Many pirate facts have been disproven with some research. In fact many colonists received much needed supplies duty free from pirates. Blackbeard has never been recorded for ever killing a man (there are few reputable sources) in fact his murder and beheading was technically illegal. Women were not often among pirates with the exception of a couple who were documented. Many pirates viewed women quite poorly and didn't even want them on their ships (it could lead to fights amongst the crews). There is no evidence of pirates wearing eyepatches for "night vision", nor were earrings common amongst English pirates or Jacobites. Dutch sailors and pirates may have adorned them but it wasn't as common. Theres a lot of "facts" about pirates we accept as true that simply aren't. Those who detested pirates (wealthy land owners, governors, merchants who were losing business from colonists to pirates) were the ones who wrote a lot of these grotesque depictions of pirates we accept today. There were bad pirates but there were a lot that really weren't and in fact would often spare crews, captains.

Earrings were common on all seafearers as it was for payment of their buriel in case the ship sank and their bodies were found ashore. Same goes for the common use of tattoos, which made a body identifiable. It's logical and fits the timeperiod. So to dismiss it on "elitist" history writing is shortsighted.

Welcome to my world...while studying the old gunslingers of the West I find most of it was pure grade A nonsense. Like for example the showdowns at high noon were mostly made up. Yes, there were a lot of gun fights but most were chaotic and happened at saloons. When I say "a lot of gun fights" I mean per capita. It was definitely not anything like Hollywood portrays in their films.

De romple name found french kings scott gaurds scroll list 1523. King francis. Im thinking the crew man sanson ripault of jacques cartier was dalrymple as well. Think they built those granite walls in st malo france and probably built the halifax citedal armourys. For 1812 war.

I live in Florida and we do love our pirates. As far as them being violent...was that supposed to be some kind of revelation? Of course they were violent, merciless, criminals, that waged war against the naval powerhouses of the era. Countries would even set them loose on their enemies with a writ to steal anything not tied down. I don't think I would call them terrorists however as they had a code. If for example they boarded a merchant ship they would not harm anyone if the crew cooperated. Whereas a terrorist would kill everyone on board. They also really weren't fighting for a cause other than to get rich.
Addendum- They should setup a gun range at the pirate museum that allows patrons to shoot flintlocks. If they did that I would go in a second.

Utter hogwash, my Father was murmured by pirates in Manilla Bay 1980. Pirates never have been fun & romance’ and never awfully successful, apart rim Captain Morgan, who was in reality a Privateer. He had though, exceeded his licence, been hanged, if he returned to England - he settled in or near Kingston Jamaica, and died of drink.
