Hey Lucy, you're not the only one ! I'm 25, and I started getting harsher depression episodes 10 days before my period around two years ago.. and after I did my research, I figured whats happening to me has a name, which is Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD)

This 100% sounds like PMDD. When you say you feel “wild” that just resonated so much. I feel out of control when in my luteal phase but anyone observing probably would not see much difference- as you say, can’t sleep, can’t eat, severely depressed, high anxiety, lots of crying and then a period of mania. All things which are very out of the ordinary for me. Unfortunately it seems the pill and antidepressants are the only real way to help from a medical point of view. I don’t personally find that any “natural” factors (I.e. exercise, diet, socialisation) actually help at all. Hope you can find some respite in a diagnosis.

I have also been diagnosed with PMDD after six years of experiencing symptoms. I would have considered my cycle and my mood relatively normal until about age 21/22 and then I experienced a negative shift until it became a regular thing each month. Super dark headspace, feeling "chaotic" etc. However, after going on the pill for the first time last year, it was a game changer. That is not to say that is the solution for everyone but just wanted to add my experience.

One thing you could do in the hallway is take down the hooks for the coats and put a little free standing wardrobe there instead (maybe a cool charity shop/up cycled one?) That way you can hide the coats and it not look quite as full as soon as you walk in the door. Depending on what you get, you could get a little shoe tray under it or a bag for shopping bags.

A lot of folks are suggesting PMDD and I think that’s definitely something you should research and take to your health care providers, but I want to make a note of the “positive effects” you mentioned. they sound like common symptoms of manic/hypomanic episodes that could be related to psychiatric disorders like bipolar disorders. when someone has PMDD and a Bipolar disorder, the comorbidity can cause manic episodes during hormonal shifts. (also, going on birth control can be part of a long term treatment plan for some people with PMDD, not just a band-aid!) good luck on your journey to find medical help, the system is often a shit show unfortunately 😓

Your talk about coffee getting you through your day really hit me haha. I gave it up for Lent partially because I could feel myself getting addicted, but boy has it been hard! I didn't realize how much I had become dependent on it as a busy college student, using it to help me make it through the day. Now I am constantly dragging and never quite feel fully awake or alert. I just know I'll be glad when Easter comes around so I can have it again!

I have had the same symptoms as you Lucy! I felt like I was going crazy because my thoughts did a full 180 and went into very dark places that scared me. My boyfriend also noticed it massively and struggled being around me because I would get quite unreasonable and say things that he didn’t know how to react to. I went to the doctor and their solution was to put me in hormonal birth control through a spiral. To be fair, it has gone away since I had the spiral inserted, but as you said, it’s just a bandaid. If you get any more information I would love an update to hear more about it! I thought I was the only one too, so you just took a huge weight off my shoulders 😅 It’s clearly got something to do with hormones, but there is no way that it’s normal to just accept it!

  • @ronjahaberfelner

Hey Lucy, your hormonal story really hit home for me. I have a coming-off the pill story myself and what has helped me massively ist hormonal yoga. You baically stimulate your endocrine glands through movement and breath. After doing it the first time I felt this energy shift going through the body. It might be good alternative to just try out, maybe you can find a teacher near you in london or online (I'd be available too haha). All the best to you, I resonate with that feeling and state of mind & body so much and know how hard it is to believe in a solution.

Hi Lucy! 🇧🇷. When it comes to period and all the bad symptoms that one can experience, I have experienced all the bad things that you have mentioned in this video! But in my case, my anxiety played an important role in making me feel very ill monthly. I beared the bad symptoms within myself for years, but it was my 30th anniversary in January of this year and I decided to see a psychiatrist to end this madly horrible period stuff, and now I've been taking amazing capsules to treat my anxiety disorder. The capsules are the minimum dosage and I feel completely normal and amazing 100% of the time. The best thing about my treatment is that I don't feel extremely nauseous anymore.

Also I don't really have the same issues with my hormones but I have been going though it the past year with feeling the ups and downs of my cycle so strongly so I feel you and it's so fustrating to feel like nobody has the answers you need. I hope you figure it all out soon!

It definitely sounds like (PMDD) Premenstrual dysphoric disorder. The insanity part- which is just you identifying, hey this isn't me?! I'm not on birth control either and I went through a rough two years with this. I moved and the last year or so is better so I guess stress and lifestyle could be contributing. I also started going to therapy. It's definitely hormonal so all of that lifestyle stuff aside cutting dairy, being mindful of micro plastics which can be endocrine disruptors and drinking more calm lavender based tea has made a tremendous change for me. Although I can say some months can be worse than others. Hang in there. You aren’t alone. ❤❤

This feeling in the run up to ovulation is 100% a thing more people experience. I too have noticed feeling extremely chaotic/restless/wired/'crazy' or anyway a rather unpleasant energy vibe in the days before I ovulate. I am in the process of figuring it out and as far as I can understand it could be excess oestrogen. Have you read Period Power by Maisie Hill? There is a section about it in there. Channelling your energy into excercise and moving a lot could work apparently because it makes you 'sweat off' the excess oestrogen. But again, still figuring it out myself and I'm absolutely not a health expert, every body is very different and responds differently to hormonal changes during the cycle (for example, I do relate to the crazy pre-ovulation feeling to some extent but I struggle a lot more with PMS). Hope this helps a bit though. I've also been in The Flow Collective for a couple of months now (Maisie Hill's sort of coaching platform that takes hormonal matters into account a lot) and there's definitely more people struggling with this so you're not the only one at all!

