This is a beautiful game Geebz. No text, no dialogue. Very ethereal experience with one of the most beautiful soundtracks ever produced for this medium. Give it a shot!

In a grand world full of violence and heavy emotion Journey set forth to invoke a sense of adventure and wonder. No other game has created within me a sense of pure partnership that I felt when I ran across someone else while playing. Somehow we all knew the language of Journey and sought to complete sessions together rather than alone. That connection with those players anywhere in the world has sat with me since the game first released. Amazing, truly, how emotional I and others felt when you finally crossed that line up there in the mountain, only to be reborn again, alone, amongst a sea of sand, ready to Journey once again.
@@zeddzorender6983 I'd even highly recommend it to people who don't normally play video games. It's very easy to play and at no point is it ever that difficult, which means p much anyone can play through it, regardless of skill level.
Even their previous games Flow and Flower are still worth checking out. ❤

14:10 Unreal that you absolutely nailed it with "coming to a mountaintop." The goal in Journey is to reach the top of a mountain shown to you throughout the game. Apotheosis is the score for the final section, as you reach that top.
Journey is a genuine masterwork, and I am obligated to implore you to try playing it yourself. The controls and gameplay are very simple and the game only takes a couple hours to finish. Ask your daughter to set you up sometime, shut the rest of the world out for a moment and dive in. I really think you'd love it.
I swear, every single time i hear the opening notes of this song, i'm already crying. Can you be traimatized, but in a positive way? Completely unique experience, i've never encountered anything quite like it
Journey was the first game I played that literally had me out of breath, ugly sobbing at the end...and that was in solo play. When I finished with the companion I had met in the 2nd level I literally thought I was never going to recover. Something in this game reached far down and touched a very deep spot in my soul, I can't explain it, it still touches that spot every time I hear it. Beautiful.
I remember the first time I had a companion who drew half of a heart in the snow at the end…god what a game

First videogame score to ever be nominated in the multimedia score category at the Grammy’s, by the way! (If you haven’t already you should react to Baba Yetu by Christopher Tin, theme from Civilization IV, first videogame music nominated for any Grammy!) Anyway, thank you for reacting to Journey! Apotheosis was a great track choice! Wintory has said it was the most difficult part of the score to complete and “get right”. It totally paid off.
I also highly recommend MayTree’s a cappella covers, including Baba Yetu!
Speaking of Civilization, trying out Sogno di Volare from Civ VI would be great too!
I like how you describe the strings as guiding you through the track when in game you are literally being guided by ribbons through beautiful scenery before "coming to a mountaintop". I think that goes to show how great of a job the composer did when interpreting the story and gameplay into the music.
Holy crap. It's been years since I've played this game, but the memories, emotions and relationships I developed in Journey just flooded back to me just listening to this. No "words" were ever said, but I still remember the moments of walking, gliding, sliding through the sand and snow with the people I met a long the way.
And me, the intense feeling of guilt as I accidentally caused my nameless, voiceless companion to lose his glowy banner :( How can we get so deep with nothing but a faceless little guy and some chirps?
@@Liquessen It is the lack of faces or words that makes it easier to connect. Too much we see our differences. When playing the game with someone, what ever happened in each of your lives to be there in that moment can be incredibly different but yet you're together going though this journey. That is all you really need.
The climactic part of this piece has made me cry every time I have ever listened to it. The strings swelling into that high note just wrings the tears out of me. Absolutely divine. The end of this game is beautiful. I remember my first time getting there and hearing this, right after the saddest moment of the story, the hope that swells up as the music builds left my jaw hanging open and I was playing the game through misty eyes.

Can't believe this game is 10 years old now. Absolutely wonderful and reignited debate if video games is art. This game absolutely is. Nominated for a grammy in 2012. Robbed when the academty selected girl with the dragon tatoo instead of this. People have cried to this game cause it was so painful and joyful which a movie didn't do. In the game, this is the last song that plays in final stage in which each part is dynamily synced to what is happening in game. You are indeed climbing a beautiful mountain...on your way to the afterlife...
Austin Winter recently released an Album with a reimagined version of Journey recorded with the London Symphony Orchestra. Traveler, a Journey Symphony, it is available on YT on his channel. You should definitely give it a try. 😄

