I also have the 75 long size pack I am 6’4 250 pounds. Love this pack it is the most comfortable pack I own and well worth the money. I am rough on my gear and have to say this is still standing very strong. The rain pouch is included and it has worked fine in heavy down pours which would ad more weight to the pack if it was to get soaked. Thanks Luke for another fantastic review keep up the great work.
I've got a 75L version of this pack in Blue and after testing and trying many packs including Osprey Atmos AG, I've come to conclusion that Baltoro is the most comfortable pack when loaded with weight. It sticks to your back and doesn't slide down, you don't even have to tighten the hip belt that much. Highly recommend it. Yes it's heavier than some other packs, but due to comfort it carries its weight better! I also got Arc'teryx Bora AR63 and that pack has amazing suspension but it's twice the price. These two packs are my top picks!
Should I consider of changing my Tatonka Bison 90? Everyone says that Baltoro is super comfortable. Personally I don't feel any lack of comfort wearing my 3+kg Bison and 15 kg of stuff in it. Some extra free space is also doesn't bring any disturbance (I can always pull the straps). Will Baloro bring me into the whole new level of comfort? Because this can be the only reason for me to by this pack and I'm struggling to do it.
Vlas Bakhar I haven’t tried or seen the pack you are talking about so I can’t compare it. My recommendation is to take your camping gear to a store where you can try Baltoro and load it up. You should be able to feel right away if it’s right for you, just make sure you get the right size and adjust it properly. Picking a pack is tricky but on average a lot of people agree that Baltoro is very comfortable. If you can’t try it before you buy and you are happy with your current pack then I wouldn’t buy it. The only reason I bought it is because I was experiencing discomfort with other packs.
Hey Luke, I loved the review and I did end up buying one of these packs used and I love it. I wanted to say that I discovered for that side mesh hydration pocket you can route the compression strap through the pocket instead of over it and it definitely helps.
This review also sealed the deal for me too. Mine just arrived as well. I am so stoked to take this beast into the wilderness. More than enough room to carry some luxuries. My only gripe is that those hip pockets are indeed pretty small, certainly too small for my phone, but I dont expect to need my phone at the ready like that anyway.
I have this Backpack the 75, It is the best one I have ever owned. This is the back support is epic. I agree with the bottle, you have to use a slim one.
Got his pack, went with the grey blue color, I am very please with this pack. Long hike hauler for sure 5 days or more. This is the most comfortable I have used.
Osprey does include the rain cover for their packs here in Sweden. It's weird that they don't overseas. Even on their 26l "Hikelite" which I bought this summer, it was included. (Great, GREAT pack by the way)
On the other hand some Osprey non-US models instead don't feature the removable daypack topcover. Apparently Osprey thinks Europeans need raincovers and Americans daypacks... instead of giving all of us both :p
I had one and when I bought my ultralight sleeping bag I decided to shoo for a pack with the right weight and volume to reduce my load and bought a 50 L O$p which reduced about 8lbs from what I did carry. But yes I do miss that pack in the winter for the size and volume not so much the weight it can carry. So I'm shopping now for a descent 70L pack and to be honest for the money difference I just may try to order a fjallraven tech pack. They have the color and style I'm looking for an yes it may cost $150 more by time shkooing and ha dling but I believe they may just be bomb proof.
