Brompton First Ride | Exploring Liverpool | Leeds Liverpool Canal
In this video I explore around Liverpool, on what is my first ride on my new Brompton. I search out how the canal connects from the Mersey into the Leeds Liverpool canal. I then follow the front eastwards towards Garston on wet afternoon.

I like your video Dave, which brings back memories- My daughter was also at Liverpool Uni and I miss our days out there since she finished..it’s a great place! ..however me and my cycling pals have a ride planned that way later on this year..probably a circuit of the Wirral - lots of traffic-free rail trails etc running alongside the Dee and Mersey estuaries. I bought a used 6 speed Brompton 2 years ago and love it. I’ve used it loads and done a few tours - just got back from 400 miles around Brittany, with a hassle-free train journey to Plymouth and back! I have fitted a 39t chainring so hills aren’t a problem - don’t know why Brompton don’t offer this as an option! Have you seen Susanna Thornton Brompton Tourer on TH-cam? Amazing lady.
Thanks mate , it sounds like you’re enjoying your Brompton to the full. Brittany sounds amazing , I would love a trip there. I have ordered a 39T chainring as I thought it was too highly geared. So hoping this will improve the gearing. And yes I follow Susanna Thornton who does some great videos 👍 atb Dave
5:35 there was a vertical lift bridge there back in the 70s before the A5036 was built
Thanks interesting to know, nothing to show anymore tho atb Dave
Nice short video of your 1st outing on your Brompton. I have recently bought a Brompton electric following retirement and fancy exploring the canal by going a bit further along. I've managed the trail from the pier head to the end of otterspool promenade and would like to continue on to Speke / Hale and possibly Widnes by picking up the TPT. I think that there is a short section where you need to ride along the main road, but Google maps shows a lot of cycle lane for the most part. Happy cycling.
Great stuff , you could cycle so far up the canal and train back to where you live. Train travel much easier with a Brompton 🚲👍
@davesolobiker5601 Hi there, following our earlier thread, I've just watched your Leeds/Liverpool (day 1) footage and would ask if you think the terrain is suitable for the Brompton? It looked a bit dodgy in places to me but as a new owner I'm not sure of their true capabilities. Either way, another great video of our historic canal trails.
@@allanb2906 yes it would be possible ,if the paths have firmed up since I did it, but saying that it, would be very rough in places as the Brompton feels all the bumps. Especially parts where tree roots are exposed.
Did this route in two sections, a long way but good route especially over the pennines.
Yes I agree it’s a great scenic route atb Dave
nice bike, looks a good place to ride a bike.
Thanks , canal tow paths always good as away from heavy traffic 🚲👍
Another great video Dave. Pity about the rain but no trouble to a hardy bloke like you.😁 Cheers from NZ.
Thanks mate , well it is Britain in summer 🌧️😂 atb Dave
Not seen a Brompton in these colour scheme blue and black before. Smart. I have a red and black M6L for 18 years now. It's been absolutely brilliant and still going strong. Now with a 39T front chain ring, meaning hills are a lot easier to climb and it spins out on the flat at about 22/23 mph. It now has SP dymamo hub in the front wheel with Supernova E3 Pro 2 front and rear lights so never have to worry about lighting ever again. They are bright. Also fitted SPDs to mine, Short Titec bar ends, Better Jack Kuosac Easy wheels so it rolls a lot better when folded also an Easy wheel extender so a lot more stable when folded. Rear rack is a tubular after market Ace rack lighter than the std Brompton one but still strong. I've toured all over on mine. UK, Wales, Scotland, France, Spain, Gran Canaria as well as commuted 40 miles a day on mine for two years. Loaded up they are surprisingly capable bikes for carrying heavy loads shopping and touring. Mine's a keeper will never part with it. It has been through 2 bottom pivot hinges though. Just about to fit the 3rd as these are a weak point of the Brompton, but given I have ridden up and down a lot of steep mountain roads on mine loaded up eg Gran Canaria, I can cut it some slack. Enjoy yours. Hope to see more of it on your channel. Check out Brompton Traveler's YT channel. www.youtube.com/@BromptonTraveler/videos ATB.
