Hello again new people! This video is blowing up and I'm currently very very very shocked! Please consider subscribing if you enjoyed, I'm mainly posting Soulsborne countdown/ranking content at the moment, but I have full plans to do a Metroid Prime Remastered video either this year or next year, and I cover Nintendo content when I can! I'd love to one day create content as a job, so every view & every sub truly helps! You're awesome!
It's great to see someone who has fallen in love with Metroid as much as so many of us have. I would genuinely love to hear more about your opinions on some of the other games you said you have played.
Hey, let's be clear here. Samus didn't release the X on to the rest of the planet. That door closed behind her and had been opened back up by the time she got back.
One thing I like about Raven Beak's boss fight is that he doesn't just use the Flash Shift and Shinespark, but also 2 of the Aeion abilities from Samus Returns. The aura that covers him during phase one is the Lightning Armor, and the rapid fire beam shots during phase 2 is the Beam Burst.
I love the number of times while watching this you casually say "Now just do this thing to progress" while the video is of Samus failing to do that thing. For example, at 59:20 you say "Make your way up the shaft" as Samus immediately takes damage and falls to the bottom. The contrast between what's being spoken and shown makes for a very enjoyable experience.
27:28 "Get those grab sequences!" Immediately doesn't trigger the grab sequence after successfully doing a counter I agree, those made for really funny details
@@BillySYT I did have a lot of "Just dodge, you fool! SHOOT HIM!! No, how could you miss that?" moments, but then again, I just went on vacation and this game was the only entertainment I brought with me so I've got a lot of recent practice.
This is, by far, the longest video I've edited together since 2017 - I am so, spectacularly proud of this review, and while I may be a bit too wordy for some, I hope you all find some enjoyment as you watch me analyse my time with Metroid Dread! If there are any errors, I apologize, I combed this video multiple times but I'm sure something escaped my notice - How about leaving a like if you spot an error ;D
@@quatreraberbawinner2628 wha this is a great review he just goes thru a lot of details in chronological order of the game.. while reviewing them.. he doesn't say what to do gameplay wise to beat them almost ever, its not a walk through
@@quatreraberbawinner2628 It's an in-depth review. If it was a walkthrough, I'd talk about how to get through every room, every EMMI zone, etc. I'm just analysing my experiences & the gameplay at a moment to moment level.
I can easily see the planet exploding being because Raven Beak had a deadmans switch set up as a contingency to wipe out the X in the case of his death.
My Dread Mode run was the most frustrating thing I have ever done in a video game. The final boss made me take a break for a few weeks because I would get so far in the fight just to fail and it made me too upset. But when I finally beat it I was over the moon. My proudest accomplishment in a game for sure
I am positive some other pedantic nerd pointed this out, but yes: not only does Kraid get a "third phase", but Z-57 falling into the depths of Cataris foreshadows this. That's the core that bot only grabs Kraid, but also Raven Beak at the end. Thus why his X form is a mutated Kraid
Fantastic review. Absolutely loved this game and it has become my favorite Metroid game. I do think the Varia suit in this game is the best looking Samus myself but respect people have their own opinions and the base suit is quite attractive anyways.
At first I really didn't like Dread's Varia Suit, felt like the gold, orange and white didn't really pop like the Power Suit's blue. But by the time I got the Gravity Suit I was sad to see it go. In particular I like how much closer to Samus' usual silhouette the Varia is, with Gravity completing it.
55:30 those enemies on the ceiling you mentioned can be grapple beamed when they flash that blue. I thought that was a neat change of pace for the gameplay. It might just be because Burenia is my favorite level (that theme is awesome)
And when you grapple beam them, they turn into another ennemy, one whose only attack is launching themselves at Samus. It does BIG damage, but if you counter it, you get BIG rewards. ( note that if they miss and you don't parry, they die without giving you any ressources )
very, very good analysis/review of metroid dread. i've gotta add, regarding samus' characterization, the way her visor is presented is incredible. they make it transparent to better depict some facial expressions, but then it will be completely opaque to show samus hardening her resolve or putting her guard back up. god, every cutscene makes me want to jump up and cheer from how well they're animated and presented. also, my condolences for Bobby, it was very sweet to honor him at the beginning.
Part of the structure was also so that if people wanted to watch parts of the video, go away, then come back on a later day, they could. Glad you enjoyed it.
Hey all, thank you to all the NEW viewers tuning in thanks to the Metroid Prime Remaster! It's been amazing seeing this video have a mini-renaissance of sorts. If you like my content, feel free to subscribe, I post smaller game reviews, countdown videos & more each week, and I'd love to have you guys! When I can afford it, I'd love to do another Metroid Deep Dive on Prime 1, so with your support, we'll see~!
side note about the radar pulse, we have had something like that back in super metroid. there was a scanner that revealed what kinds of blocks were in your view cone.it was very cool and yeah, didn't come back much if at all in later games. if at all. I actually kind of prefer it over the pulse cause you don't have to missile a block to tell what it is, and it isn't a timed thing. there's a reason most of the series tries to mimic supermetroid in various ways.