Luke, I think that you said it all, and you did focus on the heavy weight of the pack. Bottom LIne, good pack, for heavy loads, durable, lots of storage, but heavy! Not really needed unless you are a miner, maybe a forest fire fighter, or if you are someone who has some need to carry lots of heavy gear. However, I would love to see you focus on packs with similar capacity, and durability, but at least half the weight of the Gregory Baltoro. Some companies to look at include the following: ZPacks, ULA, Mountain Laurel Designs, Gossamer Gear, Hyperlite Mountain Gear, Granite Gear, Osprey, Katabatic Gear, Superior Wilderness Designs, Mountainsmith, and Sierra Designs. Finally, I hesitate a little to mention this company because they went bankrupt under another company name, but My Trail Co was launched in 2015 by the same founders of GoLite, an ultralight backpacking company that closed its doors in 2014. The founders utilized the best designs from the most popular GoLite products and rebranded them under My Trail Co. My Trail Co manufactures the UL 50 backpack which is seemingly a good deal. Weight: 1 lb 6 oz Capacity: 50 L Price: $119 It's kind of a plain Jane pack but seemingly durable, light, and inexpensive.
I have a serious question about bags in your opinion. For hunting, camping and hiking, which bag would you recommend between the Gregory Baltoro 65L vs Osprey Atmos AG 65L? Keep in mind i live in Ontario so dealing with all types of weather and cold. I am open to hearing what other bag you may recommend as well for these conditions. I plan on loading it out, so looking for something rigged, comfy and something with a good warranty. Thank you in advance for your time
Have the Gregory baltoro 65 got it new in 2011 use it atleast 10times a year and still not one issue with its performance it truely is a hauler and will last for many years great purchase ive abused it in so many ways and like i said its built to last but this pack is not a thru hiking pack in any way what so ever
Same pack I was checking out at my local REI, how was the hip belt? Felt stiff when I first put the pack on till they added 30lbs then it felt better. Great review Luke.
If I wanted to climb Elbrus should I get the Baltoro 65/75 or Denail 75 or is there something even more appropriate out there? Your advice will be so useful for me thank you. Also where would I be able to put my crampons on either pack? Thank you!
I have found from different manufactures that if the pack is full the outer mesh pockets can be tight which can be problematic if you like to use hydration bottles.
Will you do a review of the redesigned 2022 Baltoro pack? It no longer comes with a raincover (sold separately for $39.95) and also no longer comes with the removable summit pack/hydration sleeve (also sold separately at $39.95). Few other changes that seem like the might be good, or no big deal.
I had an REI Trail 70, but it was too big, not as adjustable as I wanted, and weighed over 5lbs. I returned it and got the Gregory Paragon 58 instead. So far, after several mountain hikes, I'm loving it. It doesn't have all the bells and whistles of the one reviewed here, but it has the same quality. Especially love the Velcro belt and torso adjustments- you can fit them to any size torso or waist. Retails at REI for $229, so it's a great pack for much less than the real high-end packs, and just as good quality.
Thanks for the review. As you mentioned the back still gets wet no matter what, I'm wondering does Osprey Atmos AG will be the same or perform better than Baltoro in terms of ventilation?
Hey Luke, thanks for your great backpack reviews! You've also tested the Osprey Atmos 50 - whats your personal compare between the Osprey Atmos AG 50 and the Gregory Baltoro 75? Because i'm not sure wich one i should grab - the Osprey Atmos AG 50 or the Gregory Baltoro 65 (both 2018 versions)...
I'm so disappointed my backpacking trip had to be cancelled. My hiking partner had some health issues at the time and made a few trips to the ER. It was Better to be safe and near medical help. I'll get to test my Deva out in few weeks though at Rock Island state park. We have a remote site on a bluff overlooking lake Michigan.
I had the atmos 65 ag size large, I didnt size properly ... I learned that I'm a size medium so the larger pack kept sliding down pulling my drawers down with it. The hip belt pockets were too small and the hip straps too long. Access to the side water pockets is nearly impossible for the less flexible folks. The front access to the main compartment of the baltoro is enticing, but I wouldn't be able to use an inside pack liner and forced to compartmentalize all my gear into waterproof sacks adding additional weight. I like the day pack and could see myself using it in town on a zero. In the end, I returned my atmos 65 ag to save precious lbs, but at a heavy cost as ultralight gear gets expensive.
