My top tip. Use a plumbers pipe cutter to cut down handlebars. Easy and accurate. Works for me.

Hey Man, love your video! Anyway, I do have a question. I have an ultegra r8000 rx derailleur with clutch and I'm planning to use a tiagra flat bar shifter 4700 series. Any info if will it work? I did a little research and found out tiagra 4700 does have the same pull ratio on newer 11 speed shimano road models. Appreciate your response, thanks man!

Thanks for watching, I’m not 100% sure on this match but if you have matching 10 speed rear cog with the front 10 speed changer. I can’t see why not ? If it’s cable the same as 4700 series then I would say yes . But I wouldn’t want to be responsible for you wasting money if not .

Why did you take the two rings off the top?

    • @davesolobiker5601
      @davesolobiker5601  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Because the new stem was a different size, and needed those two rings removed so I could tighten the stem in place . If I left them in the stem bolt wouldn’t reach to tighten up. Atb Dave 🚲👍

Hi Dave! Been entertaining the idea of a conversion too. Everywhere I look online there's warnings that a dropbar bike is meant for only dropbars and changing to flatbars makes it "unrideable". Thoughts on your conversion so far?

It's quite subjective, dependent upon the terrain you'll be traversing.
MTB trails (void obstacles to catch your bars on) "the wider the better" seems to be the popular approach.
I live in a mountainous region of Colorado, so 60% of my riding is done climbing or ascending on well maintained roads and trails.
For that reason, I chose a 460mm flat bar conversion for my road bike, mounted the bar sloped down & away (polar opposite to traditional).
This on the advice of a professional bike fitter.
Beyond chuffed at the results: Gained 10 watts on climbs and 15 on flat terrain with no time loss over my drops.
What's more, steering is notably more intuitive & stable whilst being noticeably more comfortable due to the slope placing my hands/arms in a more natural position (275° Left hand, 85° Right).
My mates thought I was mad... until they gave it a go.
They've since adopted my exact set-up.
I've since converted my MTB (for proper off-road) from a 600mm to 500mm and seeing massive improvements there too.
As many bike fitters suggest: Measure you shoulder length and fit a bar that corresponds to that, regardless of the terrain.

Nice job! What is the angle of the new stem? Did it affect the handling of the bike? The bar was cut to 660, was that a good width or would a bit wider been better? Thanks.

Something that keeps popping up as I research this topic..... did you need to change out the rear and/or front derailleur? I'm reading the mountain selectors don't work well with road gear.

I have just done a conversion from road to flat bar......I really like the new ride position, so much more relaxed, can turn easily, and if you set the bars correctly, power to go up hills is pretty good still. It is taking a bit to get the shifter and brake handles dialed in to keep my wrists in a good power location...been finding it awkward to get the shifter to a place that just uses the edge of the thumb, without having to alter the hand position...Thankfully lots of MTB videos on setting the cockpit.
