First #Bikepacking Trip of 2025 | Giant FastRoad AR1
For once the weather played ball on my days off, so I packed the new Giant bike up and headed off on a local route up into a forest for an overnight tarp and bivi camp.

A Rainy Ride Out | Hill Testing The Giant
มุมมอง 1K14 วันที่ผ่านมา
With a free afternoon I headed out to some local hills, to see how the Giant gearing coped with them. Unfortunately the rain made an appearance and made it rather moist out there. Still it was a good leg stretcher and good to do so more niggle testing on the new bike. And apologies as I seemed to waffle on a bit on this video. Hitway BK35 Folding e-bike is it any good ?

I was sent this folding e-bike by Hitway to pass my thoughts on, this bike in my opinion is more suited to commuters who maybe travel into cities by train or bus then need to commute the last few miles to work. Saying all that it was good fun, stick it in the boot of the car and you have wheels ready for a city explore or whatever takes your fancy. Bike ➡️amzn.eu/d/0u0w5ws ➡️hitway.eu/products/...

Ancient out front mount would be so much better for you Dave
Nice bike, I've got a Giant Revolt gravel bike, gonna get some new pads and discs as mine are worn out. Not been able to ride since a bad ankle injury in November, so looking forward to getting out again. Thanks for the inspiration.
Thanks and hoping you get out on the Revolt very soon atb Dave 🚲👍
Love your video! Really inspirational to get out and about during these winter months!
Glad you enjoyed it, yeah a small adventure lifts the spirit. I hope you get out soon atb Dave 🚲👍
Belting effort at this time of year Dave. Don't know if other people have mentioned this (or if you already do this) but you said your feet were wet.......i always wear waterproof socks when out cycling or walking in the rain (i wear either seaskinz or the "crane" socks from aldi, both work great - no more wet or cold feet and your feet don't sweat or overheat - happy days) 😁 . Look forward to the next adventure. cheers mate, Paul 👍
Thanks Paul , yeah I do own some of those socks and should wear them 🤷♂️ doh Yeah I had a dryish 2 days off so made a bid for it 🚲⛺️👍 TFW atb Dave 👍
Great video and channel, I've subbed 👍
Thanks for the sub 🚲⛺️👍
It’s a nice ride but as I’m retired I think I would enjoy it more on my little 350 Enfield motorcycle, I say that because there is far to much road cycling and that puts me off cycling it?
Thanks for watching , enjoy your 350 Enfield sounds like fun atb Dave 👍
Nice one Dave enjoyed that mate look fwd to the next adventure. Atb Coops 👍🏻🚴
Thanks Coops, just back off a trip video out next week once edited 🚲⛺️👍 atb Dave
Great vlogs Dave, music too, looking forward to your next one now with Ian next week
Thanks mate , video edited and ready for release next week 👍 atb Dave
Love these Dave, love the music too, waiting for your next one now with Ian
Thanks , next week it will be out 🚲⛺️👍 atb Dave
Hi Dave what make is the front rack you have there? Looks really good.
It’s a converted rear rack 😂 I cut it down to fit the front of the Giant 🚲👍
Cracking overnighter. I've tried going through your other videos to see if you mention the brand / model of your front rack. I have a Giant revolt and think that rack would be a good addition.
You won’t find it , I took it off my cannondale and it’s a rear rack cut down to fit the front 😂 but it does work well 👍 atb Dave 🚲⛺️👍
What a great little overnighter this was, Dave! This has really inspired me to get out on my very first hooped bivvy camp, which I’m planning to do this month - before February is out… Bivvy’s really do have their place, and fit many places even a 1-man tent wouldn’t fit. Just hope I get on with mine, and can then enjoy several stealthy wild camps in it over the next 10 months or so. 👍🏻
Thanks mate , yeah the bivi fits anywhere and I wasn’t sure if I could pitch a tent ? So the bivi fitted the bill perfectly The trick is a bivi is for sleeping in only and the tarp is a great addition for cooking and just sitting under. I hope you enjoy your bivi camp atb Dave 👍
Hi Dave, just being out is 'Happiness mode"...whatever the weather. The bike set up looks great.....Pays to practice a few set ups before the longer trips....That's a really quiet area where you pitched up for the night. I must explore more...Daylight hours getting longer now..YAY......ATB Annie.
You got that right Annie, being out camping is just what we need , it’s a new location for me too ⛺️👍 any trips on your new bike yet ? Happy camping atb Dave 🚲⛺️👍
@@davesolobiker5601 llama bike upgrade is ready to roll. Ridden a few warm ups near home and hope to start overnighting from Thursday if all goes to plan..gently does it tho'...Im a beginner biker now. Last time I did long distance bike packing was in the 80/90's down under.
Going wild camping and playing a radio ? Not for me mate. First and last viewing.