This is one of my first memories of starting gaming a few years ago. The end credits to Journey is a beautiful song playing while showing the areas you travelled through and the names of the people that made the game. Even the thought of it brings tears to my eyes now. It was so beautiful. I think it was the first game I fully completed and saw the credits and it felt amazing and fitting to give those hard working people credit for creating such an amazing experience. It probably sounds silly to non gamers lol. Game music means so much to me

This was the first video game I ever cried during and the soundtrack was such a huge part of that. I adore this song. Fun fact! The cellist is Tina Guo.
I actually once had the good fortune to listen to this sound track live! There was a showing at a nearby college where they had a full orchestra playing the audio. While someone played the videogame projected on a screen. I still keep the CD in my car to this day and give it a listen every once and a while. Probably one of the most powerful musical events in my life.
One of my favorite experiences in a video game is meeting another player in Journey. There is no way to communicate in words or text, but we were dancing and playing together for around 30 minutes. It was kinda poignant and sad moving away on my own again.

It's not a game that will exclude you by any gaming skill, it looks and sounds wonderful, and I reckon your daughter would enjoy teaching you
Absolutely love this track and game.
To put this track into perspective this plays during the climax of the game, right after the most dire point of the game tonally speaking. It really hits extremely hard assuming you've been playing alongside another player struggling to make it through the journey together. This is one of the few games i'd actually call artistic in a serious way without it being a pretentious conscious attempt at art. It's filled with symbolic meaning, truly great.
The track provides a victorious, adventurous release over the hardship the characters experience through the game. Coming from a dead, frozen wasteland and suddenly soaring through blue skies and mountains.
Man, you expressed that so perfectly. This game is probably the most perfect example of what you can refer to as "art" for a video game. It wasn't super forthcoming with it, they weren't obnoxious, they didn't lecture you with anything, there was no exposition, nothing. It was just all "show don't tell". The music was just as important as the gameplay. They both compliment and depend on eachother. I've never seem a game like that, to this day.
@@ImSlipped Yeah there's very few games like this to my knowledge. I suppose Abzu is the same to some extent but it somehow doesn't have the same implied narrative and weight to carry it. It's been a long while since i played that though.
@@scrim6398 Yeah. I played Abzu years ago. Bought it because of this game. I liked it for what it was and the soundtrack and visuals were still very beautiful but they still didn't hold a candle to Journey. There's just something about this game that was so perfect, like a once in a lifetime, perfect combination of something. Everything just came together and it became more than the creators ever anticipated it would be. Every now and again you get one of those creations where everything just works so well together and becomes something so totally unique. I don't think Journey is the greatest game ever made, not even close, but it is truly one of a kind and there will NEVER be anything like it and the gaming industry is better as a result of that.
The music in this game truly is in concert (pun intended) with the gameplay. They are intrinsically linked such that when you experience them together, it's hard to imagine one without the other. When listening to this again, I am brought back in my mind to the experience for which it is scored. And I played this game 10 years ago.
I agree about that game being art
but there are also other games such as ori and the blind forest\will of the wisps , kena bridge of spirits , the ascent and many others that I think also fit to this category .
yes video games are entertaining and has gameplay to them but it is possible to make them artistic master pieces as well.
When the ostinatos kicked in, I started crying. This moment in the game had more impact on me than any other I'd ever experience up to this point. I still can't even listen to the piece without tearing up just a little. Cool to see you react to this one! Wintory is absolutely on the top of the pile of my favorite composers from the past 20 years.

The very first experience I had with Journey was truly magical. It was... due to bad internet, it actually turned a really intense moment into something extremely tragic but also encouraging. I just... man. This game is an *experience*
The ending of this game wrecked me in the best way possible. Beautiful experience - highly recommend the OST from a game that also made me feel this way - "Gris".
The Game Journey is a very Tactile game you don't just play through, but you also Live through. The music, the sound effects, and visuals seem to exist purely to just be experienced for no other reason but to do it because you want to. Similar to how people IRL like going on a hike, standing on a hill, taking in the breeze, and waving hello to a stranger. Interactions often times seem so genuine it makes you question if the you've found another player.
What's best of all perhaps is that *Anyone* can pick this up and play it. I wouldn't be suprised if someone's Bird can play it. Just like its namesake, it's not about the destination, but the Journey.
Great choice Geebz. Austin Wintory's soundtrack is absolutely incredible. You should play Journey with your daughter. It's such a unique experience, and a very very touching one when you figure out what's going on. I definitely cried at the end when it all sunk in. It was such an incredible experience. Your commentary on the impact of the soundtrack on the game experience is 100% on point. Songs like this one in Journey really are just as much of a character as any other. It gives you chills when it brings back the memories of the experience. All of the emotion flows through, and really is what Journey excelled at.
I did cry too, at the same point. Journey was such a unique experience, and I will never forget it, it was the first game I played (on my boyfriend's PS4) and I didn't know much about games and playing online. At one point in the game, I saw a figure that was just like me, we did a whole "level" together helping each other and I thought it was part of the plot, I didn't know you could meet another player online. When my boyfriend told me it was a real person playing with me somewhere in the world it was even more beautiful, because it felt so natural and poetic I really thought it was part of the storyline.
Journey will remain in my heart forever as one of the most poetic games I ever played