I don't comment on anything ever, but I really related to what you said about not wanting to put a plaster on a condition and it re-emerge in a few years. I definitely have PMDD (which I know you've said you don't think this is) and wanted to get properly diagnosed after over a year off the pill but it got too bad and I had to go back on at least for the short term on like an emergency basis. I hope you manage to see someone about it and it's great to hear you get creative/other benefits during this time too xx

I know I’m late into the conversation here. I just wanted to tell you that you’re not alone with these symptoms in your menstrual cycle 🤍 What you’re describing sounds a lot like PMDD, which I also suffer from. Cudos to you for recognizing the patterns and seeking help. I hope your new doctor gave you the help you needed. Don’t be afraid to stand your ground if the first cure you try doesn’t help. For me a combination of eliminating stress as much as I can, allowing myself to sleep, as well as medication for the depressive episodes has helped me handle the worst symptoms. But it took me years of trying and adjusting to find what worked for me.
If you need it there are also some really sweet support groups on Facebook where you can ask questions or write anonymously if you need.
    Take care ❤

Just a word on not getting a GP appointment. Changing practices may not be the answer. My husband is a GP and there is a chronic shortage, so much paperwork and aging population. I encourage him not to work full time. I too work in healthcare, in a hospital setting as a allied health professional (not a doctor, nurse or admin), and our jobs are stressful, intense and either people centric or paperwork that requires precision that can hold up to legal scrutiny. The public health system is at breaking point. We're fighting fires, acute health concerns have to take priority in our current state. We need to put pressure on our government to do better by our health system as staff are voting with our feet and leaving the professions we studied so long to earn and love ❤️

Lucy, have you looked into PMDD? Premenstrual dysphoric disorder has symptoms similar to what youre describing and i wouldnt be surprised if that's what it is. I was diagnosed recently and put on prozac (fluoxetine) and it's made life a lot more manageable since! I would ask your GP if you havent already. The research available is still pretty limited iirc but your gp or obgyn should have more info

I once read (not sure how reputable the source was) but it takes the same amount of time you were on the pill to completely withdraw from it. I didn't fully settle until that period ended (I was on the pill for 3 years and it took that same amount of time to settle).

With the hormones before the period starting, it can be really really bad for me, but I'm also 42, and this is something fairly new for me, when I talked to my gyno about it they didn't really have any answers, but for me personally I'm just chalking it up to being 42 and in or close to perimenopause (it's the years before menopause actually starts), I think since my cycle is extremely regular my doctors are too worried, but my hormones can be all over the place and my anxiety levels have never been so high, and yeah, it's like the week before my people starts

O m g! Yes same! (Hormonal chats) I have had heart palpitations on and off for over a year, doctors couldn’t find anything but when I started keeping a diary of symptoms I noticed it was related to my period. I also get ‘low moments’ full of existential anxiety/overwhelm/no motivation during the run up. I wish doctors would talk more about hormonal issues, I have started taking balancing supplements for hormones which have helped. It can still be quite isolating and worrying (palpitations) but hopefully you get some answers! Never been on the pill though, so maybe it’s age change? Who knows 😆 good luck!

Oh, hey, I have increased anxiety around ovulation, too, as well as nausea. Heart racing only happened to me when I had temporary hyperthyroidism following pregnancy though, so thyroid could be a potential place to check for that aspect of it? Other than that, I have no advice! I suspect I may just be really sensitive to hormonal fluctuations (I tend to also feel bad the first day of my period, but in a different way). I have endometriosis, but I don't think that's really related to the anxiety thing. I do have pain around ovulation time that's related to that though. I always know when I ovulate because my ovaries hurt every time, which is how I was able to figure out that the anxiety spike always takes place around ovulation. For me, hormonal birth control isn't an option because I basically feel nauseous, anxious, and depressed the entire time I'm on the pill.

I haven't seen a doctor for it (because they're going to tell me to lose weight or something and not actually investigate) but I think it's the hormones trying to spike for ovulation but my bc tamping that down

Your pre-ovulation vibe sounds to me like high energy, low executive function - lots of energy, lots of focus when you're zoning in on something you enjoy or find stimulating, but little choice over where to direct it, and low capacity to do 'boring' stuff (like keeping on top of housework etc) even when you know it's important. Full disclosure, since being diagnosed with ADHD I see everything through that lens, so it might be somewhat skewed, but that's my read!

Would recommend seeing a Herbalist or Naturopath they can help you naturally balance your hormones. Good to get the diagnosis from a Dr if possible however, they're usual go to is to put us on the pill as if it's a cure all. It doesn't solve the root cause as you say. Natural health practitioners actually sort out the root cause and usually it's all natural.

I had WILD menstrual cycle depressions and anxiety issues for most of my life- nothing helped, my cycles were all over the place, the pill, meds, nothing worked- finally tried a Natropath because it was the only thing left and it not only helped but it totally cleared everything up, regular cycles, just down to a totally normal and manageable 1-2 days of PMS irritability which is so fine compared to what it was before… anyway everyone is different so a Natropath would work with you to reset your hormones in the way your body needs… can’t recommend it enough.