My theory on why Quite Robe reactivated the EMMIs: He knew Sami’s was going to need her full arsenal when taking on RavenBeak. His plan was probably to have Sami’s absorb there powers while shut down. But given that he most likely had limited capacity under the influence of the X, he done the next best thing. Trusting Sami’s to take out the EMMIs and get her powers back.
Thanks for the kind words. Obviously, long-form deep dives are extremely rare (I have to REALLY love the game to have the motivation for them), so my channel has a lot of short-form stuff to keep my editing juices flowing. But I hope to get another Deep Dive or two out this year if I have the time.
I did indeed flip out when my wife, Samus Aran, began to speak Chozo. She is shy about it so I had never heard it before. Thank you for coming to my ZDR talk.
As someone who’s beaten the game over 30 times, this was a great summary (or rather almost walk through) was super accurate and I think it captured everything that makes this game great! People who don’t like the exploration can just go where their gut tells them by following the breadcrumb items and will be fine, and the world is super open if you do like exploration and sequence breaks. Somehow (in my opinion) it’s able to cater to both sides of the Metroidvania genre. I really appreciated how you went out of your way to give some examples of sequence breaks instead of just saying that they exist as well! One thing that I noticed is that early space jump is possible a second way as well! If you get under the space jump room, you can use bombs to get into a little passage that opens up into the item room without the need of almost frame/angle perfect pseudo-wave shots. Other than that, you got the majority of skips that a non-speed runner could conceivably need and I really liked that aspect of this review, since most others don’t usually bother with that aspect of the game. It really shows the replayability of this game, which is why I’m still not bored of it after 30 times! If you’re somehow still on the fence on getting this game after this review, just freaking get it! It’s a phenomenal experience and it was worth every penny!
I knew about the other space jump skip, but I couldn't, for the life of me, pull it off for footage. Thanks for the kind words though - I'm really not much of a speedrunner, but even I could get into the skips and tricks this game allows for, and it really made replaying the game and going for those extra gallery pictures a lot more enjoyable.
Absolutely! The replay value for me has come almost entirely from trying skips and glitches found by the speedrunners. The feeling of finally managing to do a really hard glitch like stealing the omega cannon or something is such a neat feeling and it's made this game keep being fun and challenging!
1:06:22 except for the fact that it wasn't her fault. Remember, this door was _shut_ and _locked_ behind us when we came in. Now the door is _wide open._ Now...who do you think could have done that?
Well, we know that because Raven Beak planned everything, but in that moment it wasn't confirmed. Insinuated, yes, but Samus probably wasn't thinking "Dang, that Raven Beak" and more "Why is this happening to me?"
I know I am watching this vid a year after its been released, but this really makes me want to get a switch and experience this for myself. This looks too damn good to pass up
Just wanted to say, thank you for this review, this video has an astonishing amount of effort and hearth on it, especially from a person that came fresh to the franchise and experienced it with a clear state of mind. I wish your content had more audience since it clearly deserves it. Amazing work!
29:17 This part is the only one I really got stuck. There's no indication that the left wall can be shot. I had to watch a Twitch stream because I was there when the game was new.
I think I found it my first playthrough by complete accident. I would have appreciated an extra cracked texture or two there just so the player has a direction to go in without getting lost.
The original metroid for nes was one of the first games I ever played. I've played every single game in the series since. I treasure this franchise as most do, and as such feel qualified to say that........ you're 100% correct about the metroid suit. Best suit she's ever had. Hands down, no contest.
1:07:00 My theory on Quiet-Robe-X reactivating the EMMI It was done to kill Samus since she could defeat and absorb the X. By having the robots take her out, the parasites were eliminating a predator.
And my theory is: Undead Quiet Robe X kept uttering the last words he said before he got killed, which leads me to believe he knew that Samus would overcome these obstacles.
Also, in the Cut-scene where Quiet Robe X reactivates the EMMI, we see the EMMI demonstrate its ability by firing an ice-missile at an Autool, shattering it, so it's not actually a complete unknown.
I see Quiet Robe as reactivating the EMMIs as the X trying to kill their predator: The Metroid. Fusion indicates that the X get the hosts memories, and so if the X took over Quiet Robe, it would know that Samus has metroid DNA, and knowing the EMMIs are meant to kill her, again from Quiet Robe's memories, it makes sense it would reactivate them to eliminate their predator.
This is how you get a like and subscribe. I honestly thought I was going to switch this video out but Holy crap that was wonderful. And as someone that grew up on the Metroid formula and the OG games, welcome to the club. Ps can't wait to see your video when Prime 4 lands. Side note. First play through that game ruined me
I'll see what I can do when Prime 4 inevitably lands. If it's anything like the first 2 Prime games, I could see myself doing a deep dive. These super long review videos only happen when I get super focused on a game, which is sadly rare lol
53:00 my mind went immediately back to Fusion's SAX fight. Its actually very similar in design, I wouldnt be surprised if it where somewhat inspired. Similar pattern for avoiding attacks as well with the two platforms.
