Apotheosis - Traveler Journey Symphony | As Noted

  • The 9th and penultimate section of the Traveler Symphony is derived from what is undoubtedly the most crucial (and lucky) single piece of music in my career. Sometimes you just somehow pull it off, and it's difficult to explain how. It just comes together such that I don't really feel I can chalk it up to skill or talent. The notes just sort of appear. My whole life changed on account of this one piece, so hopefully this new version lifts it up with the respect and gratitude I feel on a daily basis.

    This piece of music saved my life. I say that without exaggeration. When I first played Journey in 2013, I was at what was possibly the lowest point of my life. My sister had just passed away, I was not long out of an abusive relationship, I was going through a very severe depressive cycle, and I was bedridden from a total knee reconstruction. I had very little in the way of a support system and I felt more alone and depressed than I ever have. I came very close to taking my own life. In a desperate attempt to distract myself, I picked up a PS4 and a few games. Journey happened to be on sale.
    Hearing this as I first bounded into the clouds with my companion gave me a spark of real, true happiness. It was the first I'd felt in a long time. I remember laughing and crying as I played through that memorable section, and as soon as I'd finished the game I bought the soundtrack and listened to it again and again. The whole soundtrack became an anchor for when I thought despair would swallow me, and I still listen to it when I need comfort today.
    So thank you, Mr. Wintory, for giving me a little light at the end of the tunnel. You may not think it's that remarkable from the inside perspective but it's a big reason I made it, so I think it's incredible. Traveler has allowed me to listen anew all over again almost a decade later. I am forever grateful to you and your wonderful music.

    Apotheosis is one of if not my favorite musical piece ever. A big part of that is its context in the game and how freaking cathartic it made the ending.
    The reworked version is absolutely beautiful and preserved the beauty of the original, yet still feels new.
    You're a great artist, Austin, wish you all the best in life.
    Greetings from Morocco! ❤️

    I was admittedly late to the party when it came to Journey as it has been only a year since I played it, but it has been one of the best games I’ve ever played. And as a lover of things music, it truly transported me along with the incredible art direction. By the end I was left crying by the end of the game and I never thought I’d be able to experience those feelings again. But once again, I did and I’m all the more thankful for it. Thank you Austin Wintory, the LSO and everyone who worked on this, you truly have made in every sense of the word, art

    I’ve been thinking about commenting about how much Journey changed my life ever since I saw it in a TIME magazine my parents had left laying around ten years ago, but it’s almost impossible to put into words, let alone within the confines of a TH-cam comment. In many ways, life is a journey of journeys, and encapsulating that feeling in a singular piece of media is one of the most profound things that I have ever had the privilege of witnessing. There has been much praise for both Journey and your later work, Austin, but I will forever be immensely grateful for this score that has, without exaggeration, shaped my emotional core so drastically.
    Thank you for the music, Mr. Wintory.

    _Apotheosis_ kept me going through very hard times and looking towards the prize: lauration (university graduation). It was the mountain in 2011 and it was reached in 2018.
    It is my duty now to help those aspiring to reach the summit, as I work in education.

    Over the past year Apotheosis has become my favorite song ever. When Traveler came out I bought it and was listening through it at work, I was so stoked when this one started. Such a beautiful piece!
    Legitimately, Journey and DOOM music were the only things keeping me sane at work sometimes.

    My copy of the Journey Traveller score arrived yesterday, Austin, all the way to Perth Western Australia - what timing!
    As others have essentially said: this is a piece of music that created a pillar in our lives-and these pillars are few between-so, thank you.
    And thank you also for this gift of re-orchestration! I’m so glad your original score still means as much to you as it does all of us :)

    I'm struggling to find the right words for this one... Apotheosis is simply beautiful. A piece that will stand the test of time, without question. The same could easily be said for Journey as a whole. I consider myself very lucky to have experienced this wonderful game, and the music therein. :)

    There are many moments in Journey and its score that give pause. The intro, the long slide down to the shadowlands, the final climb in the snow... but none matched the intensity and feeling of accomplishment and freedom that the Apotheosis gave. The triumphant nature of meeting your goal, supported by the allies you freed along the way. The feeling of overcoming what appears to be the ultimate threat to your destiny, death, only to rise and find a place of peace and harmony, and then finally finding what you've longed for since you set foot in the sand the first time...
    I say it in almost all your videos but thank you so much for the mutlltilayered emotional adventure you helped us all through with your genius.

