R&D agents are super nerfed from where they used to be long ago unfortunately. However, a nice side benefit of the corp standings needed to unlock the agents is the loyalty points store offers Nexus chips for faction ships that can be valuable if you mission for them.
Now that you mention it, i might have one character that had an RnD agent on it. I should check on it. CCP is actually leaving content (and "performance" - ie. user engagement) on the table with these agents. If I remember correctly you could boost the RP received by 100% if you did a mission a day for them. Don't know if that is still a thing. You should try and take a look at it.
Wish i had known about the T2 stuff when i started playing in 2003, i have one agent that i remember to grab the cores from at times, but i do a lot of industry so i just toss them in my pile and use them for invention.
Just started to look into this myself. The profit is less today, 80k per day per agent, that's about 150m per year with 5 agents. The skills you can get fast with skill injectors and the random SP bonus, faster if you are already SP farming. The upfront cost of skill books means they won't pay for themselves for about 6 months or so, and that doesn't factor in the time or isk used to get the training. My goal is anything in industry so they may pay back sooner if I can get that all going, which is more time/isk investment. The standings required is fast if you run distribution missions, took me about a day to get the Navy level 4, just have to run them now for the R&D corp. I've had maxed out Social skills to help with this. I do wish I got into it back in 2011 when I started, no regrets though. I'm not sure if I want to invest the time into my alts but I have a second account with a main that has high skills and standings so 2 characters could be doing this. In the end if I don't like it I can extract the skills and get some of my isk back. I'm going to check out some of your other videos see what you've been upto for 2 years.
It's definitely not one of the primary sources of cores or income, that's true. However if you have the time to spare to get the better agents, given that it's entirely passive background income and cores once they get going, if you're doing invention it's a nice little thing to have where you just go at the end of the month to collect the cores, and knock a chunk off your datacores bill.
I have a few Level 4 research agents going. I could be wrong, but I don't recall having to run any Level 4 missions to get them started. After about a 1 yr gap, I just picked some cores up recently, and definitely didn't have to run any missions before or after. There is still the skill hit and the travel time, but that's about it AFAIK (you do need the appropriate Science skills, too, not just Research Project Management).
You actually did miss out on them, these were highly profitable back in the day, whole datacore farms were set up. The standing grinding was just a whole lot of work to do it for multiple characters, but there are services that were paid handsomely for the standing grind. I still have a couple of characters that have been accumulating datacores for years. It's sometimes worth it to just sell them after you've taken a break for a couple of years... What a lot of folks also forget, where are the agents located, and you need to move the cores to market safely.
Something worth keeping in mind is that as bad as they are for making money, the most important factors for them include agent level and your science specialty, and the absolute cap is around 125 RP/day assuming perfect agent standing and negotiation skills. It's not enough to really be worth it, but if people are hellbent on trying it, this advice might prove useful to them.
Thx for making this great Video and preventing me from grinding it^^ out of interest how long do you think would it take to grind it or is it even possible to buy the standing through tags etc so then the return would be interesting... maybe the same like t2 bpos...?
Have literally just finished grinding these. If you stick to one npc corp you can grind the standings in a few days plus a week ish to learn the skills. It's not worth doing it as a regular isk earner. However, if you leave them for a year or more you can earn a fair bit or use the cores for your own research. Bear in mind that you have to reset the agent every time your skill level or agent level increase.
@@deftsquirrel6738 thx for your insight:) what does a few days mean translated into total hours? Because some play 18h a day and some only one or two hours like me xD
@@mctobi2921 you only need to grind until lvl4. Personally, I ran 2 accounts simultaneously doing distribution missions. They are dead simple and require very little effort so you can watch TV/TH-cam wile your doing it. I did them for an hour or so a day. Concentrate on npc corps Core Complexion or Lai Dai as they both have 5 level 4 research agents. Hope this helps.
I was planning to use a skill extractor, and remove all the research sp, but I'd only be able to sell it once full because injectors are pretty useless at my SP level. Though I can almost guarantee they do some crazy buff that makes them good as soon as I do it. Hahaha.
I know you are only theory crafting as you have not cashed the datacores in, perhaps before your time, but datacores were free to redeem it just cost the research points, when they were nerf'd they stopped them accumulating unless you were subbed, and they brought in the price per datacore when redeemed, when all they cost was research points it seemed a fair trade for the time spent grinding standings and the science skills (not cheap books) they now are so cheap from faction warfare the market is pants, they don't sell well, people buy them in small amounts as and when they are inventing. I do agree they are poor value when you add up all the grind for standings, books and cost when redeeming,

I'd say yes, worth it if you have nothing else to do or play episodically. It's 99% passive income, not much ISK to get from it, but not much still better than nothing, right? Right? :)
@@MyKharli if you have plexed your account anyway for example, and thats another source of total passive income like skillpoints itself .... so that does indes stack up if your already trained up for example
Yeah, I haven't bothered with R&D agents but if I had standing with their corps already I'd do some missions to start getting the passive RP income, just running in the background to be forgotten about and then remembered one day for a little pile of isk; a pile of say 200mil worth of datacores after a few years isn't much, but on the day I go to collect it'd be a lot more than nothing =)
@@mastakazam5094 Exactly! When I returned to the game after a long break I've got 300 mils from R&D agents and it was pretty helpful to start some trading shenanigans (I was quite poor at that time).
Thanks for the input. I was thinking about doing R&D missions for the passive income. Now I know this, I'm probably not doing them.