Thanks for all of the info, I am currently looking at replacing the 50T chainring as this is too high in my opinion and a 39T will be better for the hills . Glad to hear yours has been serving you well especially with all the extra mods to make life easier . Do you have a link for your rear rack as the Brompton one is do heavy ! I do plan on doing some Bikepacking trips on it in the near future . Tfw atb Dave PS I am a sub already to that channel 🚲👍
Thank you so much, keep enjoying the Tours
Thanks mate , on another tour next weekend 🚲⛺️👍
Good to see you out on the Brommie Dave, it looks great. Looking forward to seeing you take it out for a camp. They're great bikes, I've enjoyed 2yrs of hassle free riding on mine, just taking care of tyres and odd bit of maintenance. The only thing I didnt like was the original saddle, might as well have sat on a razor blade! I swapped it out for a Brooks and it was a game.changer. Agree with you about the gears, they did take a bit of getting used to but its a really simple setup. I do find the gearing a little high though, particularly when on the hills and am thinking of dropping down a few teeth on the front chainring. Enjoy 👍
Thanks mate , it’s a great little bike to ride very agile indeed . I agree on the gears I might change the front ring to a 39 teeth as I never got into those high end gears. Saddle at the moment seems no worse than my gravel bike but will monitor this. Hoping to do a camping trip with it soon 🚲⛺️👍atb Dave
Nice video, I did the full Liverpool / Leeds on my brommie last year .. brutal
Good going , we did it on gravel bikes in April and that was bad enough 😂
Nice video. If you're looking for a longer ride, you can hop the ferry over to Seacombe or use Merseyrail to get to Birkenhead Hamilton Square and then cycle up on to the promenade. There's about 10 miles of road-free riding you can do which will bring you over to the other side of Wirral with views of the River Dee and Wales. If you push on into West Kirkby you can get on the Wirral Way and cycle down the other side of Wirral. That's all cycle path and you can another 15 miles down the other side. You then hop on the train at Hooton and get back to Liverpool.
Thanks , only had a short window this time but will deffo look into a longer trip over on the Wirral side 👍next time I’m down at my daughters uni
As a new owner of a Brompton following retirement and living about 15 miles outside of Liverpool, I'm keen to try your suggestion. I'm not sure whether to start somewhere near Otterspool or do it the reverse way and stating near West Kirkby.
@@allanb2906 I'd start at West Kirby. Normally, cycling from West Kirby towards Liverpool would mean that you'd have the wind behind you. Have fun!
it would rain on its maiden voyage dave 🥴 the Brompton will give you loads of options hopping off & on buses & trains 👍 surprised they do a electric model.
Yeah British summer Geordie , it’s surprisingly agile to control and ride👍
Did you ferry cross the Mersey?
No not of this occasion , I have in the past tho 👍

Cheers Ian , it was nice to head back down the l&l 👍 looking forward to the next trip 🚲⛺️👍
Shame about the weather, but it is to be expected as it is summer. The brompton looks grand and its good you have the 6 speed, the next thing will be an overnighter on the bike? I have been looking for one, but on market place as I need a good second hand one to suit my budget. I hope the whole journey down was a good one as short visits often are. ATB Big Dave
Typical weather mate , it’s on the cards to do an overnighter on the Brompton where and when not quite sure yet. Really pleased with it and how well it handles too 👍 atb Dave
Brilliant tour and commentary and video. I'll be doing this trip in just over a weeks time. If you did it again, what items is essential to take? Many Thanks Mike
Thanks , difficult one that . Deffo waterproofs. Stuff I didn’t use like spares, tubes and tools extra weight but wouldn’t leave without them. I think I have it fairly dialled in with what to carry without overdoing it . Atb Dave and enjoy your trip 🚲⛺️👍
Did you hear it at the time or while video editteing? Me and my wife both hear "Yes it is" in possibly a stronger Cumbrian twang 🤔
I heard nothing whilst I was filming , only when I replayed it back home 🤷♂️
Thank you for this video. I converted my road bike today and love it. Much more comfy and usable. This video really helped!
Glad it helped in some way, atb Dave 🚲👍
Another great blog Dave - hope you enjoyed it, alwasy fascinates me those rural roman outposts up there - would highly recommend Vindolanda you went past, highly worthwhile and oddly enough despite being in private membership, way better than anything Engligh Heritage have on the wall. I did this the other year and was dissapointed that whilst they had active digs at Vindo, the EH sites literally zero being done at them.