    When I first heard the choral part in the release of this album I teared up massively. I recognized the London Choir’s tenor voices from Abzu which added such a unique element to what was an already beautiful piece. This was sheer perfection! Thank you! 💜💜

    I was always an fps and shooter gamer, some rts and fantasy. This game gave me an experience I wasn't prepared for. I'm not religious in any way but finishing this game with the same partner throughout gave me what I can only describe as my first spiritual experience. And ofcourse, the score was a major component of that experience.

    Any time I find myself frustrated when a piece or project doesn’t just effortlessly flow out of me, I remind myself of your story behind the original Apotheosis - the struggle it was born out of and what it represented to the project. I can safely say it’s helped me keep myself honest in the face of “imposter syndrome” as a composer more than once. The Traveler reimagining is such a beautiful revisiting of this work, For this piece, and all you’ve contributed to my perspective on music and myself as a creative person, Austin - Thank you.

    Occasionally I will sit someone down with my high end headphones, and just force them to listen to a few tracks. Apotheosis from journey was always one that I gravitated to, but once traveler released this version has taken place. It goes so many places so well, really just a phenomenal piece of music. You say it was luck, I think that you just happen to really know what this moment needed, and I think once again you have delivered.

    Wow... I was just trying to follow along with like, the Shaker section in the middle at 2:25, thinking "Hey, yeah, I can do THIS part! XD" Aaaaand then the triplets came in... And then they didn't stop! :O Which just puts me in awe of the PHYSICAL work one has to put in to be a professional musician. Huge props to everyone who worked on this, and thank YOU for putting it out there in Musical Subtitled form! I just get so much more out of being able to read along. :)

    • @awintory
      @awintory  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Funny story: the shaker was the ONLY instance of "striping" we did in the whole album (where you record certain aspects on their own, for better mix control). The room was so very bright and live, that my engineer Jake Jackson suggested we track shaker alone, then the ENTIRE rest of the orchestra on a second pass to ensure the shaker doesn't stick out too much. So the percussionist did a single take, unbroken for the whole 3-4 minutes while all 90 of his peers listened. After a single perfect take, he rested and the remainder of the orchestra tracked the rest.

    As a violist, thank you for the rare shot at the melody. Our gamer symphony orchestra (Des Moines) performed VGOScore's arrangement for one of our concerts last year, and my only regret is that the acoustics didn't lend themselves super well to the intricacies of the piece. It was still a joy to play though, and really felt full circle after experiencing the game for the first time almost ten years beforehand.

    God blessed you with this piece so that you can fill our hearts with Joy. Note: When you introduced this delay at (3:08) to what I call the GRAND ENTRANCE at (3:27), you should have rewarded us with a more explosive grand entrance... but you made up for it at 3:49 (don't know music so I can't explain it better) nvtl, this piece is so beautiful.

    What's kinda of a small buffer for me personally about this score is that the tune that plays as you launch up to above the clouds isn't before the main theme of this part. It's a freakishly awesome rendition of it still though.

    I've been scratching my head for years on what sound is made at 3:48 (except in the OST...this th-cam.com/video/ypNgvc6c6Cc/w-d-xo.html ). It sounds like a bell with a wah effect. Is that a real instrument or something synthed? Please put my mind at ease on how this was done! It really makes the song for me.

    • @awintory
      @awintory  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's a plate bell! Basically a gigantic hanging piece of metal tuned to a specific pitch. Had them in both the original and the new version! Notice it says tubular bells + plate bell (in small print above the note) in the score at the timecode you linked ;)

    What is the significance of (Baunsuri) at 1:54? Is that some instrument, or referring to a player like Tina?
    Edit: and then 5:30 has (Xiao) over the staff as well.

    I don't know much about sheet music. How come the key signature doesn't have anything, but theres many accidentals?

    • @awintory
      @awintory  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      In general, in session environments, key signatures are more distracting than accidentals. It's better for a musician who is having to rapidly learn new music to know what the note is without having to retain separate key information. I also find it more intuitive, as my music rarely slots into keys without requiring accidentals anyway!
