I just listened to Sinatra's version of this song and wow couldn't be more different. Ol' blue eyes sings it almost like he is celebrating the breakup, now I'm a free man kind of feel. Elvis on the other hand is a tortured wounded soul, wondering the night without a goal. You can feel the pain Elvis puts into this song. The kind of pain this song is about, one of a man telling us of his broken heart. Excellent review, thank you!

Frank Sinatra's generation sang happily about broken hearts and without passion . It was Elvis himself who changed music... HIS PASSION AND EMOTION frightened them. "The power of his emotion was frightening!" Not to mention how his wiggling made them want him in jail!

After Elvis died, my Mother was in a store and some slob said Elvis couldn’t sing. There also happened to be an Opera teacher from Ohio State University there as well. She told the guy who she was, and then told him he didn’t know what he was talking about. She said Elvis had tremendous range, and beautiful voice and could have been a great Opera singer.

    * * * Starts out like a mellow adult contemporary song. If it ended before the crescendo, I would not have cared for it. BUT the genius is his rendition..... He purposely made the first part very plain in order to intensify the contrast when he went in the exact polar opposite with incredible energy.

A great popular French song Et Maintenant. It was first sung by Gilbert Bécaud in 1961, but there are many versions in French and English. One of Elvis' greatest performances on this song. What you are watching here is a clip of something taken for granted today, but a big event in 1973, on my 17th birthday as well. It was a worldwide broadcast of the Aloha From Hawaii Elvis concert, going out live by satellite [gulp!] . It was unprecedented back in the day, except for the 1967 satellite broadcast that included the Beatles singing All You Need is Love." it is hard for those born later to imagine the experience of that moment in time with all the technology we have now. Yet as human beings, we still F-up all the time. To me, this was the last time Elvis stepped up to the plate and really delivered, after this early 1973 concert, for which he worked out and lost weight...after this it was all downhill for the next 5 years until his death. Just sad.

This song is one of my favorites from this concert.
It's sad that he didn't sing it more often.
A few days before this concert he filed for divorce, because his wife left him and took his beloved daughter with her.
I guess it wasn't easy for him to sing it, because of these deep lyrics.
    He sang it his way.
Another good example is "Yesterday" from the Beatles. Elvis sang it his way and it feels like you hear this song for the very first time.
    Please give it a try!
Thanks so much for your reaction!

This Aloha concert is burned into my memory as much as almost everything that's happened in my life. It seemed an eternity waiting for the day to arrive.
The female high voice here is Kathy Westmoreland. I believe she was dating at the time. The concert seemed to fly by. I don't think I got any sleep for 2 days before, or after. Great video. Really enjoyed your insights.

Cher did a great version too but no one can sing it like Elvis. His emotional performance always makes it come from his heart. Thanks for the review, I enjoy your reactions to Elvis.

Did Sinatra ever cover You Gave Me A Mountain?
These Legends knew so many lyrics, notes and timings....just genius.

Please consider his song "Surrender", there's great opera notes in there.

HIGH Harri.... I just want to say I'm very happy I discovered your reactions. You are one of the 'Coolest" guys doing them. I wish we were close neighbors just to share music conversations. My collection is "Ridiculous". Too many songs to count. Everyone ever worth hearing from 1950 till today. Lunch or dinner is on me. Have a Splendid Successful Day.
