- STORY TIME! There was once a twelve year old Mason being the innocent human he's always been, on his way to go pick up the highly anticipated game Super Mario Galaxy 2, way back in the day. What conflict ensues from doing this? Check out my story about the time GameStop thought I stole a Nintendo game!

Lol as someone who works for GameStop. The policy does state that we can't take in sealed games, but anyone with a brain can tell whether or not the person who either brought in 5 sealed copies of the same game or just 1 game they probably got for christmas and didn't have a reason to open it, SHOULD KNOW what might look like theft. I always just tell people to go outside and bring it back "pre-owned" STUPID GAMESTOP IS STUPID.

Honestly, I do not buy or go to GameStop, as I would rather buy my games from Toys R Us or Best Buy, and yes, they have Switch games. I have heard more stories like this before this one about GameStop, and I will never buy a game there. I have walked into GameStop once and not bought anything, looking for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe but them being out of stock because of Christmas.
I was told to do the same thing with a sealed copy of some game when I was a youngster. It's a hassle, but I'm glad they allowed me to do it. Those guys are the ones that will keep me as a customer, even if I don't buy that many games these days cause of my job/family.

Moral of the Story:If you steal a game and try to trade it in for cash or credit, make sure you take the seal off first.

Reason for this is because then if you did in fact steal it, you are fully reliable for the original cost of the product due to it was sealed. Regardless of what it's worth now.

Someone thought I stole a Nintendo switch once last year. I walked into my local Walmart and bought a Nintendo switch so if you go to Walmart you know that they ask to see your receipt before you walk out. I put my receipt in my pocket and when I said I would show it to him, it was gone. Then I said I will be right back. So I looked around the place and traced my footsteps. I found the receipt and when I went back up to the man, he said, this is not your receipt! And then I was so triggered that I asked the manager who I was with in the checkout isle and she said to him that I bought it. THEN I was FINALLY about to go out and play my Nintendo switch!

You aren't legally required to show them your receipt. They can't stop you from leaving, since you've already paid for your stuff. You're allowed to walk right past them.

This is why I never trust gamestop with these stupid policies and I bought Star Fox for the snes there and it doesn’t even work
yeah something similar happened to me, I bought cod black ops 2 and the dude looked at like 5 scratched copies before giving me a copy and when I got home the game had all kinds of scratches and fingerprints. I was kinda pissed but I said whatever and cleaned it. well if I tried booting up multiplayer the game would freeze so I returned it for a new one and that one freezes during a certain cutscene in the campaign which annoys me but it's been 2 months since I got the game so I can't just return it for another one

The game was heavily scratched, it could only play for a minute before crashing.
How is having a policy that protects them from second hand dealer laws the same as you buying a game that doesn't work?
Maybe it's the same because you're too much of a dumbass to understand store policies are there for a reason.
You don't trust gamestop bc 95% of sealed games that are brought in to trade are stolen and so they have a policy to not accept sealed games?
How about they accept sealed games and they resell them sealed only for you to find out when you get home that it's empty.... You return it and gamestop says "well we sold it to you sealed and since we accepted the trade in sealed, we never really knew if the game was in there and now its not. So we don't know if it was traded in empty or if you kept the game and are claiming it was empty. We will not be accepting your return. You must deal with the problem now."
I guess then you really wouldn't trust gamestop.
That's a pretty unique story, I've had bad GameStop experiences in the past, but nothing like this. Thank goodness it was all good in the end though :)

TLDR got xmas gift from grandma, already had it, trade wrapped new copy to gamestop, theyre being aholes as usual and end up having his mom get the game.
I actually had this same thing happen to me, and I walked to the front door. Stepped one foot outside with the game, and opened it. Then I walked back inside, and the GA said "Okay I can take it now." It was his idea for me to open it outside. The cameras are constantly beaming to home office, and the GA's don't want to be fired over a silly policy.

I recently went into GameStop to get Payday 2 for the switch, and when they looked at my ID, they thought it was fake and banned me from that store.
This happened to me once, I got a second copy of MK8D and I left it in the gamestop. The dude at the GameStop was really cool and just told me to grab another switch game and that I’ll be set. I grabbed Zelda and havent stopped playing it since

When i was twelve, i was so excited to get this flashing little bike bell for some reason... i just kept hugging it and hugging it.... next thing i know, we were out at the car.... except the cashier forgot to *ring* up my bike bell.... so we noticed and went back in and paid for it.... lol.... not really theft, but i guess it comes close... as close as he did to having stolen a game to trade in.... lol

I remember the commercial/advertisements for this game when it first came out where I live, which was June 11th. I remember when the narrator for it said “Out on the 11th of June” I was so excited. To this day it remains one of my favourite Mario games.