What a game, and what an awesome review. You perfectly explained why I love this game so much, and I’m sure that’s true for a lot of other people as well. Now I have to replay it enough to get all the images!
Thank you for taking the time and effort to make such a detailed video. It's great to see so many people get into Metroid because of Dread. It's a fantastic franchise consisting of some of my favorite games of all time, and it's insane how it's so often gone under the mainstream radar with how influential it is (creating an entire genre FFS). While Zelda may be my #1 favorite franchise, Metroid still holds a very special place in my heart. I first got into it back with Fusion and Zero Mission in the GBA days, and played the hell out of them. I literally waited more than half my life for Metroid 5 to finally become a reality, and for it to be the mythical Dread felt like the impossible come to reality. It still didn't feel real to me playing it upon for the first time, yet by the time I was done, it almost felt like Metroid had never left. Dread picks up right where Fusion left off, narratively and mechanically, and it wraps up an entire story arc like no time has passed at all. And you know what... I wouldn't have it any other way. For as much as I can enjoy reveling in Metroid being back, it's great the game itself doesn't fall into that trap like so many other franchises have after a long hiatus. Dread *is* unfortunately held back a bit for me with its frequent railroading and points of no return, as I enjoy getting lost in these games (so long as it's not confusing and obnoxious like Maridia or Torvus Bog). That said, it's hard to get too caught up in that with the never-ending supply of sequence breaks and just how solid the overarching product is. Tight controls, fast pace, clever level design, moody atmosphere, harrowing sense of isolation, intense horror sequences (EMMI), wonderful use of power-ups, *phenomenal* boss fights, and bar none the BEST characterization of Samus we've gotten thus far. When she spoke the bird language... my neighbors definitely heard my reaction. It's safe to say that Zero Mission remains my favorite Metroid, but Dread? Yeah. It's pretty based.
Great review! I especially loved the moment where you mention you have less and less time for games and as you were saying that you got a low battery notification.
My low battery notification era. In all seriousness, the fact I played SO much of Dread when I have limited time to game these days, says everything. Such a quality experience.
I believe that since Samus is the last metroid and therefor the nemesis of the X and the fact that the X can tab into the memories of their host, that the one infecting Quiet Robe activates the Robots in order to get rid of the one creature that poses a thread to them
You can slowly walk, you just have to use the cloak to accomplish it. I wish they had included more of an analog approach to her movement speed so you could creep if you wanted, but hey, take what we can get.
That's the thing, I kinda wish the movement speed of the cloak was available outside of the cloak usage. So you have all those movement options by default, but the cloak just turns your visibility off and on.
The ship likely destabilized the planet to the core in the same was the asteroid did for earth in dinosaur times. The ship was HUGE, easily the size of an average sized city
I use the morph ball bombs to get up the platform at 1:27:30 because I always go for the gravity suit early so I don’t have to struggle in ferenias Emmi zone
Oh God i love the way you talk so much about it never missing any even slightest detail! I'd love to see your analysis on every other Metriod, just for that video alone u deserved a sub from me n my friends.
1:17:03 hhaahaha this part is soo anticlimatic. Woo im amazed of how this is a clear review/ guide. Loving your speedruns advices, is like wooow +o+ This video was a nice experience. And i never played any Metroit game but they look epic, damn. High five!! ^^
1:15:20 for this boss there is also the option of shine-sparking into it by charging it as you head to the room. This skips it straight to the X-Core phase !
What a video! Bravo! Funny thing is that the one time that I actually reached the point of "okay what the hell... where do I go?" WAS indeed that early bit the one guy complained about. I don't know if my brain wasn't in the game yet or what, but it took a surprising amount of time for me to find those easily destroyed blocks. Also my biggest issue with this game was feeling very rail-roaded, but maybe that is because I didn't feel compelled to backtrack for item collection at any time, so I followed the very same amusement park patron pathway that the designers put in the game to usher non-metroidvania players through the game without frustration. My final gripe with the game is something I realize is 100% my own problem, and it is the distribution of difficulty in the game. Because I played so much original metroid as a kid, I really like when a metroid game makes difficulty spikes appear in the exploration phase more often rather than focusing the difficulty into boss fights (including EMMI parts in this game). My own ideal scenario in this game would be making the non-boss parts more dire, and the boss fights a bit more forgiving, at least when it comes to a first-play experience.