Large ALICE pack seemed just fine, and since there was nobody that was going to listen to any gripes it just fit great. Carried 90 pounds with the same discomfort as 60. The new packs are a luxury that I find it hard to believe people complain about. The worst pack made today is a very good pack.
How do you feel about this pack over your Arcteryx Echo pack? I have the Echo and it is heavy but indestructible. I do much prefer the newer style of front loader packs like this and I'm sure I'd enjoy the 3 or so lb difference. I know the Echo was one of your favorites. Thoughts?
Should I consider of changing my Tatonka Bison 90? Everyone says that Baltoro is super comfortable. Personally I don't feel any lack of comfort wearing my 3+kg Bison and 15 kg of stuff in it. Some extra free space is also doesn't bring any disturbance (I can always pull the straps). Will Baloro bring me into the whole new level of comfort? Because this can be the only reason for me to by this pack and I'm struggling to do it.
Hello Outdoorgear ive wach a lot of your review but wich is the best backpack would you recommend to those new for this sports? Thank you i injoy your videos...
As always Luke, great review and video. I have a gen 1 65 liter Baltoro. It is a nice pack with a lot of adjustments. It is a little on the heavy side, especially when wet. What was your total loaded weight? Never mind - you said 45 lbs. My weight was 40 lbs, and want to get to 30 -35 lbs tops. Less weight = more joy.
Starting to plam an AT thru hike do you have option on whether axe saw knives are needed or other specific to the AT hiking trails? I know yiu are akwats on or near it. Like the features of this pack and 5 lbs less than my molle II pack
Hello, I would like to know if in the external compartment, which is attached to the mesh pocket, would enter a lens like the Tamron 150-600 mm, which measures 25.78 cm long by 10.56 cm in diameter. I am interested in having it in an accessible place in case I need to photograph animals. Thanks for answering.
Awesome review. I wonder if Gregory company are going to now 'borrow' (repost) your review without permission. I hope they at least contact you first! I had my music played on national Australian TV without my permission and it was a six month battle to reclaim it. I wish I'd known about Lawyers and Cease and Desist letters back then 😁. At least the thief in my case got fired and I got a foot in the door by default and now have 89 songs being played all round the world on a daily basis 😂
The Atmos is in a different class, so not a good alternative to the Baltoro unless you need a lighter duty pack in the first place. When it comes to big heavy haulers the Osprey Aether is what you'd want to look at as an alternative.
You do Awesome Reviews on Hiking Gear! Warranty for Gregory we will notify you of status and any applicable repair charges upon evaluation. Osprey will Fix Free of charge and they will replace your pack if they can't fix it. My old 2015 Osprey Aether 70 can't be fixed so they have sent me a New Pack. Wednesday 9/23/19 Gregory may be the better pack? I don't have one.
So far it hasn't faded any but here in the mountains I'm just about always in the shade of the forest. Sunlight is going to play a big role in fading. - Luke
There are some capacity difference between the sizes, but they refer to your torso length. You'll want the size that fits you, and your capacity will be +/- a few liters.
There's always trade-offs in backpacks for sure. But it is one of the top of the line companies that's for sure to. And you got to love Orange. I love these companies that make packs different colors. Easier to be found if you're in trouble. Great review young man
I bought a Baltoro 65 (in size large which is advertised as 68 liters) for my very first pack. With REI's GEARUP2020 coupon code this pack was only $180. I'm really looking forward to my first Backpacking trip with it.
I'm an attorney. In complex legal terms what Luke said was -- "This is a well built pack that for a multi-day trip is well worth the price. It's not light, but for hauling gear, durability and comfort with heavier loads I recommend this". While not said, I did see the confidence in his posture and eyes which translates to --- "I went toe to toe with a deadly snake guys and here I am .... bring it". Any further questions please let me know. 😎
If you are interested in an excellent military pack, the review for the Savotta Jääkäri L Rucksack is coming up soon!