Yeah whatever mate , what do you do to make the time pass then ?
Why don't you clip in?
I used to but it’s not for me these days , quite happy with flat pedals 🚲👍
fair play to you Dave you defo need company on a ride like that great stuff tho.bike looks super cool.
Yes they are long nights when solo , happy with new bike tho atb Dave 🚲⛺️👍
Good one Dave nice little trip for the first of the year. When are you and Ian back in action? Anyhow stay safe. B. K.
Thanks Brian , just back from a trip with Ian which will be ready next week 🚲⛺️👍
Nice video Dave. Have you watched Ian Nairns visit to Carlisle and Longtown from 1971? Great insight to the old Waverley at the Southern end. th-cam.com/video/azjkthwrCtU/w-d-xo.htmlsi=I4Kz9qOEQ3O5xQr9
Thanks mate, yes I’ve watched the video such a waste closing the line and the community with it ! I did a ride from Steele Road to Whitrope on my mtb here - th-cam.com/video/tnUZnrhoQ4Q/w-d-xo.htmlsi=mI0i3DMPvv8OG84H Atb Dave 🚲⛺️👍
Dave ...my bike’s mostly in bottom, bottom gear, only been biking for 6 months and I’m 70 next month 🤔🤮 I think bike packing looks like fun, even on a sloooooooooooow bike. Your video popped up brilliant subbed ❤ ? ? You have red sidewalls ?? 👍
As I always say it’s not a race it’s the journey that counts , those are tan walls which I like 👍 thanks for the sub atb Dave 🚲⛺️👍
@@davesolobiker5601 thanks ... yeah 22 miles today just peddling about, mostly to try out a new take a look rear view mirror, heap it works.. I did wonder if they were tan..... 🖖
Great overnight trip. Beautiful sunrise 🌅
Thanks and yes a lovely sunrise indeed 🌅tfw atb Dave ⛺️🚲👍
Brilliant channel Dave, I'm just getting my kit together:-) I've got most of it, I'm looking forward to watching more of your channel.
Much appreciated mate , I hope you have some great trips ahead as it warms up. More content coming next week atb Dave ⛺️🚲👍
Another really good video, I’ve followed you on strava and might use some of your routes.
Glad you like them, and go for it TFW atb Dave ⛺️🚲👍
Excellent first wild camping adventure for 2025 Dave. The bike looks in good shape, ready for serious action. Cheers from New Zealand.
Cheers Chris , it was a good test and all seems good atb Dave 🚲⛺️👍
Thoroughly chilled adventure. Nice camp setup 👍 thanks for sharing
Glad you enjoyed it , tarp and bivi as I wasn’t sure if I could pitch a tent up where I was going. Atb Dave 🚲⛺️👍
Bike looks very nice with your kit on. Great camp, thanks for taking us along, stay safe on the roads Dave: Russ 👍🏼🚴♂️🏕☕
Thank Russ will do 🚲⛺️👍atb Dave
Nice one Dave, that looked like a good workout, but always great to get out in the tarp and bivi. I liked how you had the bike setup too, looked very neat and tidy. 👍
Cheers mate , yeah wasn’t sure with the lie of the land and the bivi goes anywhere . Yeah it’s more streamlined than having panniers , and is much easier getting through tight spots. Tfw atb Dave ⛺️🚲👍
Great wee trip, Dave. What tyres and mudguards are you using there? I've a Thorn Club tour flat bar with similar geometry and would like to build it up something the same. It's got space for 38mm tyres if it had clip on mudguards fitted but I'm unsure what mudguards to go for. Thanks for any info and BW Mark 👍
Thanks Mark Tyres are Pirelli Cinturato adventure , mine are 40mm. But you can get different sizes. The mudguards are from SKS link here ➡️ SKS GERMANY RACEBLADE PRO XL... www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B016OV17IW?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share Atb Dave 🚲⛺️👍
@davesolobiker5601 cheers Dave, much appreciated 👍👍
Well done sir . Im still telling my self its to wet or to muddy.😂 But fast running out of reasons why no to get my first camp in of 2025 . Thanks for the vid .
You can do it, once your out it’s fine but yeah making that initial move is always tough this time of year atb Dave 🚲⛺️👍
Nice one Dave - just watched a few of yours tonight. I'm liking the look of the Giant, and it seems to be suiting you well. A good first test out with a bikepacking set-up on, and if you didn't have to get off and push up any hills then happy days! Not a bad little place to pitch up for the night, but you know I'm not a fan of bivi's - I think you're the 1st person I've heard mention about the bivi resting on your sleeping bag, therefore losing loft and heat. Camp looked cosy though with the tarp up - was the dripping water all night not like a Chinese water torture? Atb Donna :)
Thanks Donna hope you are recovering well 👍 Happy with the giant now I have it setup up to my suiting and happy that no pushing required up the hills 😂 I wasn’t 100% sure what pitches were on offer and know you can stick a bivi and tarp anywhere really. Yeah as side sleeper my side coming into contact with the bivi was giving a cold spot , which I didn’t have the other night on a camp using my tent 😂 But a good test of the new bike , just need it to warm up with those longer days to enjoy. Atb Dave ⛺️🚲👍
Eess luvlee.