Nice review, I love the detail you put in. You probably know this by now, but the storm missiles work extremely well against Z-57's legs when it's putting them on the wall, makes that section a breeze. Also one of my favorite bosses! Dread mode was tough against him, I kept sliding Samus' toes into the pink goo on accident after making a flash jump over to the safe spot x.x Escue and the Twin Chozo Robots were much harder on dread mode for me. Those ones seem to reward you more for moving consistently in the same pattern and working in missiles around that pattern, where other bosses you more react to each specific attack they do. Like with Escue I run across the room, do a wall jump to avoid something, drop, run to the other side, do a wall jump,. drop, run to the other side, etc. Of course working in missiles when it's vulnerable. That's the only way I managed to survive the little purple thingies. Each chozo robot fight needed a different dance around the room too. The twins really sucked for me on dread mode, that's actually when I learned how good storm missiles were against them. Still took me way too long lol
In 1:27:34 you can have early screw attack. Speed booster in this corredor into the room before and shinespark in morph ball, into a tiny corner at the top left that takes you into the emmi zone. Then you will be find a bunch of breakable blocks further to the left of the map. It's easy if you have pulse radar. In the room of red teleporter, you will need to do some precise jumps with bomb laying to progress (the most annoying part of this) but after that, easy. I usually don't do this in casual or speedrunning, but I always do in dread mode, because as you said it, the earlier you can get screw attack in dread mode, the better. Ps: the only advantage screw attack gives to Experiment Z-57 boss, is they easily break his arms. Just that.
I barely knew who the guy was until I saw the Metroid drama around him, and ironically that was part of the reason why I ended up buying the game. A burning desire to prove someone wrong lmao
Metroid Dread is peak Metroid gaming in my opinion. This game and Zero Mission got me into the franchise, so yeah, big fan of Dread here, loved the video :p
55:36 the wall enemies that shoot lasers up and down the rooms, the ones that reminded you of mega man, can be pulled with the grappling beam and then countered for a quick and efficient death.
I’m at the final boss and have avoided any spoilers up to now, so I’m just watching this up to a point, but I loved the game thus far, and I can’t wait to play through it a few more times
"it's not that difficult" -Refering to Golzuna I had to repeat this so many times cuz I didint know you can slide under it...I always just screw attack (which I fail sometimes cuz of panic) or flash shift
I figured you could slide under it, since it's reminiscent of the minor enemies of that type. But when it nukes half the screen with cross bombs & I'm sitting there not realizing I can screw attack to the other side ;w;
My biggest gripe is how the beams are linked to progression and how they're handled. In Metroid 2, super, zero mission, and fusion, the Charge beam, spazer, and plasma beams weren't really required to progress. Of course in fusion you couldn't get out of the boss room without them, but if you had debug mode and disabled them right after, you could progress just fine. They were handled best in super when they were just optional upgrades that just increased your firepower. The wave beam and ice beam were the only required items, and those were used in creative ways like "freeze these flying guys and climb out of that pit" and the wave beam was ""shoot through a wall to hit the switch", which was mostly replaced by the diffusion beam in dread. Whenever you get a new beam in dread, it's just for a simple door. "You're not allowed to leave this area until you pick up the spazer which opens the spazer door and moves spazer blocks. You can't leave until you get the wave/plasma beam, which opens wave/plasma beam doors". It would be cool if I could sequence break and skip these items as well as the varia and gravity suits (without all the super complicated bugs, like axis skew and the floor clip) so I could add a bit of extra difficulty to the game if I liked , but I can't. This could have easily been fixed if they let us toggle items like in super or the mod for zero mission, but they'll probably never add that to the game The ice beam is also sorely missed, considering after fusion we know that samus is perfectly capable of using it without issues, and there was no reason to replace it with the ice missiles in dread, which just make the super missiles less effective. The plasma beam is also the weakest it has ever been in the series. Here's a comparison between fusion and dread in terms of stats. Fusion: 3x damage boost, per-frame damage Dread: 2x damage boost Dreads version of the plasma beam is only slightly more powerful than previous iterations of the wave beam, and for whatever reason, the massive damage boost was given to dreads wave beam. It also doesn't help that a lot of later enemies in the game are tanky as hell, meaning you have to mash the fire button like crazy and give yourself a cramp for it to be effective OR wait 2 seconds and counter, making the enemies more of a boring chore
I'm hoping when we eventually get a Metroid 6, that they feel more comfortable branching out with how upgrades work for progression. I can understand them not using quite so creative methods of progression, because of how many new players would be coming into Metroid with Dread, who perhaps weren't ready for something THAT challenging (Which I guess is ironic given I'd say Dread is extremely challenging regardless). At the very least, I'd love for the Ice Beam or something that functions similarly to return, as I found using the beam to escape Norfair in Super to be one of my favourite upgrade moments in the series. Dread plays around with the mechanic of being "trapped" in different zones, which I enjoy, but I agree that most of the ways you escape those zones end up being "Open door". Thanks for the comment, love hearing other opinions ^^
The devs put in several intentional sequence breaks: Grapple, Bombs, and Flash Shift before Kraid Super Missiles before Quiet Robe Pulse Radar very early (with bombs or grapple to reach orange TP in Cataris) Screw Attack before Z-57. There may be others I'm forgetting, but I figured I'd mention that the early Screw Attack you mentioned is not the dev-intended one. Once the planet is frozen, when you get to the room where the Thermal Generator thing is shown in the background (not working at this point), you can store a shinespark and use a diagonal up-left ballspark in the previous room to enter the morph tunnel in the corner, which leads to the David Jaffe room. If you keep going, you'll eventually work your way to the top-right of the Screw Attack room, which will let you obtain it while the planet is still frozen.