When I was 10 or so my grandma did the same thing except it was for Destroy All Humans 2! They told me no can do since it was sealed so we just went to a different gamestop and they did it for us

When I got my smg2 it was from Walmart the Sunday after it released, I was 8 years old and hella exited, when I unwrapped the game someone stole the disk put a CD rom in the case and then using a shrink wrap machine and returned the game. Lucky wall mart gave me a different copy for free

Short form: he walked in when he was 12 to trade Mario and sonic at the Olympic games for Mario galaxy 2. And since he didn't take the seal off of the case, game stop didn't accept it because they thought he stole it from a different store. In the end his mom talked to the manager and got it for him.

Yep, I remember doing the same thing, my friend got me sonic colors at that time I didn't have an Wii. so decided to do an trade in for Mortal Kombat 9 the guy told me the same thing, I even did the same thing as you ask, "could I take the plastic wrap off" so sadly, I had to pay the rest out of pocket. luckily pre play took it of my hands I think got more there than at Game stop.
I think there's a law that forbids stores from taking in sealed games and that's why GameStop doesn't let people trade in sealed games.
One of my friends who work at gs told me the manager told him to keep an eye on me for stealing a regular high paying customer who nvr stole in his life. Gs claims she would be talked to but she continues to b a nasty witch.

Oh no, let me tell you my story. When I was about 13 I went on a choir trip to Chicago. On the way to Chicago we stop in an Oklahoma strip mall that has a Barnes and Noble. Now I have a few DVDs and a portable DVD player (age before streaming and smartphones), one of these dvds didn't have the anti-theft strip deactivated (we bought the dvd, there was a minor oversight somewhere) so everytime I went in a store like Walmart or Barnes and Noble it would set off the alarms and an employee would check my bags and be like, okay everything's cool but we'll have to check your bag when you leave too. But this Barnes and Noble no one comes to check out why I set off the alarms. So 5 minutes I stand at the door looking for an employee to check out why their allarm goes off. I'm tired and hungry and need to use the restroom so I go buy a peice of cake and use the bathroom. But they have annother alarm at the bathroom, so I go tear out every single anti-theft electronic sticker cause I'm tired of it by then and use the restroom. 20 minutes later the choir trip is heading back to the buss to leave. I get halfway across the parking lot when I'm approached by two police officers who accuse me of stealing from the Barnes and Nobel. I go to grab the dvds from my purse and one of the police grabs his gun. He didn't point it at me but I saw what he was doing and I just threw my bag off me and started crying. Cause I'm 13 years old, innocent, and they're about to shoot me. So me and my dad go back to the Barnes and nobel where they're questioning us like where'd you get these dvds. "Um, my house" they go back and look over the security tapes and tell us to go. Apparently they don't even sell any of the DVDs I had on me and I didn't even go near their DVD section. Which they would know if they had just come talk to me at the front from the beginning instead of just clling the cops on a 13 year old and threatening to shoot her. I refuse to shop at B&N and have a distaste for Oklahoma in general to this day.

What's bad is that gamestop is stupid enough to think that someone could steal a game in 2018 when they're BEHIND LOCKED CASES! Wal-Mart, Target, Best Buy all have cases you have to ask someone to open (at least where I am)

He was just following policy. Usually I just told people "I can't take it sealed, but whatever happens outside the store, well you know." and let them go outside, open the game, then come back inside to trade it in. It's that easy.

My ex had stories of stealing games from sears when he was younger and trading them in at gamestop so dont take it personally

My friend went to a GameStop and saw a black yoshi and he decided hold it. when they were going out of GameStop he still had it in his arms his mom saw and point it out that he still had it so they when back and said what happened but no one got in trouble. And yes true story!

I bought a used version of pokemon platinum from GameStop that wouldn't work. I later tried to return it but GameStop refused to take it calling it a "counterfeit game".
This exact same thing happened to me as a kid with an Xbox 360 headset I got an extra one i didn't need and tried to trade it in and they said they can't take it new so I was like okay can I just open it up and rub it against my ear? And they said no, like wtf how is that not used. So they would literally take broken disc only games (which I got a broken game once) over one just opened two seconds ago

I have a somewhat similar story to share. Millenia ago, when the company that would become GameStop was simply known as Funcoland was, I took my younger cousin in to trade in his original PlayStation. He, like myself, was the type who not only took very good care of his electronics...but also saved the boxes and all of the packaging for the various components. Before we made the trip, he packed everything up in its appropriate plastic and put everything in its place within the box. When we got up to the counter at Funcoland, the employee opened the PlayStation box, took one look at the carefully-repackaged parts, amd pushed it back iny cousin's face and said something to the effect of "We can't take this, it's obviously been stolen".
