This is a brilliant issue, after my own heart. I love this dialogue, very intricate and wonderful to listen to. Two brilliant minds, one has to keep up with this academic discourse to understand the nuances. Personally, I was always raised to know that our country is an inclusive one, including Hindus Muslims, Christians, Jews. Belonging is more important! This trend of Hindutva excludes people. Our country has always been one of tolerance and love. That’s been exemplary to the whole world.

A brilliant exchange and Shashi never disappoints. He has mastery of English and he can articulate his views with total clarity.
On the other hand, WE ARE STUCK WITH THE CHILDISH NOTIONS OF BJP SEMI-LITERATES & INTELLECTUAL ZEROES LIKE MODI, SHAH, YOGI, RAJNATH. These BJP buffoons are a vengeful and malevolent lot and they won't stand any opposition to what they believe. They can't argue logically or discuss rationally. They can only talk of caste & cows, gods & godmen. They are an embarrassment in any international setting.

We need right to offend in Free speech.
We should be able to criticize Islam and Quran, don't need laws against criticism of Hinduism
      Freedom of speech
Indian Govt has shown support to France but shall we stand up for Free speech at home?
Even hate speech MUST be protected as free speech. Because who will be the censor? Can we trust Govt ? One person's valid criticism of something might be hate speech for someone else. That can hinder progress of society ( galilio was penalized for speaking against general belief, but was right ).
Unless speech incites violence or impedes someone else's Free speech it must be protected.
Eg : FRI against Amitabh Bacchan: www.thelallantop.com/news/up-fir-lodged-against-kbc-and-amitabh-bachchan-in-hazratganj-kotwali/
We should be able to burn not only manusmriti but Bhagwat Gita, Quran , guru granthsahib, Buddhist scriptures and Bible as well.
But for British, was burning manusmriti possible in 1926?
It might not provide for civil discourse but that is not it's purpose.

Congress has so far managed to keep together so many cultures and nations within a nation with a weak definition of nationalism but they have been able to do it with many hurdles nonetheless.
No one in the world can attempt to define what nationalism in India really should be because India has been an unexpected experiment in history which against all odds succeeded. Everyone predicted that with Nehru's death India would break and even during independence many thought the union wouldn't last. Everyone was wrong. You have to praise the Congress atleast for this. • @Rabidmonkey73
    @Rabidmonkey73 3 ปีที่แล้ว +19

Karan's grasp on history seems a little weak here. Tharoor also seems to miss his primary communication gap with Thapar:
People may call themselves nationalist or patriotic. These terms may have personal meanings to people. These terms also generally tend to have academic meanings, which is what Tharoor is really describing. Basically, what are the more technical features of these ideologies from a sociopolitical perspective?
    Academically:
Patriotism is basically a sense of belonging to your country. Nationalism effectively defines the nation as a whole (by blood, language, territory, shared values/legal systems, religion, etc). Under nationalism, the nation is more important than the individual. However, "the nation" is often a fairly centralised concept, and embodied by the arms of the State. We are seeing in India how quickly a transfer of power can completely redefine the definition of the nation. So nationalism is intrinsically susceptible to State excess or oppression against individuals, because it is fairly easy to justify it under "national interest", which is conveniently decided largely by the State. Institutions like courts and the media are designed to protect against this, but cannot do so once captured.
The core issue is that most people would say they are patriotic. Many people that are incognisant of the difference in the meaning of the terms have been subjected to a bait and switch of starting with "I love my country, I am a stakeholder and I belong" and ending up with "the nation is supreme and therefore my rights are subservient to the national interest".
Finally, many patriots are actually willing to sacrifice their rights/freedoms/lives in service of the national interest. However the crucial question is who decides what the national interest is. When Delhi and the rest of India decide Kashmir needs a change in laws and that justifies locking up their citizens for 8 months, that is an abuse of nationalism in my book.

I remember his old videos didn't even have the guest's name in the title: the format was " | Karan Thapar".
For what it's worth, he may be right. His style is fairly distinctive and I imagine from the size of his following that there is a market for it. Shashi tharoor is very good philosopher and dilplomat. I'm not sure if he is PM material. But to attract the masses, you cannot be s verbose. It has to straightaway capture the heart in 'Their language' which is more visual and symbolic. Look at how Modi wears Naga head dress or Yogi gets Rama and Sita to alight from helicopter! It gives the masses a sense of belonging, and a Pride in the heart about who they are. At the end of the day, when in trouble most Indians will go to Sri Ram only. That's who they are. Yu cannot change it. And why should you!?
In contrast, the liberals 'Talk down' to masses in their Queens English. You make the masses ashamed of who they are. I don't think Congress has much hope.