i wasnt able to add a pack to the cart but i did however found it on amazon
Cool. Looking forward to it.
Sounds great. I was looking at that and helikon tex matlida packs yesterdays
I haven't heard of helikon tex matlida packs before but I will look into them.

Thank you Luke! You're one of the best reviewers of camping equipment on here. Appreciate it :)
This has to be the best backpacking bag ever!!! A genius designed this thing. Perfect every way
“Buy once, cry once” I love it! 😂
Hey Luke, I loved the review and I did end up buying one of these packs used and I love it. I wanted to say that I discovered for that side mesh hydration pocket you can route the compression strap through the pocket instead of over it and it definitely helps.
You forgot that you can use the sleeping pad straps as a hip belt on the smaller day bag.
Just got mine delivered. You are the best reviewer my friend. Very honest, appreciated

Great review, I love the way you covered all the facts (unlike some channels) in a fast moving manner.
Any chance on a Gregory Baltoro 75 vs Osprey Aether 70 review? Thanks for the video
Guess not 😄
Love that back access! I have the z65 model, for about 6 years now, durability is awesome!
Don't forget the customer service! Excellent!
Just got one of these, used, at REI for $130. love it so far, thanks for the review. Are these clips from Acadia? Cheers!
Got the Baltoro 85 and thw Sierra Designs Flex Capacitor 60-75 from watching your videos. Both amazing bags.
Gonna use this bag for a trail construction crew service year term in idaho! Super excited
thanks for the infos..i was wondering between osprey atmos and the gregory baltoro and this one looks like the winner
i bought this backpack this summer, dusk blue, large. its great, i use it often. no complaints.

Love the attitude
I have this pack it is very nice and comfortable. You did a very good jobs describing it in your videos.
great review! Would a nalgene bottle fit in the bottle holder?
I finally bought it, and it does fit

She is doing well now. The doctor finally figured out what was going on after 2 months. We have a camping trip coming up for the weekend.
What do you preffer, low alpine cerro torres 65:85 or gregory baltoro 75?
I am at the same comparison and i can't decide which one to buy.
Nice review. Can’t wait for you to review Amazon’s backpacks.

Hill People gear makes a chest pack that allows you to carry extra gear that you may need access to in a hurry. Might want to check that out.
Yep, DB is right, I have reviews on it already.

For a thruhike you will want to carry as little as possible; a very lightweight knife will be perfect. You won't need a saw.

Great review!
Hi Luke what would you recommend for a 75 to 80 liter bug out bag.
Is that bag waterproof for a water bag
So would you reccomend Atmos over Baltoro?
The Atmos is in a different class, so not a good alternative to the Baltoro unless you need a lighter duty pack in the first place. When it comes to big heavy haulers the Osprey Aether is what you'd want to look at as an alternative.
Cool pack... i would really like to see a review of the hill people gear Qui-ya pack!
I've been eyeballing that pack for a while; I will see what I can do!
- Luke
TheOutdoorGearReview go ahead and send it my way when your done 😉
Nice back pack!!
Which is better Vaquest or this???
Thats an excellent price point for that pack, compare to a Mystery Ranch of similar size (of which I own) or the Sabra Gear (own one also).
Can you review the kifaru nomad 2?
I can try to get one in.
Thanks Michael.
- Luke
How does it compare to the ilbe
Comfort-wise, the Gregory is ten times better. As far as space and load hauling ability, you won't beat the ILBE.
- Luke
Wow, looks a lot like my Osprey. Thanks.
How is the color retention of this pack? DOes it fade overtime?
So far it hasn't faded any but here in the mountains I'm just about always in the shade of the forest.
Sunlight is going to play a big role in fading.
- Luke
What exactly do the S,M,L sizes refer to?
There are some capacity difference between the sizes, but they refer to your torso length. You'll want the size that fits you, and your capacity will be +/- a few liters.
the weight of the pack doesnt bother me.
Mystery Ranch DINGS YOU for rain cover and hipbelt pockets adding about $150 to the cost of a $400 pack. Great review.
