It’s funny that the Japanese believed that stepping on an image or symbol of “Jesus Christ” would be the way to make priests renounce God when the Bible itself says “thou shall not make unto thee any heaven image or likeness of anything in Heaven.” So basically it’s wrong to make carved amulets of Jesus. That scripture/commandment renders the whole act null and void.

i would disagree with the argument offered in this video that the two priests retained their faith in any meaningful way. may i direct those of you who are interested, to this review by fr. robert barron who says it as well as it could be said:
    www.wordonfire.org/resources/video/bishop-barron-on-silence/5374/
fr. barron, though i don't love all his work, gives the best formulation against this film i've heard; if these men did retain their faith, it was in a way so hidden, so worthless and unredemptive to the culture in which they survived and sold their lord out, that i think any enemy of christ would rejoice at it. i believe this is probably a deeply personal statement by martin scorsesee, who washed out of a jesuit seminary for his glorious hollywood career, and i think this is a depiction of the catholic faith that he retains today. what is the fruit of a film like this? look no further than the comment by one of the contributors below, who says the film is 'deeply rooted in the false teaching of catholicism' and then highly recommends it. i think any enemy of the one true faith would recommend this film with delight.
i think martin's probable attempt at catharsis offered in this film would have better served god in the private confessional, rather than a world wide exposition of self justification that offers aid and comfort to all of us whose deepest creed is compromise and who daily sell out our lord for one worldly plate of lentils after another.

To be fair. That's how 20,000 Japanese Christians ended up Surviving until The Meiji restoration. Once Christianity was no longer illegal many ended up joining official churches while some continued to practice their version of the faith in the last 200 years.

Well for one it's not the face of God. It's the face of the Son of Man. ie Jesus Christ. As the the symbolize is. He is the Redeemer of Mankind. This is why the Japanese could not reconcile the Gospel of the Hebrew God. As they seen the Emperor. As the Divine one in the Meiji period. Any other god would undermine his authority.
This put Jesus Christ at the same level as God. As only God could raise the dead. Being he was the creator. He could take life or give it. The Emperor could not. This is why all other Religions can not compare to the God of the Hebrews. As the message has not changed in over 5000 years. All the others have changed over the life of the messages they created. It's what makes the message of Christ special. As he freed those past. Present and Future. Nothing else comes close....

Many ask: “Is Kijiro a Christian, or does he not understand the Christianity at all?” Well, I think Kinjiro is a Christian a week one, but still he finds every time the way back to God. Sin- in Greek “amartia” means to miss the aim. The Crestian’s aim is God and anything, which leads him astray from God, is a “amartia” i.e a sin. Kinjiro finds the way back through penance and confession. He feels sincerely pain and sorrow for his multiple acts of recanting God and the Christian faith. And he asks for forgiveness every single time. Every time, and increasingly disturbed, Rodrigues acts as his confessor. The last time, he now an apostate padre, refuses Kijiro the confession, but God does not abandon Kijiro, because his servant Rodirigues had abandoned Him and crowns him with the crown of
    immortality.

I think they got it right as according to what the vision of the movie was supposed to be, but if you have any type of real Christian background and/or biblical knowledge you’ll probably see things differently or try to draw a different conclusion as to what really happened and what some things really meant. With that being said, it’s a movie. In my opinion the best thing a movie can possibly do is stick with you and provoke thought or discussion after the credits role. This film does that almost flawlessly.

Unfinished Sentenc the book actually implies to the reader that either is possible. Did he imagine it to absolve himself of such a terrible choice? Or did God finally break into his shattered psyche in order to let him know it was going to be okay? the point is that it's impossible to know.

    • @ravissary79
      @ravissary79 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

keiichimorisato98 well figurative and literal. I can say that from my own experience I've felt God talk to me, and it's usually only when i've hit the point where my mind sort of runs out of gas and I'm truly quiet and receptive that I sense real divine inspiration, but it's incredibly rare and it's not the sort of thing that's really for anyone else (by and large).
ut to know for sure, yeah... there's this sort of self doubt that sometimes makes it tempting to accept certain generous thoughts as from God when they aren't really. because Rodrigo never really had a real spiritual breakthrough before his breakdown it's never made clear which one it is.

He did denounce his faith publicly. What if the three Hebrew boys had done that? What if Job had done that? You don't deny Christ when persecuted, especially if heaven is in your sight. I wouldn't want Christ to deny me on the last day. Obedient 'til death. The persecution lasts but a moment, but hell is eternal. And He will give you the strength to bear whatever it is you're facing. Yea, though I walk through the valley of death, I will fear no evil for thou art with me. That's easy for you to say when you're in the comfort of the modern society with religious freedom. But when you have a handful of poor souls hanging down in front you, and they are going to die if you don't apostatize, that's hard.

