    I have owned this rifle for around 13 years , it's light weight,the recoil well it's a dream to shoot. I used to flinch with my Remington In 308. I have cleanly shot red ,fallow and roe in the UK as well as a massive boar.It will put a 3 shot group into one hole . My only negative is that the bi pod is loud to operate when in the field

    Being able to feed rounds in one by one while the mag just sits there is great when you're on polar bear duty. You mostly shoot the gun in the air to scare the bear off, but it can take a few shots, although they don't have to be in quick succession. So you just reload one round into the bay before each shot and you still have a full mag ready in case the bear decides to take things to another level. You'd usually use a shotgun (with slugs) or lever action rifle for that ofc but having the option of using a bolt action like this is handy (308 is a bit small for that of course, but still)

    I love that spare mag in the butt stock. I wish more rifles would have this feature.
    This is an expensive rifle, the ones I can see from retailers is like 2500 bucks, with the 2nd hand market hovering in the 900-1500 range depending. Looks like a winner though.

    I have owned this rifle in .223 for several years and have mounted a regular Khales 3-9x40 scope rearward. I love it. It is very accurate. The clip has never caused me any grief, coffee or not. My bolt catches a little too (maybe not used enough yet). My main complaint is that the foregrip is so wide that when I carry it in my quadbike-mounted gun holder it is hard to fit in in a hurry and I have thereby torn the rubber coating off the inside of the holders. I would prefer if the foregrip was narrower or if the foregrip was not so acutely-angled at the outside edges. My .308 is a Browning BLR stainless takedown, which also serves nicely as a scout rifle with long eye relief scope that stays with the barrel when I take it down to carry in a backpack :) Thanks for the review.

  • @olovikka
    @olovikka 8 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    There's a small strorage department in buttstock also at front of spare mag. Not really anything special, but you could maybe fit there boresnake or something.

  • @giausjulius4
    @giausjulius4 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Its Austrian, cousins to the Germans. Of course its over-engineered. Its also specifically designed to be a rifle with features that "if you could only take one" this would be the one.

  • @ravendon
    @ravendon 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Shh-tire Man-licker.
    The forward mounted scope is for a low power, IER intermediate eye relief scope.
    It's designed to allow both eyes to be open and to clearly see around the scope while not having such a wide discrepency of view between the left and right eyes, so you can quickly move the rifle to shoot at an enemy close to you and out of field of the bore of the rifle.
    You can keep both eyes open with a high magnification scope as well, but the difference in zoom between left and right eyes, causes problems when you have to shift your aim to an enemy 45 degrees from the bore. That first shot will probably go wide.

    I removed the Millett-style sling swivels and replaced them with modern flush cup-style quick releases that use push button swivels. Very easy to do.
    Most people don't get the scout rifle concept until you've actually hunted with one. Lightweight and compact so that you can carry comfortably all day and not snag on brush. .308 caliber that is effective on any game animal in North America. Bolt action for accuracy and reliability. Detachable magazine so it is easy to unload and reload. Before Jeff Cooper and Steyr built this rifle, those things did not exist together in a production firearm. Now, everyone builds a Scout variant and for good reason.
    The Steyr offers a few unique features that I like. The locking bolt is good if you're using a climbing stand or hunting in brush. I've had brush and pack straps open the bolt of other rifles, even on Safe. You can silently unlock the bolt if you control the handle while you work the safety. The extra magazine in the stock is great for extra ammo and quick reloads and saves me from carrying a wallet with extra ammo. You can also continue hunting if you lose a magazine or have a magazine failure of some kind. I like the magazine latches because they are not easy to accidentally release, even while wearing gloves.
    I equipped mine with a standard mount (not forward mounted) 44mm objective scope and it fits very, very well and is still compact and lightweight.

    • @cs-rj8ru
      @cs-rj8ru 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's a neat concept, a little gimmicky though. Do you really need all those "features" in a hunting rifle? If it's not going to be a hunting rifle, you'd be better served with a SERVICE rifle.

    I have 2 of them one in a 308 and the other in a 223 both in stainless with fluted barrels. had them for many years and the bolt does not have the flat piece on the side of it, it is rounded like a normal looking bolt. Neither of them are threaded. great rifles I love them.

