I think the differences you saw between the markers were more a function of the pigments rather than the carrier. The red pigment of the overhead marker faded quickly, but a Sharpie using the same pigment might well fade just as quickly. On the other hand a black overhead marker might give the same results as the black Sharpie.
Kevin Martin I was going to say this too. I think red is just a colour that fades quickly no matter what. It just seems to be a more volatile pigment.

Is the marker pen only disappearing due to the black colour of the oxidising? So will this also work once the fine silver comes to the top, on the later annealing attempts? My sharpie doesn’t seem to disappear.

Andrew, there are two things you are doing in this video that I was tought never to do; Anneal the piece whilst laying flat and putting it in the acid when still hot (I hear it sizzle). Could you elaborate on this? Or are there any videos of your where you talked about this before?
Joke V I don’t anneal vertically because a beginner may over heat the metal and it will sag and drop. There is nothing wrong with annealing anything flat also I put the item in the safety pickle when there is no colour on the piece ie black heat. I want to work quick as time is money and I see no point putting the piece in water and then wait for it to clean in safety pickle. That wastes 10 minutes of my time that I would have to charge the customer for.

In most “master classes” a jeweler is taught not to quench metal in the acid because the acid could then get into the pores of the metal and then irritate the skin of the wearer, but in all honesty and practicality, I have never heard anyone ever complain about this, not even in India where goldsmiths dunk their gold in powdered acid and then water. So continue to quench in the acid, I agree with Andrew 100%
You need to get a Tele prompt. Your can run them from your Ipad or phone and they're not that expensive. Then you will not have to squint at small print.

Where do you order sheet with protective coating? Usually order from Rio Grande and usually has scratches that have to be sanded out. Tedious.

When i first start learning silversmithing, we were told this only works on fine silver not sterling silver so are you saying this method works on sterling as well as fine. I didn't hear you mention what type of silver you were working with
Nancy4133 nope. Yes, a Sharpie works perfectly on sterling silver.