    • @tara3870
      @tara3870 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@enixbluerain7213 never said it wasn’t hard, but if you love Christ and are in relationship with him, you’re willing to suffer those devastating blows rather than denying him. The question is would you die for Christ? As a Christian, which I am, the answer is Yes. Those souls ‘hanging down’ were fellow Christians who were being persecuted and they knew through this persecution how their story could end. Their reward would far surpass their present suffering. The guilt I would feel to deny Christ is not something I or many others could live with anyway. And he did feel immense guilt. Can’t say for certain if he really lost his faith, but we do know he denied him publicly. I pray I have the same strength of character as those in the early church who lost their lives to proclaim the gospel and practice their faith. After all, it was the blood of the martyrs that spread Christianity far and wide.

    • @tara3870

@@samhowe4956 Sure did, but when He was resurrected, who did he call on first? Peter. He had a heavy heart for what he did and thought Jesus had no more use of him. He was forgiven by Christ and b/c of that he was able to do great things for the Lord. He eventually did end up dying for him. He stumbled many times and always stayed with God. So, he didn’t deny Him in the end, now did he?

There are few good points shared on the video but there were parts of what happened that still left me with questions and though the explanation of the ending was based on a majority question it still left me spaces inside which has not been covered. Yes, Ferera may have not denounced God in his heart but i just hoped all areas of what he did was mentioned and discussed like the part where he got married and also, the idea of what he have surrendered in the eyes of those who made him do so. He might in his heart not denied our Lord but in the eyes of the Japanese council he did and in their hearts evil still won and Faith has still been kept which disabled the purpose of God over death.
That in such manner those who were before him have made sacrifices worth greater gift in the after life with Christ eternal.
I myself am a looser a coward like kenichiro but humbly i would like to raise with unbiased guilt having also my faith in Christ our Lord,
I believe rev. Ferero and Kenichiro had the most advantage of standing with their intent to the Japanese because aside from having nothing else to loose such as a family or loved ones,, in death for faith they had Christ to gain.
If the thought was to save the lives of those whom will die alongside of him have he not stepped on the image then what worth was the promise of salvation then if they have bargained its price for a few more earthly years? that even so continuing life can still end up in vain.
Aside from loosing in the eyes of the Japanese council, his decision made him act in lesser Faith towards the disciples that was before him.
A priest must remember that in a Mass they perform in churches with specific homily, they highlight a part of a scripture written in the holy TESTAMENT.. and there are members of those who wrote it that died in the same or worst persecutions.
Now if we share what they say in faith but have not followed what they have accomplished in total surrender only to God and not to anyone else, have we not in a sense have something guilty to God the most than the choices of life over the eyes of an earthly council?
I watched once a few years back a debate of a dedicated pastor and a our brothers from Islamic faith and one muslim from the crowd stood up on his time to question and he told the pastor which i may have forgotten if he also mentioned a verse but he had poison in his hand and raising it he said if it was written that your Faith can save you then drink this poison that we may believe your Faith is better than ours (As if they are from different planets not having Christ in both respective books)
Then the pastor said,.No i won't drink that poison because it is also written that thou shall not test the Lord your God.
Its not related to the movie but i just wanted to share how Faith is being discussed nowadays.
The idea of men who thinks and fight in faith is based on logic.
It makes sense, it matters yes and i know rev. Ferera might have done the same thing..
I guess that's why the explaination of the movie on this video still left me holes and i believe I'll answer what i was seeking to understand by my own for now. (still.. God is over and way beyond logic)
    Please pray for my family.
That in time without me God will be with them always. Your generous and kind sincere prayers for my family I will always be grateful in death or below after.
Btw, thank you for sharing your explaination of the video. I didn't expect the movie to be known that much to many audiences but i hope those who seek can see the movie ( A very great movie )
Watching it is like being a soul in a classroom with Faith as the subject and after the discussion is an interesting, faith proving test.
    PBWY! iFSH!

Seeking and finding "God" is a practice of several major religions throughout this world. Faithful practice in "God" seeking may lead to peace and contentment in this life, regardless of the pitfalls in the human condition. The practice of Buddhism offers a method to achieving contentment by understanding the nature of Mind. Christianity and Buddhism rely upon the individual finding peace in understanding by examining interpersonal relationships with other beings, juxtaposed with a personal awakening by understanding the nature of reality.