I'm in tears, thank you for bringing that song back into my mind. This song is the perfect ending to that very emotional journey you're having in this game. Memories are coming back from when I played it for the first time, having that twist at the beginning of that section and the extiting to your destination with your random partner you've met along the way.

Austin Wintory is a LEGEND. I would absolutely recommend doing a longer video on the entire Journey OST. It's a very cohesive experience with a lot of internal references throughout. Apotheosis, for instance, while beautiful in its own right, is quite a different experience once you've heard everything leading up to it.
I'd also suggest you try out the game itself. It's very beautiful, quite short, and at this point not very expensive either.

I highly HIGHLY suggest everyone play this game. It's not difficult at all and it's pretty short (about 2-3 hours) so anyone can pick it up. It's an amazing experience
speaking of cello, I just finished Cyberpunk 2077(huge game, with great ambient music plus a whole host of original in-game radio songs, you even get to play as Keanu Reeves' character performing a gig), and the end section has an electric cello bit with a strong emotional pull and feeling of anxiety, as it is for a time where you make a very big decision in the game (100hrs of play time for me). Great piece that stood out.
I believe it is played by Tina Guo, who did the Wonder Woman theme with Hans Zimmer, and I think she will feature on the next Kamelot album! you need to get back to them too.

My mother (about 80 years old, who has never ever had any interest in computer games whatsoever) sat down next to me and watched it with me to the end. I would never imagined such a thing to happen. Certainly the soundtrack did play its part.

Normally games like this aren't my cup of tea, but this one really captured me and what it means to start a journey. I just played through it in one sitting. Definitely give this game a try, i think you would like it.
The music is effected by what you do in the game as well. It's very neat and this part of the game always makes me cry.
The same people who made Journey have a whole range of really awesome artistic games in the same vein and the soundtracks are always on point. Wintory’s work with Journey is great at pulling all the emotion together from the story playing out on screen. I would recommend taking a look at Sky: Children of the Light’s soundtrack which was composed by Vincent Diamante.: “Waltzing in the Rain”, “Before a Fall”, “An Upwards Dance”, and “The Flight”

This song moves me to tears every single time I hear it. I remember finishing the game in an evening and there was something so... cathartic about it. I think I cried for nearly an hour after; just my soul emptying itself out. This song is so stunning and powerful.

Listen to some selections from Hollow Knight! City Of Tears is probably my fave, but I’d also gladly accept Dirtmouth, Reflection, Resting Grounds, Forgotten Crossroads (I nearly forgot!), Greenpath, Kingdom’s Edge, Queen’s Gardens, White Palace, Hornet, etc.! The sequel is finally coming out very soon!
And Fungal Wastes, and Mantis Lords.

God, I get choked up every time I hear this. Watch a "film version" of Journey on youtube. It hits like a ton of bricks.
This, more than any other video game soundtrack, I can picture what's happening in the game by just listening to it. Especially when you combine it with the visuals and gameplay, I think this is one of the most impactful OSTs of all time

My brother recommended this and Flower to me and the first thing that immediately overwhelmed me while playing the game was just the breathtaking nature of the music is. Without dialogue, the ability of the music to provide and control the emotion of specific moments in the game is staggering. This is my favorite game of all time.
Journey, the best I've ever played from an independent studio. This game is just poetry.
The cello solo at 11:46 is the main theme of the whole score, almost as if it was a concerto. It's the first thing you hear in the game, it reappears several times throughout, then comes back at the very end.
Just happened to see this in my feed - reminded me of when I was working as a mold & cast tech - back in 2012ish our studio created the molds for the limited edition figurines from this game - some of the collectors out there would recognize the red traveler with the white floating beside it - ngl the molds for the scarves were kind of a pain in the ass - but it was fun - led to me doing a limited run for the Entwined bird in 2014 - good times 😁

Apotheosis, it's in Greek. It means to experience a form of deification, to transcend your humanity into a higher state of being, basically become an immortal entity. It's such a wonderful, enchanting piece if you think about it in this particular, metaphysical framework. This soundtrack also unveils some kind of beautiful, melancholic dramatism. Especially with how it plays with tension and long, ambient-like parts. And that last part, damn it. This cello grabs me by the throat every time.

