My personal computer journey began with the Atari ST so ill always have a special place in my heart for that system and it's ports. I loved Strider as a kid!
I had a mega-drive as a teenager and watching these videos is showing me again how great it was. Been enjoying these Jamie not sure how you're pumping out a new one daily don't burn out mate :)
I expected to see a lazy Atari ST port on the Amiga, but was pleasantly surprised to see it got it's own version with smooth scrolling and sprites. It still could have been better and shame it didn't have better mechanics.
Always loved that the PS1 port had unlockable alternate colors. It's a small but appreciated addition. Genesis port still rocks too, though. It and Ghouls & Ghosts being as good as they are there is still impressive. Great video!
At least they're using nice smooth hardware scrolling and sprites on the C64 version, but it could have been much better, a little later, but look at what they achieved with Turrican and even better still Turrican 2 proving it was more than possible.
This is the game that prompted me to purchase a Sega Genesis! I've always wondered what the finished Supergrafx version would have looked like in action - I've only seen still images in gaming magazines, but never a finished version.
I had the Genesis port, and that was plenty good for me. The PC Engine CD port is pretty impressive with the added cutscenes and audio improvements, but it lacks the layers of parallax. At this point if you are including the later releases like the PSP and PS1/PSX version, you might as well include the Sharp X68000. Is it an expensive computer for it's time? Yes Was it used as development machine for some titles back then? Again, yes. Here's the thing; some people bought these expensive platforms for gaming. The Neo Geo was notoriously expensive but you were playing it's arcade titles at home. I knew people that picked up the 3DO, that was around $700 at launch back then. Heck I picked up the Genesis(at launch), Sega CD(at launch) and 32X (at launch), that adds up to $650. The Sharp X68000 is an expensive computer with custom hardware, it SHOULD have impressive ports. It doesn't take away from what the consoles of the time did for less entry cost, and often times less power. I am impressed with how the Genesis comes extremely close to many an X68000 port save for a dip in color, a limitation in memory and storage, or lacking specific hardware abilities (sprite scaling, better audio chip)... I am impressed how many PC-Engine titles punch above it's weight class. I am also impressed by how many of these games are even attempted on those 8 bit micros.
I played it on the Mega Drive/genesis, and it was awesome, one of the best games I ever played for the Mega Drive/Genesis, I had a lot of fun playing it.
I remember the MD version always being on demo in shops to entice buyers. The Amstrad version was so so. Mode 1 was high res but it was a little bit of a style over substance game for me. The sequel is in Mode 0 on Amstrad
The genesis version can slow down at times, but it still looks the most like the arcade. Its a great game to just put in and play, older games are the best.
The Master System version was done by Tiertex. And anyone familiar with that company, knows how horrid they were with almost everything they did... including the broken Strider II on the Genesis. So they not only butchered an arcade port (repeatedly on various systems), but they made a shit sequel as well. YAY! The PC Engine version, to me, was so-so. It looked so much worse than the arcade/Genesis versions, and it felt choppier in places as well. It wasn't bad per se, but it wasn't on par with what Capcom did, or with how well SEGA ported it... IMO of course. As for the Genesis version, myself and a friend of mine way back then, had a small rivalry going. At the time, we were looking forward to a couple of games coming out. For me, it was Thunder Force III. And for him, it was Strider. We would give each other shit about which game was going to get better review scores when they came out. Sadly for me, he won, as Strider got scored higher in just about every game magazine than TF3 (though TF3 got a lot of very high scores as well). So yeah, he won. I also ended up beating TF3 on my first playthrough, so I learned really quickly that the game was very easy. Still played the hell out of it over the years, though. Eventually, I grabbed myself a complete used copy from Gamers (the same store I got Golden Axe at) for something like $25, and played that noticeably tougher game many, many times. It is a great port, and it's clear SEGA really wanted to make it the best they could to give the Genesis a big boost.
I have the pc engine arcade version, it's my favorite version. The extra cinemas, acting and stage says they went above and beyond. Some will disagree. Graphically it takes a slight back seat to the Genesis version which I had first and mastered, but the better orchestral music and extras puts the pc engine arcade card version on top.
Hmmm, I would agree with some of this, although I personally rank the Genesis/MD version superior to the PC Engine/Turbo Grafx version....again tho, these are personal preferences!! Also not sure I consider the Sony versions as "ports" since it seems they were basically arcade code put into the "collection"!! But again, this is all personal preference and you have a great video!!
I had the Amiga version and they changed the ending to make out the whole thing was a simulation?? Weird 😂 I then had the medgadrive version which was so close to the Arcade version which was impressive! Keep up the great videos really enjoying them 👍