The mentioned early Space Jump was also not the dev-intended one. For the dev intended one, you can bomb the ceiling of the room below the Space Jump room, then jump up into the morph ball tunnel to get to it directly after Ice Missiles.
A year later, and I'm still in disbelief that this game exists. And to add a cherry on top, the game is one of the best Metroid games ever. I will never get over how fun, and how good it is. I love this game and it will always hold a special place in my heart. Just like Fusion did for me for years as a child.
57:13 I think those are plasma balls because I have see a lot of creatures in the Metroid universe utilize that kind of energy. Also they might be a reference to Phantoon from Super Metroid.
Dread genuinely is one of the only game that I actually ENJOY fighting bosses in, that also offer a level of challenge. The bosses clever hard to learn, easy to master mindset helps wonders with repeat plays, while also allowing an adequate level of challenge your first time around.
2 hour video about my fav franchise? How can I NOT sub?! Killed the review! Would love to see the same detail in other Metroid game reviews, but i know this is an unrealistic expectation/request
So far, the only game I have plans for is the Metroid Prime Remaster, but I can't quite guarantee when that'll come out. This Dread video took over a month of work from scripting, to recording footage, to uploading, etc. I appreciate the sub though, and hope you'll check out some of my other content while you wait ^^
@@BillySYT i can imagine the amount of undertaking it is to do another one of these, especially for metroid prime, so far with the quality i saw, im on for the ride man! Channels looking good!
So, for the final fight, I had never gotten the gold form of Raven Beak for some reason. He never did the attack you had to crouch under for me, which is strange. On both my normal and hard playthroughs he did this (still working on my dread mode playthrough)
Amazing review I’d love to see more like this it’s amazing to be able to create a video this big especially a channel thins small I hope you can get plenty fore fans soon and create more amazing content
I've already beaten Metroid Dread once, now I want to beat it again. I'm no speedrunner but I want to try a sub 4 hour run, seems fun. Loved that Dark Souls comparisson you made, I just played for the first time Dark Souls 1 and 3 and loved them, so now I want to apply that mentality to Metroid.
Metroid Dread was my first "hard" game. Before that I had only played Super. And because I had played Super, I was used to being able to go pretty much wherever I wanted, whenever I wanted. Boy was I wrong! I got stuck in Ferenia with, like, 4 tanks and I got DESTROYED by those two robots. Then I tried looking for something else and only found one more tank, I had to deal with it. Went to Artaria and proceeded to die 71 times against that red motherf-, and when I thought it would be over, I just found that Experiment Boss screaming at me. I. Wanted. To. Cry. I eventually ended up getting the Screw Attack early and it made things a little easier. Fun fact: during my hard mode run I did things as intended and after the Screw Attack, you get to Burenia and fight two more robots. Well, if you do this early you actually skip them, so I had no idea they existed. What a surprise.
I think it's be a nice surprise for them to add a new boss or two to the mix. Or perhaps it could come with a difficulty slider that lets you set how much health/ammo you have.
I’d be shocked if we saw new bosses. My only expectation is a result screen for time, damage taken, etc. I was so bummed there were no poses or art for Dread Mode
Been a long time fan but I too played every Metroid except the prime and AM2R again when I heard about this game coming out. Currently playing through again on hard mode now
I interpreted ZDR exploding as Raven Beak being such an egotist that he rigged life support between him and the planet, something akin to Mother Brain.
This game is aging like a good wine in my memory. I love the presentation, it is very Metroid but with a unique style and feel. Also, when playing Metroid prime remaster I started wishing for a more agile set of moves.
I'm not fully done with the video yet, but if i remember it right you can easily beat the enemy that gives you the storm missiles (or a very similar mini boss) with the shine spark - when you get it early. I think it even one shots it. edit: I think the "all teleporters are linked now" isn't a story progression thing, but instead you just have to have used all teleporters or possible teleporter routes. edit 2: That screen capture after the end of the last boss fight was probably every Metroid fan ever. I even did the fight again, after completing the game, to get better screenshots. Such a dope ending to an amazing game.
I believe I found out the shinespark strategy after uploading the video, since I know I've used it on that boss at least once. And yeah, I don't trust any Metroid Dread playthrough that doesn't have the screen capture button appear at the end of that fight xD
Thanks for making this! I actually found myself appreciating the game more after hearing your thoughts. It's not my favorite Metroid and I've got my complaints, but this video definitely increased my respect for it. Cheers!