Thanks mate , it was an enjoyable trip. Vindolanda is on the to visit list one day. Tfw atb Dave ⛺️🚲👍
Hi Dave great to watch really interesting, great camera work 😊

Lovely Dave ,really enjoyed your wee trip ,🍀
Glad you enjoyed it atb Dave ⛺️🚲👍
What bike have you got use for this video...
It’s my old Cannondale Caadx, I resprayed over the winter to a more subtle colour.
I did it! I pedalled and use on/off till 89%. Your battery level must be 89%!!! Once you achieve this level, your bike will be ready to run. My advice is not to charge more than 88%, and you'll avoid 193 error. Thank you very much for your help.
Thanks for the tips atb Dave 🚲👍
The Farmer was a bellend. He’s no right to spray people with shit. All he had to say was leave and tell him not to camp there again. It’s a straight forward assault. But that’s up to the cyclist if he makes it official.
Yeah farmer was well out of order , not sure on the outcome ?
Enjoyed that dave I've cycled most of that route myself atvb Jimmy 😎😎👍👍

HAS ANYBODY ELSE NOTED THAT THIS GUY RE-POSTS HIS ORIGINAL VIDEOS REGULARLY. I ASSUME THIS IS TO GAIN EXTRA REVENUE WITH NO EXTRA EFFORT ON HIS PART.
No need to shout , so if you would care to read the description. I do my trips in either 2 or 3 days so make the same in episodes as this is much easier to edit . Then a few weeks later I make into one longer full video. Some people prefer shorter videos and some longer . I hope this clears up the confusion. Hi. Just discovered your channel and loving the vids. The bike camping ones are really informative and helpful, and some beautiful spots you find. Quick question - why the change from drops to flat bars? How difficult was the changeover? Cheers, and looking forward to watching the rest 😁
Thanks for watching , I changed the bars for a better riding position in my opinion . I did a video on this which you will find on an earlier video . th-cam.com/video/hLpNqF8eiGM/w-d-xo.htmlsi=_3cJHHYdx1-aiyK2 It was pretty straightforward and not that expensive . Atb Dave 🚲⛺️👍
@@davesolobiker5601 cheers for that, much appreciated. Atb, Simon
Nice one Dave, that farmer spraying 💩 over the bike camper made me laugh though! 😂
Yeah poor camper 😂
i am into bike packing myself . that farmer may have had previous nasty experiences with bikers and hikers that have stuck their noses into his privicy and lifestyle . it is important to respect rural lifestyles and activities when in the countryside .one nosy do goder can easily ruin it for everybody.
Yeah without full context to the video it’s hard to understand it really, but still over the top reaction in my opinion.
If I were that cyclist who the farmer sprayed with shit I would sue him. His response was totally unacceptable, not proportionate in any way. The farmer should have just approached him and asked him to leave. End of. Looks like you will be fine on this mtb for bike packing. What's not to like?
Thanks mate , yeah I think the farmer was looking for attention or he wouldn’t have made a video ! Hoping to get out BikePacking using the mtb in the near future 👍 atb Dave
Great video Dave - nice to see some sunshine. I think if you have low enough gears that bike will be an excellent bikepacking rig. As for that farmer - should be charged with assault. Vile behaviour.
Thanks Andrew , yeah the gearing is way better than my current bike. Farmer was bang out of order , think he was looking for attention otherwise why video it ? Atb Dave
Hi Dave, bike looks spot on for bikepacking, especially the canals😎, your BB on that bike is a square taper cartridge BB, so your frame shell is BSA treaded, the best 👌🏻, doubt you’ll get a creak out of any of the bottom brackets you’ll choose for that, unlike the hateful BB30…farmer was obviously loving making his video, fair enough, wild camper was daft, 1st rule, set up late, leave early, if you’re still there with your tent up in broad daylight you don’t know what you’re doing, you should be gone by dawn at the latest, both were wrong, but it’s very easily avoided if you don’t take the piss, I wild camp before I get hate, you just can’t do it, I’ve never had any trouble, but I follow the unwritten rules, ⛺️🚲🙂👍🏻
Cheers Ian , I should have had it ready for the Leeds trip really 😂 the BB seems so much better than my caadx one !! Yeah farmer was looking for likes and views on Facebook, but I think it went the other way as he was bang out of order !! But yeah the arrive late and gone early rule or simply out of sight and folk are none the wiser .😎⛺️🚲👍 atb Dave