Journey is one of my favorite games of all time. I'm so glad other people are checking it out.
If you have any free time I'd recommend taking like 2-3 hours out of your day to play it. It's the only game I know that I could recommend everyone should play.

Yet another fantastic reaction and fantastic song! Thank you for rejogging my memory of this game and it's beautiful soundtrack, such a peaceful and surreal experience playing through it. To add to my comment in regards to the Battlefield 1 OST on one of your other recent videos, the track 'The Flight Of The Pigeon' is the one that is most impactful to me. Being short at 1:43 in length, yet it still highlights the futile hope and sadness of the first world war, especially while it plays over the related scene in the game. Spoilers ahead if you haven't played it...
You have played as part of a British crew manning a tank throughout the mission, until you get stuck in deep mud. Surrounded on all sides and as a last resort, the commander releases a messenger pigeon with the coordinates of the tank attached, so friendly artillery can bombard your position to either save you or seal your fate. As the pigeon leaves the tank and flies up this track begins to play, as you take control of the pigeon and fly over the previously traversed battlefield with bombs and flighting continuing below, it feels just out of reach and almost otherworldly in stark comparison to the majestic and beautiful nature of the pigeon as it effortlessly traverses the skies. It was personally quite an impactful scene that left me thinking about it long after finishing the game to this day.
Love to see this game is still getting love after 10+ years.
This game and its music is wonderful. I would also recommend the game Gris, both the game and its music are worth checking, and in a similar vibe to journey.

Your interpretations are spot-on, and I hope you get a chance to experience the game some day! The music still brings tears to my eyes. On its own, it's exquisite. But in context, in the game, it's absolutely sublime, unforgettable. One of the most impactful gaming experiences I've ever had.
For something different but equally special, may I suggest the track "Wilderness" from the Diablo 2 OST by Matt Uelman? It's deeply atmospheric, dark and brooding and ethereal, with fascinating instrumentation, blending elements of folk, contemporary, and strings. The percussion, in particular, stands out. There's nothing else quite like it, and I think you'd really enjoy it!

Journey is a brilliant game, where multiplayer mechanically does very little, yet is thematically brilliant. Austin Wintery's score is fantastically linked to your actions. Whenever with argument that argument that video games aren't art comes up I hold up Journey like a beacon.
Context is everything. I'll only say this for nongamers... If you're not bawling at the peak violin crescendo of this piece you are missing out
I miss games like journey, a video game, that's more art then it is a game, I miss those type of games.
This song gave me MASSIVE chills when i played the game. The combination of image to music is very strong in that one, emotionally. You gotta listen to it in context, even if you dont play the game, just watch a gameplay video of the part where the song comes in, its just absolutely perfect. Just to give you an idea of the scene : There is this latent hope for floating up and elevating yourself in the air throughout this whole game. You climbing a mountain and you get exhausted, in the cold snow. But then suddenly, ribbons of energy appears and allow you to fly over them in a very fast pace and you basically sprint fly to the top of the mountain. The sun shines bright after your trek through the snowstorm. Obviously, towards the ending of the game.

"The Last Of Us" part 1 and 2 are my favourite games of all time, apart from The Witcher 3 ( one of the soundtracks which you already covered, even though there are a lot of awesome soundtracks in that game 😂) it would be really cool if you would do a video related to "The Last Of Us" the soundtracks in part 1 and 2 are really powerful and heartbreaking. I regularly watch a podcast that the composer of this, Austin Wintory is on. I bet he'd love to see this video just to hear how close you get to what he might have been going for.
I recommended this once a while ago, but I do want to mention Metroid Prime again. Possibly my favorite game of all time, the soundtrack is permanently etched into my brain. The tracks that play in each area of the world are very atmospheric and only a few minutes that play on a loop. I think a good video would be to do a few of them and try to guess the theme or environment that each track was made for.