Super Metroid was one of my first ever video games (I think I started it in 2000 when I was 4 years old 😂) and it has been my basis for all other Metroid games since Dread looks like it's.going to be super fun once I download it Also, THANK YOU. We just don't talk about Other M, it doesn't exist Edit: 999th like :D feels lucky
Love this video so much as it really made me really love Metroid. Only experience I’ve had before this was the GBC Metroid 2 which I never finished because I didn’t understand the final boss but really loved. I then played the remake Samus Returns which I adored and it made me like the series and interested in it because before then I never played a Metroidvania to it’s fullest just little bits. I had played Super Metroid but haven’t finished it yet because of the Switch Online games. For me Metroid Dread was just a perfect experience of difficulty of combat and adventure and while I understand your struggles to get used to the controls I didn’t have a problem with them simply because I did play Samus returns which introduced to how Samus plays now, so it made me feel great to be able to have more freedom then the more limited feel that she had in Return. I do think it’s a great game if you want people to get into the genre and Metroid series in general only other game I can think of which is great intro to Metroidvanias is Hollow Knight granted I haven’t played many Metroidvaians since it’s not my area of expertise that’s RPGs
I'd say Hollow Knight is perhaps better than Dread to ease people into the genre, but only because Dread has quite the tough control scheme to learn, whereas Hollow Knight drip feeds it's harder control elements across the game. I'm not sure I'd say Hollow Knight is the best starting game either though due to it's extremely slow start until you get the Mantis Claws. Maybe something like the Ori games would be a good shot. They have tough platforming, but extremely forgiving respawn times, and a majority of your progression is tied to collecting new movement abilities ^^
If I hadn't watched this video I'd never have known I got the Grapple Beam early. Having got it early on my first playthrough, purely through dumb luck and poking around, I'm actually pretty surprised how much farther you're meant to get it. Had the same experience with the Chozo bots lol. First one felt absolutely brutal, by the last pair and solo fights they were my favorite encounters, felt like proper rival fights that reward skill by letting you demolish an enemy who can match you in many ways. Taking two of them effortlessly feels so satisfyingly badass.
I just finished my first Hard Mode playthrough, and that super satisfying Ferenia Shinespark puzzle only took me a couple of tries. My Normal Mode playthrough had me plugvat least an hour into it. I also need to note, there was a several month long gap between the Normal and Hard playthroughs. I was absolutely satisfied by that.
You can get the flash shift early as well allowing for another grab sequence against kraid, when at the top of the magnet slide and dashing in his face

It's great to see someone who has fallen in love with Metroid as much as so many of us have. I would genuinely love to hear more about your opinions on some of the other games you said you have played.
i just got the suggestion after watching ucanbeatvideogames return of the jedi, im subscribing
Hey, let's be clear here. Samus didn't release the X on to the rest of the planet. That door closed behind her and had been opened back up by the time she got back.
Y-you have a point
I don't know where that idea comes from, considering Raven Beak admits he did it in the next fake-Adam dialogue
Oh my god THANK YOU! Everybody gets this wrong. EVERYBODY!
Fun fact: the world record 100% speedrun of this game is shorter than this video! Not that I'm complaining, this is a fantastic video!
You're too kind! Thanks for the good words
Ah damn, that's pretty cool! I haven't had the chance to try Returns yet, so I had no idea.
I worked with the footage I had, lmao. Wanted to make sure most of the footage was of my first playthrough for the authenticity.
27:28 "Get those grab sequences!"
Immediately doesn't trigger the grab sequence after successfully doing a counter
I agree, those made for really funny details
@@JacobPDeIiNoNi I'm an incredibly talented gamer, as my footage 100% totally shows
@@BillySYT I did have a lot of "Just dodge, you fool!
This isn't a review so much as a walkthrough, not that I didn't enjoy it
@@quatreraberbawinner2628 wha this is a great review he just goes thru a lot of details in chronological order of the game.. while reviewing them.. he doesn't say what to do gameplay wise to beat them almost ever, its not a walk through
@@quatreraberbawinner2628 It's an in-depth review. If it was a walkthrough, I'd talk about how to get through every room, every EMMI zone, etc. I'm just analysing my experiences & the gameplay at a moment to moment level.
Man look the video was great and informative but the damn game toss for the update made me spit out my drink. Literally 💀😂
I just recently beat dread mode.
Honestly my SL1 run of dark souls was harder and longer. And I'm way more experienced with ds1.
I think you're the first person to point that out, actually, good on ya ^^
Fantastic review. Absolutely loved this game and it has become my favorite Metroid game. I do think the Varia suit in this game is the best looking Samus myself but respect people have their own opinions and the base suit is quite attractive anyways.
The Varia Suit looks really nice, I'm just a fan of blue colour palettes so there's a lot of bias there.
Yeah I like the Varia suit here a lot. Usually I hate it cuz it looks so normal, but in Dread it was simply gorgeous
55:30 those enemies on the ceiling you mentioned can be grapple beamed when they flash that blue. I thought that was a neat change of pace for the gameplay. It might just be because Burenia is my favorite level (that theme is awesome)
Damn, had no idea. I'll give it a try next time I do a playthrough
And when you grapple beam them, they turn into another ennemy, one whose only attack is launching themselves at Samus.
