But you'll get some solid games!
I love Taiwan. I visited in 2022 before I got back into board games and am sad I wasn't aware that they had such a lively board game scene there! I loved taking public transportation, visiting the night markets and biking everywhere!! The food is delicious, cheap and I miss it a lot.
Such great biking too! Especially along the river! I miss living a 10-minute walk from some mountain hiking trails. Those were good days!
Taiwan is on my bucket list. Would love to see the culture and spend time with the people.
You'll love it! Be sure to go during the Taiwan Original Boardgame Festival ;)
My favorite Taiwan thing so far was our 6 hour layover on the way back from Seoul pre-pandemic. It wasn't enough time to go through customs and security to get back in, so we couldn't explore Taipei, but we managed to get a ton of great Taiwanese food at the airport, and local craft beer as well. Sunmai had a kiosk and we were able to get a few solid beers while there. Hopefully next time we get to actually spend a few days there (and we've still got a bunch of NT$ to spend from just the airport visit).
Ptolemy was good, but Hipparchus has been great from the same designer. Such a novel method of doing trick taking.
Wooooooo! I used to own a bar in Taipei, so if you do go back, let me know & I'll give you the skinny on which bars to go to!
My good friend did his undergrad in Taipei and was always raving about the beef noodle soup. Now I know they have great food and great board games.
The epic days are when you can have BOTH!
Beef noodles are indeed amazing! I miss them so much.
Google tells me that the garbage trucks in Tawain play lound music to let you know they are coming... Kind of the opposite of the ice cream trucks here!!
I agree! For my first month in Taipei, I thought ice cream trucks were coming!
The geographical center of Taiwan is in Puli (and is currently closed for renovation apparently 😅)
Oh rad! I did not know that! Thanks for the share!
I love Beef Noodles and dumplings from taiwan
The best beef noodles!!! I miss it so much!
Infiltraitors! I've fallen in love with this game, and everyone I've introduced it to thinks it's incredible!
My knowledge: Someone once told me that in Taiwan the rubbish (garbage) trucks play music, so you know when they are coming. I think it's awesome!
LOL. When I first moved there, I thought it was an ice cream truck!
@@CardboardEast That must have been so disappointing 😅
@@EmmaNovaheim It was brutal 😂
Great video, added a few games to my wishlist!
I really liked walking down Jiufen Old Street to the Tea House!
Old Street is fantastic! I loved the mild hiking there and the TEA. I literally brought bags and bags of Taiwan tea with me when I moved 😅
Dear Jay - I am from India and been following your videos for some time now and I must say you made me fall in love for trick taking games.
Got Joraku, and getting Harvest.
Need your help in selecting 1 more trick taking game out of these - Castle Builders, Of What's Left and Robo Trick - pls guide
OWL is my pick of those three (though it’s more of a ladder climbing game, like Tichu). OWL is extremely hard to find as there are only 300 copies on existence. However, Seers Catalog (the US version) is coming out at Gen Con & will be going to Spiel
@@CardboardEast in that case I will go ahead with Castle Builder and will wait for OWLs reimplementatoon😃
@@kishorepurohit8010 Castle Builder is a solid game! Love that art!
@@kishorepurohit8010 Castle Builder is a solid game! Love that art!
Hey, Jay, I've never been so impressed with the whole bunch of games of a review like this one of yours!! Honestly, you made me want to try all of them - and I am the type of player that likes 4 hour heavy euro games! Thank you for this video, it's a pleasure to listen to you and to your content!
and I remember, as a child, learning that one specific Asian island known as Taiwan was once known by my fellow co-speakers of Portuguese as Formosa!
Thanks so much for watching & the kind words! I remember, as a child, I had a lot of plastic toys that had “Made in Taiwan” marked on them. I never thought I would live there and fall in love again with card games
Fun fact about Taiwan? That Cardboard East guy used to live there!
I guess there's lots more. If you can figure out how to make bawan (肉圓), you'll be a hero.
I have a Taiwanese cook book that needs exploring. I'll get there!
Something I always found interesting in Tawain was that it is impolite to open gifts in front of the giver. So in this case, if you send me the game I have always been facinated with since I heard about its release we would be following the cutural traditions still. I always enjoy your videos Jay. Thanks for sharing, and I agree OWL is awesome.
Thanks for watching! OWL is very awesome!!
The longest lasting rainbow was recorded in Taiwan, almost 9 hours
Whhoooooooa! I did not know this!! Thanks!
@@CardboardEastHow similar to Unreliable Wizard is Last Dungeon Pocket? Do you think it will get picked up and published stateside?
@@kylekemp7933 Very different. UW has a map element to the game; LDP does not. However, LDP has a stronger sense of deck building in the traditional sense.
I suspect someone will begin looking into LDP shortly.
@@CardboardEast awesome!!! I took your suggestion for UW and am loving it, so to hear this about LDP is great news!