The last track in the game before the credits! "Apotheosis" is a fancy way of saying the climax or culmination of a story. Journey is, at its core, an adaptation of Joseph Campbell's model of the Hero's Journey. So its soundtrack is, more or less, all named after the different steps of that journey.
Thank you for bringing VG-OST to new audiences and bringing great perspectives. Even the music is a Journey! The first song in this album is Nascence (def. coming into existance) and ends with Apotheosis (def. highest point in development or culmination). For me the lead up that opens up into the bells is what gets me :)

Honestly, Journey is best to go into blind. It's something that should be experienced more than watched. It's gorgeous and the gameplay itself brought me to tears.
Apotheosis is the culmination of everything that came before, aptly named, and uses the leitmotif of the game (I Was Born For This) as the very first and last melody you hear. THIS is the song that made me cry, when coupled with the gorgeous gameplay, and the ENDING. You say anxiety, but this was pure freedom. Melancholy freedom. This is what you strove for, this is what you were born for, and this is how it all ends.
I would love, love to see you so a reaction to The Sealed Vessel from the Hollow Knight soundtrack.
As for the Journey soundtrack, pretty much moves me to tears every time I hear it. The game itself also made me cry. It's so incredibly beautiful.

Oh, by the way since it's distantly related to Journey actually, have you listened to the artist Aurora? She did a beautiful concert in Sky Children (a game of similar nature made by the same creators but more social!) and the way the songs have an intro and outro to make the concert one smooth auditory experience... and there's a visual interactive aspect as well! I personally saw it through a youtuber's video, Gab Smolders', but it had to have been amazing to be there. I believe there's a video of the concert with no commentary in case you ever want to experience it that way- auditorily or (almost) entirely
To put this track into perspective, there are two things you must know; first, this track plays near the very end of the game, right after you have overcome possibly the most difficult section of the game from an emotional standpoint.
Second, "apotheosis" is a word that is very unique. It is a verb meaning "the process by which mortals ascend and achieve godhood." More generally, it can mean the zenith or climax, but "apotheosis" has a connotation beyond that generalized meaning. In fact, I would argue that the specific meaning of ascension to godhood is absolutely apropos for the part of the game this plays in.
It's amazingly poignant, and even all these years later, it is a bittersweet track that bring a smile to my face while at the same time trying to pull tears from me.

And the music is amazing, that fit perfectly with the images but it has his own beauty that lives independently

I know this comment is a year late, but it's interesting hearing your takes on this. This song (without spoilers) plays after an incredible struggle - sometimes alone but occasionally with another if you run into someone else during your play. You've become free, and you and your potential friend chase each other up the final part of the mountain. The repeated pattern and the response from the low end feels a lot like the two players.
My youth orchestra performed this piece, and I was first chair Viola, the arraignment had a solo for the part. I had came very close to the song and was drawn in and I still get chills today from it
One of my favorite soundtracks and games ever. Even now I feel at least a little uplifted whenever I listen to it, but I just think it's neat to hear other music professionals' input on it.
On the subject of the power of strings (though more melancholy): if you are open to suggestions, may I suggest "The End ～ Fairy Round Table Domain: Oberon-Vortigern" from Fate/Grand Order? It's a "final boss" battle theme for a chapter in the game, so it's appropriately intense, but the mix of strings, piano, vocals, and drums also greatly imply a sense of tragedy for both the title character and the story that led up to this fight. It's an incredible track for what is technically a simple mobile game.
It'd be cool to see you talk to Austin Wintory, like you did with Marty O'Donnell, since he's also been in the videogame industry for a long time and has some interesting stories. Also just a cool guy.

there's no instrument quite like the cello. I watched a masterclass with Benjamin Zander where he was teaching a young cellist. In it, Zander stated that the cello is the only instrument that is able to replicate the soft sound of a human sigh. The opening cello soloist does a phenomenal job with their interpretation in my opinion. I play violin but I've always been jealous of my cellist friends...maybe one day I will learn.
Love love this game and this track is by far my favorite. It’s the first game soundtrack to ever be nominated for a Grammy too (I’m sure others have mentioned this). Wintory also recently released a rearranged version of the album with I believe the London Symphony Orchestra. There’s some minute differences but I highly recommend it as well