It does BIG damage, but if you counter it, you get BIG rewards.
( note that if they miss and you don't parry, they die without giving you any ressources )
10:37 this genuinely made me smile, I was not expecting that
I'm happy someone finally commented about that little edit. That took me far too long to do xD
Awesome review man! (NaZ here). I really loved thi game a lot. I wish you the best in these hard times and my condolences for your loss.
very, very good analysis/review of metroid dread. i've gotta add, regarding samus' characterization, the way her visor is presented is incredible. they make it transparent to better depict some facial expressions, but then it will be completely opaque to show samus hardening her resolve or putting her guard back up. god, every cutscene makes me want to jump up and cheer from how well they're animated and presented.
also, my condolences for Bobby, it was very sweet to honor him at the beginning.
I love the way you structured this. One could watch along in pieces as they play through
Part of the structure was also so that if people wanted to watch parts of the video, go away, then come back on a later day, they could. Glad you enjoyed it.
How the hell you only have 600 subscribers?
This was a very well written, edited and presented video.
Hey all, thank you to all the NEW viewers tuning in thanks to the Metroid Prime Remaster! It's been amazing seeing this video have a mini-renaissance of sorts. We need more Metroid content like this.
Like true Hunters, we will wait patiently for quality content lol
side note about the radar pulse, we have had something like that back in super metroid. there was a scanner that revealed what kinds of blocks were in your view cone.it was very cool and yeah, didn't come back much if at all in later games. if at all. I actually kind of prefer it over the pulse cause you don't have to missile a block to tell what it is, and it isn't a timed thing. there's a reason most of the series tries to mimic supermetroid in various ways.
You forgot to show the ending shinespark during the escape! T_T
Trusting Sami’s to take out the EMMIs and get her powers back.
no shot you're calling samus 'sami' over and over
@@tribbybueno looks like I did.
1:27:26 I usually bomb up. Maybe even with early cross bombs which are ever easier to do.
hope you get more subs friend. good luck love the longform deep dives for sure. I appreciate taking a look at the finer points and mechanics.
37:19 I've died *many* times trying to practice this sequence break (check my Twitch for proof), but I think I've got it down packed, now.
I can’t!!!!
@@BillySYT she was definitely thinking, "Are you shitting me?! It's the BSL all over again! Now I gotta blow up this damn planet, too!! ...fuck!"
47:05 Really? id have to say purple emmi was the most nerve racking as there truly was no hiding.
Metroid Dread was everything it needed to be
This comment is everything.
The original metroid for nes was one of the first games I ever played. I've played every single game in the series since. I treasure this franchise as most do, and as such feel qualified to say that........ you're 100% correct about the metroid suit. Best suit she's ever had. Hands down, no contest.
What a presentation dude. I was expecting 100k subs or so when I thought to check. Great job.

My theory on Quiet-Robe-X reactivating the EMMI
It was done to kill Samus since she could defeat and absorb the X.
Love your review, you really know looking at details, and also love ur voice
I see Quiet Robe as reactivating the EMMIs as the X trying to kill their predator: The Metroid. Fusion indicates that the X get the hosts memories, and so if the X took over Quiet Robe, it would know that Samus has metroid DNA, and knowing the EMMIs are meant to kill her, again from Quiet Robe's memories, it makes sense it would reactivate them to eliminate their predator.
Thanks for the heart!
Also, this video needs more views!
How this not have more likes awesome video this is what I NEED
@@BillySYT yea, it's a shame.
This is the best full review of a game I've ever seen, as someone who loves the Metroid series and especially Metroid Dread you did it Justice.
Thank you! It's very rare that I want to just deep dive & breakdown a full game for a review, but Metroid Dread was just THAT good!
The ship likely destabilized the planet to the core in the same was the asteroid did for earth in dinosaur times. The ship was HUGE, easily the size of an average sized city
I use the morph ball bombs to get up the platform at 1:27:30 because I always go for the gravity suit early so I don’t have to struggle in ferenias Emmi zone
wooo worth to see all this long video, cause you make them funny and dinamic .And sorry for your lost, hope you are doing well after all
1:10:00 morph ball or jump and move the control stick slightly
Oh God i love the way you talk so much about it never missing any even slightest detail! I'd love to see your analysis on every other Metriod, just for that video alone u deserved a sub from me n my friends.
1:17:03 hhaahaha this part is soo anticlimatic. Woo im amazed of how this is a clear review/ guide. Loving your speedruns advices, is like wooow +o+ This video was a nice experience. And i never played any Metroit game but they look epic, damn. High five!! ^^
The best Metroid Dread review i've seen. Amazing work. Love the Metroid series.
1:27:33 you don't need to shinespark at all, you can use cross bombs to get up there VERY easily.
