I find it fascinating that some pirates in history essentially became their own nation-states, just on water. They had their own laws, customs, and diplomatic relations with different sovereigns. They would conduct raids on their enemies and enter into alliances with their friends. I'm sure they were less centralized than the average land-based state, but regardless, the fact that they did all this is such an interesting take on the more traditional model of statecraft/governance. The pirates around Pentos around the time of Mithridates acted like this, or Ching Shih's pirates in Qin China also comes to mind.

The thing is; it's really hard, there are two ways to determine the worth of something from many hundreds of years back; following the official inflation numbers, you might come to an amount closer to 20K USD, but to put into perspective how much that was compared to the average man's wage or wealth of today, you would have to imagine an amount of 600K.

It makes sense about the eye patch being used to preserve night vision. There is a chemical in the eye known as visual purple which gives you better night vision. The longer you keep the eye covered, the more visual purple you will accumulate. The rods in the eye have a slight night vision capability but you have to shift your eyes back and forth so the rods come into play. If you stare in one spot too long the image bleaches out and turns white. I also have heard it speculated that some pirates WERE blind in one eye from using a sextant. It is a navigational tool that has a small telescope on it Sighting in on the North star at night you could find out your location. During the day however, you had to use the sun instead of the north star. Modern day sextants have filters to protect your eye but I doubt if they had them back then. Might have been the cause of some blind pirates.

    • @JerKKeR
      @JerKKeR 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I'm currently replaying black flag and there's actually much more than just that.
Stede Bonnet, the merchant guy Edward meets right after he killed Walpole in the very beginning of the game was a real person and he actually worked for Blackbeard for a small time.
The argument between Hornigold and Blackbeard in the game was real too. Ben Hornigold actually took the pardon of the king and retired, whereas Blackbeard was just getting started.
The mission where you get medicine for Blackbeard is real too. Although it happened differently Blackbeard actually did take hostages and waited days for the medicine.
One more thing about Blackbeard and Hornigold is that they plundered the Concord together and made an agreement that Hornigold keeps the riches while Blackbeard keeps the ship which he then ultimately turned into the Queen Anne's Revenge.
The drunk captain that harassed Anne Bonny at the tavern was actually her husband. And the fact that she worked in a tavern to disguise herself was also a real thing. So was the fact that Mary and Anne announced their pregnancy during their trial. Mary actually died in the prison while Anne was freed (just not by the assassins)
This also applies to all assassin's Creed games. Rodrigo Borgia who's Ezio's main target in Assassin's Creed 2 and Brotherhood actually existed and he became a pope at some point too just like in the game.
And when the Notre Dame burned down in 2019 they actually used the renderings from Assassin's Creed Unity for reconstruction as it was the most detailed blueprint that was left
Nassau actually was a pirate republic irl. It was the third one after Tortuga and Port Royal failed.

Being a big fan of pirate history myself, this video was very entertaining but I did already know all of those things xD
One thing that I am pretty surprised about, they *didn't* mention that pirates pioneered democracy; about a century before the American or French revolutions, it was common practice for pirate crews to elect their captains and on many ships it was also accepted that any man could, at any time that wasn't during battle, challenge the captain for leadership and a vote would be held. Another surprisingly egalitarian area of historical piracy was the division of loot by shares, which were given out according to rank and importance to the function of the ship... if I recall correctly, traditionally captain and quartermaster both get two shares, other officers including non-combat specialists like surgeons and cooks as well as people in particularly dangerous roles get one-and-a-half shares, and the general crew get one share. It's a surprisingly fair and respectful way of dividing treasure for a group of people who are so often characterized as greedy, selfish thieves (though to be fair, they did do a lot of pretty mean things to get their hands on the treasure to begin with haha)

You left out that they practiced a form of very early Democracy. That's rather huge. Pretty much trumps everything else. Most pirate captains didn't rule by fear. They were actually chosen by the men. All of whom got a say, or vote, as to who would be captain. If he did a great job, he earned the loyalty of the crew.
If he screwed up one time too many, he was relieved of that duty. If he was a capable sailor and overall well-liked by the crew, he was allowed to stay on-board. If not, then he was the one who faced being marooned or killed outright for his failures as captain. The same applied if he developed an Ego or overinflated head. The crew would basically vote on all sorts of important matters that effected them both individually, and as a crew. Centuries before Democracy became popular.

I read that, pirates used eye patches to ensure that, when fighting in the dark, they could lift the patch and that eye was already adapted to the dark. Also, i dont remember if its pirates but, sailors wore knitted hats with the yarn ball on top to prevent from hitting their heads on beams and low ceilings when below deck.

*FUN FACT ABOUT BLACK BEARD, WHILE OUT ON A PIRATING ADVENTURE!*
One time, before *Black Beard* was a captain, he sailed under a man named Captain Benjamin Hornigold.
One day Hornigold and his crew flew their pirate flag and overtook a small sloop. Strangely, Hornigold and Black Beard didn't really rob or loot the crew, let alone harm them. According to the written account, it was said that Black Beard and Hornigold explained to the crew that they had overtaken, that the previous night Hornigold and Black Beard had drank a little too much and drunkenly lost their hats overboard. So, when they awoke that morning, in their hung over addled minds they made the sound decision to stop the next ship they saw, and get themselves some new hats.
So, the pirates made quick work of it, and Black Beard and Hornigold returned to their ship, along with their crew, sporting new hats. Leaving the sailors in the sloop with bare heads, but not harmed otherwise and short nothing else, aside from their hats.

Considering most pirates were sailors freed from being impressed into naval service against their will (a.k.a. slaves) or sometimes former chattel slaves, they probably preferred their "prison."

Jean Lafitte was well known for burying stolen goods as well as hiding it in swamps. Contraband Bayou got its name because of this. In fact one of the most enduring myths of buried pirate treasure involves a sizable fortune he buried at or around Galveston Island. Walking the plank comes from the sometimes but not often stage of keelhauling where a sailor walked out unto a gangway prior to being winched under the ship, typically by a capstan.

One theory I've come across regarding the Jolly Roger: It comes from the French "Jolie Rouge", meaning "pretty red". Since the earlier pirate flags (and the "expect no quarter"-flag) were red, and since France was a major player in the Caribbean, this explanation makes sense to me. I mean.. the word Buccaneer is also a French loan-word.

Billy the Kid was actually very smart and well educated for the time. He was also well liked by everyone who met him. Future New Mexico Territory Governor Otero had the best description of Billy's temper, Billy didn't have much of a bark, but if you pushed him way too far, he had one hell of a bite. Among Billy's ancestors were Irish Bonneys, he believed that pirate Ann Bonny was a direct ancestor, explaining him choosing the name Bonney while on the run.