Cuz doing science was considered witchcraft (from stupid Christian bible humpers) And let's not forget how you started wars, with other countries cuz they did not share your same religious views. Sending people to random places in the world, to try to convert them to your religion. Even if the place they come from has a religion. And then you'll go tell them that their God is fake but your God real. And this is why the Christian/Catholic religion is the biggest joke out there!! 👍

I thought this film had excellent actors, cinematic, but sadly the story is about how two men who renounced their faith publicly. As a result Christianity failed to take hold in Japan. In a country of honor, loyalty, and an honorable death these men failed. It is heavily rooted in some of the false teaching of Catholicism. For those that are mature in the faith and know the Bible I recommend it. It really begs the question of real persecution and how little many of us have experienced it here in America. It is though provoking and raises inter personal questions. However, I think this film is subtly mocking the church.

      I completely agree.
It is an emotionally powerful story to say the least, but when an author uses a fictional story in order to speak of a truth, analogies tend to break down, especially when the fictional story is based upon heretical misunderstandings of the text of the Bible. Catholicism had gone far astray from the teachings of scripture when it began to believe that justification follows sanctification.
If an author wishes to tell a story about Christian persecution, then I wish that someone would tell a story from Fox's Book of Martyrs. I can hardly make it through 3 pages of that book without weeping.

aHigher Power I don't think this movie mocks Christianity. I believe it puts into light the sufferings of the martyrs and places then as the heroes of the story, especially Garrupe and the seaside Martyrs who died with great faith. This movie basically says "You either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain." Those martyrs gave up their lives so that those priest can preach the gospel. However Rodrigues did not see it that way. He did not see that these martyrs suffering had meaning and therefore questions God. It is a movie that challenges us to look deeper in our faith and ask us would you endure suffering for Christ?

    • @aHigherPower
      @aHigherPower 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I agree to some point, but I do think the film subtle mocks Christianity. I agree, the film does beg questions to challenge our own personal faith as I mentioned. However, the men failed in their faith and Christianity failed to take in Japan. Does God give us more than we can handle? 1 Corinthians 10:13 "There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it." Death for ones faith is far greater than anything else. In the case of these men it would have been far better for them to die as martyrs themselves. It no doubt would have been a difficult thing to undertake such pain and suffering. It would take God's strength to overcome such things no doubt. First century Christians died by the thousands seeing their children being burnt at the stake and being tortured, yet many did not recant. In the case of persecution in Jesus Christ's name we are to offer the other cheek. I can't even imagine such suffering, but if my time comes I pray I can endure through his strength. Oh do I pray I can finish the race. Thanks for your perspective.

If one thinks that modern entertaining film industry is able to add a dot or a morsel (even if they would want it -- which is more than doubtful) to the knowledge of history or to any kind of spirituality -- must have serious problem both with his learning and his spiritual capabilities.

The Compassion of Amida Buddha (the inconceivable dynamic working of reality) extends to all sentient beings, everywhere, without limit. The prime target of Amida's compassion is the most down trodden, suffering being. The padre was such a being. Also, the traitor/spy was such a being. Both of these characters received the Unlimited Compassion of Amida, despite their dwelling in ignorance.
The mission of the padre was launched with the same arrogance that was used in conquest of many ancient societies around the globe. Through the Universal Compassion of the Buddha, the padre is educated with great cost to the teachers, about his own ignorance of the meaning of Self.
The missionaries were full of ego and zeal to think that they were bringing salvation to a society that already holds ancient advanced spiritual. The Jesuits were taught that human beings do not control their own lives, much less force beliefs onto others. However, human beings may remain hopeful that salvation comes to the faithful.
Despite the turmoil caused by the padre and his associates, he was given a peaceful, rewarding life as long as he did not force his views upon the society at large. If he kept his practice personal, and hidden, he could maintain his existence in the society that did not welcome him in the first place.
Without invitation or welcome, Europeans forced trade goods, weapons, and religious practice upon an ancient society . The egocentric motivations of the Western Empires caused rebellion, war, and death to many innocents throughout the entire world. At the same time, Roman Catholic Christians were persecuting fellow Protestant Christians and Jews in Europe with extreme torture and death.
Initially, the Japanese met hostile force with defense. The Japanese learned that the European assault upon their homeland could not be stopped with force alone. Therefore, they compassionately guided these interlopers to personal awakening.

Ahhh yes the universal compassion of torturing and executing people until they give up their faith or say your god is better. I feel that love

This film was a propaganda. He rejected the faith, but his hands was clean, it was not his resposability the torture. And he accepted to live like a japanese robot, he was a "saint" and the kijichiriro was his devotee

Anyone who believes that there's a imaginary person in the sky, that can talk to you, should be checked into a mental house.