1:15:20 for this boss there is also the option of shine-sparking into it by charging it as you head to the room. This skips it straight to the X-Core phase !
And in the first Chozo warrior robot you can set up a shinespark on the bottom area, which is devastating against them.
Dread mode was tough against him, I kept sliding Samus' toes into the pink goo on accident after making a flash jump over to the safe spot x.x
Escue and the Twin Chozo Robots were much harder on dread mode for me.
Just that.
1:34:42 You can actually also use this route without a spacej jump, using a shinespark, though it is a bit tricky.
Huh, you learn something new everyday, nice!
Clowning on David jaffe is now my guilty pleasure
You can grapple beam the laser enemies of Butenia as they have a blue light on them
This seems like it’s gonna be a good vid, hoping for some more good content when I look thru your channel
"it's not that difficult"
-Refering to Golzuna
I had to repeat this so many times cuz I didint know you can slide under it...I always just screw attack (which I fail sometimes cuz of panic) or flash shift
I figured you could slide under it, since it's reminiscent of the minor enemies of that type. But when it nukes half the screen with cross bombs & I'm sitting there not realizing I can screw attack to the other side ;w;
This could have easily been fixed if they let us toggle items like in super or the mod for zero mission, but they'll probably never add that to the game
The ice beam is also sorely missed, considering after fusion we know that samus is perfectly capable of using it without issues, and there was no reason to replace it with the ice missiles in dread, which just make the super missiles less effective.
The plasma beam is also the weakest it has ever been in the series. Here's a comparison between fusion and dread in terms of stats.
Fusion: 3x damage boost, per-frame damage
Dread: 2x damage boost
Dreads version of the plasma beam is only slightly more powerful than previous iterations of the wave beam, and for whatever reason, the massive damage boost was given to dreads wave beam.
The devs put in several intentional sequence breaks:
Grapple, Bombs, and Flash Shift before Kraid
Super Missiles before Quiet Robe
Pulse Radar very early (with bombs or grapple to reach orange TP in Cataris)
Screw Attack before Z-57.
The fact that they are so many different ways to sequence break the game is fantastic.
Awesome review for an amazing game!
Rest in peace Bobby
There are very few games that I play more than once or twice, but I completed this game 4 or 5 times. Possibly my favorite game on the Switch.
Easily one of the best games on the system.
Saw the whole thing. Thnx for the video!
What a surprise.
cant wait to see the boss rush mode. I hope we see new bosses.
I think it's be a nice surprise for them to add a new boss or two to the mix. Or perhaps it could come with a difficulty slider that lets you set how much health/ammo you have.
@@BillySYT I think if we are to get some returning bosses this would be the place to put them.
I’d be shocked if we saw new bosses. My only expectation is a result screen for time, damage taken, etc.
I was so bummed there were no poses or art for Dread Mode
Amaaaaziiing review!!!
Great content I love this game so much
You can take a shine spark into the battle with the two Chozo warrior battle too.
Blue emmi was also the hardest emmi on dread mode since if it saw you you were dead.
Ah man, there goes my morning. Can’t pass up a long review like this
I'm so sorry for your lost time, lol
@@BillySYT good sir it wasn't lost it was a good video
This game is aging like a good wine in my memory. I love the presentation, it is very Metroid but with a unique style and feel.
Also, when playing Metroid prime remaster I started wishing for a more agile set of moves.
A 2 hour video on Metroid Dread from an aspiring TH-cam channel?
Nice. Gonna give this a listen when I'm working tomorrow.
Hope you enjoyed, and thanks for the nice comment!
there was probably a failsafe on itorash that would destroy the rest of the facility taking the rest of zdr with it
I'm not fully done with the video yet, but if i remember it right you can easily beat the enemy that gives you the storm missiles (or a very similar mini boss) with the shine spark - when you get it early.
I think it even one shots it.
edit:
I think the "all teleporters are linked now" isn't a story progression thing, but instead you just have to have used all teleporters or possible teleporter routes.
edit 2:
That screen capture after the end of the last boss fight was probably every Metroid fan ever.
Cheers!
That shine spark puzzle at 1:22.15 frustrates me on the timing every time
This is an excellent video. Glad to see someone giving so much love to Dread!
Gracias, thanks for tuning in!
Super Metroid was one of my first ever video games (I think I started it in 2000 when I was 4 years old 😂) and it has been my basis for all other Metroid games since
Dread looks like it's.going to be super fun once I download it
Also, THANK YOU. We just don't talk about Other M, it doesn't exist
Edit: 999th like :D feels lucky
I was absolutely satisfied by that.
sorry about your very loved little friend. I know the pain. I hope you feel a little better every day!
Crazy to think it's already been almost a year since it happened. We still have two other dogs, but we still miss him from time to time :
You can get the flash shift early as well allowing for another grab sequence against kraid, when at the top of the magnet slide and dashing in his face
Oh... oh.... I'm so sorry to hear about the loss of your doggy. That's always tough.