    To wishy washy.
    Do you like the gun or not?
    Have you tried a Remington mod 700 action lately? Sloppy bolt, so-so trigger but at least they don't miss fire anymore when you engage the safety!
    The Savage scout is not even in the same zip code as the Steyr Scout Rifle.
    The Ruger Scout is not so bad but, Ruger cuts corners now in production to keep costs low. Sadly that's Ruger new business model.
    The Mossberg Scout is just laughable.
    The clear winner is the original and still reining champion "the Steyr scout Rifle."The attention to detail, the fit & finish, the cool gadgets like the built in bipod and spare magazine in the buttstock as well as the quality machine work are all absolutely superb on the Steyr scout. This clown can't make up his mind whether he likes the rifle or not. The trigger is superb straight from the factory set @ 3lbs but is adjustable if you prefer more or less pounds to your particular trigger pull. I have tried all of the current Scout offerings & with no bias I can say that the Steyr brand Scout rifle is clearly the way to go.
    Cheers gents.

      i think out of scout rifle out there, Savage's offering is the best.
      for the price, it comes packed with features. Especially the adjustable trigger! Downside is, mags are hard to find and expensive. the rifle should come with 2 mags.. anyhow overall i feel like savage has done great.

    good review, nice to hear some honest opinions not some fanboy drool, plus I did learn a couple things about the gun, although its not like I am a huge fan and have looked into the gun alot, I got a wild hair and wanted to check it out, I watched the Steyr press vid about the gun thats it , I wanted a quick unbiased overview of the gun and thats exactly what I got, thanks.
    I think the safety is far too complicated as well, its nice the bolt can be pushed down for travel and all that, but that bolt handle springing up is pretty loud certainly enough to scare an animal if you were close. , plus I dont really think that plastic stop that pops up adds any "safety" to the safety for a hunting carry scenario, with a properly tentioned safety ive never had them move, even when brushbusting . All it does is add more things to go wrong, like you said about the 2 stop positions on the magazine.
    Funnily enough while watching the Steyr press release vid They showed the "single feed" position but didnt explain it so I thought the guy doing it had messed up and not inserted it all the way.
    Oh and FYI its pronounced "sh-tire mann-licker"

      I guess it'd depend if you wanted to run a long eye relief scope or not. If you're going to stay true to the scout rifle concept, you'd need something long eye relief and wouldn't need much magnification. If you're going to run the scope near the rear of the receiver, you can use pretty much any "normal" scope. Personally, I think this rifle would be best paired with something like a 1-6 or 2-7.

I think you should get some range time with the Savage and Ruger before making that conclusion. A crappy trigger does not justify a $2000 price tag. @@nothanks3590 ... I've shot the Ruger Precision Rifle in 308Win and I own a Steyr SSG04 in the same calibre. There is NO comparison in build quality and / or accuracy. I have shot the Steyr Scout in 308Win. It's not for me but there is no denying the quality of the rifle. Looks like you lose the bet.

    i don't get it... you know this was never meant for hunting yeah? it was made for Paramilitary use...
    but yeah this rifle would have to be good in some way shape or form because its one of the most popular rifles in Australia at the moment (contrary to what people think guns are not banned in Australia that's a misconception there's just heavy licensing regulations the most popular rifle in Australia is actually the SKS)
    i was thinking about getting one of these but you kinda put me off it...

      +indeed this rifle was built to be a scout rifle, not specifically for paramilitary use. A hunting rifle is closer to what this rifle is intended for.

      The Hunting Gear Guy
      I believe that Genola told you wrong. I am a hunter in Germany and used to own a Steyr Mannlicher Classic (.308). Steyr (pronounced Schtyr like flyer) Mannlicher (Mann-heavy on the 'a' the way the British speak and licher like wisher). Among German hunters a Steyr is considered to be a high quality, reliable (Austrian) rifle suited for the conditions encountered when hunting in Europe but then so is my made in Germany Blaser (pronounced blahzer) :-)

      I've got better shots of the backup irons on my article: www.huntinggearguy.com/rifle-reviews/steyr-scout-review/ They're acceptable for backup purposes, but I wouldn't use them unless I was really up the creek without a paddle.

    Not trying to hurt your feelings, but you might want to work on a script for your vids instead of rambling and saying, "thing" and "uh", or "I guess", or "I don't really know". It seems as though you are just making things up. You say you like or you don't like and you don't seem to have any reasons.
