  • Pete Aardema and Kevin Braun are known for their homemade engines they build from scratch. They have proven their success with over 30 land speed records in the books. Recently, at the 2021 November El Mirage event, Team Aardema/Braun brought home a 44-year-old record which was set back in August of 1977 by Don Carr. In this video you will see driver Cal Rothe make 3 attempts to lock in this record and make history. The vehicle classification is a (E) Fuel Lakester with a 258ci, 4-liter modified Olds Rocket V8 engine built by Pete Aardema and Kevin Braun. This unique one-of-a-kind engine has a 2.7” inch stroke with a 3.9” inch bore and has been heavily modified and adapted with Corvette ZR1 LT5 Quad cam cylinder heads. This high revving naturally aspirated engine makes 553 HP on gasoline and 682 HP with a 100 shot of nitrous oxide. Jump in the drivers seat and see first hand how talented old school gear heads work together as a team to capture a new land speed record of 226 MPH!

    Several years ago I tracked Pete Aardema down because I had heard of his efforts with Cosworth Pontiac Super Duty cylinder heads. He's a super nice guy who took a good 30 minutes out of his day to talk with a complete stranger and shared what he could about the engine. Cool guy.

    What record exactly? Rules for the record? Standing start across a measured distance? Speed through the traps? Why no backup run the opposite direction?

    • @alexjenner1108
      @alexjenner1108 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      On a long track like Bonneville you can run according to FIA rules which means flying km or flying mile and second run in the other direction. There are also SCTA and other rules this appears to be a shorter track and timed over a shorter distance and maybe no backup run either.

      You know, as a western Canadian road racer, I'd have to agree with you. The shining contrast to that is when the Americans used to come across the border.
      I've personally experienced a complete group effort from them when my car had major issues, and I was throwing in the towel. Five complete foreign strangers swarmed around my car assessing, and then springing into action to get me back on track.
      Not a single local racer, including the one pitted the next stall over, even stopped in. I've heard similar experinces by two friends, one is a road racer, the other a bike road racer.
      both prefer either US sanctioned Canadian events or going across the line to race in the states.
      So my hats off to all you Americans.

    The in cockpit video was just great watching him gently steer out of trouble. I'll bet 90% of drivers don't know how to steer out of a slide. When I was in high school in the 60's the first snow of the year would find me and my buddies out practicing our 4 wheel drifts in our 49-50 Fords and Chevies. Being an avid skier those early learned skills have served me well over the years. Well over a thousand trips to and from the ski areas with no wrecks. I've driven past many hundreds of people in the ditch (usually 4X4's).

      But they needed more than a mile to get up to those speeds. I would love for someone to take a classically configured NASCAR racecar of that era and make a salt run with it. My guess is maybe 170's max with the same gear, tire diameter and aerodynamics. I just don't think they would be able to achieve 200 mph by the finish line. But again, it would be interesting to find out.

Producing enough power to spin the tires at speed when the nitrous kicks in, beats 44 yr old record by a slim margin while displaying the ability to go even faster in a time when production streetcars ( albeit very few and massively expensive ) can top 250. This is really cool. I'm missing context on what brackets of land speed records there are. I don't know. There are road cars like the McLaren F1 that hit 247 mph. Can someone explain? I watched this through.

    • @GregQuirin
      @GregQuirin  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for asking this question, You are right the New McLarens top speed is 250MPH with a 4L V8 and is rated at 1036 HP with twin turbos and a parallel hybrid system. Pete' and Kevin's land speed car is also a Frankenstein 4L V8 with nitrous and is naturally aspirated and making approximately 700HP. Keep in mind this record was set on the lakebed at 3000 FT on dirt with pizza cutter tires, no traction control, Just 100% good old fashion driving input. Land speed records are hard to get as this one was on the books for over 4 decades. Thanks for watching and please check out some of the other videos. Greg Q

    i'm confused by this. The description to me implies this vehicle was powered by a 4 litre V8 engine yet when I Google 226mph land speed record it says that was for a vehicle powered by a 4 cylinder production engine. How many cylinders did the engine in the video have ?

    • @daos3300

      clearly a v8 in the film. the info you googled was the record for a 4 cyl.

      @@daos3300 Well the speed quoted was 226mph, I could find no other land speed record for that speed. There are a great many land speed record categories, it would have been nice to know what record they actually broke.

    How is 226mph a record for land speed? My mitsubishi 3000gt vr4 with nitrous does 189mph and that's a street registered passenger vehicle with a mostly factory duel overhead cam v-6 3 liter... seems the land speed record should be way higher especially with all these mods and enhanced parts.

    • @GregQuirin
      @GregQuirin  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This is a Lakester, Its open wheel so it not considered a streamliner. The class designation is FL = Fuel Lakester, Fuel meaning it using nitrous oxide. The engine classification is E which is a 4 liter class.

    Greg, first let me say i love this series. Pete Aardema and Kev Braun have been legends to this fevered motor brain since I was a child. Much of the "science of going fast" as we know it today has spent time gestating in Pete and Kevin's shed. OK, I've laid up enough "good ole boy" creds, so here's the thing; there is a lot more to Mayor Calloway than you seem to realize- he's about as integral to "how we got here" for land speedsters in the US as it's possible to be. Those old cars also have tales to tell- and the "40's lakester" is a bit later than you think- go talk to George- better see if you can get him and the A&B team to "do lunch" and talk land speed legends. You seem to have the importance of motor head legends in hand- they live and operate in a universe with those outlandish toys they build. Go there, see/hear that and bring it! FR

      Frederic, It would be a great honor to document George Callaway's story and influence in the LSR community. If there is a way to go out their and meet with him on a Saturday or Sunday I'm all in. I know there is a lot of history here and I feel stuff like this needs to be documented so land speed racing history isn't lost. Thank you! Greg

    The class of Engine seems to be 4 Litre Fuel Engine.
    With a touch of Nitrous, to give it some kick.
    I was a little unsure myself until I read more.
    At around 360 KMH it's definitely moving.

      I'm from New Zealand and don't really understand US class rules, but I think class E is 260 cid (4.26L), probably for some historical reasons they didn't just use 4.0L as the limit. Also I think this is an El Mirage record and there are also Bonneville records which tend to be faster, due to the longer course, and there are also FIA world records, but I don't think they have a 4L class.

    So at El mirage you only have to hit the speed, where as at Bonneville you have to hold the speed for the full mile? And are the 2 race types ( peak speed vs sustained AVG speed) running on the same record.
    Sounds like I should be running El mirage instead of the salt it's a lot easier on equipment to just hit the peak for a second or two then to hold the peak for a full mile.

    • @matthewf1979
      @matthewf1979 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      El Mirage isn’t big enough for average speeds and the timing association is very small. Look at it on the Google satellite map sometime.

    • @GregQuirin
      @GregQuirin  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      El mirage also only requires one pass to set a record. You don't have to back it up with a second run.