Taiwan has the 2nd highest concentration of convenience stores. And they are fascinating. Also, I agree OWL was the best card game of last year, its so much fun!
Ooooh? I’ve heard Taipei has the highest concentration of 7-Elevens in the world, which certainly feels true.
We may be in 2024, but it on year 113 in Taiwan. Taiwan has its own calendar year. Year 0 is 1912. I was so confused about food expiry dates over there, till I knew this fact!
LOL. It does take some getting used to for sure!
I heard OWL's getting reimplemented as Seers Catalog? If only someone who works at Bezier Gamers could get them to publish the other 9 titles in your top 10 list 😉
Oh, fun thing I heard about Taiwan, the garbage trucks play "Für Elise" by Beethoven as they go about collecting trash.
The garbage truck song is true!! I remember being excited as I thought it was an ice cream truck, but sadly no…
😅🤫 I love OWL but I LOVE Seers Catalog.
Dear Jay - Have u played the Bug Council of Backyardia. Any reviews for the same?? Pls share
I have! I really enjoyed it! It’s very tactical and can be quite swingy, so it has rubbed some people the wrong way, but I dig it 👍
Ilha Formosa 🇹🇼💜
Where did you get the English translation for mini city? I've been waiting to play my copy, but most people I play with can't read.
From the publisher 😁
It'd be a shame if you dropped a link to the English translation of mini city 😉
LOL. I'll have to clear it with the publisher first.
@@CardboardEast fair enough lol. I hope that they manage to bring over some games to an international print. I missed out on Taiwan Night Market (such a fun game) and now Mini City.
Nice video!! Btw, has Mini City been released? I went to Eslite and they didn’t have the game - they coulda’t even find it on their system :-(
It was sold in Eslite. Did you check the Chinese name? 小市場 The publisher submitted a BGG page for the game; it’s pending approval.
@@CardboardEast Thanks for the quick reply. Yes, I also showed them the Chinese name. I guess they don't have it anymore or they didn't fully understand me ...
@@johnt6192 If you're in Taiwan, I'd reach out to the publisher directly.
facebook.com/GoodGameStudio
What are the odds that MiniCity will get picked up by a publisher and get some art?
Not good? It's all AI-art because there are a lot of cards. That means, you'll have to pay for a ton of art, which isn't cheap. So a publisher will have to really really believe in this project.
I just learned that one of Taiwan’s biggest exports is in electronics and microchips-that those advancements have allowed it to become a very wealthy country for its size!
Also if you ever find out how to access Mini City (and your English language pnp) let me know 😉
Yeah. It’s wild. One company, TSMC, generates more revenue from semiconductor sales than either Intel or Samsung & only one client buys more than 10% of TSMC’s chips-Apple
The tallest building in Taiwan is Taipei 101.
And that’s where I proposed to my wife!
I know ACER and ASUS are Taiwanese companies :)
They are indeed!
I learned recently the indigenous people of Taiwan are ethnically related to indigenous people of the Philippines.
I've heard this too! WILD!
Bubble tea was created in Tawana and who doesn’t love bubble tea!!
… I don’t like bubble tea 😅 I just want my tea to be tea. I did go through a phase of drinking a ton of bubble milk tea & the brown sugar bubble milk tea is crazy delicious though I could feel my arteries clogging with tapioca
Yeah it is strange and I can’t quite put my finger one why it’s so good!
What is the publisher website for OWL?
Go to Taylor's Trick Taking Table on TH-cam. It's a limited print run so copies are hard to find. However Seers Catalog is coming out at Gen Con and will be extremely easy to find.
Is there any chance we could get a link to the files for Mini City? I would love a copy but it looks like I will not be able to get one. I searched for a while and didn't find anything on the game.
I'll have to check with the publisher
@@CardboardEast Thank you!!!
There is currently a living descendent of Confucius in Taiwan... and Confucius say… let Travis win PASS! 🙏🏼
😂 LOL
Where to get all of these great games??
I made a video called: How to buy board games from Japan. Most of what’s on there still holds up today. Taiwanese games are fairly easy-just contact the publisher on FB
Hi, my name is Pablo and I am a former bubble tea addict. **sits prediabetic butt back on chair** 😂
Stay strong. The tapioca is strong, but you are stronger!
Hey, Jay-do you have a Cardboard East discord channel?
Sadly, I do not! But I know a few discords about Asian board games. Do you think people would be interested in a CE Discord?
Absolutely!@@CardboardEast
Bubble tea was invented in Taiwan!
It was!!!
Taiwan has some great card games right?
It does!! Mini City is by far my favorite of them!
Taiwan has more than 14 million motorcycles and scooters.
OMG it certainly feels like that! I remember walking past that bridge from Shilin to Sanchong every morning. SOOOO MANY SCOOTERS