Oh no tiertex , sends shivers down most peoples spines lol . U knew it was gonna be terrible Loved the arcade version and the brilliant megadrive port . Us gold managed to make the follow up even worse
I still love the megadrive port the best. I had the ms dos version before I got it on megadrive and loved that. But the megadrive version blew my mind.
Thanks for another classic video. Sadly teirtex did the ports for the home computers. I had the cpc version which wasn’t great. I played the megadrive version to death and I still have the cartridge. One of the more unique platformers in my opinion.
The Genesis/Megadrive version was the killer app early on that made me jealous of not owning a Genesis. I pumped so many quarters into that game in the convenience store down the road from me.
Iam sorry but I must disagree with the pc engine version placing it is so bad a version. I will always love the megadrive version, I brought it when it came out on Japanese import and still have it. Thanks for a grate video.
Was happy with the ST version back in the day. Though the Mega Drive version did look and play better. I’ll be taking a look at the PC Engine version later. Surprised this one didn’t make it onto the Dreamcast
I think the NES game is severely underrated. It felt like a proto-Metroidvania. I used to be fascinated by it as a kid because it felt so mysterious and full of secrets. I do like the arcade version though. Props to the 2014 version as well which is my favorite Strider now.
I used to play this a lot in the arcade when i was a kid back in 89, then later that year i got the Amiga version. Although i have nostalgic feelings towards the Amiga version, it's still weak in comparison to the arcade. The Megadrive conversion is also great, it looks and feels close to the original.
As much as i loved the pc engine the strider port w arcade card extra memory for games like fatal fury 2 world heroes etc should have been so much better than it was. Il never understand why it wasnt ported to the nec supergrafx?
The Pc Engine port at number 2? It's a legendarily bad port, terrible compared to the awesome Megadrive version. It's not even subjective at this point, sound better maybe but terrible washed out colours, ugly shrunken sprites, no parallax, missing tons of background/scenery details and just an overall mess. Even the gameplay feels off when compared to the arcade or Megadrive one. As an arcade port it is objectively sub-par. Especially the fact it came out in 1994! Better than the arcade? What have you been smoking? 😂😂😂
@@JustJamie1983 No probs. I know the game, the more people commenting equals more interaction in the comment section so helps with the youtube algorithm.
After the first couple I released, it seemed appropriate that some fully grown adults can not stop themselves from arguing like it's 1990 again. I don't run a channel like that. I like to run a respectful channel.
I hated the SMS version so badly. Slow, clunky, short, music was terrible...wasted $15 back in the day. Boy did I regret getting this. I had to force myself to finish it!
Amiga version was very bad, there were huge parts missing from the arcade version and the gameplay was much much slower than what u recorded from emulator.
The final Amiga level ends with an anticlimactic rematch against the robot gorilla. The final boss fight simply doesn't exist. Also missing are the robot panther, the brontosaurus ride, and a reverse gravity flip. But this applies to all UK micro versions. Random trivia: the Spectrum game simplified the levels to minimize loading and keep the large size of the levels at a good speed. Everything was done with an eye towards playability over graphics, in contrast to the C64 version, where the goal was simply to push sprites as far as they could go, and the gameplay was a secondary concern. Because US Gold wanted all these ports out as close as possible, there simply wasn't time to add much balance or even really finish the ports before release.
@@JustJamie1983 the other guy answered thoroughly, at a first glance if u play just the first minutes of the game it can look like a slow but decent conversion but as u go on in the game it starts to get really disappointing. I loved strider in the arcade and I was so sad with this amiga conversion, I didn't own a megadrive at the time that one was truly a great conversion.
Unfair is not including the x68000.... It s the Neo geo of japanese computers... It s of the same age of the Amiga... and would be nice to see it against the megadrive version (All Motorola 68000 machines)

The Megadrive port Strider sprite looks less cartooney than the arcade.
Yes. I can see that too now that you have said it.
The Genesis sprites are mature. It is a great port.
Interesting take, most people consider the PC-Engine CD version rather disappointing.
Thanks

Sega Mega drive is for me the best Version 😊
Its certainly a solid port.
I was a Nintendo kid- Strider was one of the games I was jealous of the Genesis for. I gotta check out some of these other ports!
Yup. I was a Nintendo kid too really.
Loved this game!! Much, much better than games like Altered Beast

Strider is one of the best series that CAPCOM ever made.

Glad you enjoy it!
Why is the x68000 version an unfair comparison exactly? It's a legitimate port,a very good one and not just emulation.
Because this game was pretty much developed on an x68000. It would be putting arcade VS arcade...kinda pointless.
I couldn’t think of a good port aside from the Genesis/MD version.
You will be surprised
Strider is a very great game.
Most definitely is 😀