Thank you atb Dave ⛺️🚲👍
Nice recce mission in the woods, but not so stealthy wandering around with a bright red jacket on 😂 New bike looks the biz and you seem to like it, so that's good. Nice to see the sun oot as well :)
Thanks Donna, yeah red is not very stealthy 😂 but nice to see the sun again lol and another good ride out on the giant. Atb Dave 🚲👍
nice woodland camp dave 👍⛺ & a good 40 miles in the legs & the new giant done a good job🚴 i rode up to consett last Saturday & there was a few trees down after the storm.nice sunrise you got 👌☀️
It did well Geordie , happy with the setup. Yeah I imagine it was wild up there in that storm , I wonder how many are down where I camped 🤔atb Dave 🚲⛺️👍
Nice one Dave….looking forward to some more adventures from you this year with your owd mucka Ian too..bessies Ron
Thanks Ron, it was a good test and looking forward to the warmer days ahead atb Dave 🚲⛺️👍
@ me too…I’m in Egypt the minute doing some diving….I’ve got Cogs in Selby remaking up my 35 year old Dawes Galaxy at the minute so looking forward to getting it back n out n about for some winter n early spring rides n stopovers when we get back home. It’s nice n warm n sunny at the minute and the diving is good but I seriously miss my velocopede and the British countryside
@ enjoy Egypt and the warm sunshine 😎👍
Very enjoyable as always and video quality seemed better, very nice
Thanks , same camera gear 👍 thanks for watching atb Dave
Good effort using the bivy this time of year mate💪🏻, beautiful scenery as always in your neck of the woods, we’ll have to do a camp up there, those woods look great, nice cycling trails through them as well, catch you soon mate ⛺️🚲👍🏻
Cheers Ian , the tarp was deffo needed tho ! one day we will do a northern trip atb Dave ⛺️🚲👍
Nice one Dave, A refreshing change, a camp without beer, this means your less likely to have to get out of the bivi for the night time wee wee :) I like the bivi but for all round comfort they do need a tarp, I shall probably be using my Snugpack Ionosphere which is basically a Bivi and tarp combined, but a large tarp does give good living space. Great overnighter, I need to get out! Sandy
Thanks Sandy , yeah a dry camp 😂 yeah I chose the bivi as I wasn’t sure of what pitching option in and around that forest. The bivi goes anywhere but yeah a tarp gives that living space to shelter under. hope you get out soon atb Dave ⛺️🚲👍
This is the type of trip I need to get me started . There's plenty of farm lane near me but I've found a small woodland that is ideal but it has keep out signs dotted about
Thanks , hope you get out on a camp. keep out signs are usually a no for me ! unless you know it’s not actively used for anything. atb Dave 🚲⛺️👍
stopped the vid to get a screen shot of that sunrise ... just super pall. and the pic at 17.57.
It was a lovely sunrise that one 🌅 atb Dave ⛺️🚲👍
Nice good to see you back out for the first trip of the year :-) Hopefully the ice has gone now for the winter going forward!
Thanks mate , yeah I.cant wait for those longer warmer days ahead. atb Dave
@@davesolobiker5601 Yea i've already noticed the nights pulling out an hour compared to a month ago (north pennines) - thought the winter might have been one like 2011 but alas no, just the other week with the cold spell thats been it. Ps it been a while and apoligies if missed it on the vlog, what happened to the cannondale? I converted my cannondale Quick frame decade ago for full touring set up and love it (has a shock in, was hardtale but i prefer drops and hoods, so i converted it and granted been pimped up with GRX800 few years back so its what people these days call gravel lol) But yea just being nosy with the frame did you have any issues with it? Nice new bike though!
@ Is still have the Cannondale and it’s used as my daily commute to work , however the reason I changed was due to the problematic BB30 bottom bracket ! Every so many hundred miles it starts creaking and needs stripping and re greased etc. So yeah still going well apart from that 👍 atb Dave
@@davesolobiker5601 Interesting sounds a bugger, i have a BBR-60 in mine and touch wood never any issues. I use a very hefty dollop of Parktool HPG-1 on the threads and inside and apart from the annual service i never had an issue touch wood. The only thing i ensure is that the hole's in the bottom of the frame are ok to drain. I did have an older bike, which had problem you described (road) and in the end i just whizzed the bracket, i think sometimes you get friday afternoon ones and all that. Safe riding, and yea great blog.
